Samsung Galaxy S5 AU SCL23 Japan version. Help needed to unlock etc - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. I just got a new Samsung Galaxy S5 AU SCL23 Japan version off ebay. It was sold as unlocked but it wont recognize any sims. I am a noob and made a bad purchase. I know nothing about smart phones, rooting and roms etc and I was told this is the place to learn. I tried to root it with an online guide but could not get the menu up.
I wont be happy with rooting alone as even when I set the phone from Japanese to English the interface is still pretty bad with Japanese characters all over the place.
Are there other options to kind of "format" all the old network branding etc off the phone and just run a regular non Japanese biased style Android OS?
Or should I just send it back and hope I get the money back?
Thanks guys.

These models are quite tricky, and I have learned everything from scratch about it thanks to the forums here at XDA. I have my phone working almost perfectly now in NZ, just the GPS & Mobile Data don't play nice together at the same time, 1 or the other, sort of.
Anyway, posted some handy links etc in my discussion over here.
I had to put in place a rom and then hack the frequencies into the phone. This is a laborous task, requires a lot of reading, and double checking. The guide although correct is missing a couple of small details, like how to change the field entries. Click in the left area and press 'spacebar'.

I used the space-x rom, but most likely will be changing this a few times over in the next few months.
Good luck!

[Q] Queries by a First timer with HTC (HD2)

Hey Guys,
I recently got a HTC HD2 as a gift from a friend. I am loving this phone - such a huge screen (I used iPhone 4 recently and it seemed so small then), amazing touch sense and overall experience.
I have been browsing the XDA forums for quite some time. I have few issues/queries that I want to get cleared up:
1. My HTC is locked to T-mobile, USA and I am in Canada. I have been unsuccessful in getting it unlocked. I contacted couple of shops who claimed to unlock it through the code but cudn't get the code. Anybody has any idea why is it hard to get HTC HD2 unlock code? I read somewhere that my IMEI number belongs to the new T-mobile series. Cud that be a problem? What do you guys suggest on getting my phone unlocked? One of the shops told me that they might have to flash the ROM but I don't know what that means....which brings to us to my next question...
2. What does "Flashing the ROM" means? It is about rewiring the ROM? I heard there are custom ROMs. What are custom ROMs? I need to figure out this ROM stuff. I know what is a ROM....I just want to know how this thing and different jargons work wrt Mobile phones.
3. Is there is any benefit of running Andriod (Froyo) on my mobile? I would love to have Andriod since WinMo has forced me to reset the phone more than I have resetted my previous smartphones per year. But, I think Andriod is still in development mode. What are your views on this issue?
I am going to browse the forums more and try to be active here. I hope these queries are a good point to start here.
Thanks in advance.

LMAO! commical how uninformed supposed phone technicians are, , ,no, flashing will have no effect at all on sim lock.
but I don't know what that means....which brings to us to my next question...

think of the windows cd rom, , you put it into a blank computer, and it installs itself, , well a rom is kinda like that. A big file that, when you hard reset (or immediately after a flash) installs itself, complete with all included software, onto your phone. If you flash a new rom, its like using a different windows cd. 'chefs' can 'cook' roms, , get rid of operator added rubbish, add tweaks and programs, etc etc.

Korean version shv-e160l

Hi guys, I think we should have a separate section here so that we could share our experiences with this particular model...I am very sorry if I pissed off any moderators here but since there are no threads regarding this model I felt like I had to do it
I wanna start by telling you that I bought this model for 550$ from Seoul just a week ago and I am very happy. Actually my aim was to get Samsung Galaxy S 3 but I missed it by a week But then saw this phone and said lets give it a try. And guess what , I am more than impressed Anyways after checking couple of forums I saw that official ICS Package was out I upgraded it and then rooted by the help of this forum. Definitely better performance and nice tweaks. But this came with one small issue ; sms problem. when there is an incoming SMS it says "No Caller ID" . Again after little bit googling I found the app called Handcent and it did the trick. Until an international or custom Rom comes out this could be the solution I suppose
One of the biggest differences of the Korean version is you cant go in to the secret menus by typing the secret codes in to the keypad so that caused some trouble while looking for the imei number and trying to change the SMSC ...
Lets share our experiences here so that anyone who has this version can find it here without too much hustle...

This is a bit off topic but..... this link....
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=3569&c=samsung_shv-e160l_galaxy_note_lte
shows it to be basically a ATT type Note....... so other than country specific software quirks........ it is just a 717 note...... I will leave open for now but I think this will not go far, since there are not a lot of Korean Note user to interact with........... If you could please root your phone and provide a sys-dump and kernel and modem extraction would be very helpful to the community....
Thanks Oka1

I already investigated , the blocks dont seem to be the same , the kernel is not the same either , probably needs to be reoriented or somethign and the usr key layout (obviously) needs to be changed . so with a modified updater script and proper kernel by flashing only system it *should work*
Why is this in the development thread? Rom/Mods/Modems only from what I am aware of.

Well oka1 posted on it and is his decision to make if the thread is closed or moved, maybe they will get the system dump so others with the Korean note can benefit from it.

Why don't you just make a bounty thread? If money is involved maybe it might convince a dev to try cooking up a rom and making a custom kernel. It is always nice to get free development but money can motivate people. Put up some money and I am sure others will too and see if you can't get it done. I have seen lots of other threads on your model and I know everyone with your device wants it badly. Its worth a try anyway.
So if I was to unlock my i717 and took it to Korea it would work with their service providers? :s

hi
hi people, i use this korean model as well.
I am new to android (in fact, started 2 months ago) and not a native english speaker. So, i'm having a lot trouble with some technical words u guys use.
The thing is, i'm thinking of rooting my phone. but there arent much forums and threads on this model. I was wondering if the rooting guides here would work on my phone? and there are so many of em (also for i717...) ...
SOOooo, if possible could you quote the rooting guide (or link to thread) which will definitely work on my phone. i cant afford to make my phone obsolete
Help is much appreciated. Thanks
(btw, i'm from Mongolia. heya, fellow earthlings... haha)
Korean devs are at androidpub and matpclub, but not really serious development is there. Few kernel devs like tegrak and mostly cosmetic/porting from International ROM.
Korean note have 32GB/64GB variety, three diffrent carrier (SKT: HSPA+2100 LTE800/1800, KT: HSPA+2100 LTE1800, LGU: CDMArev.B1800 LTE800), hardware button, DMB, carrier specific addon plugins and frameworks, and pink note
and SHV-E160L for LGU, which is CDMA only(like Verizon). Pretty sure ATT note ROMs are not portable.

Why would you even tell him? Better yet...why care? At least he started one thread for a whole model, to discuss all parts. He could be proliferating. Lets be nice here.
When there was no i717 forum, people discussed it in the Int. forum.
The i717R is discussed here...even though the forum is titled "AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717" as it should be.
Be easy on him. This is good for a chat, and it's about as close to the right place as it gets. He was honest about the fact that he knew there was no other place, and he was nice.
And his specific version has LTE and is powered by a snapdragon. So perhaps this truely is as good as it gets on XDA.

It'd be cool if you could post some pictures and do a hardware impressions review.
Thanks for understanding guys. That is the xda spirit that we seek here is the first quadrant standart benchmark that I had.
It is with the latest ICS and rooted firmware. Cant wait to flash a custom rom to this(if there would ever be one)...

hidden menu !!!
I was searching for an answer for my sms problem and I found out an answer for something else. I was not able to enter any secret codes for the system menus before now it turns out that there is a hidden menu placed by the korean network which you can enter by typing 319 712 358 and then when it asks fr the password you type 0821 and Vala! You have access to the system settings now.
Now here is the question I can not make a video call because my LTE/3G server dns is a korean server address. Does anybody know where I could find the network server dns addresses for the Gsm Networks...
i broke my e160s menu and back button by flashing i717 kernel. i was able to flash cwm and i717 roms but orientation and those buttons are not working. flashing back original kernel and firmware didnt restore those buttons. i could get the phone back working without those buttons. but now i have to use another app to trigger those buttons.

Hi , as far as I know you can unbrick or recover your phone from any kind of situation. They have released the tool to do that. I can not post another forum's link here so just check the chinese version xda which is koxda and use google translate. You can find a lot of info there but it is hard to understand because of the translation. So actually that is the main reason I started this thread...
Im Glad man that youve open this threat for us.
i also use this device. Galaxy note shv-e160..UNRAZ how did you fix your sms problem? need it badly?? please
As I have wrote before in one of my posts in this thread I solved this with the free app called Handcent sms where you could download it from the market I can both send and recieve sms with no problem. But one handicap is I cant use any Turkish characters nor can exceed the 160 characters limit. Then you see the failed sending the message error... I am waiting for the update which would hopefully solve all the miseries One of the guys in this forum installed Honeycomb from the Koxda forum and solved the problem like that but I dont like using old firmware while there is an update

My Galaxy Skyrocket is a SGH-T989

I have searched this forum with no luck, so I'm asking for input. I have, and love a Galaxy s2 Skyrocket that was customized and is now a T989. Over the 3 years I've owned it, it has worked flawlessly on T-Mobile 4g. I would like to upgrade the OS. I have also purchased a factory unlock for the phone over a year ago, but never used it. Below is ther content of what I am running. My question is, or should I say are, what phone do I own, and how would you upgrade its operating system? Would you factory unlock it? I don't want a new phone as this one is a perfect size. I do appreciate any help, and if I missed where this was posted on this site, I apologize.

If this is too cpmplicated, I get it. Your time is important but I had to ask as I couldn't figure it out, and I'm pretty techy otherwise.

Just find a rom you like and install. Make sure you update the radio(http://goo.im/devs/Void_Dweller/T769-UVMB1_modem.zip) - that's for JB and newer roms for use with Tmo.

[Q] Help with a Chinese phone...?

Hello
First of all apologies if I am listing this new thread in the wrong place, I am fairly new to the forum!
Secondly, I have read that many people do not much like the Chinese phones, but I was looking for a decent spec, cheap phone for my 13 year old son, so that I would not care too much when he stands on it while playing sports at school, or it get 'misplaced'/lost/stolen by some other 13 year old, or if he simply abuses it to hell and so this iBOLD X-U 4.7" (1280x720) quad core phone just fitted the bill.
So I bought one and out of the box it looks and operates as expected, other than... the dreaded Chinese apps! Most of the apps are English/in English, but it has some in Chinese, one of which I believe is something to do with the rooting of the phone (does "com.mgyun.shua.su" mean anything to anyone?). I am also unable to find a custom ROM for it, or any instructions on how to get round to do this...
The main question is, how do I get to a UK/English only ROM/Software/Setup/Menus & Messages for this phone please, to at least get to Google store only apps? Am I asking too much and is this possible (on a Chinese phone) please? If I can flash it up from the 4.2.2 version it reports to be loaded with, to something like KitKat it would be brilliant!
Apologies for the relative inexperience, I do build normal PC's and write some code, just never not got round to changing anything on an Android phone (or worked with Linux type software!) as yet, so any help/advice welcome!
Many thanks
Assuming you are rooted and have a custom recovery, otherwise this is not possible via recovery.
If that's the case, extract your zip and make sure you install the proper DPI, all that is done automatically if you can flash a zip.
This is 5.0 gapps, KitKat linked in the op.

The Smoug of the S7 930v (?) afterthoughts...

Preface:
Ive spent about a week of full-time work into my S7 930v. I FINALLY rooted the damn thing and I FINALLY, after reading tons of tutorials, read on one of them (right here, in fact) the Doomed Verizon Locking Problem.
Ok, so Im not going to be able to install any android ROMs. I followed the tutorials and I have removed/froze bloatware and installed cleanup apps as per the tutorials (Greenify, Amplify, Titanium Backup, etc.)
I froze damn near everything and my phone still works, so good so far. But it still runs slower and from a security standpoint, I still dont really trust it.
Sorry, I know Im beating a dead horse here.
Down to Business:
I gave up trying to face the impossible. But today, with renewed vigor, I have questions. In an effort not to waste my time, I thought that one of you has probably already tried my next steps or heard of someone who has.
1. Is it also not possible to install linux (Ubuntu?) on my 930v?
2. I heard somewhere that you can call Verizon and have them unlock your phone. I have done so. They gave me the run-around. Switched me to Samsung who told me to call Verizon. Now Im not new to this. Im angry and Ive got too much time on my hands. Im not afraid to call over and over until I get answers. But I thought I would ask you all first.
There seems to be two different versions of what they understand as "unlocked". There is provider unlocked and there is OS/ROM unlocked. So, if I keep harassing them, are they going to ROM unlock my phone? I found this on their website:
verizon..../about/consumer-safety/device-unlocking-policy/
Is my phone really a piece of trash now?? Say it aint so!
[EDIT] I just called Verizon again and explained very thoroughly, that Verizon locks software with a private key and that I wish to reinstall Android as a base without their software.
Tech support tells me that they are not given that information from Corporate.
