Hi, this is my first real thread and I hope this helps or makes someone's day
Apps like Snapchat, Instagram, Kik, among others are behind on material design. Their launch icons are not material. I am not claiming that I have found this, but I'd like to share this.
First, you will need APK Editor Pro, in the Play Store. When you open it, it will say
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
If you have APK with you downloaded, use it. If not use APK from app(system apps can't be used, you'll have to extract the apk or convert to user app or uninstall and reinstall).
Pick the app's icon you are going to change. I chose ROM Toolbox Pro.
When you click it, it will say this..
You'll want to click simple edit.
When you do that, you'll come up with this---
NOW read very carefully there are two ways of replacing the image.
Way 1: Find the HDPI folders.
Android apps have these folders that contain the images of the app. You can find them usually by clicking /RES folder. In ROM Toolbox Pro, the app icon is here.
We got lucky, but in some apps you'll have to replace it multiple times for multiple DPI and HDPI's.
Click the little pencil and box right next to the floppy disk(save) icon and replace the image with absolutely any image you want. I changed it already, but for the sake of this tutorial, I'll change it again.
As you can see I've already downloaded and done some apps, I'll show then at the end.
Once you pick an image,
Hit the save button.
Way Two:
Go to images, find the launcher icon, replace and save.
HINT: the name is usually either: appicon ic_launcher_icon or something along that line.
Hit the save button.
It will come up with this.
Click install and you have your custom/materialized icon!

If anyone wants my APK's just ask and I'll see what I can do.

Nice post but kinda useless as apps are constantly updated so you be doing this a lot.
There is a better solution which is Desktop Visualizer from playstore.
You will only have to do the process once and it's done.

After update it will stay like that.

I get what you're saying, but for me, I want material design icons on stock TouchWiz, and this allows me to do it. Plus, you can change it to absolutely anything, so that's honestly my point. Using this gives us extra freedom and customization to our Android devices.

There is now a paid version of LauncherPro:
http://launcherpro.com/
I have installed it but when I hit the "Home" button I don't get the option to switch to LauncherPro. I didn't have a previous version installed so I thought it would pick it up (I had tried a previous version and deleted it). What do I need to do to get the option to switch to it??
EDIT: Fixed using method in the next post.
From the home screen
Menu -> settings -> applications -> manage applications
From Manage Applications
menu -> filter > All
Scroll to either
LauncherPro or twlauncher which ever is yoru default home screen and select "Clear Defaults" Then press the Home button and you should give you the option of which home screen to use.
That did it.
I had gone to the Applications Manager but didn't select "All" to see the default launcher. Thanks for the help!
home switcher...i use home switcher to switch launchers on the fly free and useful
how do you like it? what's different about it other than that it has new widgets? i use adw and i preferred adw over it because it's way more customizable...just wondering if the new launcherpro plus is customizable.
I haven't used a bunch of different launchers but LauncherPro seems to be very customizable. I have changed all of the default icons and it looks really slick.
As soon as I get the drivers installed on my computer (which might end up being the subject of a whole other thread... grrr!) I will post some screenshots.

+1 I gave up on the drivers and just used Shootme. You need to be rooted, but that takes literally one minute so it's no big deal.
Nah I got the driver thing sorted out. Here is the screenshot (I shrunk it down a little and changed it to a .jpg to save some bandwidth). Don't judge the artistic value of the setup. I just plugged it up and took a screenshot to show what I did with the launcher in a few minutes of playing around.
The background is animated (those little images are flying slowly toward you like a star field kind of deal). I played around with the icons at the bottom just to see if I could change them from the default LauncherPro icons and that's as far as I got today. I don't know what's possible with other launchers but I like this one just fine.

I really really dislike the bluedialer in-call background. It's ugly, and not even rendered correctly, seriously I could have created a better background in photoshop in less than 5 minutes.
With that being said, I have put together a few different styles for the in-call background image. Obviously, the last one is the x2's blur ugliness. They are platform signed and ready to go! This is only for the Droid X2, please do not try on any other phone.

This is a system app replacement. There are instructions below if you are unfamiliar with this process, it's pretty straight forward, and you can't really go wrong.
Let me know which one is your favorite. I'm really curious. I love 4 and 5 the best.
Instructions:
There is a really good guide, here. It spells out exactly how to replace a system app. I suggest using root explorer, it's only a few dollars in the app market, but it's been well worth the money. I always use it. There are also alternatives, I think FileExpert is one that uses root permissions. (Obviously being rooted is essential here!)
The apks attached will need to be renamed to BlurPhone.apk first! Then copy it over to /system/app, once you've done that make sure it's permissions are set as follows (long-press on file if using root explorer):
Then reboot, and you're done. Make a test call to be sure it works. If it doesn't, you did something wrong.
I prefer the green personally

Which one do you like the best?
I have already attached number 4. I will be doing number 3 soon. You can't install. You have to push to system. Use rootexplorer, set correct permissions, then reboot. Working great for me!

Love it! About to install. Where do I push it in system? If you could spell it out, as far as where exactly to put it, and what exact permissions, that would be awesome. I hate the default background...
@mistawolfe Check OP, I updated it with instructions.

Thanks man, worked perfectly. Anyway you can PM me or post the 3rd (blue) one? I would really like that one.
Thanks
They are all posted now. Check OP. Cheers for the Droid x2!
+1 for number 5.
Just givin a bump...installed blue-aurora and its pretty cool!!!
Any chance on updating these (at least #5, anyway) to work with Molton ROM?
So just on replacing system apps in general, if I want to replace the Eclipse Text Messaging app already on my phone with the Handcent app (which is my default sms app and is already on my phone), would I download the apk online? Or is it the apk located in the data/app folder, and I would just rename it, move it over, and adjust permissions?

so the complete app is now garbage because of a simple icon?
please at least give a few actual arguments and tell them how you'd like the icon to look like..
or make your own.

I'm sorry but where did I state that it was garbage? Seems like you're the one needing to give factual arguments, not me.
As for the icon, I think if a developer wants users to use their app instead of countless other apps that do similar things, they should be original and differentiate not sraight up copy something from other apps. In the case of this app, seems like they worked hard on it and I congratulate them, hopefully they will come up with a nice original icon that better fits their app.
I change this icon in the future. I'm not a graphic designer and so far i'm working on more important things...
I do not steal, I found this icon on google

You know something dude, I gonna remove the ads. It makes my app look silly
you can download and install the apk on the attachment, it has no ads and soon I'll publish new version to the play store
Thanks for reporting
I was never able to take a screen shot. Nothing but ads would pop up. As soon as one would appear and I'd close it another popped up. I uninstalled, rebooted and installed again with exactly the same results. The normal screen would be viewable but maybe a second. If certainly like to try this app, but so far out has been impossible. I don't know if it was your implementation of the ads or something with my phone. But as it was it was totally unusable.
I don't mind ads if used unobtrusively and have always paid for apps I find useful. In this case was unable to determine anything about the app. I'll try the version you posted and be happy to review.
Sorry I called the app crap.

OK, I've tried the app and find it useful. I'd like to see a square face added if you're so inclined. BTW I paid for it just now. I'll pm the gmail account of your like.

Thanks for your support!
I just published a new version with few improvements and 5 new frames for plus version
-Moto 360 2015
-Huawei Watch
-LG Watch Urbane
-LG G Watch <-- square
-Samsung Gear Live <-- square
And of course it has no ads
Note: it may take few hours till it appear in play store
Thanks for the extra frames. I use them when I share my faces.
Any news on this app doesn't store the picture after using the save button.
I tried all the available free cryptocurrency/Bitcoin apps on (Android) Wear OS but none provided large images (for use as watch face background/wallpaper). So here goes such complication provider for free.
It's absolutely trivial provider that pulls the weekly cryptocurrency chart from CoinMarketCap (once every hour), resizes it to square (to maintain aspect ratio) and offers it as large image that can be used by compatible watch faces (for example Elements Analog/Digital or my watch face "Just Time").
Currently supported currencies are Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Dash, Ethereum, Litecoin, Monero, Ripple, Zcash. Feel free to request other popular (top 100) crypto currency.

TODO
The image is 168 pixels only so it doesn't look as good as it could on 390 pixels watch screen. I should be able to use vector chart data from LiveCoinWatch to generate pixel sharp chart. If enough people request this, I will work on that.
Custom colors - depends on previous task.
Improve fitting chart data circular mask - again easiest after implementing the first task.

It's a standalone app for Wear OS so it's only visible on the Play Store from your watch. Alternatively it can be installed directly from web (Play Store).

I will include that in the next update. Features like these would require additional shortcut for configuration in launcher which I tried to avoid for the initial super simple version. Maybe later - based on users and demand.
