Z2 tab or nexus 9 - Xperia Z2 Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I currently have a z2 tablet and have some one who wants to trade for a Nexus 9.
Any thoughts from my xda pals.
I know Sony releases binaries to aosp(M preview included) so timeline/release schedule isn't that much a difference.

The only existing tablet I would trade my z2 for is a z4.

have you played with a n9?

I haven't but have read a lot of reviews. Build quality was called out a lot. I like how easy it is to root nexus devices and don't like Sony drm keys but until I see a better waterproof tab with a bigger screen I am not interested. My phone is a nexus 6.

What the hell has this to do with "tablet S General"?
It really has nothing to do with Sony but for the record, I'm not buying the Nexus 7 tablet, for a start I don't like the fact it has a phone user interface, yes, it's smart but it's Jelly Bean, any device with Jelly Bean would act in the same way - seeing as though Sony has confirmed Jelly Bean for this device than i'll wait thanks!

I am waiting until they release a Nexus10. I bought the original Galaxy Tab 7" thinking that I preferred the smaller tablet as I could grip it in one hand. Then I bought the Sony Tablet S and I love the larger screen.

I'm with Gramon on this one. As cheap as a Nexus 7 is, it's missing too many features for me, and that 7" form factor is just too small after upgrading my old GT-P1000 7" Galaxy Tab for the Sony's glorious 9.4". I would never go back.
For an added bonus, I don't know what problems you guys are having. I have the occasional WiFi disconnect (saves battery so I live with it), but everything else about mine is still great.

Totally agreed. I want a nexus7 just for the ease of carrying, nothing more. You cant do anything productive with a 7inch tablet. it really depends with what youre using the tablet for. For me, its reading magazines and comics, so 7inches is too small for a comfortable viewing (ive tried the galaxy tab7, not so nice) so 10 inches is the most appropriate, for me. It really depends on what youre mostly using it for. I agree with the wifi thing, it saves battery.
For the mean time ill be sticking to my tablet s till the xperia tablet is out, the folded magazine design still wins me over other tablets.

I swear I should just keep this on clipboard!
The Nexus 7 is cheap and relatively capable, but doesn't have have any of the bells and whistles, and most importantly is much smaller at 7". This will be particularly noticeable when reading and watching videos. It is however much more portable.
The Surface is currently unavailable so pricing is an unknown at this point. The Surface is much larger and is aimed at more of a laptop-replacement than most others. It runs Windows 8 which you will either like or absolutely detest. It will come in two variants: the more power-efficient, thinner and lighter but feature-limited ARM version and the larger x86 version with extra ports, processing power and the ability to run full Windows including legacy apps. The OS is its biggest feature and that's a personal choice.
The XPERIA tablet is designed as a replacement for the Tablet S and is slightly thinner and lighter, but with a more conventional form factor. Beyond that, who knows. It hasn't been announced yet (expect that at IFA), but it will probably be a Tegra 3-powered device similar to the S, but a bit more conventional. This is all complete hearsay, so do not put confidence in it.
My final message would be: don't decide now. Wait until after IFA and after more details about the new generation of tablets emerge. Then decide, but remember the golden rule:
There is no best tablet, only the best tablet for a specific purpose.

Also, this might just be me, but if you already have a Galaxy Note, a 7" Nexus 7 is probably not the right choice for you. There's only going to be 2 inches of difference between them. This is just my opinion, of course, but make sure you try out a Nexus before you go buying one.

Sony Xperia S - Dilemma

Hello everyone.
I'm at rly big dilemma right now. So, I'm wondering if i should buy Sony Xperia S or Galaxy Note 10.1. The most important thing is that i have to decide till 30.11 because there's an promotion in my shop. Xperia S + Euti with keyboard in one price.
The main question is that i won't make a big mistake, mainly im concerned about Sony's support for Tabs. I'm sure that Samsung won't leave Tab just like that without any updates and most of developers are now working with Galaxy i guess.
SO, do You think that Xperia S will get updates and developers will take care of that model? Because my friend with older one is very disapointed about Sony's updates, etc.
Thx for any answer and sorry if i did topic in wrong section.
The xperia tablet s is no developer darling. Far from it. Sony is extraordinary slow on updates. My local support didn't even know if jelly bean were "in the making" for the xperia. But official, international Sony has confirmed it. But considering devices like the Motorola zoom allready got jelly bean, despite being 2+ years old, Sony is really not a particulaly good OEM, when it comes to updates. About the tablet it self : really bugged. Really bad software, mediocre battery life, and filled to the brim with bloatware. Fortunately, root access has been achieved, so that can be dealt with. Design and feel of the tab is awesome, but software wise, it's close to disaster. Far from finished.. I say, put your money on a nexus 10. Same price, better specs, vanilla Android and better support from google and developers alike. Just my 2 cents.

Yes I tuner to the Xperia this tablet is not for programmers and adventurous. But the Xperia Tablet is a very very useful device - top is the display and the processing - up to now I just noticed a bug - Standby Wifi Bug ... but otherwise everything works super - I have when buying and I'm also expecting no desire to torment me with Custom Roms have more bugs that have been adapted from programmed Hobbyprogs /. Previously I had an LG V900 and the LG IPAD2 there was only one update us .. but from 3.0 to 3.1 and there was already ICS out then the device is not supported in any further a USB connection without function and not a fix. Samsung is not exactly famous for its updates only when the new series - when the unit is 2 years old it was then with updates ... Also, the Google phones and tablets not convince me ... In the end it's like with all things, there is nix perfect one must always make swab ... I already have the Xperia S phone and am very excited so I decided for the Xperia S Tablet ... and I have not regretted it or not root task of the manufacturer is to close the gaps and has the Sony made you can not even be angry ... and JB is certainly the end of January 2013

I agree with Raedek
Premium feel, awesome design and above average display. It could be a winner if not for the buggy software. I couldn't get past the random shutdowns while watching movies or in sleep mode. I've had a positive experience with the nexus 7 so I tend to agree with the suggestion to go with a Nexus 10. Good luck with your decision
Personally I wouldn't touch the Sony S v2 tablet.
I made the mistake with the first Sony Tablet S when it was heavily discounted only to learn that this tablet has very poor developer support: no ROMs and can't even do a nand backup. Updates are also non-existent.
My Sony S is pretty much junk ATM IMHO.
My advice would be to avoid and go for something that is more widely supported (i.e Xoom or Samsung tablets) by developers.
Good luck.

Totally disagree with all the comments here which seem to come from people that owned the previous tablet, but not the S2.
I don't spend my money lightly and after last years model, I wanted to be sure this was the right tabletl before I spent money on another Sony product. It wasn't the wrong choice, the Xperia Tablet S is a fantastic bit of kit, I don't have any bugs with mine (or bugs that affect me) and it wasn't purchased because of the development support.
If you want development, go with the Nexus 10, but if it's not development you want, the Xperia Tab is for you. Have had it since day 1 and love it!!!

Agreed. Battery life excluded. I like the device, I own it, but it can be underwhelming at times. Personally, I don't like the Nexus 10. Feels cheap and the outstanding specs, like screen resolution and contrast seem subpar comparing to the Xperia Tablet S, even though it embodies half the screen resolution. Seems silly, but that is what I see.
The xperia tablet is one of the best currently on the market. The only android tab that could outdo it in my mind right now is the nexus 10 because of the awesome display and ram...but no sd card slot so if you want lots of storage you have to pay 500.

Buying a XTZ still recommendable now?

Is it still recommendable to buy a XTZ now given that the nexus 7 has already been released and the note 10.1 has been refreshed? I just sold my ipad 4 and was originally set on buying the nexus 7 but am hesistant because of all the build quality problems.
How is the AOSP program coming along? Are the CM builds usable? What sort of bugs are there?
Thank you

I literally Just bought an XTZ 32GB this week (Right after watching Samsung announce the the new Note 10.1), and in the two days I've had it I have ZERO regrets. This sucker is FAST, and the screen is gorgeous!
Haven't used the CM builds yet but I understand there are stable ones out.

I would buy another XTZ as opposed to the Nexus or Note tablets, there are too many issues with the Nexus tablets for me and the Note tablets have terrible dev support thanks to Samsung and their lies.
The XTZ is amazing, the AOSP builds have everything working except HDMI/HLL. That's not supported on any device with CM though as far as I know.

I would definitely buy the XTZ. That's a great tablet, especially for the form factor.
It's brillant to watch movies too. I recently did transatlanctic flights and was happy with the battery drain: only around 15% per movie.
The battery drain is much more important when playing "hard" such as Real Racing 3, and you feel the tablet heat! But I guess this would be the same with all other tabs.
I consider buying it also but:
What about that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2419767
Does 2x Dualshock controllers work wireless via bluetooth?

IFA is over and you know whats coming this year.
I am using cm10.2. Next step will be a multiboot solution with Ubuntu Touch.
Don`t forget do buy a dock. This is very important->no more opening of the ports (this can really suck)
Color adjustments (white is not Paperwhite) problems at low brightness, bleeding and this torsion problem exist. @cm10.2 i never noticed the torsion problem and the bleeding is minimal.
CM is usable, but i think(know) the SonyUI and 4.2 are a great deal, too.
i would recommend it thou the home screen is still laggy with the 4.2 update
nova etc solve it but cant understand why sony could not fix it
one ques for fellow xtz owners - does appgratis load and open properly on ur xtz ?
Just arrived today ....
I just opened the box a couple hours ago. Fired it up and the battery was at 60%.
Can't put it down.
I was using an HP Touchpad with CM9. Big difference!
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this tablet!
Tablet is still awesome. I just wish I had a case that was as nice to use as the Poetic Slimline but without the weight... So far none of the other cases are as nice.
Iv used mine for some time now, its a great tablet however I think something like the nexus 7, or Z ultra is more comfortable for me, Im trying to sell mine but here in India i dont know anyone who wants to buy it.

It's still the best case i've seen by far. Just that it basically weighs as much as the tablet.
FYI
If you are using a case without magnetic lock. you can insert a small magnet inside your case cover. magnetic sensor is located at the left side of the front camera( screen facing you ).
screen will automatically turned off when the cover is closed and it will turned on when you open it.
:good:
Poetic slimline from Amazon
I ordered the Poetic slimline from Amazon and I can confirm there is access to the charging port and the weight factor is no big deal.

Glad to see so many like this tablet, I'm giving serious thought to buying one. I sold my Asus transformer tf300t, my last 2 android phones have been Samsung, my wife has a nexus 7 and I've never owned a Sony android device. The xperia z is probably the best looking tablet I've ever seen and the video reviews I have watched of it just make me want it more.

Okay.
If you want a 10.1" tablet I'll still recommend the Tablet Z.
If you're happy with a 7" Tablet go for the new Nexus 7.
Both tablets have the same processor, so you won't really notice a difference in performance.
As for the fact that the Nexus 7 runs stock Android without bloatware, it runs slightly faster than the XTZ, but not that much.

So there was no successor presented at IFA, which makes me wonder why?
The Xperia Z was announced in January and released in February, now we already have the Z1.
The Xperia Tablet Z was announced in February and released in May, and although it's still a good device, it would have needed the some overhaul (things like IP58 instead of IP57, additional GSM voice communication, 3GB RAM, Snapdragon 800 + Adreno 330, better camera).
I am especially curious because the Xperia Tablet Z is already on the remaining stock list at our mobile network operator and pretty much sold out.
I've never had a tablet before, but I'll get two for free when I renew two data plans at the beginning of next year, so I have some more time to wait and see, but if nothing was announced at IFA, when is the next possibility for a successor to the XTZ?

If updates is important and you love the ultra, check out the GPE edition. I'd say sony version will have support until Sept 2015.
If you're looking for something updated with a big screen there are lots on the horizon...

Lumina had a look - a bit heavy, no option for screen mirroring - its pretty much useful a useful feature for playing media. No inclination to Huwaei - never really liked them yet
Screen size and display resolution is one aspect I am looking for - but not a firmware upgrade which I would love to have but low priority.
4.4 will do well for a year as any newer upgrades will take looking at current trends at least 9 months.
7" + sizes a for sure no-no for me. Didnt see Nexus 6 specs yet since its going to be launched later this year - Aug / Sep
6806 or 6833 - I dont see a real diff except GPE - Sony stock works fine for me, no complaints. just need LTE..

Not so sure yet of ultra 2 :good: since still it is in rumor mill. Rather spend $$ on Nok x, would prefer to grab a something good and move on

Hmm, the new HTC One is coming this month, but we've all seen it already and I'm personally not impressed by its design, but that's just me.
- Samsung released the S5 and that about it really. They have the Mega which they'll probably update soon, but it will still be a mod-range device.
- HTC is going to release the new One and Desire etc. No idea if they'll update the Max.
- LG released that.. phablet thing last week? Or? I'm not sure.
- Motorola has the G and X. No phablets.

I would not trade the quality of builds and materials of Sony phones/phablets with those of Huawei's... I think that in terms of these Sony is the top brand nowadays, like HTC was until a few years ago. Asus is also good imho, Samsung is far beyond and I never really liked LG products.

today went around shopping - well didn't buy one yet ! believe me - didn't like any of the models out there, well S5 Z2 etc are yet to be out.
as you said, true the screen size is just perfect at present for usage - neither too big nor too small and the reason I am trying to stick to it.
will do a round of window shopping for another day or two and will get one - right now top of list 6833 or 6806. Nothing else  well I see a price break of close to $100 currently on ultras.
7" tabs are OK but not for regular use outside. have got sammy Tab Plus for 2 years now and got 4.4 - works like a charm. LG curve didn't like it.

:good: gave up search.
will be getting one tomorrow or day after for sure Ultra. looking for 6806 or 6833, not finding in stores here. may pick one up on transit.
Lol.. this thread literally sums up my day
Received brand new 6833 after returning my damaged 6802 on warranty. Decided I could sell it unopened and buy myself something new.
Considered the options (much the same as those suggested here) and decided very best option is to unbox the new Sony beast sitting in front of me

Is this the right phone for me?

Hi
I'm thinking about buying this phone, but... with some special details. and I wanted your opinion.
I'm not really looking for a phone, I'm looking to replace my nexus 7 GSM (2012) tablet.
It cannot be something bigger than the N7 (in physical dimensions), it must have 3g connectivity and it has to be an upgrade (better specs).
These requests pretty much clean all the tablets, as only the 7'' and (some) 8'' are small enough and only very few have 3g or 4g.
So I thought of a phablet, and the Z ultra appeared on the search.
I know the screen is smaller, but I don't expect that difference to be a problem. I'll try to find other big phones in a store to compare.
I have a Z1 compact as a phone, and from the looks of it, the Z ultra is exactly the same, only with a bigger screen and battery.
This means the same rom support (cyanogenmod), the same performance (I'm very happy with the Z1 compact on that) and bigger battery and screen for movies and games.
So, am I right, do you think this is a good choice for me?
you can go with the xperia z3 compact tablet as well, that tablet has a sim card slot.
Currently I use it as LTE tablet and it works fine.

I didn't even know it existed...
It's bigger (yet not too big), faster, has more battery, full CM support... It's also more expensive, but maybe it's worth it.
Thanks! I'll really consider it.
Just to let you know, my ZU hasn't served me that well as a tablet, because 1) the touch panel mis-registers under multi-touch situations, 2) the speaker produces constant buzzing sound and 3) battery life is mediocre for real.
I have a TabPRO 8.4 WiFi, but this thing also has 3G and LTE variants. It might be a bit too big to your taste, but aside from the looks, this tablet is the best I've had my hands on.

Surprisingly, it's not too big (but it's close to).
Here the biggest problem is the price, the LTE variant is a lot more expensive than the Z ultra or the Z3 tablet compact already mentioned here.
Anyway, thanks for the opinion, the battery life was a concern for me, and it seems it is a problem.
Actually, after that last suggestion I re-checked the prices... and both the tablets presented are much more expensive than the Z ultra...
Even with the spec difference and the possible battery problem, it's still the one I think I'll choose.

Strange, TabPRO 8.4 retails for about the same price as Z3TC here. Also, most of my devices are bought second-hand, and in the cases of ZU and TabPRO, they cost me ~$125 and ~$190 respectively, while Z3TC can go up to $250+ (yes, used - absurdly pricey).
To me the extra price made quite a difference - aside from the looks, TabPRO gives me a much more comfortable tablet experience and fits snugly in my small carry bag.
There are indeed very few devices in the price range of ZU that can match its specs and screen, and for that it is a unicorn I don't actually want to let go of... But the small problems mentioned in the last post proved more than annoying for me. YMMV, as always.

You should compare Z Ultra with 7" LTE tablet like Nexus 7 or Asus ME572CL.
CPU is far superior.
Nexus 7 does not support memory card (ZU can take 128GB)
ME572CL has locked (not unlockable) bootloader
Don't forget Z Ultra can be used as phone when needed.
Xperia Z Ultra is great in terms of build quality and speed.
But if you are looking into alternatives, if you just want tablet (not phone) you may look at Asus or Lenovo line of products.
Also, you may look at Motorola Nexus 6. Now that new Nexus phones are announced previous Nexus prices are dropping. It is a great phone, large screen, and with the Android 6.0 it works better than before (according to several user feedbacks).
Good Luck!

Be aware the Intel X3 based tablet is NOT rootable, and the performance is poor (only 7000 Quadrant).
