Worth keeping with non Sammy phone? - Samsung Gear S

Just looking for general opinions. I had a Galaxy S5 when originally getting the Gear S. At my last phone upgrade, I opted for the HTC One M9 which I am *loving* so far. I'd really like to use the 2 together, but my head goes absolutely spinning when trying to muddle thru the 50+ page thread with a couple of different instruction sets. Scared to death I'll brick the thing following something that ends up being wrong or outdated with newer FW revs.
Am I making it out to be worse than actual? Is there a set of simplified step by step to get it done? I have never owned an HTC before and had it successfully backed up and rooted day 1 with the kind folks here at XDA. Hoping for the same here. Thx in advance!

[Q] Question regarding rooting and roms

Hey guys, as you can see I am new to the whole wide world of android. I have had an iPhone since 2007 and recently dropped my iPhone 4 on the pavement which completely wrecked the screen. I seized the opportunity to buy an android. I got this s2 for 350 on eBay.
Anyway... I have absolutely no idea what I am getting into here. I have watched a ton of videos and still am really lost. (Sadly)
I have this s2 at 4.0.3 and am completely lost when it comes to how to flash a rom. I get we have to use ODIN, Kies and your rom. Am I missing anything else?
I want to use this. galaxys2root. com/att-galaxy-s2/aokp-ics-rom-for-att-galaxy-s2-sgh-i777-best-ics-rom/ << I cannot post links so its just a space in between the .com
I have seen videos where I have to root the thing first- or will this do it for me? I have also seen "roms" that are 400 MB in size but this one I like its 134... Am i missing any files or something? I have done searching but I end up more confused than I started. If someone could give me a push in the right direction that would be a great help!
This is the first phone I am actually confused with... I am sure it is easy, just not for a guy who has had an iPhone and developed for them since then... (I am co founder of whited00r )
Start with the links in the sticky. Be sure to read them all.
You said your phone is already on 4.0.3, which is Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). That means it's not stock (aka factory settings, out of the box, etc). I'd personally suggest after reading all the links, returning to stock and starting over from scratch as it's the best way to ensure you don't have any problems, especially since you don't really know what the previous owner did to your phone. The links for returning to stock and for flashing custom ROMs are also in the sticky. Please don't read just these links, read at least all of the other links posted there. That's just the starting point mind you, you should probably do more reading after that on stuff in the posts that you don't understand. I know this will take a lot of time, but it's for everyone's benefit that you fully understand everything you do to your phone before you do it.
I'll even help you out with a couple other links I think may be useful which aren't in the sticky.
ROM vs. Kernel
Odex vs. Deodex
Please hit my thanks button if I helped you. Good luck and welcome to the forums!

From now on, don't watch any videos. They tend to be incomplete and usually outdated. Also, don't use any files or methods you find anywhere else besides XDA.
Like karate104 said, read the stickies at the top of the forums; they will tell you everything you need to know in detail. Read this one in particular. It has links to a lot of useful guides.
you also need to be wary of what you read and watch on gs2root. com
when i first started i used the rooting technique with the kernel from there and ended up with no wifi and ended up having to flash entropy's daily driver to recover
as the guys above said, read the stickies here and go over it a million times until it makes sense
flashing can open up loads of features, but you can very easily make your phone unusable (easily fixable once not hard bricked) but better avoid the trouble than finding a fix
Another victim on galaxys2root!
Sigh!

Any up-to-date guides on rooting/romming Hero S?

I've spent the last few days trying to figure out how to root and rom my US Cellular Hero S and all I can find are hard to follow guides scattered around various non-xda forums. Since the phone never saw any 'official' support at XDA it was basically sent to the graveyard and never got the level of support that something like my captivate had. Because of this I'm having trouble figuring out what root method is best, a step-by-step guide to that method, and what roms are available for me to use.
Could anyone give me a hand with this? The only reason I am replacing my cappy with this hero s is because my cappy has an unfixable SoD issue and the hero s is a slightly better device.

Samsung Galaxy S 5 Active (AT&T) SM-G870A

Hello,
I believe there should be a section devoted to this phone just as there are to others. I know people, like my self would like to be able to root their device, and it would be much simpler to be able to go straight to it. I had done extensive research on this forum all day yesterday after "Soft-Bricking" my S 5 Active. To much of my surprise, I did not find a whole lot. One of the biggest issues I had was not being able to find the firmware for 5.0 for my phone to try to unbrick it. So, I would like to offer the Original firmware if someone can be able to give me instructions on how to create an image or whatever is needed. I still want to have my phone rooted but am very nervous to try again. I ended up having to drive 45 miles (1 hour) to the city to a warranty center to have it fixed. Thankfully they were able to and saw it as not my fault. However I want to help others while receiving some personal help from other members who have successfully rooted there Samsung Galaxy S 5 Active (AT&T) SM-G870A.
If their is a section already I apologize but I have not found it.
Thanks

Greetings and root questions?

Greetings people here, nice to meet you guys but aside that I could use some assistance. All knowledge/experience I have with rooting have come from here and it has helped me quite a bit in the past with my old phone (Samsung Galaxy Light). Rooting that thing was simple and I have recently made the jump to a Galaxy S5 (SM-G900T3) and being the idiot I am I upgraded to the newest version (G900T3UVS1FOL1). I have looked around and around the internet for info on this firmware as well as my model of phone but I have found few pieces of information that include both. Fear has been keeping me from doing too much as this is the most expensive phone I have ever gotten and having very little funds I want to be sure of everything. I understand risks come with rooting and such but covering all the bases can't bee too bad right?
From what I gather there is no way around using Odin to do something that will let me root this thing. While I haven't used the program before I trust there are enough tutorials online involving the program that I can figure my way around that thing. What troubles me is that I see many files/tutorials for different versions (FOG, FOF, FOJ, ect...) not to mention numbers past those things. Also the staggering times I see someone mention SM-g900t and ONLY that one with the occasional person ask if it is similar to sm-g900t3. Long post yeah but I am concerned and as far as I'm aware more info for these kinds of questions leads to faster results and better times for those trying to help.
I would post links to images to show more info but my account is new so...yeah, sorry about that. Aside that thanks for taking the time to read my rather long post and thanks again for all that offer any assistance.

I might suggest you read: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo.../compilation-s5-g900t-stock-firmware-t3042400. Just find the info for your phone. For the most part, using Odin is easy. If you used Heimdall to root your previous phone, you might want to use a different computer because the two programs can conflict with each other.

The art of explaining and organizing

Hello, wonderful and talented guys. I follow your work, but i have to say that work here is a bit not organized. So many ways to achive something, so many threads, and so many things that go wrong. I know there are hours of hard work and so on, so probably my critics dont go against you developers, but towards the site's organizers. Its damn hard to find a real solution to a situation. You are awesome programmers, but finding a good solution to something specific can be tricky as hell. I have a device, for example, that shows another model while trying recovery. No help about TWRP troubleshooting. I'm lost now as a noob (as you guys call), though i need basic info. Guides are, most of them, a couple of command lines, which dont help to people who dont even know what is that. Einstein said "everybody is a genius, but if you jugde a fish for his way of climbing a tree, he will always think he is stupid". You are awesome programmers, but please organize the site better. Or get people to do that. Some program, some explain, you dont have to be all in one. Thanks for your attention to this post, and i hope you are intellingent enough to get this as a suggestion. See you around
I fully agree with you..I have been in charge in of a forum a few years back and I kept things in one thread.
In this case here with the togari there was a few users who was very active here in the beginning mostly those who got their hands on one in the early summer.
Then it died off and the pinned posts are there and dead..no one writes in them.
And then there was the legendary user LordManhattan who got banned and reappeared and got banned again and again
I dunno why don't ask me why the user was banned..
Perhaps if no one else replies here I might consolidate all info here in one thread and keep it alive for a few years.
And finally ask a mod to remove the old pinned threads and replace it with a new "single" one thread.

It seems to me you divided your topic into two parts a technical issue and an argument.
I read your post as your main argument is gained towards your disappointment against the disorganized forum with topics hard to find an easy to follow 1, 2, 3 step answer to an issue.
And I agree with this.
Hence my suggestion that I might be willing to consolidate information to a new single pinned thread.
If you have a specific issue you want help with look in the different parts of the forum but more specifically
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z-ultra/help
If you looked through all pages and you don't find any other thread similar to your topic then start a new thread and ask your question.
You can also use the search function. Put in a single word and it will soon find other posts with this word included if you get a hit.
But I don't fully understand if your main issue is that the recovery reporting a different device from what you are using?
This was the case years ago when roms for example was ported from togari's little brother honami. But this was solved eventually.

My pleasure :highfive: I read a lot about android and was very excited when they announced android.
But I didn't buy one until the desire was released. I kept going with my iphone 1 and 3g modding with cydia.
I had a few htc desire pvt 1 and two pvt 4 with boatloads of devs solving problems and coming up with exotic mods. I still have my one x.
I recently got my hands on a desire a year ago when a friend had one that didn't boot. It turned out someone in the past had done s-off and flashed a data2sd rom and the sd card was accidentally wiped making it unable to boot.
I enjoyed every bit of the time took me to fix the phone and reminded me how android really was a different world back then. I understand that it is much more fun owning an HTC device by looking at any of their device forums as there is tons of roms and devs hanging out there just like the old days. Its what I miss with sony devices.. here is a small group of users that don't keep their devices for very long and the forum fades away in silence.
I have also had many samsung devices probably being the most confusing due to their naming of stock roms..THSMM338FHHH could be older than THSMRM338FHHH but newer than THSMRR348FHHA ..(??)
"worked whole night kept on reading carefully each step"
Something similar I think senior flashoholics have probably forgotten the horrifying ~30 minutes endlessly waiting for the phone to boot after flashing a rom or mod thinking..
"if my phone don't boot now I bricked my phone". "$1k is going down the drain if it don't boot in the next 2 min.."
Thank god we don't have that today. Back then flashing roms was living on the edge
Probably the most scary I've done is gaining s-off on our desire. http://alpharev.nl/
Several times the terminal returned some type of error and you're ready to smack your phone in the table :crying:
I had totally forgotten about "remote not allowed "! I hate that.
I've gotten that message so many times when rooting a phone and then suddenly it just works..
I think I eventually gave up on rooting the Wildfire S because of this error message..I followed the guide correctly but it did not work.
