Sometime in 2013, I unlocked my bootloader, messed around with some roms, and eventually settled on CyanogenMod.
I though I was going to sell my phone, so I went back to the stock version, and took the OTA update. But, I decided to hold on to the phone, and not being able to load up a custom ROM, i just rooted it, and carried on my way.
Lately, I started having very weird issues, so I decided to just do a factory reset from the settings menu, hoping it would get my phone back to normal.
Well, it's not. When I booted, it was saying "unauthorized software".
So, I tried 3 different version of Odin to flash KIES_HOME_I605VRAMC3_I605VZWAMC3_1098177_REV04_user_low_ship.tar that I had sitting on my harddrive from the last time I rooted.
And now, when I boot, it says "Firmware update encountered an issue, please select recovery mode in Kies...". But, Kies just get stuck on the "Connecting" screen.
Here's what I have when I boot with Power + Home + Vol Down:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SCH-I605
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
AP SWREV: A3
And after the fail, I get "Invalid magic string"
Any help? I just want the phone to work for the next few months, and then I'll be upgrading.

I used Odin yesterday to Flash the new JI6 OTA update, after doing so it Odin said Pass but on my phone the error message read:
E:Cant mount/dev/block/stl10
I flashed stock ROM T959UJFD prior to flashing the new JI6 and went without cause. I pretty comfortable with Odin and have used it many times.
After the error the phone with boot up into the Vibrant Boot screen then go straight to Recovery. I tried rebooting and same result.
I tried Deleting all user data and same result.
I tried all the options available in recovery and still will only boot into recovery mode.
I tried plugging it into my pc and using adb to reboot into download mode but it will only reboot back to recovery.
When i have it Plugged into my pc and Odin open, Odin sees the device and opens up the COM line but won't do anything unless its in download mode.
Any help would be appreciated. "Crap now I'm one of those threads"
Ugh... I know this problem all too well. Did you click on the partition option in Odin when flashing to JI6??? If so, I hope you don't have a hardware locked phone!
Edit: Should probably elaborate a bit more.
To fix this simply get yourself into download mode manually by powering off your phone/removing battery/etc, and then power it back up while holding vol up + vol down. There are numberous methods to get into this mode unless you're hardware locked like me. Hopefull this will throw you into download mode and allow you to flash back to stock rom. If you're able to get this far simply try flashing the update again.
If you're hardware locked the only way I know of to fix the phone is either have TMO replace it with a phone that's not HW locked, or get Samsung's customer service center to give you an RMA for replacement. Either should work since what is now an official update borked your phone. I'm still waiting for my wife's phone to be returned in a hopefully non-Hw locked state. We'll see!
Good luck!
Mod close thread please, phone being replaced.
A few months ago, I tried rooting my phone and posted about it:
"I am completely new to rooting and I followed Wolfdroid's tutorial to root my phone.
I got to the point where i had CWM, but when I was trying to install from my SD card there was no option.
I'm stuck with the Samsung "unlock" Custom load up screen and every time i try to go into recovery, it immediately goes to download odin mode, but it still says im not rooted. I know it's possible to boot normally by going to download and pressing Volume down, but if it's possible I would like to get my phone back to an completely unrooted state.
I've tried unrooting with SuperSU but that just ends up freezing.
Samsung Galaxy S4(Verizon) SCH-I545 NK1"
After a while I gave up on bringing my phone back to a completely unrooted state, but now my phone was stuck in a reboot loop, where i would be able to use it for a few seconds then it would reboot. I am completely unable to get into recovery mode, and when I do try, it goes into the downloading screen. So I tried flashing a stock rom onto my phone, but that failed, so now it can either go into downloading screen or go to a screen were it says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again." I have no clue what to do at this point.
have you tried surge's emegerncy stock? here. It's an NC5 stock rom, but since bootloader didnt get locked up for kitkat until OC1 it might work.
OK I screwed up. I would appreciate any help here. Rogers S6 Edge, G925W8. It was stock 5.0.2.
Wanted to try a ROM so flashed TWRP, then flashed Kingfisher ROM v1.1 (it seemed the safest / W8-friendly). ROM was fantastic (much better battery), but GPS would never lock.
Tried to start over by flashing stock Rogers 5.0.2 via Odin but it wouldn't flash. I read (a little too late) that downgrading isn't something Samsung enjoys. Argh!
Then out of desperation, I flashed the BL (BL_G925W8VLU2BOH8_5.1.1.tar) from http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6-edge/general/canadian-odin-5-1-1-bootloader-twrp-t3196595 , which was a very bad move, I assume because I wasn't on 5.1.1 to begin with. Crap!!
So now the phone gets to the Galaxy S6 edge splash screen, with "KERNEL IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING", and it stays there. The phone also gets very warm, and I can't shut it off. Using VolDown+Power+Home reboots it (showing the same message) but doesn't shut it off. Using VolUp+Power+Home reboots it but only says the same thing about Recovery.
Please tell me that I didn't just brick this phone!!
UPDATE:
Am able to get the phone into Download/Odin mode by holding the 3 buttons (voldown+power+home) while plugging the phone into USB. The stock Rogers image refuses to flash (Odin says fail immediately), but I am a step closer thanks to @brar.arsh's thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6-edge/general/canada-galaxy-s6-edge-canadian-users-t3069314 )
From there I grabbed the "S6 Edge Stock Firmware OG2" which comes in 4 parts (BL, AP, CP, and CSC). I added all 4 pieces to Odin and started flash. Boot.img and recovery flashed, but then during the system.img flash, it failed about half-way through. Right after that failure, something changed because the device now became "Unknown Device" to windows, and it complained that "a USB device has malfunctioned, and Windows no longer recognizes it".
This gave me hope that I could get into Recovery (since that flash was successful), but the phone likes to boot directly to the "The update failed so please launch Smart Switch" message - regardless of starting with VOLUP+PWR+HOME button combination. So no recovery access... but making progress.
I belive I initiated a flash that contained JUST the BL, CP, and CSC portions, and it passed quickly. This, of course, isn't enough to get the system going. I just wanted to see if it would fail in other areas.
Trying the emergency flash via Smart Switch: Smart Switch said it required the phone to be in Recovery mode, but it still attempted the fix even though I was in Odin/Download mode. Good news, but unfortunately it gave the same result - a failure at around 50% of the entire flash operation.
I have tried re-flashing the AP portion several times and it fails at different progressions (50%, 75%, 90%)... so close.
I was thinking that it was maybe a power issue (since the battery was completely dead during the "kernel is not seandroid enforcing" period, with no way to turn the phone off or pull battery), I wondered if the battery just needed a little juice before starting the operation. I let it stay plugged in for a few minutes after one of the many failed flash attempts (screen was illuminated with the progress bar frozen at the point of failure). I noticed that when I unplugged it, it didn't die immediately, so I plugged it back in (getting the "USB device has malfunctioned" message again), and forced it to restart by holding the VOLDOWN+PWR+HOME buttons). It got back into Odin mode and the PC recognized it again. Loaded up just the AP portion in Odin, hit Start, left the room, and when I came back it said PASS! I cannot prove that it had any battery power from this method... or if it even helped. This could have just been a fluke.
The phone automatically rebooted into Recovery mode (which scared me) so I hit Power Down.
Rebooted the phone - I hear the lame Samsung startup song, and it is booting. Hallelujah.
Okay, so i rooted my phone and something went wrong and to fix it i thought i would wipe my phone but instead wiped the os on twrp so now my phone is basically ruined. I tried to flash the s and it worked but the installing took too long so i unpligged and now it is so now it is stuck on a page saying an error occurred while updating the device software. plug into smart switch emergency etc... so i did but it wouldnt come up on the emergency thing so im screwed?

What model is it?
Never unplug something when it says not too. Thats how you corrupt and ruin stuff.
Your phone is not broke.
Hold vol down + home + power until you get into download mode.
Flash stock firmware for your model.
Phone will be back on. While its installing apps and software do not turn off.
It can freeze at samsung logo for a while but this is normal on first boot.
If you give me the model number and what version you was on i can find you the firmware.
i have a samsung sm-g960u, that is locked to Sprint. On attempt to network unlock it by flashing the CP, it decided to never boot into the OS again. To clarify, when it was done flashing (with latest Odin), it reset, and made it to the blue screen with the Android icon, and the spinning arrows that says "Updating system software" and it will stay that way until the battery runs out. Upon using the Volume down and Pwr button reset, instead of taking me to Maintenance Mode, it goes to the black Factory Reset screen. Rebooting, Shutting Down, and rebooting into Download mode, all result in the phone being locked at this screen. I still have Download mode if im quick enoough to hit it after i power cycle it, and ive flashed the stock software successfully ( Odin says anyway) multiple times, with this same result. My question is this: Is this fixable through using the Nand Erase option in Odin? Also in the logs, i noticed it had some lines about the kernal being experimental(?) and to not use it, so im wondering when i flashed that CP modem file, if it somehow re wrote this version kernel into the phone? Im completely at a standstill here and any help would be great, as the phone is completely unusable at this point.
