ANDROID M - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone happen to know if Android M will be adding support for installing applications to external USB storage?

Id like to know that as well, but for the moment Im using foldermount to map the data and obb folders to the external usb and its working perfectly

You need to be rooted first to use foldermount, correct?

Yes, that is correct.

i need Android M to use my micro SD card as my main storage on my box but want can i do? my system is rooted and i have stickmont mounted with a USB 3.0 hub with 3 4TB drives for my media in Kodi can i still use foldermount with stickmount for my SD card

It's foldermount and I've not tried it through a hub. As long as you can see the drive in a file manager you should be able to map folders to it. If not your just need to run one of the drives directly from the usb3 port on the Sheild and run everything else through the hub on the other port

Thanks for the clarification. I was a bit confused on this myself.

I guess my main interest was ,can you install directly to external storage without the need for root or foldermount in Android M? Have any of you testers looked at this yet?

Android M allows you merge the external device with the internal storage capacity. it locks the external storage device to that android device but effectively shows it as internal storage and is used as such.

Quick question mate because I can't seem to get a definitive answer. Will it allow you to do that with external usb storage as well or just the sd card?

..

I have been on the fence on which version of Shield to purchase. I have no issue with foldermount but moving the data manually gets to be a pain in the butt. Even with foldermount once you start installing a games library moving just the obb data to external storage still fills up the internal drive pretty fast. These streaming boxes need a solution to connect external drives out of the box without any mods whatsoever which I hope M will fix? $300.00 for a Android Box is very steep when you consider a Xbox one is about the same price with current promotions.

I bought the 16 GB and don't regret it. With an old 32 GB micro SD and root hacks there is no issue of storage space even with half a dozen big games (e.g. Half-Life 2) and many smaller games and apps. Also, the 16 GB box is completely silent (which I imagine an SSHD wouldn't be after a few years). I store my media collection on a NAS that wouldn't even fit on the 500 GB anyway. Furthermore I think they've announced (over on Nvidia's official forum) that SD card write access will be enabled in firmware upgrade v2.0, which is the next to be released and presumably is based on Android M. I simply wouldn't pay $300 for a TV box, $200 was already a stretch.

With foldermount I have mapped the obb and data folders to external usb 3. You shouldn't have to move data manually, once set it will just go there automatically. I've got 2.5ish gig used on the internal which is just the stock rom and a few apps and I've used about 50gig on the usb3 with my mapped folders and some Roms. I can't envisage ever running out of space on the internal, as its basically just holding the stock rom and any apk's I install.

How did you map folders to your external drive? And you mapped them and now they move automatically? Can you talk me through the process?

You need root and the paid version of foldermount obviously and you need to have a mouse to navigate the setup because you can't set it up using just the controller. Other than that its pretty straightforward, select the folder you want to move and foldermount will suggest a location to move it to. By default it will map to the external sd card but there is a little box at the top right hand corner and if you click it you can select your own location. It will then offer to move everything already in the folder to the new location. This may take some time obviously and you wont see the notification to say that it was running to be patient. Then click the box in setting that says apply on boot and your all done.

No
I don't think Android M will support installing applications to external Usb storage.
Android is always more inclined to using persistant storage for apps / media / whatever. Which is why nexus phones don't have micro sd slot. I wouldn't think Android will support this feature anytime in near future.

This is a feature of Android M, that phones with a micro SD card, you can merge it with your internal storage, but the catch is the phone/tablet whatever device has Android M on it, it encrypts the card and makes it unusable on any other device. So although we gain an extra few gigs or whatever size card you have, you loose the ability to have it as portable storage without formatting it again.

Ok, was unaware of this. But, Such feature is only applicable to microsd cards.

I think the OP asked about external USB storage which should be Pen Drive via OTG. Still, it cannot be used for apps.

[Q] after I have rooted.....

So I am going to pick up a NT next week reguardless but I need to know. If you root the NT, does that clear up being able to use ALL of the 16GB internal storage? I know that as it comes, only 1GB of non B&N contact. Or do I have to install a different ROM to use all of the 16GB

Sorry....I do not have the tablet yet so I dont fully understand. So if I flash the Gapps and get the full market. I still can't install past the 1GB but if I "side load" (I believe that is what you are explaining) then I can exceed the 1GB and use the other 15GB?
Please let me know if I am understanding this corectly
np, I dont have it either...yet.
So what I've read, sideloading and installing apps from markets (amazon, google android) all goes to the 15gb storage. When you plug in usb to computer, only the 1gb is available to transfer files. So use an external micro sdcard to transfer files from computer and then use root explorer on the tablet to move from the 1gb to 15gb storage to get around it all.

[Q] Emulated SD card? How the phone perceives SD and internal storage

Hi,
It is my first Sony android phone (with a SD card slot). I was wondering if this oddity with internal storage and SD card relationship is across all Sony androids, or unique to ZU.
Basically, when I use Astro File manager, it looks like there are 2 SD cards mounted. I guess SDcard0 is the internal storage, and SDcard1 is the actual SD card.
Now, I also see an ''emulated'' SDcard, whatever that is.
MY MAIN PROBLEM IS THAT NOT ONLY DO I NOT UNDERSTAND THE WAY IT IS LAID OUT, I ALSO CANNOT MOVE APPS (and more importantly, massive data that goes for these apps) TO SD CARD TO PRESERVE INTERNAL STORAGE.
All those apps in play stores don't seem to work, because none of them actually recognise an external SDcard storage in y Z ultra.
Do I need to wait for ZU to be rootable so that these problems can be overcome?
Or is there a neat trick to get around this?
Thanks in advance

Once rooted you can use an app like foldermount, but you are going to have to wait for the root to be released first.

Thanks! Please tell me that it is a matter of time before Z ultra is also rootable. If so, I can wait patiently:fingers-crossed:
Has there ever been an unrootable android thus far?

Hi, still waiting for my XZU. BTW, what do you mean that your apps can't recognize the external storage? My experience with other phones with 'emulated' internal storage didn't prevent the apps from recognizing the 'real' external SD card.. There is usually also an option to choose which storage is used as default - at least on my previous huawei ascend P1. Can anyone confirm this on their XZU?
edit: as default here means as the main storage for apps data (picture for camera apps, downloads from browsers, downloadable content for some apps, etc), not the installed apps and system data

What I meant by 'not recognising' (I could have phrased it better) is that yes, I can access it from any apps except that they are labelled as SDcard0 and SDcard1. What I tried to say was that for those not familiar, it seems confusing. If the internal memory is actually an SD card hidden away deep inside, I can kind of understand, but the way this phone is set up, it looks as if there are 2 external SD cards (which of course, there aren't) and no internal storage.
If there is a way to choose where certain apps can store their relevant data, I would like to know how for VIBER, Beyond Pod (podcast player) and Androrec (call recorder). I am assuming that there is no systematic way of selecting storage destination (via android or Xperia interface), and that these apps don't offer such features in their settings, and that we need to wait till the day some hard working genius figures out how to root the ZU.
Where?

When installing apps off playstore, where is it saved? sdcard0, sdcard1, extsd, emulated?
When using foldermount, what should be the destination folder (to mount it on my external sd card)?
I really want to know more about those storage locations because it confuses me all the time especially some of them contain the same files
Thank you

Using solid explorer and things are far more clear on it (recognize directly which is what) but to make it simple:
-SDcard0 and emulated are the internal memory
-SDcard 1 and extra are your SDcard
So if you wish to move an app to your SDcard send it to SDcard 1.

[Q] LG Realm 4.4.2 - Setting SD Card as Primary Storage?

Hi all,
I just got my hands on a Boost Mobile LG Realm. It turns out this phone only has 1gb of internal storage. I popped in a micro sd thinking it would solve the issue. It turns out that you cannot save apps to the SD card. Shoot, some of my apps don't even have the option of setting the SD card as the primary save location.
I have done some research, but alas I still need some assistance. Can someone tell me how I can use my SD card as my primary storage on Kit Kat 4.4.2? I have discovered that my phone has an emulated external storage so that it stops the SD card from being used as a primary storage.
I have successfully rooted the phone via Towelroot, and I have frozen/uninstalled some bloat ware using Titanium Backup
Edit: I have attached my vold file via dropbox: dropbox com/s/ihpfoo4h79kaphx/vold.fstab?dl=0
Like I said I have done some research and the code in my vold file does not match the ones in the guides.

Your gonna be kinda stuck. While you can move the apps to sdcard with a few tools the app data will still be on the internal storage. There are a few ways to move that also but due to the way sd cards work on Android it kills app performance and may even stop the app from working all together. This is due to android removing all sd card code from stock Android and each OEM has to add it back on their own so coding is different from one device to another.

Apps to SD

Hey guys, I just got this amazing phone/tablet/game console.
The 32GB internal storage is little bit not enough.
Is it possible to move Games or obb files to SD or even better format SD as internal storage?
Speed is not a problem i have 128GB UHS-3 SD card.
Thanks for any help.
You could try to format the sdcard as adoptable storage as described in this article. I am using ithis on my phone (which has Nougat 7.1.1) together with a 64GB card. 32GB as adoptable storage and 32GB as normal sdcard. But it should work on Oreo, too.
Thats what i want to do but it looks like the option is missing...
you need to do it by using adb on the command line later on it's mounted correctly automatically
Edit: I just tried it, unfortunately there are some permissions missing ...
Bought 128 Go scard for my 8.4 M5.
Can't find a way to move apps on sdcard or use adoptable storage...
It does not seem available.

There is a setting in Developer Options to force allow app installs to external storage. I'm sure there are also root apps for the purpose.
Of course, unless an app is really large or you are running real low on free space, you don't really want to install apps to an SD card.

Yes, I can confirm that only the data is affected. I have activated "Force allow apps on external" in the developer options (third to last entry) and I have also set "Storage" -> "Default location" to "SD Card".
Nevertheless the apps I have then installed (Drastic -> not maovable my default, Deus Ex Go -> movable by default) both installed to the internal memory and only the data is moved.
This being said, for everyone with root and € 1,99 to spare I highly recommend Link2SD Plus. This app can not only move entire apps to the SD card, but also only the OBB-files (but only in the paid version). This reduces e.g. Lego Marvel Superheroes to a managable 12,97 MB in the internal memory and 1,84 GB on the SD card. Mission accomplished, IMO.
Though if you want to squeeze that additional 5 MB out and move everyting to the SD, Link2SD requires a separate partition on the card. So I rather stick with moving the OBB only.
One last remark regarding Adopted Storage: I have used that in 2 devices and it signifficantly reduced the life of both cards (Samsung EVO 64 GB). In the gaming tablet (NVIDIA Shield K1) the card stopped working after about 9 months, causing the tablet to reboot after a few minutes. Removing the card fixed this. In the phone (Sony Z5) the card lasted longer, about 13 months, but failed in a similar manner. And during all this other (and older) EVO cards I have bought for the family still perform well.
So I might have had bad luck or maybe I did something wrong but currently I can not recommend using Adopted Storage.

Oh so that's what the default storage thing does, I clicked on it thinking it would change the default save for in the future, but rather it deleted some game files (obb I think-no progress deleted). So I have to download it again, quite annoying as currently I have poor wifi, and the 1.5gb download would take well ages
Also the default location setting made VLC not see the difference between internal storage and sd card, it was like all merged together in "internal storage"
**edit**
Also it is a bit buggy, i downloaded an app with a hard-drive connected to the tablet through USB and it downloaded to that! I unplugged it and got loads of errors.
This a deal breaker for me so no adoptable storage?
Can anyone please recommend any other options for adoptable storage. I am rooted and have tried openkirin ROMs but none have support for adoptable storage. Have also tried some apps in the play store but none are working as intended. All I just want is to use an SD card as part of internal adoptable storage.
I need this as well, happy to install custom ROM if this is whats needed but would like to extend beyound the 32gb with a card
Solved in Developer Options
1. System
2. About tablet
3. Tap Build number until you get the message: You are now a developer
4. Go back to the System menu and tap Developer Options
5. Bottom of the menu, enable Force allow apps on external storage
All new apps will now be stored on the SD. Apps already installed cannot be migrated. These steps can be followed without root

I'm using this on my MediaPad M5 10 and it works. All my apps are being installed on the SD. This solution is based on practical experience not theory.
If you ensure the default storage location is set to external storage...
I realise I missed some steps. Here follows exactly what I did.
1. Factory reset
2. After initial setup, format the SD card
3. Go to Settings
3. Storage
4. Change the default storage to external
5. System
6. About tablet
7. Tap Build number until you get the message: You are now a developer
8. Go back to the System menu and tap Developer Options
9. Bottom of the menu, enable Force allow apps on external storage
All my apps now install on the SD. I use this tablet for gaming so the limited storage was a deal breaker for me until I did this.

About 12GB is system data on the internal storage.
After installing 43 GB of apps (Games) my internal storage has 18GB and the SD Card has 37GB

Whats the best way to use SD cards on the MI A3?

I am new to Android One and up until now used microSD cards exclusively to save the images and videos shot by the phone cam and for offline navigation software maps (Sony, Huawei, and so on)
Now Android 9 on the Mi A3 gives me two options:
--> use as "portable memory"
--> use as "internal memory"
When I use it as internal memory, many apps store files on it although I actually only want the photos to be kept save on it in case of phone failure... I also read, that in case the phone fails I can't copy files from the sd card as it is encrypted to be only read by phone itself? Is that true?
Thank you for your help.
Pretty sure you should use it as portable
storage. I have all my music on there and any backup file, photos, etc, I can save on there too. You also avoid encryption this way, too, but I'm not sure about that.

Then you should definately use it as portable. Elsy you will have problems reading it in any other device.

Yes.
To format it as internal should use the SD storage as an extension to the internal storage. So, if you got a 64 G internal storage and add a 64 G card as internal, you should see a continuous block "internal" memory wit size 128G. Since I do currently not need the space on my SD, I gave it a try. But strangely afterwards "memory" showed internal 128G (I have the 128G model with an 128G card...) and the card as 256G.
I reverted to prtable anyway for the same reson; to use it as backup storage device.
