Why is it that when I'm on aosp/aokp ROMs my signal is terrible? At work in the same spot I used to get 3g and decent speeds, on PAC ROM (and any other aosp ROM I've tried) I get 1x and most of the time my phone will have no data at all and I have to wait until it finds a signal. I've tried flashing the zv8 and zva modems and yields the same results. Is this just an aosp ROM issue?
Looks that way on my phone too, bit my speeds are the same.

I've noticed that since going from my Captivate to the GSII for AT&T, the internet is really slow inside buildings. Sometimes I will have full bars on 3G and HSPA+ and I can't download anything from the Market. I'm running CM 7.1. Does anyone have any idea what I can do to fix the issue?
I would hit up the search button. It seems like a lot of people just have slow data speeds on the sgs2, regardless of the ROM. There's a bunch of different fixes some have used, just search and see if any of them work for you.
Flash a different modem. This helped tremendously with my data speeds.

This is the thread.
Thanks for the help guys. I flashed a new modem and that helped.
Coming from a HTC Desire, I bought a 6 month old Galaxy S II off a colleague.
I used to run CM7 on the Desire, and was happy with it. So I wanted to install it on the Galaxy as well.
Figuring out Odin and installing CWM was fairly easy, so I was set up with CM7 in no time.
The issue I have is that no matter what modem I use, I can't get a reliable cell signal out of my phone. I've tried some (10ish) different modems from this page.
All of them get 'emergency calls only' sometimes, and dBm values of -95 at best, sometimes going over -106 before dropping connection (emergency calls only).
Signal bars usually stay at 2/4.
If I have connection, I do seem to be able to max out my 3G connection (capped at 1Mbps by the operator) with some modems, but not all.
After restoring stock firmware, I get -77dBm and better, 4/4 signal bars most of the time.
Stock firmware uses XXKE7 modem.
When I tried to use that modem in CM7, I got the same bad results.
I am in Belgium on the Mobile Vikings carrier, which uses the BASE network.
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this problem?

I'm not sure if you have to tinker with the phones APN settings there in Belgium. Sometimes that is the way to troubleshoot poor data connectivity.
Google "apn settings" and the name of your carrier and see what you can come up with.
Other than that I'd just suggest trying different modems. Hope that helps

It is the open source drivers CM based roms use. I see the same on every device I have run CM based roms on. The generic drivers have less radio and wifi signal strength. They don't use the built in hardware to the Max like OEM drivers do.

you can try to flash this rom ----http://bbs.nduoa.com/android_gphone_thread-227339-1-1.html
你可以刷这个试一试 这是一个中国朋友修改的 cm7 rom 估计会解决你这个问题

I would not advice this.
When I flash a ICS rom I only get 1x data speed. The Stock rom odexed from 2.17 works fine. Shows 3g speeds. Do I need a different kernel or updated radio?

The stock ROM lies with respect to 3g vs 1x. It always shows 3g even if you are really 1x. Some of the ICS roms (MeanROM in particular) has fixed that so it will show correctly. So, it appears you went from 3g to 1x, but you were really 1x the whole time.
I am not 100% sure if this applies as it could be some other issue, but that is usually the issue between stock vs. custom Roms with respect to 3g vs 1x.
go to ur epst open evdo and set preferred mode to automatic
I started flashing custom roms to my current phone 2 years ago, but now it started to bother me about my data connection. When I was in stock, I had a very reliable data connection (4G I believe). However now, it does not even connect to 4G. Is flashing a custom ROM (originally GB, now JB) affecting my data connection? This bothers me a lot as whenever I'm not in wifi range the internet becomes very unreliable, especially when using it with GPS.
Another potential related topic is modems. Is that really related to my problem? How do I know if I have an updated version?
Settings, about device, baseband version is your modem. Different roms will flash different modems. If you used to get good connection, then you flashed a rom, and now you don't the modem could be the problem. Try a different modem. Flash it and use it a day or two before you flash a different modem as it may take a day or two to settle in. If after a day or two you are still unhappy flash a different one and try it out. For me in my area I prefer UCLE5, but you may operate better under a different modem.

Two answers.
1. Yes, different firmware loaded with different modem will affect your mobile connection. If you know your original modem, then reflash it again.
2. How do you know that it was 4G? Based on tested data rate or just purely depended on the little 4G icon showed on the status bar?
Just fyi, SS stock ROM always indicates 4G even though it's not 4G rate while the custom ROMs such AOKP does indeed displays the correct mobile speed.
When I was on MIUI, dont know which one, but based on 5.1, I had very good signal, and even had 4g. And then I installed RR 5.7.4 and my signal is not very good and I cant get 4g to work. What can I do to get better signal?
