Hello
I am not a newbie user of your forums but it's my first thread. Usually I am a read-only user. I have to congratulate to all the people that makes this site a wonderful place :victory:
I have a question for the Oracle...
I wonder if there's any possibility of modifying partition's table of Desire X by removing the unused (at least for me) 1gb internal SD partition to increase ext partition and so the space for apps
May be I am trying to reinvent the wheel, I don't know...
Thanks in advance

Hello! I've searched all over the internet about this but haven't found any usable information about this. I was thinking about storing music files etc on the ext partition on my SD-card. I've a 8GB sdcard with a 64MB swap, 1024MB FAT32 and rest of the space goes to an ext2 partition. The problem is, how do I acess the ext2 partition in the phone? I know it is placed in /system/sd. But it seems it is only the super-user who has access to this folder. Is it possible to symlink the folder to another place and make it accessible for the user?
Every info I find is about storing apps on the ext-partition, which works. But having 6GB space for apps feels very overkill. FAT32 seems to be quite limited to speed when copying files, and also it have size limit of files.
The easiest and most recommend way to solve your problems is to repartion your card to:
0M swap (no use for swap on hero)
512M ext2 (see below)
rest as FAT (over 7G for your music)
If you plan on having every single one of the apps on the market you can give the ext2 partition 1024MB, no need to give it any more. There are numerous problems that can arise from having larger ext2 partitions, just of the top of my mind if you do have more data on the ext2 partition larger than your FAT free space you can't do a nandroid backup, you'll end up storing too much stuff on the ext partition which is usually wiped on ROM update and replacement, and it is much harder to access these files, as opposed to the FAT partition which is can be mounted as a USB drive to your PC.
Finally note I said ext2, and not ext3/ext4 because Ext3/4 are journaling file systems which are NOT suited for flash devices. They also have much more CPU overhead then ext2. Finally not all ROMs/kernels support ext3/ext4 and for a good reason!
BTW, please post questions in the either the Q&A or general sections. This is the DEVELOPMENT fourm.
Good luck.
Thanks for your reply, and sorry for posting in the wrong forum, which is quite obvious when I see it now!

+1, Yeppers, wow a 6gb ext... That is some serious overkill, why?
Sent from my phone.
I was thinking to use the ext partition as a storage of music etc instead of the fat32 partition. The ext-partition is faster to copy files on, especially if you get a 32gb card and maybe you want to transfer big files. If I remember it right FAT32 table doesn't allow file-sizes more the 4GB, and it is also slower to copy to or from.
Any linux operating system should be able to read the ext partition on your sd card, or a program such as gparted is another thing to look into. Remember you can boot to linux without installing the operating system (boot from CD). Ubuntu or Knoppix is a good one to check out if you're new to it all.
Hehe, I think you did misunderstand my main question. The question is how to read the ext-partition directly from the phone with a file-manager (i.e. Astro File Manager). Not from a computer, from the phone, in the phone.

O in that case you have no chance lol. AFAIK there isn't any program designed for this purpose.

Well it depends where your ROM mounts it. I think most ROMs mount it to /system/sd, so you can use any file explorer with root permissions to browse there (i.e. ES File Explorer).
...while it needs a partitioned SD-card, if mine isn't?
Hey, thanks for stopping by!
I want to try out a lot of the fabulous ROMs available for the HTC Desire, but many of them 'require' a partitioned SD-card.
Although I could just partition it anyway and enjoy the benefits that come with it, I really just want to test some ROMs out for now. Because partitioning (or anything with a certain risk) means, for me, that I have to check a huge number of guides, forum posts and Youtube video's just to make sure I'm not going to screw it all up. (Because there is never a single source that tells the entire story in the detail you actually need )
So the question:
(Concerning devices with little internal memory, like my HTC Desire)
Do these ROMs need a partitioned SD-card to be able fit on my device in the first place? Or is it that after flashing, there is so little internal memory left that the only way I can enjoy new apps is through a partitioned SD-card?
Thanks for reading and I hope some of you can answer my questions!
Hi all,
I was wondering today if it would be possible to resize the internal memory (emmc) of this phone in order to create an ext3 partition (on the emmc, not the SdCard) in order to put some apps there with link2sd ?
I know it's easier to make that on the sdcard but... correct me if i'm wrong but, emmc speed must be better than sdcard (even class10), no?
I thought it would be great to put the "big ones" (mostly games) on an ext3 partition and get benefits from high speed memory like emmc.
And restoring an ext3 partition with apps on it is way more quicker than restore apps with TIBackup, all roms testers know what i'm talking about.
But as i said above, i may be wrong all the way, could someone bring me the light?
Thanks for reading !
Not possible as far as I know. Internal EMMC is already a partition, you can't partition it any further.
What's the point anyway? IMO, link2sd is mostly useful on devices with little internal storage available. The Atrix has plenty...
Hi guys,
I've had my Desire X for some time now and I like it for its small form factor and design. However, I don't like that I constantly get the "Insufficient storage" message when trying to install new apps or update the ones I already have installed. When I go to Settings -> Storage, I have 2.74GB out of 2.90GB occupied in the App Storage and 2.21MB out of 1.10GB occupied in in the Phone Storage. I know App Storage is what counts when instlling new apps. When I used the Disk Usage app to check what's taking up space in the App Storage I saw that the File manager app's data takes up 208MB - what's up with that?
Anyway, I have some ideas how to battle the low storage problem in general:
a) Installing the debranded stock ROM as I now have some bloatware from T-Mobile which is taking up some space. Will this help? How much space will I be able to save this way? Should I choose the deodexed version or the regular one?
b) Installing a custom ROM with an even smaller footprint - is there a custom ROM that can be considered "working", meaning you can get it to perform all the things the stock ROM does without much hassle? I think there's no official build of CM for Desire X - is that bad news? I don't really care about new features and I don't want to spend too much time jumping between ROMs or fixing stuff that doesn't work.
c) Changing the partition table to shrink the Phone Storage partition and enlarge the App Storage partition. As I said almost the whole of my Phone Storage partition is unused. A procedure of doing this with Kindle Fire is described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1388996 . Do you think this would work for Desire X? Has anyone tried it? What are the caveats?
I think the abovementioned solutions are arranged in the order from easiest to hardest and, at the same time, from least to most benefitting in terms of space. Do you agree?
Maybe there's another recommended solution?
Of course I've already moved every app I could from internal storage to phone storage, which did not help much.
I know this is a long post with more than one question - answers to just some of them or even general opinions about the issue will be appreciated as well
thanks,
ledres

I just rooted my Desire X, because of the same issues. I think I might have done something wrong, because the available space does not sum up to 4GB.
I used a partition table app to view the layout, seems there is a 1GB partition not used by anything... in my case it was /dev/block/mmcblk0p31. I dumped it to my pc, and it was all 0x00 bytes.
Can I safely repartition my phone, or will that destroy my bootloader, /boot and/or recovery? What is the best way to do so?
I'm attaching my storage details below. It won't sum up to 4 GB because the ROM size won't be displayed in this menu. I don't know if this is what you looking for.

I also like to repost a reply I made for this question
I am a temp root user. The way I make some free space for me is as follows.
Initially I deleted the bloatware and odex files of selected system apps.
The next thing I did was to select the non movable apps from /data/app and moved it to /system/app.
That way I was able to delete the old version of that app and its odex files from stock and replace it with the new Apk. ( for example facebook and gmail apps). That way some space can be saved for appstorage.
You have to note that every app would not work in /system/app folder. I am searching for the reason for that at the moment. Since I'm a temp root user, its the only choice I've got. But if you are a s-off user you have several other options too. You can refer my following thread for knowing which apps that I've tried to use as system apps are failed.

I would definitely try Link2SD (with Plus for moving the app data - even more free storage). Moved over 1.51 GB to the second partition of the SD card and my /data is half empty. Use MiniTool Partition Editor for formatting and partitioning the SD card.
PS: If you're using Sense ROMs, you need to either:
Format the second partition to FAT
Or flash a kernel with ext2-4 support (like NeXus Kernel v3) and then format the partition to ext2-4 - better performance imo
CM roms already have ext2-4 support, format the partition anway you like.
Hey there!! Maybe you can give me some advice on how I can modify the partition system on this device. The internal storage has 2 partitions, one of 0.98GB and the other of 4.94GB. The problems is only the small one can be used for apps. Is there anyway in which I can increase the size of the small partition?? The device is rooted and I have TWRP installed on it. If you need any new information ask me. Thank you friends.
