replaced 3rd generation kdx7 with 4.5.3 - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hey guys, just wanted to ask what would be the best route to unlock the bootloader if possible on my replacement hdx7 3rd gen? It has 4.5.3
I want it rooted and romed

You can't. Unlocking the bootloader is only possible on versions 3.2.3.2 and below.

yeah I thought so thanks for the reply!

I can't easily access your previous posts (XDA search engine is down) so I'll mention you can rollback to 4.5.2 and install Safestrap v4 which supports Nexus v4 and CM11 (not CM12). Overall experience mirrors that obtained with unlocked bootloader with those two roms and certainly better than the FrankenKindle created by layering gapps onto FireOS. Apologies if you knew this already...just covering bases.

Unlocked bootloader for ME7?

I wanted to know if everyone has given up on unlocking the bootloader for ME7. I'm so tired of SafeStrap.
Also is there an UPDATED list of compatible SafeStrap ROMs? The list I've been using is old as hell.
Please help. I want to use anything other than the Google Edition ROM v6. It's quite old.
Thanks in advance.

I understand your frustration, i am in the same boat. Can't wait for me7 bootloader unlock if that will ever come. But I would try hyperdrive Rom, seems like that's the best one around except for bluetooth media control that doesn't work. But other than that SafeStrap and hyperdrive is a decent combo...considering...

I can't find a good mirror for the latest compatible Hyperdrive. Can you either send me a link, upload yours to a site like mediafire, or send me a Google Drive link?

[Q] Root Kindle Fire 4.5.2

Hello, I have recently updated my kindle fire hdx 7 to 4.5.2 on accident. Is there any way i can root it or downgrade it? I eventually want to put TWRP on my kindle fire, but as of now i am unable to. Can i get some help with this?
Read through this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/general/rollback-to-devices-upgraded-to-4-x-t2946946
If you do decide to follow through with this method, they'll most likely downgrade you to 13.3.2.8, so no TWRP; the closest thing you'll get to it is Safestrap.

So you think that 3.2.8 can run safetrap to boot another rom? Wouldnt that trigger the eFuse?

The fuse is already blown when you downgrade from FireOS 4. You can still root it, install Safestrap and all that — it just means that you can't downgrade your tablet any further with any of the methods currently available.

I'm not sure you're entirely correct. Amazon downgraded me to 3.2.8, and I'm rooted, but i dont think that you can use safetrap on 3.2.8

You can use Safestrap on 3.2.8, confirmed here, check posts #9 and #10

Interesting. So basically you can boot any rom? For example can you boot another version of Android lets say 4.4, or it must be the same as the stock rom?

With Safestrap on FW 3.2.7-8 you cant use ROMs with custom kernels like CM 11 or Nexus 2.0.4.
ROM for Safestrap must be compatible with kernel on stock rom, so your only option for now is Nexus 2.0.2 (its based on 3.2.4, but seems to be compatible with 3.2.8) - if you want something else than rooted stock with Gapps...

[Q] Stock, rooted 4.X ROM?

Are there any pre-rooted stock ROMs based on Fire OS 4.X that I can flash without losing my unlocked bootloader? I'm currently on version 3.1.0.

Nexus v4, CM11 and CM12 are your choices. If you want FireOS v4 you need to use a special tool/procedrue to remove all components except the base OS (what gets written to the system partition) from the stock .bin. There's a thread somewhere in the HDX forums; I'd have to hunt it down if interested (beware: not noob friendly).
Are you asking because you want to retain some of the unique functionality in FireOS? If so there are workarounds to all but a handful of features. Just need to identify what you are looking for.

I would love if the Fire OS 4 launcher could be ported to another ROM, but I can't see that being possible without some huge modifications.
Also, I found a TWRP flashable stock 4.5.2 ROM:

Yep - there is a handful of users who prefer Amazon's launcher which has some nice features. That said it seems unlikely someone would take on the port given the work involved and relatively low interest. Glad you found a version of 4.5.2 that can be safely flashed. Enjoy!

Could you link to the thread you're speaking of, please? I'm definitely interested in updating to Fire OS 4.5.5.

Believe this is the one. You might want to start reading from the end as there are some recent notations about 4.5.4 and 4.5.5. Material is not for the faint of heart but not overwhelming difficult once you get past the terminology. I have not messed with the tools; you will need to reach out to @draxie with questions/comments. Don't for forget to give draxie a 'thanks' if his tools help you.

No custom ROMs for 4th gen devices. You best option IMHO is to permit an upgrade to FireOS v5, reroot, eliminate bloat and enjoy the lollipop variant of FireOS which isn't half bad once Amazon's excesses are reined in.

Reports suggest FireOS for HDX (4th gen only) can be rooted up through version 5.1.1
I am updated to 5.1.2 on 4th Gen 8.9 and king root still worked

Best guess is the device updated to 5.1.2.1 which is not rootable with Kingroot or any other 'mainstream' method. FireOS does not display the trailing digit but a reasonable guess can be made based on build date. Perhaps you and @chin_bone can compare notes. Unfortunately, knowing what version of FireOS you have won't immediately solve the rooting problem.
At present 5.1.3 and 5.1.4 (deployed to other Amazon devices) also can not be rooted w/Kingroot.

Help updating custom ROM

Hi!
I have a Kindle Fire HDX 7 (Thor).
Some time ago I installed safestrap and flashed a CM 11 ROM in stock slot.
Now I want to update this ROM, but I can't find new ROMs with safestrap support.
Can I unlock bootloader, install TWRP and flash LineageOS?
Can I use this 1click tool? https://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/general/multi-platform-1-click-bootloader-t3241014
Safestrap version: 4.01 (TWRP 2.7.0.1)
ROM, not the last update. https://forum.xda-developers.com/ki...-cm-11-safestrap-20150628-unofficial-t3145547
Thank you for help!

Hey man, I'm in the same exact boat but can't get any of those steps to work, could you explain better what was done as I really need to get off from CM11 and move to something better and supported.

Happy to provide more detailed guidance (several have taken a similar leap) but will be traveling the next few days with limited XDA access. You can find everything you need in the HDX forum (several threads dedicated to the topic) or just hang tight until I return.

Sorry but now I can't remember precisely what I did.
None of the steps works? I remember that the first step (generate the unlock code) was flawless.
If even the first step doesn't work maybe you have adb drivers problem, so check the prerequisites section here https://forum.xda-developers.com/ki...r-firmware-t3463982/post70881555#post70881555
