Howdy all - so I've spent about a week on these forums - and the interwebs in general - trying to make sense of the rooting / rom scene. I've played with smart phones for quite awhile - including an HTC Incredible & Galaxy S2 for a short period (my only previous exposure to Android) - but never rooted or put custom ROM's on them. I've mostly been an iPhone user - and was always jailbroken.
Much to my disappointment, after picking up my Verizon Galaxy S4 (I traded someone from my iPhone 5) - I discovered all the bloatware - among other things - and want to put a custom rom on it.
I do have 4.3 on MJ7. My understanding is the previous owner of this device had the phone for about 2 week.
So - what are my options? I am a bit confused with all the different concepts & terms.
I understand MJ7 is pretty locked - but have been paying attention to the vRoot method.
If I WERE to use it - and root my phone - what would be my next step?
Do I then have to install a recovery loader or is that still not an option?
My "goal" is to have a leaner more efficient OS running so that things move faster and battery drain is kept to a minimum.
If I understand things - if I do root - I would need to use a 4.3 ROM, correct? Or no? Could I use a 4.2 ROM?
I still don't understand where "safestrap" and whether a ROM has TouchWiz fits into things.
I've read about this Knox 0x1 stuff too - but I'm not worried about warranty issues - that's the only real concern, right?
I know once I'm rooted - I can run things like nandroid backup - right? Among other things?
But my big issue is - I want a stable custom ROM that doesn't have all the bloatware & that works well.
Can I do this now - if I used the vRoot method (I know some are still iffy about it & I understand those concerns)?
I apologize to those of you who "know" this stuff. I really have been searching and reading up - but I have to be honest - my head is spinning with "what is what".
I understand the "potential" of Android over iOS - and appreciate/respect the complexities that come with it - but I am disappointed that things seem to be even more "locked down" and unreliable this far into the game for Android (I dumped my HTC Incredible & S2 because of far inferior performance, battery & reliability issues compared to iOS). I'm sure much of the blame lies with Verizon and/or Samsung as opposed to the actual OS, but, it is what it is.
Not looking to debate my experience or opinion; just looking for a little more guidance for a few things I'm struggling to comprehend.
I just want to have something that works- and works well.
I've been in & out of these forums over the years for different things and know it's a great resource. Thanks ahead of time for anyone that chooses to take the time to point me in the right direction(s).

As of now your ONLY option for MJ7 is root via VRoot.(Make sure you read the ENTIRE VRoot thread) That's it. No custom recovery, no ROMs, no Safestrap.
I know, there are huge lists of roms that are available for the Xperia Neo, but I have a long list of requirements and thought that you might be able to help me out with something that I would probably need multiple weeks for.
General information:
The exact name for my smartphone is 'Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V'.
I don't have any warranty on my phone anymore. (I got it on xmas in 2011 and I had 24 month warranty.)
I rooted it in 2012 (april approximately)
I lost the backup between millions of files on my old computer. (It still exists though.)
I can't remember what I used to root it, but it was rediculously simple.
I installed an Anit-Theft app on it in 2011. 'Avast Internet Security & Antirirus' and I remember it sayin something like it will hide itself as system app and protect itself etc. I'm not sure if I remember the password...
What I expect from the custom rom:
It must support all the components (including HDMI, USB, WIFI, GPS, 3G, cams...).
It should be as small as possible (on disc and RAM)
but there shouldn't be any critical or extremely annoying bugs.
low CPU usage
control over the CPU clock (to get more battery time)
I only want necessary software to be installed on the device by default. (atm there are about 100 apks that are clearly not necessary)
I hope I didn't forget anything.
The reasons:
I want more battery time. (Yes I already turned my screen darker, bought a bigger battery and closed background processes)
I hate it to have a mess on my device.
I hate it to have no control over it.
I need more internal discspace. (Thanks to bad developers like WhasApp's and the 100 unnecessary preinstalled system apks. I think I don't even have 200MB available on my internal storage.)
Lesser lag and responding times (especially for the keyboard)
Best regards and thanks in advance,
ferivon
here is the list of roms & kernels http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1316394 have lots of different kind roms & kernels select one accordingly which suites your need .. one thing there is no best rom or kernel out there , try all select the one enjoy full freedom .. welcome to xda

No rom is fast or best. It depends on users choice. Try each rom and see whats best for you. Dont create such threads in future. Its baseless

I did not ask for the best rom. Read the whole post before answering in future.
Btw: When I registered here, a message showed up, implying that it is okay to ask for roms with specific features as long as you don't ask for it in a dev section.
However, enough offtopic, I asked for the rom that would fit my needs the best.
I hope you don't seriously want me to test every rom that is compatible with my phone. Not sure if you knew it, but there are humans that have a 'real life'. I can't just put a new rom on my device and test it for 10 minutes to see if it fits my needs. It takes a lot of time to see if the rom is stable bug-free etc. And now imagine I would do this for like 50 roms. It would take me years...
It doesn't necessarely need to be the one that fits my needs 'the best'.
I just thought that someone here has some experience with most roms and that you could at least give me a smaller list of possible roms.
Or maybe you just happened to know one specific rom that is very good and fitting my needs?
I read a message or something like that when I registered here. And it implied that it is okay to ask for roms with specific features as long as you don't ask for it in a dev section.
best regards,

You better try latest updated ROMs use recommended kernel mentioned in rom thread, no further discussions

Let me clear up somethings... You need hdmi so you will have to stick to ics or gb... And in general all roms try to provide you the best experience... By having an unlocked boatloader you can install a custom kernel and thus getting control on processor... All roms generally aren't bloated... So I would say any stock based rom ll suit you...

You don't have to test every ROM anyways and
DO not refer "the life" here...respect the developers, they do have their lives even after making these ROMS for You....
If you are intelligent enough to read the general and development threads.... and know the ROM bases(AOSP,cyno,PACMAN,etc) from good developers....I can bet you ...you will find a ROM good or even best in less testing...because many ROMS on ICS based are premium icing on the cake...
do check the rating on the right side of the thread
Ok, thank you all.
Try different roms before deciding what is best
For me carbon rom works good for 4.4.2. Waiting for update to 4.4.3
Hello and you may know my from .... I highly doubt that but I'm a new Dev on the s5 seen or block who rose from noob to novice to dev.
I see that a lot of times people miss a lot of things that they like from a ROM whether its a comprise or feature that changes.
My only promise that I can keep to you is that as long as our device thrives and I still have my phone I'll keep things simple and have no comprises just results these are the roms made by the people and here they are all are rooted and packaged with features. Even though im not as talented as a few who left us aka @The Sickness I believe one could always try to move out of the singularity.
Thereby here are my Roms
Maverick 5.1.1 Improved Edition V2(deodex)
2 Version Maverick Mach 10 Final Aroma (debloated and deodex) *Update Andriod M 7/11
NOW let me ask you what is it you seek young ones.
So im ready and always answer back like in around 30mins
Also if anyone ask battery drains on my rom could be 0.5 to 3.0 on standby which is really lol like take it off at charger at 9 come back then and see it only decreased from 100 to 98 or 97
You're a power user. Can the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge keep up? Rate this thread to express how "healthy" the development scene is for the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. A higher rating indicates available root methods, kernels, and custom ROMs.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
It's a bit too early for this IMO.
While its still took early since most people still havnt gotten their devices and devs usually don't have the money to throw at upgrading phones right when they come out, I hope that we will have a few solid devs here and create amazing ROMs. Not to mention the cm and aosp support we should see with the 820 varient.
Isn't the bootloader locked on all USA carriers? I know my Verizon one is. We'll be lucky to even get root.
Do you think we'll get xtrestolite for the s7?
Locked bootloader.
Samsung is starting to think they're Apple.
I feel like I'm wishing for the impossible to get root within 6 months on Verizon's S7e.
Personally I just bought the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge G935F (International Unlocked) version. I'm hoping development of roms picks up soon but until then at least I have root and the ability to make changes.
There are some great roms out for the g935F imo. Renovate and kryxxos both have very active forums and are making good progress. I'd say the development for the European variant has a pretty solid community so early on
I am happy to use it as is from factory. No need for root or roms here.

There is always a need for root. Removal of bloatware, ability to link apps2SD, etc. It may be (and is) incredibly functional at stock state, but I'm dying for root access.

Coming from a Nexus 6 used with stock/unrooted. i don't know why if it is a lollipop or marshmallow thing but rooted devices don't run as stable as they used to run like they did until kitkat. S7 Edge provides everything i need out of the package, i can disable whatever bloatware i don't need. So, i don't really see myself rooting for the sake of having root. :good:

Samsung slow in updates, they still haven't updated MM to S6 , just started in some countries. But, I think they will do the same with Android N to S7, So if you want to taste early Android N, you need to have CM.
Too early for this thread me thinks
Takes time for devs to bring us great things
In the meantime though I've been able to make quite a killer rom myself based on the latest G935FXXU1APCI TUR release and modded in xposed, root, removed knox and added in wifi-calling that I can use on UK EE
So... are owners of the Snapdragon version voting and commenting in this thread? If yes, that won't really be fair since the SD version is locked down.

I agree with you MorningStarGG. I hope that company will think about it.
Thanks.
Tripping Knox is something I want to stay away from.
If that got your attention then I need your help. If you have a USA NOTE 8 then you currently have limited ROM options. Some will tell you it can't be done, but there is already a solid rom for the S8+ (which also has a locked bootloader).
Basically if you have a TMOBILE, ATT, VERIZON, SPRINT or other US note we can get a sick rom made for US. Free of charge.
What's the catch?
The Dev willing to make this rom needs to know that a few of us (not just me) want and need this rom.
Please just reply to this thread if you own a Note 8 and want a deodexed, Knox removed, sped up, debloated and prerooted rom.
Thanks guys!!!

Aosp with spen functionally. Lol
Should most likely post this in the US carrier forums.
Or maybe the ROM/Development thread?
Honestly, I'm not sure where you would place a post demanding a ROM Developer make a ROM.
More is better!
A sick rom would be great, I miss my Note 1 and all of the rom options I had......

Absolutely not. SPay will NOT work on a rooted device or a custom ROM.

Would this include an attached Gear S3? I don't know why anyone would give up MST functionality and why Samsung is singing it to the moon. It is a real game changer.

You initiate it on the watch and it sets up through the phone, so if you can't even launch it on the phone that would answer the question and mean it doesn't work.
I would be more enamored by the MST upgrade from the Gear S2, but I have had pay since the S6. If I didn't have a phone with MST I would for sure be buying an S3. I run unlocked ROM and tethering and caller ID are enabled. I don't know what else I get with it, but tethering is usually $10 a month.

If it requires SPay on the phone, then no it won't work. I use SPay all the time, so root and custom ROMs don't interest me too many options available to customise and disable bloatware without root now anyway.
Not Demanding...
I approached a Dev who is capable and maybe willing to make us a rom.
I didn't "Demand" nor should anyone else. (People like to be appreciated, not harassed / bossed around, see Psychology 101)
We MAY get a Rom, it is very likely, but said Dev (who can chime in whenever they like, otherwise will remain anon for now) wants to have:
1.) Interest. Dev doesn't own a Note 8, will be doing this not for his own use. He wants to know that at least 5 or 10 of us will be able to benefit from his time and effort.
2.) Testers. The rom will (hopefully) be based on the U1 Unlocked firmware. Testers with any US model N8 (or Canadian I suppose) can benefit, but we need people from
all carriers willing to flash beta software to their phones, not whine if it doesnt work right away, and give intelligent, meaningful feedback.
3.) Time. This will be a gift / sideproject for the dev. It may take a while. We gotta get people interested, help test, and BE PATIENT!
If you want to be part of this groundbreaking process just keep on keeping on!
EDIT: This rom will most likely have native Tethering built in... no bloat, knox removed, prerooted, deodexed etc
I would love a Rom and be willing to test also!

Shouldn't this be in the ROM/Development section?
Probably! I guess i'll move it lol
This is not a joke?
All of XDA's users of Note 8 (950U too) want of any rom, except official.
This is Not a joke. S8 / S8+ US model has almost the same setup as us, and also the same ****** locked bootloader.
There is a rom (are roms?) for it, and its badass.
I was amazed it wasnt available for the Note 8 US, so I asked and there just hadnt been any interested people asking someone who could handle it.
The guy who has the best chance of making it doesnt OWN a N8 so without someone asking him, it just wasnt on the old todo list.
I'm sure said Dev will get on here at some point as we get more people posting and clarify what he Can/Will/Will try to do. This is in no way guaranteed, but I would bet we have a rom sooner rather than later if we get enough people involved.
The thread will remain here while we gather testers and get a core of people interested.
When Dev decides to post a Link to something we can Download and test, He can start a Dev/Rom thread for that purpose. Keeps the site nice and tidy.
I'm willing to be a tester. Would love to have a new rom on my Sprint Note 8
