Safestrap removal question - did I screw up? - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I have an Apollo that has never been allowed to upgraded beyond 14.3.1.0, it was rooted, and had Safestrap 3.72 installed, OTA blocked. When I decided to unlock the bootloader, before I uninstalled Safestrap I forgot to delete the ROM slot that I had been running in. I simply uninstalled Safestrap then went on to unlock the bootloader and install a new ROM.
Did I screw up? Did I lose space? It is a 32GB unit, but when I look at storage is says "Your Files" are 9.9GB with "Free" showing as 15.78GB. ES File Explorer shows 9.8GB used, with 25.68GB total space.
So have I lost close to 6GB by not deleting that ROM slot? Can that space be recovered?

The space can be recovered but it will take some work. Options:
- backup up current environment, reinstall custom FireOS 3.1.0 (not stock) , SS 3.7.2 (not 3.7.5), recover space, reverse above steps.
- repartition storage in TWRP. Not for the faint of heart. Dangerous, even with an unlocked bootloader. Make sure you fully understand procedures and associated risks which you would need to research.

Thanks Davey126, I appreciate the help. Rather than doing the repartition manually in TWRP, I think I will go with rollback, and I do still have the SS3.7.2 apk, but before I reinstall the old OS, just to be sure, which custom FireOS 3.1.0 should I flash?

Can't post links from my current location/device. Will respond later with correct references. Be aware there are risks with any rollback. Balance those against potential benefits when deciding a course of action.

You could do what @Davey126 suggested *cough*, or simply delete files from /data/media/safestrap directory (look for *.img files there and delete them)... use ES file expl. maybe with root access enabled if needed, it's simple as that...

Yikes - appears I seriously over complicated a relatively simple task. Must be a sign that I should jump into politics. Thanks, @jeryll for keeping everyone honest. Next time I'll look before playing road warrior expert.
@texmexdud - sorry for the crappy guidance. D'oh!

Thank you @jeryll!!! Much easier! Can I safely delete the remaining safestrap files and folders, perhaps including the whole safestrap folder? It contains the rom-slot1 folder which had only 3 .img files and I deleted all three so it is now empty, but the safestrap folder also has the active_slot placeholder which is only 6 bytes.

Hard to say, I didn't used safestrap in a very long time (I remember deleting .img files, and most probably let safestrap folder be there empty), so for now you should probably leave it - 6 bytes isn't that much.

[Q] System data too large after unroot plz help

Hi-
I was rooted on a Nexus 4 with a custom kernel, and then I flashed the stock kernel/boot.img and updated to android 4.3, which I think caused me to lose root.
I'm running out of storage space for seemingly no reason, so I downloaded diskusage app and there's a section called system data that is taking up 3.8 gigs. From other threads, it seems likely that there's some old backups from clockworkmod or maybe titanium backup somewhere taking up too much space.
The problem is I cannot see any of those folders. I went through all the folders with various file explorers and can't find any old backups to delete. How can I do that? Do I need root access to see them?
I also can't seem to uninstall the SuperSU app. I tried a factory reset but the large system data 3.8gb chunk is still there.
I'm just trying to get back to stock and remove whatever mysterious files are taking up way too much space. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

If your overall goal is to get back to complete stock, I would recommend downloading this factory image for the Nexus 4 and flashing it. Let me know if you still have questions.

Yes, you can flash the Nexus 4 factory image without root I would recommend checking out this guide for a tutorial on how to flash a factory image to your Nexus 4.

[Q] SafeStrap Custom Rom Support

Hi there,
Joined these forums to see if any fellow Safestrap users could help... I installed a custom rom (HyperDrive) onto the stock rom boot option in Safestrap, despite the big red text saying NOT TO INSTALL A CUSTOM ROM ON STOCK ROM.
My problem is: I have 3 different partitions on my phone, each with a different version of hyperdrive. The phone's original capacity is 16gb, but now it has the three different partitions within that 16 gb. I want to unroot and get rid of all these partitions. Anyone know how to help?
How did you create the partitions in the first place? Safestrap makes no sense to me.

When you recover into SafeStrap, there are 8 menus. One of the menus is boot options. You click on boot options and you're given 4 partition portions (depending on the internal storage size of your device). 3 of the choices are custom rom slots, one of the choices is stock rom. If you wipe your stock rom, you're out of luck. You can have a whole bunch of other roms preloaded, but if you remove your stock rom and have no backups, you're finished...
So, the question is, how can I get all 16 gb back and restore my phone completely?
Thanks dude

I believe it operates the same way on the S4 as it did on my Razr. There should be a directory on your internal storage (sdcard0) named SafeStrap; that is where your images are stored for any custom ROM -- each one should be in a directory of it's own (Slot1, Slot2, etc), with each of those directories containing it's own system.img, cache.img and userdata.img files.
I don't believe that Safestrap will let you wipe the stock ROM slot -- hashcode has built a lot of safety features into it!
In order to uninstall Safestrap, even though you uninstall it in your Applications, you may have to use adb. If you aren't interesting in keeping the custom ROMS you have in those slots, you can simply uninstall Safestrap and then delete that Safestrap directory on your internal storage. After that, if you reboot and it still goes into Safestrap recovery before booting the stock image, you'll have to uninstall Safestrap with adb. If you need to use adb to get rid of it, go to HashCode's page -- blog.hash-of-codes.com/2012/12/27/how-to-manually-remove-safestrap-via-adb/ -- where he has full instructions -- it is only about 8 command lines and only takes a couple of minutes.
Sorry I had to post the link like that, but this STUPID board thinks I'm too "new" to post a frigging link to one of it's own developers!

Just getting to this now... school's been busy.
Will post results by the end of the weekend!
You can wipe the primary slot.
I'm running GPE on that slot now.
You can make a backup of your Safestrap compatible rom and I suggest one of your primary slot, and restore the backup to the primary, then delete all the slots.
Test your backups! And remember if you wipe your primary slot Safestrap is gone! You must reinstall it to get the recovery menu again.

Still Not Working
I tried using ADB to remove Safestrap and it didn't work.
I downloaded root browser and noticed that, for some reason, I have 5 gb of storage taken up by something unknown.
My next question is: Where are the files on my internal storage for Safestrap? Can I delete those?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been trying to figure this out for weeks... I just want my normal phone back!

deleting safestrap 3.71?

So I decided I wanted to root my s4 mk2. Did a bunch of research, found out I can only root using saferoot. Alright, got it rooted, great. Found out I can only use safestrap in addition to saferoot. Okay, I didn't have a problem with that. But then I found out I can really only use like hyperdrive as a rom. So I tried downloading it, wouldnt download. Oh well, I decided I would wait until more roms comes out for my verizon s4 mk2 and I only had lie 2.5 gb space left. I looked up the thread to delete safestrap 3.71, which is the one I downloaded. It said to remove via apk file. This is where I got stumped... I only understand that the apk file is what android apps use. But how and where do I access these files? I got file manager, searched apk files, and deleted the one that said safestrap. I deleted the safestrap app afterwards. But my memory was still large. I found out safestrap is based in TWRP. Okay, so I went in my storage in the settings and deleted twrp which took up almost 4 gb. But I rebooted my s4, and it still boots to the safestrap screen. I'm nit sure what I'm missing and stuff. Btw, this was my first attempted root and stuff.

So going into settings>application manager and trying to uninstall Safestrap didn't work?
I'm guessing that you'll have to reinstall Safestrap through a file manager and then uninstalling it properly, but that's just a guess. The dev for Safestrap is here quite often.
What I think you mostly deleted when you jettisoned TWRP is your backup files.

You remove Safestrap like you delete any other application, using the Application Manager (Settings, more, Application manager).
Doing that will allow Safestrap to remove any slots and the recovery image.
Well, with the way you've taken a sledgehammer to your phone, it may require another sledgehammer to recover it.
Try re-installing Safestrap. Once that's done, use it to remove the Safestrap recovery.
Then, use App manager to remove it. Hopefully that'll get the storage back.
If not, flash a no-wipe ROM.

Do you think he'd have to backup the files he might want to save and reformat his internal storage before he flashes the no wipe?
I'm asking only because I've installed Hyperdrive to the stock slot and have not created any other slots. I suspect I'll have to flash a no wipe if I have to return my phone to stock.
Thanks guys! Reinstalling it and then uninstalling the recovery through the app itself helped! I'm not going to unroot it yet, but I'm just gonna wait until I find a rom that works with my build to install a recovery

I can only recommend Hyperdrive because that's the only one I've tried. The longer I play this game, the less I like flashing the ROM du jour. I can't say nothing but good about it.
I've got mine installed in the stock slot with no other slots partitioned. I've got just over 6 gigs left. If it gets tight, I've got a 64 gig SD card to move stuff over to.
Yeah I was definitely willing to try hyperdrive! I was really wanting liquid smooth, until I found out that nothing if available fur ny build lol. I checked out hyperdrive instead, was getting ready to install it, but then I saw it was 1.6 gigs haha. My maximum download speed at my house is like 150 kb/s which is a problem. Plus we're throttled at 475 mb/day... I had to wait to try and download it when I got to my college the next day. For some reason, hyperdrive kept failing for me between 5-10% if the download so I just ditched trying to get it

A bit lost in the rooting process

I have a Nabi 2 and I am fairly new at this. I tried to root using the jmzrootpackage path and was able to install twrp 2.2.2.1. even though installation had some fails and differed from the tutorial. I did not update the product version with OTA updates and it is at version 1.0. Now with twrp installed OTA updates do not work. So, I am trying to go with a fresh start and recover it to stock so I can do OTA updates and re-root. However, I am not sure how to do this. I tried following this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2074501, but this links to the downloads are broken.
Thank you for any help you may offer.
Okay somewhat figured it out
I updated twrp using this guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/nabi-2/general/nabi-information-t3229119 .
Then, luckily I found another user with a Nabi 2 with Disney that was in a similar situation and followed the guide there http://forum.xda-developers.com/nabi-2/help/nabi-2-disney-return-to-stock-dummies-t3212480 .
Now I am updated to 4.4.2 KitKat and it seems I am up to date on the OTAs since it is not showing any new updates available. I also did not install SuperSU when it asked at the end of my stock recovery because it wanted to root my Nabi when I need it to be unrooted for potential OTAs.
I guess I am moving onto figuring out how to remove all the bloatware.
Okay, since I did not install SuperSU I am guessing I did not root it at all. Is there a process to root with SuperSU or do I have to restore with the stock again. I wanted the Nabi 2 to be a pure android tablet as possible, so I deleted as many non-Gapps as possible. I am left with the usual Nabi ones that are not removable without root. So should I live with the Nabi Apps or root it and remove them. Any tradeoffs once rooted?

You don't necessarily need "root". You can delete what you want through TWRP.
You can root by downloading the zip
https://download.chainfire.eu/696/supersu/
Then install the zip in TWRP. There aren't really any bad trade offs to have root, at least as far as losing functionality.
As far as TWRP goes. It actually can handle a lot of the OTA's just not all of them.

I was able to delete some in /data/apps. It was grouped with some Gapps and personally downloaded apps. There were some apk files that I could not find through twrp's file manager. For example, there is a Cinderella ebook apk that I cannot find along with other Nabi apps. I checked /system and only came upon an empty /bin folder. Also, did not see any /vendor folders either. Nothing in addon_res as well.
Thanks aicjofs, your posts have been helpful along the way.

In TWRP look in the mount tab and make sure "addon" is mounted(checked)
Then look under just /addon in the root.
Edit: same applies to "system", make sure it's mounted. That's why those directories are empty.

Thank you, you are the man! They were mostly in /system/priv_apps. However after deleting everything with fuhu attached to it, the parent mode home screen has droid icons for all the deleted nabi apps. They cannot be moved to a trash can.

I was able to clear them by going to Settings>Apps>All>Launcher>Clear Data. Google Play, Google Folder, and Settings were left over, including a small nabi launcher on the bottom. I tried to see if I could get rid of the Parent mode home screen. It seems to be tied to the Launcher system app and requires a root. I deleted a Launcher2.apk before and the system did not fully boot and I had to restore. I also tried to use some App disabler/feezers but Launcher did not show up in either.
Decided to install Nova launcher over it. It is still in the background running, but Nova has automatically replaced it.

Stock ROM for the SM-T380 Rooted, Bloatware free TWRP backup

Since there isn't any Custom ROM for the SM-T380 I made this TWRP back from my tablet, running on stock Oreo took all the bloatware, Knox out to add some root mods, and latest updates with Magisk root. No other personal app added
This is a compressed TWRP backup, not a flashable ZIP!
Download it from here

how to install TWRP
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga.../twrp-3-2-1-1-tab-sm-t380-10-02-2018-t3747564
DOWNLOAD/EXTRACT zip file from above Google Drive's link to your PC
Now REBOOT your tablet into TWRP recovery
connect tablet using USB cable to your PC make sure you have Samsung drivers installed, so you can see your tablet on your PC
ON your Tablet create a backup within TWRP's backup tab on your SD Card storage (choose storage SD card)
browse to that folder and open that SD card's TWRP backup folder, using your PC
go to last folder where you should see some files, delete them then
Copy EXTRACTED files from (Google Drives) into TWRP backups folder on your SD card TWRP/BACKUPS/xxxxxxxx/ from your PC to that SD card.
Where xxxxxxxx is your device serial number;
Once done copying the file
go to, restore's tab within your TWRP
RESTORE everything showing there (all those three partitions)
REBOOT to system
IF you can't see those copied files on your tablet then you have missed something. Restart back into TWRP
Thanks

followed the directions but device wont read the backup file. would you mind posting all the steps you took to do the backup.
I had the same issue, so when the proper backup files are in place on the ext sdcard and reinserted into the device, but the device won't read it -- for me, I had to reboot the device into recovery and THEN it would read it.

if i got android 9 can i do this it?
Is file support with t385??
I want to personally thank you for this TWRP image! I completely hosed my sm-T380 that I just got as a backup tablet while trying to root it.
This did the trick Thank you again!!!
I did this using internal memory and all ok. thanks.
I need to say THANK YOU BRO!!!! You just saved my ass!!
