Personally I'm a bit worried about the phone only having 3GB of RAM. I am a power user and play games pretty often too. I constantly switch from Chrome, Line messenger, whatsapp, facebook, skype, clash of clans, and a few other games. I switch from literally all these apps pretty much every time I pickup my phone to use.
I had the S6 Edge before and the downtime all adds up because of the crappy memory management. Even my Xiao mi 3 with 2gb RAM handles multitasking literally twice as good, but its not good enough for what I do on my phone.
Does anyone out there have a similar habit to me with 3GB/4GB of RAM device that can comment? Would love to hear from the experts here that has similar usage as me!
Is 3GB enough? How much do you have spare after loading all your daily apps?
I don't worry.as Nexus 5X has only 2g ram.
Dont worry about the 3GB RAM it will be sufficient for your needs. And dont based it on SGS6 because RAM management on that phone is veerry aggressive and I actually sold my S6 for MXPE 2015 because of that issue.

I'm not necessarily worried per se but I would have liked for it to have 4GB of RAM only for future proofing.
I'm buying this phone for my dad. Unlike me, he doesn't like to change his phone for at least 2- 3 years, he's been using his Lumia for 3-4 I believe and for someone like that, I think it is worth it to get something that can last a while.
Not worried at all. I'm hesitant to get my wife the 5x because of only having 2gb though.
Too many screen redraws on my xperia devices but far less on a nexus device with 2gb ram. Less bloatware on Nexus devices meaning more free ram.
Lol you guys realize 3gb of ram is a ton...its a freaking phone! Can you remember not so long ago computers had on average 1 to 2gb ram. Now we expect our cellphones to have 4gb... Pretty crazy!

Nope 3gb is more then enough
It's plenty.
Nexus is Pure Android, So no worries at all
The oneplus two I had almost never went more than 2.4gb in usage.
3gb lpddr4 should be plenty.

that was well over ten years a go and technology moves fast
more typos!
More to the point in, 5 years:
N1 512MB LPDDR;
NS 512MB LPDDR;
GN 1GB LPDDR2;
N4 2GB LPDDR2;
N5 2GB LPDDR3;
N6 3GB LPDDR3;
N5X 2GB LPDDR3;
N6P 3GB LPDDR4.
500% increase in RAM and each new LPDDR generation doubles fetch size and transfer speed.
At first I was slightly concerned about the 6p only having 3GB. But after finding out it utilizes LPDDR4 RAM, I'm not too concerned anymore. The extra bandwidth of LPDDR4 will do wonders for the 2560 x 1440 display.
LPDDR4 Specifications: http://www.androidauthority.com/lpddr4-everything-need-know-599759/
I worry all the time.... Just 3gig.... I need like 128gig of ram.... F Google....
Can you recognize my sarcasm over here.... It's a nexus even my nexus5 can multitask better than any phone out there
people, I can play crysis 3 with 4gb on my pc at extreme.
3gb DDR4 is more than enough for a smartphone. look at the iphone (1gb)
i understand where you guys are coming from. I'm worried about 3GB because my xiao mi3 with 2GB has over 1GB available with no apps open. When I start using it, I have apps reloading left right and center because I have everything on the go inc 3 games. But the Xiao Mi3 defo handles it better than the S6 Edge.
LDDR4 doesn't mean it will keep apps open better than DDR3 right? Its just faster.

More RAM will be used up as video RAM for the QHD, yeah. To be honest, as bad as the Samsung phones are for memory, they're not unusable and work ok. When you think of all the crap the 6P won't have running in the background compared to the Sammys, I really think it'll work well.

So, now with 4 cores, 512MB for apps will be enough?
Or maybe ASUS will be more generous and will give us a full 1GB memory for apps, without dalvik ou GPU?
I don't own a asus transformer (old version), I don't know how tegra 3 will work too. So I really don't know.
Anyone have a clue about it?

Interesting question, I heared that multitasking with 512 MB of RAM isn't very good because apps close very soon due the lack of memory.
When Windows 95 shipped, a typical PC had 8MB of RAM, and now this tablet has 125 times that much.
I'm guessing the nature of Android requires less RAM that a desktop OS:

I hope not!

I know a tablet require less memory, they should at least...
But if we got more ram, more complex applications/games can be developed!
We have now some restriction about compress/uncompress files because of the amount of ram free/avaliable at the device.
Let's wait some one put their hands at the tablet and say to us

Every Android device is like this: some RAM is used by the system, some RAM is used by the video frame buffer, and some RAM is used for applications. Every time a new device is released, this forum and others are filled with complaints like "I don't have 1GB RAM!!! ASUS screwed me!!!" The fact is that there IS 1GB of RAM, it's just being actually USED as it's supposed to be. And, if we had only 512MB of RAM, then far less would be available for running applications.
Furthermore, the number of cores has nothing to do with this--it's not like there's a linear relationship where more cores equals the ability to run more apps. Or, that we're somehow going to be crippled vs. a device with a dual-core processor. We'll be able to run the same number of apps as any other 1GB device, only more efficiently and quickly.
It would be nice to have 2GB, of course, but then the device would just be more expensive.
Plus honeycomb and Especially Ice Cream Sandwich do a great job of memory management. You could always root n use some app to freeze some apps/system processes you don't need or use to free up ram. I think using those free ram apps does more harm than good with later dated android OS versions. Of course more RAM would be ideal but 1GB is good enough for the prime. There is nothing or any type of apps or games out now for any tablet that truly demands more of that. People don't need that much multitasking going on to have a million things running in background. All that'll do is burn up the battery..lol

I think if will be the same number of memory modules, don't have any relationship with battery time.
Some websites eat so much ram and processing (bad developed sites), so, I think the navigation will be more smoother if we get more RAM.
Anyway, I'm thinking in buy one too, but, maybe I will wait for a version with 2GB.

You are right about websites. Web browsers n sites can eat up RAM fast as he'll. More tabs open, more ram eaten up. SH!?, my iPad only has 256MB RAM total and I make due with it..lol browser shuts down at times due to too much ram used or too many tabs open. Heavy duty games will eat it up also.

Yep, the Prime has a faster/more advanced memory module or something. Plus several vids showed it multitasking like crazy. Andyx, member here, even showed a vid with his prime loaded with widgets on all home screens and stuff running in background. It still moved fast n smoothly between pages in such. No slowdown at all.
I multitask on first Transformer and had an app restart in the middle of it maybe one time - when sth was clogging the system (a broken game or sth). Browsers can be a problem though, the more memory they have, the happier (faster) they are. Games use a lot of graphic memory, so the more of it, the better (256 for 2D games is more than enough, but for 3D games nothing is enough ).

1GB RAM was not enough for me on original Transformer.
On SGS2, I usually get around 500MB of free RAM and that feels sufficient for me.
But on Original TF, with 730ish visible/350ish free, together with more sophisticated apps, RAM easily runs out... The browser will be killed as soon as leaving it.

I believe I heard Samsung and Lenovo new line of tablets coming out near future will pack 2GB of RAM. I wish at least the memory could be upgraded as easily in tablets as with PC. Imagine packing 6-8GB of RAM into Prime
dont forget, more ram means also more battery drain. Ram sucks quite alot.
Of course more is always better^^ But i think "only" 1gb wont be a bottleneck for the prime.

Yes you heard correct.I posted the link a few threads back. The Lenovo tablet itself will have 2gb of ddr3 ram.Which is a faster ram than the ddr2 ram in the Prime. But I also hear the Lenovo tablet will be a lot thicker (yuck lol).No telling how much ram Samsung will have to put in their 11.6 inch screen (2500x1600) ..that screen is going to be a battery/ram eater lol.
The Lenovo tab is making me doubt getting the Prime as if all the ICS tabs that were made for it feature 2GB RAM then it must mean ICS will benefit from it.
Granted its not as thin as the Prime and wont have a keyboard but prerformace will be better.
As far as the Samsung ICS tab..that will be EXPENSIVE because of the screen, I expect it to be around £599 as currently high res screens that size are in small yields.
I have a HTC Sensation which has "768 MB" of RAM, but a lot of it is used in normal use. I mean a LOT. I normally only have about 100 MB of free RAM. This is how essentially all Android devices are.
Yea, there are going to be some tablets coming out partway through 2012 with 2 GB of RAM, but quite frankly Lenovo products don't do anything for me because they're typically so ugly, and I'm not interested in a Samsung tablet if they put Touchwiz on it.
While I would like 2 GB of RAM, you have to consider that the TF Prime is IMO ushering the beginning of the 2nd generation of Android tablets. No company so far has put such an effort into an Android tablet. Look at the Motorola Droid XyBoard, Motorola's successor to the Xoom. It's absolutely pathetic compared to the TF Prime. Until the TF Prime, every tablet maker so far has been half-assing Android tablets, giving them basically the same specs as always. The TF Prime brings in the true beginning of 2nd gen specs, and it still comes in cheaper than the half-assed XyBoard. Considering that, I'm not surprised that Asus can't make absolutely every spec on the TF Prime amazing. They have to make money on it somehow lol.
I don't think a "super resolution" will be good for us.
Ok, Tegra 3 is X times faster than Tegra 2, but my Xoom got a 1280x800 screen.
Now, 2500x1600? holy ****! too many pixels to handle...
Lenovo? don't have a keyboard.
Samsung? don't like they software modifications...
A asus "prime 2" with 2gb and a faster ddr3? I will got one
Let's wait and see what the future has to offer.
I dont understand why company's are concentrating on processor amount, dual ,quad? ITS RAM that is so important, put 2 gigs in a dual core phone it will fly! any comments by devs on this would really help thank you

RAM isn't overly important in terms of speed. CPU is extremely important. Basically RAM just holds files that will be needed in the immediate future (or have been used very recently) to reduce read times on those files when they are needed. When it comes to actually running code, that is pretty much purely down to CPU speed. 1GB RAM is plenty to store a few apps and the background OS processes. When more is needed, older apps are closed (by "older apps" I mean ones used least recently). Otherwise, recently used apps are kept in RAM for quick switching. Unless you are trying to multitask in dozens of apps simultaneously, 1GB of RAM should be plenty for a phone today.
Both RAM and CPU has equal aspects on any device.
Ever tried playing GTA 4 on a PC with 1GB Ram and Quadcore CPU or on 4GB RAM with a SingleCore CPU...?
Both Ram and Cpu are important in terms of increasing speed.

The way I have always viewed ram is this; no, more ram than needed won't make your device faster, but it sure will make it slower if you don't have enough!

More than 1gb of ram isn't needed. If you are on ics or jb, then you need a good gpu. If you are on froyo or gb, then you need a good CPU since they aren't hw accelerated.

Comparing PC with Android is a lil'bit out of the rails here. Even with one core and enough GPU combined with 4GB RAM should be enough to enjoy many things. More core's is good for multitasking etc. But when you think how many apps etc are optimized for those gazillion cores......

Its simple. Big RAM can hold more running apps or a single big app (more bunch of codes). In any case, there'd be high demand of processing. So, manufacturers can only add more RAM when they ensure that they have enough processing speed for better experience.
You can say, we have quad-core CPUs now, why can't we add more RAM like we do in PCs?
Well, the answer: Don't go for specs. Smartphone CPUs/GPUs aren't powerful like Desktop ones (despite same specs). There's power and heat issues, in fact.
Plus, Android and its apps are unable to use multiple cores with high efficiency (Intel advocates this; that's why it launched powerful smartphone CPU with 1 core). So, quad-core performs poorer than single/double core performance on PCs.
It limits the lifetime of a device since it cannot be upgraded and maybe manufacturers like that. RAM usually seems to be the limiting factor on phones running future versions of android. Its too bad it can't be upgraded like a desktop/laptop but thats the cost of fitting all of this hardware into a tiny phone.

AGREED! MANY DIFFERENT EXPLANATIONS! glad i asked ,all these helped. more ram would help but only to an extent. example if my wifes former htc design had a gig of ram it wouldn't have lagged so much running a single core 1.2 gig processor. FACT,so htc should have done it,it ran great till it attempted to multitask!:good:
Wasn't it stated during the I/O event that JB in general used less RAM and optimized apps better than the previous OS's so phones wouldn't need as much RAM as before?
It would be nice if JB or ICS had a timeout option for apps open more than a certain amount of time and would shut down automatically therein freeing more RAM. Obviously, it could be turned off or off depending on the user. Or if you could specify certain apps to close after an allotted amount of time if unused. Ex. Play store, calculator, calendar, SMS don't always need to stay on the page you left when you switched apps

Of that one gig of ram there is firm ware and the OS and some preloaded apps on the Nexus 7 on your phone it is about the same but with a skinned UI and then the carriers bloatware on top of that. It all takes up ram, so no bloatware or skinned UI gives you more ram on your Nexus 7.:good:

A friend of mine bought At&t Galaxy S3 and it suppose to have 2gb Ram but when i check the phone it show 1.6GB ram and only 1.03gb available. so i guess it is used by system or graphic or something. Just like the computers that doesn't have dedicated graphic card so if your computer has 4gb ram you would have 3gb ram available the rest is reserved for graphic. i am just assuming that the same this is happening to our phone. if i remember correctly when i had CM9 and when i went to setting, about phone it showed only 768mb instead of 1gb.

Yeah, i'm sure your right, its reserved for video and whatnot, but why doesn't the Nexus 7 need that video ram used up? It's got a pretty fast video chip too...
My only gripe with the Note is the 1GB of ram. You only have about 350mb available and as we all know, Android caches stuff you run, but most of the time your not holding many apps in that free 350MB so its always restarting apps anyways. This phone (any ICS phone really) needs 2gb of ram.
I've used the S3 and yeah, its super snappy because so much more stays in all that extra active ram... Samsung saw the light and added extra ram, I hope this is a new trend... How do we get a 2gb chip soldered in place of the 1gb chip

Our phones are deliberately under-clocked to 716, some may say it's for the battery life but I think it's because the higher clock speeds lead to shorter phone life. Using custom kernels, you can clock back up or even overclock. The payment is made mostly in battery life, but if your ROM has a memory leak of even the smallest size, overclocking will open the dam and the phone will suffer for it. Also, the phone will run at a higher temperature, which for sure will end its life much faster than leaving it at 716. This is the way I feel about overclocking: If you get the performance you want, leave it alone.
Wtf??
Clock speeds have not a single thing to do with ram whatsoever
Overclock is for the cpu

Apps are continuously closing and having to be relaunched (slower). Back in the older days of android where apps were 20-30mb it wasn't a huge deal, but some of these new games/apps take up well over 100mb of ram. everything else in the background is closed as it needs to make room..
Would be nice to have more active app space for a much smoother "multitasking" experience.
Sounds like we need a high speed dev to create some software to access the SD card and use it as ram....
Is that even possible ????...Hmmmmmm

Just as the title says, hasn't the Nexus 6 got 3Gb of ram, if so why not the Nexus 9?
I'm guessing it has to do with multiple channels of the memory and the memory controller on the Tegra.
My Nexus 5 with 2GB of RAM has never had any performance problems. However my Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 (just sold it to fund the Nexus 9)with 3GB RAM was ocasionally lagging. The OS optimisation is the key I believe.
You have to understand nexus devices, in all honesty, do not need 3gb of rams. THeir resources are not as demanding as Samsung, LG individuals because they are not optimized. Why I was surprise nexus 6 had 3gb...also, it got a 64bit so in all honesty, it will do just fine with 2gb and may potentially have left overs after you install every app you want to install. SO end of it all, you will have wasted Ram..

Completely agree with you. 3gb is more of a selling point for now. Granted, it will make the Nexus 6 more "future-proof," but that will not matter any time soon. I still cannot consume all of my Nexus 7.2's 2gb of RAM because of the task killer anyway.

Just as the title says, hasn't the Nexus 6 got 3Gb of ram, if so why not the Nexus 9?

Question is why would the average consumer (which represent 99% of potential buyers) need 3 GB of ram?
Does the average consumer will prefer to buy a 100$ cheaper tablet or get 1 additional Gb of ram that they don't really need?
My gf's nexus 5 never lagged with 2gb of ram and my HTC M7 neither even if running Sense UI.
What performance gains are there going to be with stock aosp?
2gb ram ddr3 is absolutely fine!
If 2GB is fine and everything is great. Why does the Nexus 9 have 3GB?

I think that you meant the Nexus 6, and I think that it is just a selling point. Other phones are going to start getting 3gb of ram as well.
Most customers (including some at XDA) only look at specs and numbers. Some like to have it just to say that they have it for bragging rights. 3GB's of ram is the same as overclocking new devices. The question is...what for?
Indeed you don't need more ram for now epically if some amount of the memory is allocated for the gpu.
Edit
I just took a look at the adreno 420 architecture. It seems it will use part of the system memory for some operations. That's why I guess you need more system ram.
If someone could confirm my saying, it would be nice

All SoC use system memory for the GPU.
Hello!
Do You think that the 3GB RAM version of Redmi Note 4 will be sufficient? I's about 1.5 GB left to the user after switching on the phone. In future there will be updates for MIUI or maybe OS to Android 8.
Shall the 3 GB be enough in your opinion or should I be worried and definitely go buy a 4 GB RAM version?
I do plan on getting LineageOS installed on it BTW.
@androidbadboy
Note that the 4GB RAM version has 64GB of memory as opposed to 32GB for the 3GB RAM. If you plan on downloading lots of apps/games, then you should go with the 4GB one. Otherwise 3GB RAM should be enough for your average daily use. Android handles memory quite well nowadays.

Agree with you.
My one is 3GB version.
I've been using it for month. Every time I check the memory status are always show free 1GB~1.3GB...
Switching game to game are never lag. (Clash Royal, candy crush, clash of clans, mobile legend...)
Despite I don't feel any lag at all, I still not feel so satisfied the memory occupied more than 60%.
and this is still very worth to save that USD40.

If 4GB one fits ur budget then u should go for it. U will get a better ram management as well as a roomy internal storage. Tho 30-40 dollars is worth to paid on this gap.

Wont lag but switching between app would almost always resulting in the app reloading, especially chrome. 3gb is the absolute minimum nowadays for better experience.
no,I think they are same

I second that.
I have a 3GB RAM version of Xiaomi and I 'm worried as I monitor RAM usage while launching built in simple apps like camera and gallery as they are eating memory like ice-cream on a hot summer day. I'm not sure how it will respond to new versions of MIUI, Android, roms etc.
Having a phone below 3GB of RAM is a TORTURE! Don't let anyone fool ya that it's not. Maybe if you install a special low-ram custom made rom designed for simple tasks with cut out services or whatever it is that the dev make to actually being able to use the phone with Android 6, 7 or even 8 on board.
BTW there are very low priced phones on the market with 1,5 GB of RAM - that's a suicide! Do not approach these kind of devices!

It's bad idea. You would shake before any upgrade of MIUI, Android, rom etc cause it may lead to slow down your phone to a very irritating degree.
But first, tell me what's the overall price for the 2GB version and what's the overall price for the 3GB version and in both cases tell me the full model name.
Tell me also what will you do with that phone other than calling, sms texting.

Thanks for the advice but can You explain how the 4 GB of RAM vs. 3 GB of RAM makes a better ram management?
4gb just let you have more apps before its killed by android. If you're not multitasking in 10 apps, you wont feel the difference.

If I use 5 apps at the time, standard build in apps like camera, gallery, web-browser, video-player, spotify the 3GB version would satisfy me even If am doing it on a future version of MIUI and Android 8.1?

More than enough. You need 4gb if:
You install all the chat client: fb, wa, bbm, line, telegram, skype.... Then you double them with dual apps.
Or you want to split screen... Gaming while reading multiple tabs of websites while pip-ing video / streaming spotify.
Yeah, its insane....
And when you do above things. 4gb wont help you too... Your processor will lags because of too many process.
For me 4gb is a waste, but it offer +32gb storage which is more matter. You can save more picture, videos.
If you're not saving many data, its better to go 3/32... Remember that the +1gb ram and +32gb might use more power too.
Thanks for all the answers, I get the picture now.
I think there would be a newer better phone out there before I would make use of that 4 GB of RAM.
Would You agree?
There is a note 4 model which has 3Gb Ram and 64Gb storage I think it is Mediatek. Like this one advertised here
Are there any ROMs for it?

I never had a problem with a 1.5GB RAM device :b. My S3 Neo performs blazing fast on Nougat and my Y5 too which is a gig of a device

Seriously? I'd have to see it to believe it.
on stock rom there's no way these can provide good experiance while enjoying phone.
One thing you people don't see is that less ram usage doesn't mean a faster phone. 3gb might be enough for you but I'd recommend the 4gb one as it has 64gb of memory and you wouldn't find much of a lag for a few years atleadt.
IDK how you use your phone or neither care
My 3GB mido performs blazing fast on both MIUI and Pixel Experience. Games run great, Apps load fast, Web browsing is buttery smooth. I use my phone mostly for some gaming, YT videos and work.
