deleting safestrap 3.71? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

So I decided I wanted to root my s4 mk2. Did a bunch of research, found out I can only root using saferoot. Alright, got it rooted, great. Found out I can only use safestrap in addition to saferoot. Okay, I didn't have a problem with that. But then I found out I can really only use like hyperdrive as a rom. So I tried downloading it, wouldnt download. Oh well, I decided I would wait until more roms comes out for my verizon s4 mk2 and I only had lie 2.5 gb space left. I looked up the thread to delete safestrap 3.71, which is the one I downloaded. It said to remove via apk file. This is where I got stumped... I only understand that the apk file is what android apps use. But how and where do I access these files? I got file manager, searched apk files, and deleted the one that said safestrap. I deleted the safestrap app afterwards. But my memory was still large. I found out safestrap is based in TWRP. Okay, so I went in my storage in the settings and deleted twrp which took up almost 4 gb. But I rebooted my s4, and it still boots to the safestrap screen. I'm nit sure what I'm missing and stuff. Btw, this was my first attempted root and stuff.

So going into settings>application manager and trying to uninstall Safestrap didn't work?
I'm guessing that you'll have to reinstall Safestrap through a file manager and then uninstalling it properly, but that's just a guess. The dev for Safestrap is here quite often.
What I think you mostly deleted when you jettisoned TWRP is your backup files.

You remove Safestrap like you delete any other application, using the Application Manager (Settings, more, Application manager).
Doing that will allow Safestrap to remove any slots and the recovery image.
Well, with the way you've taken a sledgehammer to your phone, it may require another sledgehammer to recover it.
Try re-installing Safestrap. Once that's done, use it to remove the Safestrap recovery.
Then, use App manager to remove it. Hopefully that'll get the storage back.
If not, flash a no-wipe ROM.

Do you think he'd have to backup the files he might want to save and reformat his internal storage before he flashes the no wipe?
I'm asking only because I've installed Hyperdrive to the stock slot and have not created any other slots. I suspect I'll have to flash a no wipe if I have to return my phone to stock.

Thanks guys! Reinstalling it and then uninstalling the recovery through the app itself helped! I'm not going to unroot it yet, but I'm just gonna wait until I find a rom that works with my build to install a recovery

I can only recommend Hyperdrive because that's the only one I've tried. The longer I play this game, the less I like flashing the ROM du jour. I can't say nothing but good about it.
I've got mine installed in the stock slot with no other slots partitioned. I've got just over 6 gigs left. If it gets tight, I've got a 64 gig SD card to move stuff over to.

Yeah I was definitely willing to try hyperdrive! I was really wanting liquid smooth, until I found out that nothing if available fur ny build lol. I checked out hyperdrive instead, was getting ready to install it, but then I saw it was 1.6 gigs haha. My maximum download speed at my house is like 150 kb/s which is a problem. Plus we're throttled at 475 mb/day... I had to wait to try and download it when I got to my college the next day. For some reason, hyperdrive kept failing for me between 5-10% if the download so I just ditched trying to get it

[Q] Safestrap Questions

With Safestrap I know it uses a different folder to install the 2nd OS. Is there any issues with space on the phone doing this? Should we factory reset the good OS before installing the 2nd one? And this also utilizes both cores on the processor correct? Seems like I remember reading somewhere we were only able to use one core because of the locked bootloader. If I do safestrap, is backing up the folder that gets modified enough or do I need to be prepared to RSD if there is a problem since I'm on .211?
Are there any guides that explain Safestrap vs Bootstrap? I've found a couple of smaller posts about this, but nothing going real in depth.
Thanks!
Yes, sometimes there are some issues with space when doing this. No, do not factory reset the first system before installing the second one. The phone would still use both processors, that's only with Kexec only one core is in use. This is a pretty good thread on bootstrap versus safestrap http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/2678-bootstrap-vs-safestrap/
Could you please clarify on "If I do safestrap, is backing up the folder that gets modified enough or do I need to be prepared to RSD if there is a problem since I'm on .211?" generally when you use safestrap, you don't need to use RSD all that much , you have nandroids and 2 systems that it's possible to boot into.

I guess my concern with backing things up was returning to stock if I ever needed to. I don't think I really need to worry about an update or coming out as .211 isn't even officially available to everyone. If an update does come out with updated radios would it even install with the modifications safestrap will make?

Mostly, on safestrap there is no problem going back to stock, as with 2 button presses we can go back to the unsafe system(stock).
No it would not install, but you can bypass this. Since Safestrap uses /preinstall to store backups and the safe/unsafe system, it's modified while safestrap is in use and all you have to do before you install safestrap is copy and paste the /preinstall folder onto your sdcard. Then when there is an OTA, uninstall safestrap and put your original /preinstall back in.

Thanks! Thats kind of what I needed. I figured once I start this going back to stock really won't be an option for me as the benefit of running a custom rom is more appealing. I just wanted to make sure I restore the phone back if I ever need to send it in or decide to trade/replace for a Razr Maxx someday.

deleting rom from safestrap help!

I was able to get HD11 installed and running fine, except wifi didn't work. I selected both the rom and module zip before install, but I was told wifi didn't work because I was supposed to flash the module AFTER the first reboot after HD11 install. I wanted to start over from scratch and deleted rom slot 1, but its still showing very little space left so I don't think I correctly deleted the rom (might of just deleted the rom slot, not the actual rom files). Should I have used the wipe feature? Can anyone please help me with directions on what to do to get SS back to before I created a ROM slot, and HD11 deleted so I can start over, thank you!

If you re-read the OP it states to remove safestrap via the app. Hope that helps.
delete rom slot 1
I have had issues with HD installing in slot 1, I am not sure why but slot 2 or 3 have worked much better for me when installing Hyperdrive. I would suggest trying this and see if it works for you as well.
Hope this helps!
I installed it following the instructions and did not reboot before installing the MJ7 module zip. It works with WIFI for me. I came from ME7.
Did you get this worked out @ickray?

I just got everything set up from scratch, I'm making a backup with titanium backup pro right now, so I can have all my apps easily restored once I get the rom installed. I'm only backing up "system apps" since I heard backing up "system apps + data" can screw alot of things up when installing a rom (correct me if I'm wrong). Once I get the backup of my apps on my ext SD card, I'm going for round two of installing HD11 :good:. Thanks for the help so far, I appreciate it.
Ok. Just wondering.

Storage issues after installing first rom

This was my first time rooting an S4. I installed safestrap and installed Hyperdrive rom. My issue is that my internal storage is completely full. It says that misc files is taking up 15gb of space and it's system memory.

I'm in the same boat. Trying to find out if I can install HyperDrive over the Stock ROM without bricking the phone. I'm hoping that will free up a lot of space as I would need to wipe the slot prior to installing. Just a little worried about doing it.
One thing I did do was boot into Stock and remove all apps, updates, and as much stuff as I could. This didn't have any effect on the loss of space. I know that while digging through posts on these forums I saw a lot of outrage when the S4 first came out about all the bloatware that took up a good 6gigs of space on a stock phone.
Also when I did the backup of the Stock ROM onto the SD card, I made sure that I moved it off the SD Card and onto an external Hard Drive for safe keeping and to free up some space on my SD Card. I also deleted the HyperDrive install as well since it is 1.xGigs of space on the SD card.
Sorry I don't have anything really to contribute, but would be interested in hearing if you find a way to free up some space as well.
I run all of my roms in stock slot because of that very reason. I have a stock rooted backup I keep on my computer so it doesn't accidentally get deleted from SD card and to also save space on my external. I haven't had any problems at all with running any tw based custom roms in the stock slot. Just make sure your base is compatible with the roms you flash. HD15 requires mj7 or mk2 just do like normal and flash the modules after the install and before booting into the rom.
Profit and enjoy the extra space [emoji1][emoji106]

The best way to do this is to Odin to stock, root, install safestrap, copy System/lib/modules folder to ext SD or comp. Back up stock slot in safe strap recovery. Then wipe stock slot and flash hyperdrive 15 and mk2 or mj7 (according to your build) modules. Reboot then replace system/lib/modules with the one you copied from stock and Fix it's permissions.

Something that will save plenty of time would be to backup your slot 1 and wipe your stock slot then restore your hd15 backup of slot 1 and restore it to the stock slot and flash kernel modules for good measure. Delete slot 1.

Your post confuses me. I tried flashing hyperdrive to stock then modules, and i had no wifi. And this is directly from hashcodes safestrap thread
.*DON'T RESTORE A CUSTOM ROM-SLOT BACKUP TO THE STOCK ROM. THIS WILL MOST LIKELY BRICK YOUR PHONE.
The only way I've had it work is the method I posted above.
Have you successful restored a tw custom rom to stock slot or are you just assuming it will work?

Ah. Gotcha. I must have just gotten lucky then haha.
I will omit that so nobody runs into that.
I did restore from slot 1 to stock. But what I did was backup slot 1, wipe everything on stock slot, restore backup to stock slot then flash modules.
Like I said though I must have gotten lucky.
But why would you want to copy the files in the lib folder? Isn't that the same as flashing the modules before booting into the rom?

All I know is that I tried just flashing modules and wifi wouldn't even turn on. When I researched it the solution above is the one I found.
k1mu said:
Here's what you do to recover your Wifi.
First, if you didn't overwrite the stock slot:
1. Boot your stock slot.
2. Copy the two files in /system/lib/modules to your EXTERNAL sdcard.
3. Boot the custom slot.
4. Use your favorite root file manager to mount /system read-write, then copy those files from the external sdcard into /system/lib/modules in your custom slot.
5. Reboot. Wifi should be back.
Second, if you flashed over the stock slot: :crying:
Well, you've written over the factory modules. You'll need to get them back.
A. Find someone with the same device as you that's unmodified and ask them for the contents of /system/lib/modules. Copy them to your /system/lib/modules.
B. Remove Safestrap and install a factory stock ROM. You can now use Safestrap to flash into a different slot and use the directions above.
If you INSIST on flashing over the factory ROM again (i.e. you haven't learned why that's a bad idea), then copy off the files to your external sdcard before you install Safestrap, then go to step 4 above after you finish flashing the custom ROM.
C. Take apart a factory ROM image and extract the contents of the /system/lib/modules directory onto your external sdcard. Go to step 4 above.

Like you said, you were lucky. Because if the module zip were the same, why would one need to get the unmodified one from a stock rom rather than downloading the one from the safestrap thread? I'm guessing the module zip is meant to work on rom slots and not the stock. Idk how yours worked, but to the OP : flashing to stock slot is not recommended by hash and you won't get any support/help from him as he states in his thread, so proceed at your own risk. But the above method has worked for me and others . Good luck.

Yeah. I have the patience to work with it. Plus I been with safestrap since it first came out for the razr so I knew what I was getting into when I unfortunately had to do a warranty claim on my mdk due to a faulty touch screen digitizer.
If I get it screwed up too bad I just start over with Odin.

Flashed HyperDrive RLS15 over the stock ROM this morning. Flashed the Modules before reboot and after install. Only issue I had was TouchWiz Home crashing on occasion, but a kindly soul on here told me it looked like it was an issue associated with restoring data. Although I didn't restore data, I also chose to just flash over the Stock ROM and use the installers Wipe/Factory Reset option instead of wiping the ROM slot first. All I had to do was boot into recovery with SafeStrap and Wipe the new ROM, reboot, and good to go.
Oh, and the free space on the device using the flashed Stock ROM is now close to 6Gigs! Oh the Glory! Gonna give everything a few days and if it all remains good to go, I'll delete the RLS14 ROM and maybe try some other ROM's out, now that I have room.

Safestrap removal question - did I screw up?

I have an Apollo that has never been allowed to upgraded beyond 14.3.1.0, it was rooted, and had Safestrap 3.72 installed, OTA blocked. When I decided to unlock the bootloader, before I uninstalled Safestrap I forgot to delete the ROM slot that I had been running in. I simply uninstalled Safestrap then went on to unlock the bootloader and install a new ROM.
Did I screw up? Did I lose space? It is a 32GB unit, but when I look at storage is says "Your Files" are 9.9GB with "Free" showing as 15.78GB. ES File Explorer shows 9.8GB used, with 25.68GB total space.
So have I lost close to 6GB by not deleting that ROM slot? Can that space be recovered?

The space can be recovered but it will take some work. Options:
- backup up current environment, reinstall custom FireOS 3.1.0 (not stock) , SS 3.7.2 (not 3.7.5), recover space, reverse above steps.
- repartition storage in TWRP. Not for the faint of heart. Dangerous, even with an unlocked bootloader. Make sure you fully understand procedures and associated risks which you would need to research.
Thanks Davey126, I appreciate the help. Rather than doing the repartition manually in TWRP, I think I will go with rollback, and I do still have the SS3.7.2 apk, but before I reinstall the old OS, just to be sure, which custom FireOS 3.1.0 should I flash?

Can't post links from my current location/device. Will respond later with correct references. Be aware there are risks with any rollback. Balance those against potential benefits when deciding a course of action.

You could do what @Davey126 suggested *cough*, or simply delete files from /data/media/safestrap directory (look for *.img files there and delete them)... use ES file expl. maybe with root access enabled if needed, it's simple as that...

Yikes - appears I seriously over complicated a relatively simple task. Must be a sign that I should jump into politics. Thanks, @jeryll for keeping everyone honest. Next time I'll look before playing road warrior expert.
@texmexdud - sorry for the crappy guidance. D'oh!
Thank you @jeryll!!! Much easier! Can I safely delete the remaining safestrap files and folders, perhaps including the whole safestrap folder? It contains the rom-slot1 folder which had only 3 .img files and I deleted all three so it is now empty, but the safestrap folder also has the active_slot placeholder which is only 6 bytes.

Hard to say, I didn't used safestrap in a very long time (I remember deleting .img files, and most probably let safestrap folder be there empty), so for now you should probably leave it - 6 bytes isn't that much.

A bit lost in the rooting process

I have a Nabi 2 and I am fairly new at this. I tried to root using the jmzrootpackage path and was able to install twrp 2.2.2.1. even though installation had some fails and differed from the tutorial. I did not update the product version with OTA updates and it is at version 1.0. Now with twrp installed OTA updates do not work. So, I am trying to go with a fresh start and recover it to stock so I can do OTA updates and re-root. However, I am not sure how to do this. I tried following this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2074501, but this links to the downloads are broken.
Thank you for any help you may offer.
Okay somewhat figured it out
I updated twrp using this guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/nabi-2/general/nabi-information-t3229119 .
Then, luckily I found another user with a Nabi 2 with Disney that was in a similar situation and followed the guide there http://forum.xda-developers.com/nabi-2/help/nabi-2-disney-return-to-stock-dummies-t3212480 .
Now I am updated to 4.4.2 KitKat and it seems I am up to date on the OTAs since it is not showing any new updates available. I also did not install SuperSU when it asked at the end of my stock recovery because it wanted to root my Nabi when I need it to be unrooted for potential OTAs.
I guess I am moving onto figuring out how to remove all the bloatware.
Okay, since I did not install SuperSU I am guessing I did not root it at all. Is there a process to root with SuperSU or do I have to restore with the stock again. I wanted the Nabi 2 to be a pure android tablet as possible, so I deleted as many non-Gapps as possible. I am left with the usual Nabi ones that are not removable without root. So should I live with the Nabi Apps or root it and remove them. Any tradeoffs once rooted?

Okay, since I did not install SuperSU I am guessing I did not root it at all. Is there a process to root with SuperSU or do I have to restore with the stock again. I wanted the Nabi 2 to be a pure android tablet as possible, so I deleted as many non-Gapps as possible. I am left with the usual Nabi ones that are not removable without root. So should I live with the Nabi Apps or root it and remove them. Any tradeoffs once rooted?

You don't necessarily need "root". You can delete what you want through TWRP.
You can root by downloading the zip
https://download.chainfire.eu/696/supersu/
Then install the zip in TWRP. There aren't really any bad trade offs to have root, at least as far as losing functionality.
As far as TWRP goes. It actually can handle a lot of the OTA's just not all of them.

I was able to delete some in /data/apps. It was grouped with some Gapps and personally downloaded apps. There were some apk files that I could not find through twrp's file manager. For example, there is a Cinderella ebook apk that I cannot find along with other Nabi apps. I checked /system and only came upon an empty /bin folder. Also, did not see any /vendor folders either. Nothing in addon_res as well.
Thanks aicjofs, your posts have been helpful along the way.

In TWRP look in the mount tab and make sure "addon" is mounted(checked)
Then look under just /addon in the root.
Edit: same applies to "system", make sure it's mounted. That's why those directories are empty.

Thank you, you are the man! They were mostly in /system/priv_apps. However after deleting everything with fuhu attached to it, the parent mode home screen has droid icons for all the deleted nabi apps. They cannot be moved to a trash can.

There is an app cache you can clear that will probably remove them. I do not know which one though.

I was able to clear them by going to Settings>Apps>All>Launcher>Clear Data. Google Play, Google Folder, and Settings were left over, including a small nabi launcher on the bottom. I tried to see if I could get rid of the Parent mode home screen. It seems to be tied to the Launcher system app and requires a root. I deleted a Launcher2.apk before and the system did not fully boot and I had to restore. I also tried to use some App disabler/feezers but Launcher did not show up in either.
Decided to install Nova launcher over it. It is still in the background running, but Nova has automatically replaced it.
