Soft keys - Slow response - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello !
A couple of weeks ago i managed to put my galaxy s3 in the wash maschine
The good news is that the phone was fully functional after i took it out of the wash maschine (data was not washed away )
The second day the soft keys as also the led behind them stop working. I opened the phone and cleaned the contacts.
After booting the phone the soft keys started to work again (not the led, but i do not care about this).
The problem now, although the buttons seem to work, they do have a really slow response sometimes. For example i notice that i can press like 5 times a second the button (back button for example) and the button response once every second only. I have noticed that this situation is kind of random. For example if i change the led duration of the soft keys or lock and unlock the phone, the buttons do respond completely fine. After i lock and unlock the phone again, the buttons again start to respond once every 1 second. Let me note here something. There is no delay in the action, meaning that i press the button and something happens after 1 second , it means that i can press the button and nothing happens, it accepts the command after 1-2 second key pressing.
First i thought that this is more like a software issue. So i tried following which none of the above seem to fix the issue:
- Reset the phone
- Installed 4.4.4 android port
- Deleted /data
Any suggestions that i could further try (except of installing a new rom again). I am kind of confused as i do not know anymore if this is a hardware or software issue.

Hello and thank you for your reply.
I am aware of this option. Unfortunately i tried this once but i do not like how some apps change (including contacts) as also how the buttons take over so much space of my screen.

It looks like you may have a hardware issue (on the board). Did the phone get wet or damaged in any way?
hey thanks for the reply, the phone just started doing it out the blue HTC has replace the mother board 3 times and the problem still occurs i even removed the power button completely and still no luck!

I know that the hardware starts acting funny if it get wet since the contacts for the buttons can short out. I would get HTC to take another look at it. Also, make sure that you are not damaging the device accidentally by crushing it in your pocket or things of that nature.

HD2 Hardware buttons not working?

I have a bizarre problem with my HD2, which seems to be hardware based ... kind of....
*Sorry if this ends up being really long*
Basically my Volume up and down buttons have stopped working along with the windows button and "back" button.
However, the "home", "call" and "end call" buttons still work, but not properly.
When the phone boots you can briefly see the windows (not HTCSense) volume indicator pop up just before Sense loads, which didnt used to happen.
Once the phone has loaded up only the call, home and end call buttons do anything, they light up the buttons when pressed, and the "home" button does indeed take you "home" and the "end call" button locks the phone and turns off the screen, however, pressing the "call" button doesnt bring up my call list, I have to use a soft key.
I also cannot bring up the hard reset menu, holding the volume keys and booting doesnt do anything, which is why i think its hardware based???
Another interesting problem is that the "up, down, left, right" soft buttons dont work on the keyboard (since this all started)
I had this issue about 6 months ago, I flashed my phone, to no avail .... but about 6 hours after flashing it, it just started working.
The only think I have tweeked on the phone really is installing CHT as I've been booting to Android for the last couple of months, which now I cant do as it hangs after about 5 seconds of booting.
ANY suggestions would be great.
Same problem here I got the phone from craigslist and same problem as above. Can anyone tell as if is hardware or software related problems and if anyone solve this before ?
Any help will be much appreciated.
Sorry I've only just replied, but I ended up having to send mine to HTC, they ended up replacing the main board (apparently). So definately hardware. Sorry bud.

[Q] Disable power button long press = power off ?

Hi,
When doing a long-press on the power button of my Galaxy SII, after a few seconds, it powers off. This happens whether it is locked or not, and without asking for confirmation on the screen.
I'm using a Sena leather case, which presses on the power button. Each time I put it in the case, it powers off, then it restarts, and stays on "enter SIM pin code" screen. I may have discovered a new way to switch to Airplane mode but I'd like to avoid that.
Moreover, there is a distinction between :
- long press (2 seconds) : brings the power menu (Airplane / Reboot / Switch OFF)
- very long press (approx. 8 seconds) : switches the phone OFF
Also, these two keys are active even when the phone is locked.
Here's what I would like to do : disable both the 2 seconds press and the 8-seconds press when the phone is locked
I found some threads about key remapping applications or direct edit of keymap files, but none of them were successful.
Could someone point me out an application / a way to achieve that ? Does someone know if it's ever possible ?
(For now, the only workaround I found is a hardware one : disassemble the phone and sand the power button to reduce its height, so that it stays inside the casing)
Thank you in advance. Kind regards
My old HTC Hero used to do that too, which leads me to believe it is something hard-coded into Android itself. I'd suggest there is nothing much you can do, but wait and see if a dev replies or something.

I don't know if it's possible but if it is it has to be something in the kernel.
The 8 second power off function works the same way as the on on your PC and is used if your phone stops responding so I don't see a way to disable it with an app because it's ment to turn the phone off even if an app freezes your whole phone.
Hi,
If the 8-seconds press is hard-coded, I think precautions should have been taken to avoid unwanted power off each time you put the phone into a leather pouch !
On iPhone f/ex, you have to press both power and home button during several seconds to trigger hard reboot, which makes unwanted action hard to happen unexpectedly.
It's always frustrating to encounter such a basic problems on a $600 phone using the latest state-of-the-art technology, which powers off each time you put it into your pocket ;-)
I hoped some developer has found a way to workaround this. I googled a lot, but I didn't find anything.
So, if the power button features are hard-coded, the only solution may be to hard-remove the entire power button
Problem solved.
I disassembled the phone, I removed the power button, I carefully grinded it to reduce its height, and I put it back into the phone.
(For those who may already owned an iThing, disassembling a Galaxy SII is very easy, it's a matter of seconds with a good old mini-screwdriver; proceed carefully when grinding, because if you reduce the height too much, the buttom may break)
Now my power button height is just below the casing. It's still possible to press on it with a finger, but it does not press by itself when putting the phone into my leather pouch.
Thank you for explaining it I had an issue with my S II and it went to service to solve it, they totally changed the board and was shocked when I found the short press on power button doesn't show the power menu I used to have and it switched off immediately!
I've got to return it to service and your post made me thinking it's a simple issue! It won't take time
Regards,

[Q] Menu button started acting like Home button -- any fix?

My HTC Hero was working fine without incident for quite some time. I did not introduce any software changes to it. But suddenly, for no apparently good reason, I'm seeing two things happening now:
Menu button pressed acts like Home button, no matter what screen you are on (this is terrible, as in some screens the menu button is required to access certain options)
Search button acts like the green call button, bringing up the recent call list and the dial menu.
Volume button decrease goes nowhere. Actually, one click bumps the volume up then down one notch. The increase button is fine. One must click and hold the decrease button to get the volume to go down.
I'm not all that bothered by the volume button, but the menu button is critical.
I searched the Internet extensively and found one other person mention this simultaneous fault of the volume button and menu button. But unfortunately, they weren't able to get a resolution, or they simply never came back to the thread to update.
I did a full shutdown and restart, but no change. The only environmental change has been an increase in humidity. I am by the shore for the weekend. I took my phone kayaking, but it was sealed in a plastic bag and never got wet. But perhaps moisture in the air has something to do with it? It does seem more like a hardware issue than software problem.
Has anyone run into this problem and been able to rectify it?
I discovered another peculiar behavior.
When the phone was idle for some time, I awoke it with the END button, then a screen swipe to get to the main screen. Pressing "Menu" brought up the proper sub menu toolbar. However, going back and pressing it again showed the wrong behavior again (acting like the HOME button).
Then for a stretch of time, if you tapped the menu button lightly and quickly, the sub menu toolbar would appear. A standard button push will cause it to act like the HOME button. But unfortunately, this did not last. I set the phone down, came back later, and this "light tap" would only act like the HOME button.
I did NOT see any erratic behavior prior to this, like the MENU button mostly working fine and only occasionally acting like the HOME button. It was a rather sudden change. Given the behavior, I'm starting to wonder if something has built up inside under the button bezel that is doing this. Perhaps taking it apart and giving it a good cleaning would resolve it?
I've been finding that every once in a while the MENU button function momentarily goes back to normal operation. It's usually after having left the phone untouched for a few hours. But it works just once or twice, then starts behaving like the HOME button. From this behavior, I can't figure out if this is hardware or software related.
Anyway... I don't see anybody having offered a solution for this, either here or on other forums. I guess I'll just have to retire this phone.
I'm really baffled by this very strange behavior.
My Hero is still experiencing this problem most of the time, but sometimes the menu button will work properly. When it does, I can click the button again in the exact same way, and it will stop working right. Other times, I can dismiss the pop-up menu, then click the menu again and it works maybe 2-3 times. Then after that, it's back to the "HOME" button behavior. Once it does it again, I cannot coax it to work properly again, no matter how many different variations I try. I have to wait for a long while before trying again and finding that it works properly again. If it was a hardware problem, the behavior should be pretty random. Given how it behaves, I have to believe this is software. Now... how the software (firmware) could become corrupt like this is beyond me. I'm thinking that maybe restoring the phone back to the original ROM and then rooting it all over again could get things back to normal... anyone reading this agree or disagree?

If needed, KeynrTracker.apk will allow you to identify the code for individual buttons.

Thanks for the suggestion. But somehow, miraculously, the problem resolved on its own. I guess it must be a hardware issue, as I didn't make any software changes. I can press the menu button repeatedly and it works normally now. Really weird. I guess that perhaps there was some debris or residue buildup inside that eventually worked itself out.

[Q] Need help for my SGS3 (latest cyanogenmod on it)

Hello everyone,
I'm a newbie at rooting.
I have used CM for 3 months but for a week it got a little strange.
Scenario 1) When I push the power button to get to lock screen, the soft buttons' light turn on for a moment but no change happens on screen. I push power button again, the same result. No other respone from my mobile. If I push power button for 10 sec to reset, i see a little green or purple light beam from the bottom right. After a while, it disappears. And still no response. I remove the battery as a last resort and put it back, when I push the power button, it's the same. Little colorful light beams...
Scenario 2) A short time ago, while I was playing a game on it, the screen just turned off and I pushed the power button... as you guess, the story goes on the same way.
It's now off, I couldn't get to it in any way.
What can I do to solve and how?
You guess it's urgent.
Sorry for my poor English, thanks in advance.
Can you restart the phone in download mode, or recovery mode?
I just figured out something:
The phone turned on and I disabled developer settings. After this, when the screen is locked and off and I push the power button, I see nothing on the screen (maybe a little purple or green beam at the right bottom) but the soft buttons turn on. I slide right to unlock without seeing anything, I pass the lock screen and it's now open. (when I touch the screen, the soft buttons turn on again and again as it should be) I just scroll the main pages right and left, push the volume or main button, they work. (it beeps when the sound is max) after 30 - 40 seconds... yay! The screen is on! It's totally the same all the time. It needs time to turn on?
Is it a software problem or is my screen about to break down?
Thanks again!!
it's a software problem. You can either factory reset, run the trim command if you're running android 4.3, or change to a different ROM.
