INFO:
Odin is the ROM Flashing Tool for SAMSUNG smartphones. ROM files flashable with Odin come with .tar extension.
Most of the ROMs you are going to flash with Odin are the official stock Samsung ROMs (or leaked stock ROMs). Custom ROMs are rerely flashable by Odin because they come with .zip extension that Odin does not recognize (it recognizes .tar files).
Custom kernels, however, are sometimes provided in .tar format by their developers (e.g. CF-Root kernels), so that they can be flashed by Odin. When your phone is new and running official firmware you most often cannot flash a custom ROM to it because a Samsung phone often requires a custom recovery and root rights that are included in a custom kernel to be able to flash custom ROMs. That's why Odin often comes in handy in rooting and flashing a custom firmware to your phone because you (often) can flash a custom kernel with it that already includes root and custom recovery and enables you to flash custom firmware (custom ROMs). I use the word "often" very frequently in the previous sentence because every Samsung smartphone is different and requires various procedures for rooting it and flashing custom ROMs (see the section about using Odin below).
If it comes to stock ROMs, the best source of stock (official) Samsung ROM files is located at this excellent website: SamMobile.com/firmwares (link). It requires registration (it's free) and I encourage you to set up an account there because you will most likely use this site several times during your stay at XDA. You will most likely come across 1 .tar or 3 .tar file ROMs there, flashable by Odin. Refer to the Odin flashing guide below for more info.
Below in this thread you can download Odin v3.09, v3.07, v3.06, v3.04, v1.85, v1.83 and all important versions of Odin Multi Downloader.
However, bear in mind that not every Samsung smartphone can be flashed using any Odin version. In fact, for every Samsung smartphone there's a specific Odin version compatible with it. Please refer to the tables below to learn which Odin version is compatible with your phone!
To use Odin with ANY Samsung phone you first need to properly install latest Samsung USB Drivers for Mobile Phones. You can download the drivers in this thread (link). They work for all Samsung smartphones. In that thread there is a full guide on installing the drivers on Win 8/7/Vista/XP x86 & x64.

My friend tried to install something on his own and it went really ugly. His phone is stuck on Samsung screen and it's not doing anything. I'm trying to help him recover his phone using odin. His phone already has CWM recovery flashed but no nandroid(<~what an idiot!). I made sure all files on the picture are odin flashable.

1. Download mode to odin flash these files
PDA_JI6modem<~no pit file required, (stock kernel, T959UVJI6)<~ with pit file.
2. Manually open recovery, and I'm assuming it's going to be purple for factory recovery
-> push wipe data / factory reset.
Am I doing this correctly?
For fascinate, there was a odin flashable stock recovery tar file. Where is one for vibrant? Does vibrant require this?
Well......anyone?
There is a thread in the android development section that had the original JFD PDA file and pit file that will restore the phone back to stock. I had the same exact problem and using those files and following the directions I was back in working order in 10-15 minutes. Look in the Vibrant reference bible thread and if I remember correctly the thread was started by justanothercrowd. I hope that helps, good luck!

Phone had stock ED05 from an OTA update.
Here's what happened:
I wanted to root the phone so I Heimdalled CWM recovery. Forgot to load su, and new kernel to SD card so I lost CWM on reboot.
Copied su to SD card and re-Heimdalled CWM recovery and successfully flashed su. Realized that I did not have a new kernel and ROM that I wanted to flash on SD card. Lost CWM on re-boot.
Copied all the files that I wanted to flas to the SD card and this is where the problems begin. Flashing recovery failed in both Heimdall and Odin. Tried Odin and Heimdall to load full DL09 and ED05, but both failed. Tried Heimdall in both Linux and WinXP too.
When power is applied to the phone all I get is the screen in the attached photo.
Anyone know how I can fix this phone?
Many thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

I don't know what version of odin you're using but I use 1.7..anyways, pull your battery...hold the down volume button and plug your stock samsung cable into your pc...you should enter download mode (a little construction android with a big yellow triangle) flash in the
PDA only section
Heres a link with better detailed instructions

Not sure why this worked, but this is how I fixed the phone.
From a Windows 7 machine I Odined (V.1.83) the ED05 package that pentafive posted in this thread: [ROM][ODIN][FACTORY][ED05] VzW full factory froyo restore with radio and kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178544)
The trick was using a Windows 7 machine. Heimdall of the same package from Linux (Fedora 14) failed. Odin and Heimdall of the same package from an XP machine also failed.
After I Odined the stock system and CWM, I flashed the Powerwashed ROM. Phone and owner (my mom) are now happy.
The strange thing is that I have successfully rooted, CWM, and ROMed, 4 or 5 other phones from my Fedora box with no problems. Actually, I have Heimdalled packages to my phone at least a dozen times with no problem. My mom's phone is the only one to give me this much trouble.
Just realized that on my Linux/XP machine I used a USB extension cable while on the Windows 7 machine I plugged the stock cable directly I into the computers USB port. That may have been part of the problem, but it is curious that only 1 of about 5 phones was failed to work properly.
Since the problem phone is a 2.5 hour drive away I won't get a chance to test this theory out any time in the near future.
Has anyone ever actually seen a completely bricked Fascinate?

what I need is to make a root + CF root + also I need zImage to remove the yellow triangle.
any help would be appreciated.
thanks a lot.
Flash CF-Root of choice (from your firmware info) > flash stock kernel (to get rid of the yellow triangle) > then extract the CF-Root you flashed earlier (it should be extracted to a zImage) and open the cwm manager and select flash kernel then choose the zImage file..
Edit: dial *#1234# to know your phone info..

You need to flash KH1.zip to root. If you extract the .zip then you will get .tar file, which you should flash in Odin under PDA option. If you extract that .tar further then you will get the a zImage, which you need to flash via CWM which is already installed on your device with the option Flash Kernel.

PS- Sorry, it has already been answered above.

Don't forget to Flash the Stock kernel before flashing the zImage. You will get it from Intratech's thread in Dev section.
Also read the steps carefully before starting the process, in that thread I've posted above.
thanks
it works like a charm...
you are sooo great.
When I got my i9100, I didn't have any guides or tutorials to learn about root access. It was a trial and error process that I went through to further understand the process of flashing ROM's and gaining root. I have a little Linux experience so the term root wasn't new to me, but it is to the many users that flock here. In this guide I'll show you how to root Gingerbread using CF-Root.
Before I decided to write this guide, I was using CyanogenMod 9 but wanted to help the users of XDA, with the amount of threads I've seen asking for help rooting.
GINGERBREAD ROOT:
I'm using the stock ROM's for my country, Trinidad, rooting with CF-Root. That's to show people having all sorts of trouble finding a CF-Root kernel that even though where I live there's a kernel to use. It's not difficult.
Files used:
GT-I9100_TTT_I9100UHKI2_I9100UHKI1_I9100UUBKI2.tar
CF-Root-SGS2_XW_INU_KL1-v5.0-CWM5.tar
Odin3 v1.85.exe
Go to: CF-Root 5.5
- On your phone, dial *#1234#
- You'll see PDA, PHONE, CSC, pay attention to PDA and the last characters. In my case it's KL1.
- Using CF-Root's thread, look for a kernel matching those three digits (CTRL+F the search function).
- Download the matching kernel, flash using Odin.
HOW TO FLASH KERNEL USING ODIN:
1. Put the device into Download Mode, the device will accept anything that can be flashed using Odin.
To do this, hold down the following key combination:
Volume Down + Home + Power
Samsung KIES, does not need to be installed for Odin to recognise your device. However, the Samsung USB Drivers needs to be installed.
Once you've put the device into Download Mode, where it's ready to accept whatever you can throw at it, Odin needs to see it. When you plug the device into the computer, it will show up in the Message box saying 'Added!'.
For example:

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Click PDA, select the CF-Root kernel you've deemed appropriate. Make sure to unzip the file or else Odin wouldn't be able to see it. It'll see the tar file though. It will not see the zImage inside the tar file.
This image is showing you where to put the CF-Root kernel to be flashed.
Start the process, it'll take less than ten seconds.
You've successfully rooted your device and replaced the stock recovery with ClockworkMod Recovery.
thanks for the info but i think you should move it to the general forum

well it was a quick shot from my note 4 but still explains the problem. phone stays like this with blue led flashing after i heard samsung boot sound. i tryed to flash old recovert first i used but it also didnt worked.
update: i cant reach recovery...
First try to take out battery for some time and try to boot again. If not successfully what about download mode? If you can't boot and can't go to recovery your only option is to flash stock ROM by Odin using download mode. Then you can flash recovery and restore your backup (if you have one).

well i already tryed battery trick. i found stock rom (1.3gb from internet) downloading now. if i flash that will it fix it?

Be absolutly sure so downloaded ROM is suitable for your model - one of trusted sources of stock ROMs for Samsung phones is there: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
If you choose proper ROM, after flashing it you will get brand new system on your Mega - flashing ROM by Odin superseed all what you have now in your unit. Of course all your data will be lost.
