Yesterday I tried to root my Samsung Galaxy S2 with the help of this video: How to Root Galaxy S2 GT-i9100 Jelly Bean Android 4.1.1/4.1.2! on youtube ( since I'm new to this forum I'm not allowed to use outside links in my thread ).
It told me to go to Downloading mode by pressing the Home-, Power-, and the volume down buttons .
Then I downloaded Odin3 and a jeboo kernel just as said in the video, I did so on the 1st link in the video's description ( again can't use the link but it is the first link in the video that I mentioned before ) .
On this website I scrolled down a little a found the two links for downloading Jeboo Kernel and Odin3.
So I started Odin3 and connected my phone to the PC, that one space on Odin3 went yellow so it seemed to be connected to my phone.
But there was no PDA button as mentioned in the video so I downloaded the version he used in his video (Odin3 v1.85)
opened the file, connected it to my phone (the bar went yellow) and clicked on PDA .
Then I chose the Jeboo Kernel file as said in the video, the two bars went green just as it should and I clicked on START.
The next thing happened was that my phone started, but without a yellow triangle as it should and stopped at this screen like this : ( deleted link of an photo of the start up ) . I couldn't do anything to stop it so I was waiting for it to shut down by it self .
So my questions are: What did I wrong? How can I remove the Jeboo Kernel from my phone and get the normal kernel back? Or If possible how do I root it properly? Is my phone bricked?
Sorry for not that great english!
Btw I had Jelly bean 4.12.
And I'm a noob in things like phones and stuff so please try to explained it in easily understandable words Ty
Hi @Lokeen
So it stuck on "Samsung Galaxy i9100" screen? If yes -
1. Take the battery out and back in after a few seconds.
2. Hold volume up, home button and power button together until you see start up screen and let go all three
3. It should boot into recovery mode. What recovery version do you see(if any)?
If you can get to download mode go there then connect to pc with good usb cable (like samsung which you get with your phone) and flash this kernel again. Btw in newer versions of odin pda is pa now. I rooted my phone using this method and everything went quite smooth. If you want to go back from root and this kernel go to samware.com (something like that) download right version for you country and flash it with pda/pa (ofc it is good to clean phone before it)
That's how I would try to do this.

After a few seconds of clicking home-, power- and volume up buttons the screen turns black until I stop, then it goes back to the Samsung galaxy S2 screen. Also I'm not sure about the file I flashed on my phone even was a kernel.
I just chose the winrar file I downloaded. @noppy22

From phone completely off, try the three button combo until you see the samsung s2 screen then let go. What happens? If that doesn't go to recovery mode, try taking the battery out to turn the phone off, put battery back in, then hold volume DOWN, home, and power buttons. Does this give you download mode?(It will say "downloading now, do not turn off target", or something similar)

Nothing happend after the first three button combo, then took the battery out, put it in and tried the other combo .
In both cases it remained at blackscreen. @noppy22

@keithross39
Hi I'm back, I finally got my Samsung Jig and it really get's me into download mode .
I don't know what to do from here on, could you please give me an step to step instruction on what to do now ?
Thanks :good:
Ok....so you need to go to either sammobile dot com Or samsung updates dot com (we're not allowed to post links to those sites on XDA) and download the correct firmware for your device/region/carrier. Then you need to download Odin for your pc/laptop.
1) put phone into download mode.
2) open odin.
3) connect phone to pc/laptop via usb cable.
4) wait for phone to be recognised by odin.
5) load firmware into odin and flash to phone.
Instructions on how to do this can be found on the firmware download page or anywhere on XDA......
http://i.imgur.com/rVnFwJM.jpg
Thanks, I wanna be sure that I don't do any mistakes so I have a question: I downloaded this version http://www.sammobiledotcom/firmwares/download/5879/I9100GXXLPY_I9100GDBTLP3_DBT/
(I replaced . with dot ) and the file is called: I9100GXXLPY_I9100GDBTLP3.zip , is this the right file to flash ?
@keithross39
@Lokeen do you have the 'G' variant of the device?
It would appear that the linked firmware is for that variant.....
http://i.imgur.com/rVnFwJM.jpg
@keithross39
Yes I got the G variant.
I got Odin3 v3.10.7, how do I choose the file ( I mean through BL, AP, CP or CSC )?
Do I choose the file I downloaded or do I need to unzip it first?
You need to unzip it once I think until you see a tar md5 file.
As for flashing the firmware.....
I *think* you select AP to load it into odin....I don't know for sure as it's been a while since I used odin.
There should have been flashing instructions on the firmware download page........
http://i.imgur.com/rVnFwJM.jpg
So shall I choose only the .tar.md5 file or combined with the other one ? @keithross39
So, you've unzipped the download, what files do you see on your pc/laptop screen?

and SS_DL.dll .
A dll file has normally got something to do with Windows. ....
I'd leave it alone (just in case windows needs to access it) and concentrate on the tar md5 file.....that one is all that Odin needs......

I am getting the exact same screen...cant get it to recovery or download mode.
its not bricked, I had this many times while pulling the usb or battery while in odin. Plug in the usb and press and hold vol up and down and power. When the screen goes black let go of power while continuing to hold vol up and down. Should bring you back to download mode
I was able to get it into download mode and flash the rom. Thanks

How'd you get it to flash? I got that same screen but in ODIN it just sits at cache.rfs... nothing good happening after that. It is basically frozen.

OMG I finally got it. I had to leave ODIN open after it stuck at file analysis. I then took out the battery of the phone and put it back into download mode. I click start in ODIN and thankfully... she's flashing back to stock 2.1. I had tried a million different ways... ODIN is not exceptionally stable. No bueno. I think I'm going to keep the stock Kernal cause this was scary... lol.

I had the same problem.
What you have to do is run Odin with the usb connected to the phone, then you unplug and plug the usb back in, hold the vol - and + with the power button at the same time, once the screen goes black, release the power button, but keep holding the vol - and + buttons and Odin will recognize your phone. then the phone will be at the downloading screen
That's how it worked for me.
What did you do to get your phone in this state? Try to root ??

Yup. The key part is to leave ODIN open.

Only suggestion I can give is to keep trying, that's how I got my phone out of that dreaded state in the OP's pic.
Man I'm in the same boat. I tried the key combination many times before this. I was flashed bionix 1.2 w/OC and was using ROM Manager to revert back to my previous ROM which was stock and when it was done it rebooted and would stay stuck with the Samsung Vibrant screen. I ended upsing ADB to get it into download mode and the other modes but I tried to use ODIN to restore after it was in download mode and it just seemed stuck. How long does it take to usually load the kernel? Well it was taking so long so I just pulled the USB plug. After I did this I got that cellphone and computer icon. I've tried many times to get it into download mode or restore mode many times with the volume button and power button and haven't had any luck at all. I'll keep trying. I hope this really works.
I have tried every combo mentioned and a few others along with every button combination, I read it has to do with what rom you were using before the phone -> computer icon. I came from bionix 1.3, I would love any help to get this thing fixed before my wife finds out...
This happened to me earlier today instead pull the battery out and usb then put the battery back in open odin attatch the usb to the computer and then hold down volume up and volume down while plugging the usb to the phone finally and it worked might take a few tries and if odin doesn't recognize the phone unplug the usb and plug it back in if it's already in dl mode
if ur device is hardware locked, ur as well as bricked at this point, i cant get mine out
An easier way to get to download mode that I have been using. Have Odin open. Turn off the phone. Hold volume up and plug in the USB. Goes straight into download mode for me every time. Not sure if this will work with the hardware locked phones (I don't have a hardware locked phone - got it on launch day).

Old thread, I know. Just my 2 cents. I only found this to be true of Odin v1.0 since v1.3 seems quite stable.
If your using odin and it hangs during flashing never pull the usb always pull the battery out first then the cable the phone will stay on when you pull the batterycuz the usb is giving it power but once the usb is pulled the phone is off and you won't be stuck with the dreaded phone ! Computer screen.

Hey guys. Unfortunately, I am stuck on getting my Vibrant up and running. I've never had this issue until now. I am familiar with ODIN and all that is needed to restore back to stock. Everything has always gone smooth until this point. I was ODIN'ING back to stock, as usual, from a 2.2 ROM. I started the ODIN operation but then after 1 second or so, it showed that it failed. Then I unplugged it, like usual whenever it fails, and plugged it back in. And for some reason it couldn't read it. I've tried on two different computers already and it can't be read at all. Here's a picture that I found on a thread....BUT, instead of the phone and computer Icons being in the MIDDLE like normal, its on the TOP LEFT for some reason. I have no idea what is there to do now. Usually I am one to figure things out but I stumped right now. Please if there's any help I would really appreciate it! Am I gonna have to buy one of those JIGGS?

did you change your bootloader?
just keep trying with odin

Okay here is what you meed to do.
1. Take battery out of phone.
2. With battery still out, connect USB to CPU and put it in Vibrant
3. With battery still out, hold the two volume buttons.
4. With USB in amd fingers on both volume keys, put battery in.
5. Enjoy download mode.
Nope I wasn't messing with any bootloaders. I was just reverting back to stock.
Hmmm well my computers can't seem to read it at all :/. It doesn't seem like that will work....

1. Start Odin
2. Plug USB cable into pc
3. Power off the Phone.
3. Pull the Battery.
5. Plug USB cable into Phone.
6. Press and Hold: Volume UP + Volume DOWN + Power, all at the same time.
7. Re-insert the battery.
8. The phone will power now, when the screen starts a cycle of going to a BLACK screen, release ONLY the POWER button.
9. When you see the download icon release the volume buttons,
10. Odin back to stock by putting the PIT file into the appropriate area and the .tar in the PDA area
try it the other way, mine doesnt do it like the poster above said
open odin
plug usb into pc

I had this problem before. What you need to do is, set Odin up with the 512 pit and JDF tar files. After that plug the usb cord into the computer but not the phone. Then pull the battery on the phone and wait about 10 to 15 seconds then,put it back in and push the power button. Hold the power button in until the phone to PC symbol pops up for the second time. As soon as it does plug the USB into the phone. A yellow com port should show up at this point. Your phone will still show the phone to PC symbol. This is normal. You can Odin back to stock,from that screen. Good luck. This always works for me.
Just had exactly the same problem with the Phone -> PC symbol in the top left screen. This happened after a segmentation fault in Heimdall during a bootloader flash, after which I removed the USB cable whilst in Download Mode. This was necessitated since Heimdall maintained that "Failed to detect compatible device".
I then pulled out my WinXP netbook in desperation to try Odin, but no joy, no device found.
I have a GB bootloader with Download mode remapped to VolumeTop + Power; so this is what got me into the good ol' yellow Download mode:
1) Plug OUT the USB
2) Turn on the device/ Possibly hold in until Phone -> PC pops up for a second time
3) Hold VolumeTop+Power in for 7+ seconds
4) Good Download mode should pop up
5) Attach USB cable, then the device should be seen.
Since you seem to have a Froyo Bootloader, you should do the VolumeTop+VolumeBottom+USB attach move.
It seems that if you persist and try different combinations of cable connects/restarts/button holds that it's going to budge eventually.
Let us know how it goes.

then it reboots. over and over constantly... I would love just to go back to stock software even.... Just have no idea what to do!
I used the AIO Vibrant Toolbox and used the rom file for Version 10.
I looked at the SD card in a card reader and i see no ROM File at all... so i copied
ICS_NBv10.zip to the root of the SD Card and renamed it ROM.ZIP... and that didnt do anything. also tried VIBRANT_ICS_Passion_boot.zip but to no avail. I admit that im a stupid noob.....
Please help this dumb noob.
Pull the battery and use the three button combo to go to recovery, should be fine.
Ok I pulled the battery and held down volume down, power and the home key, does pretty much same thing, ive tried it many times and once and awhile id get a spinning wheel icon? which would come up, then go to a black screen then come up, basically in a loop, if i let go of the keys, it ends up going to the error message i posted and ends up in that loop again
I suggest you ODIN back to stock and start over.

Move all files to Desktop.
- Mount your phone and move the rom to the internal (sdcard/ ) & the update.zip file (if needed)
- Power down the phone, or pull the battery.
3 - DOWNLOAD MODE
*NOTE - IMPORTANT*
On my PC, ODIN will NOT work when my camcorder is plugged in.
If you notice ODIN not working, you may pull the battery if it has not started/hung (again, at YOUR risk, not my fault/responsibility). Remove any USB devices just in case if you are worried about it, I have to.
Quote
1- Open ODIN on your PC. (DO NOT PRESS/SELECT ANYTHING IN ODIN!)
2- Plug in the USB Cable to PC
(preferably the one that came with your phone *My N1 cable doesn't work??*)
3- Power down Phone if you had not already.
4- Remove the battery.
5- Plug USB into Phone.
6- Hold down BOTH volume buttons and while holding both, insert the battery.
7- Two to three seconds later your phone will be in Download Mode.
Be mindful to not remove connection while ODIN is running.
** ALT METHOD
You can also just power down the phone, open ODIN, load the pit and tar, connect USB to pc, hold both volume buttons and connect USB to phone. This is how I do it. Some are not able to do this so the above instructions were used just in case. **
4 - ODIN

Go back to ODIN on your PC. Should be a yellow box under ID COM, Something like COM 5. If not, likely a problem with your drivers, see this THREAD FOR DRIVERS that I created. Should help. If you were on Cyanogen or MIUI you may need the Nexus S Drivers, Google them.
Click the PIT button, Select the PIT file from desktop
Click the PDA button, select the TAR file
** Re-partition is checked now in ODIN - THIS IS APPROPRIATE!! **
Click Start. Unless ODIN hangs, you should see a progress bar start soon after. The process takes a few minutes and you told ODIN to reboot once done.... so... when your phone boots up, you are on stock JFD.
IF ODIN HANGS ON YOU:
- Are you using my files (all 3 of them?)
- Did you check the MD5 using Hashtab (LINK)?
- Are you using the cable that came with your phone?
- Have you tried other USB ports on you PC?
no good, as i try to put it into recovery mode, it keeps rebooting, I even hear the USB connecting and disconnecting as it goes threw its boot loop, odin doesn't even detect it since it reboots so fast.

No, you need to put it in download mode, not recovery mode.
1. Pull the battery.
2. Connect USB Cable.
3. Hold Volume Up & Down.
4. Put battery back in.
5. Download mode.
hold volume up and down as i put the battery in? or hold them then put the battery in?
Put the battery in, hold both volume buttons, then insert USB cable.

I did what you guys told me to, and it just keeps doing the loop. I had ODIN opened without changing any settings, plugged in the usb to the phone, then I went and held volume up and volume down and inserted the battery and kept helding them, I get a pinwheel that comes up for 1 sec, doesnt spin, then another one for another second which also spin, then screen goes black and then I get the CWM based screen that makes the phone reboot, which it does, and then the Vibrant screen appears, goes black, then the Vibrant screen appears, goes black again then the CWM Based screen comes up, then we are back to the Vibrant screen, its a endless loop. I held the Vol + and - the whole time.
Do you have Gingerbread bootloaders?
I dont think so... so no
Any Ideas?

I held the Vol + and - the whole time.

well, i would suggest ebay for a replacement if you are confident enough replacing it yourself, or send it for repair at a local repair shop

yes, if you have CWM installed:
open cwm manager > under reboot choose Download mode > use odin to flash official firmware
If you are rooted you can use button savior on the play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smart.swkey
It will give you a virtual home button

You don't need ROOT for Button Savior if you need only the home button, power off ...[other options may need the root]

i was under the impression that you are not on stock?
if the home button is not working physically, i would either replace it or take collingall's advice
if you still want to flash official firmware, the third option will be a "usb jig"

can i install the official firmware like this?or ''maybe LATER 'i must USE home?
Buy a USB jig. Its a dongle which, when plugged into the phone, forces your phone into download mode. From there you can flash any official firmware (via Odin) for your model. You don't need root permissions for it.

OdinOdin is a piece of software that allows us to flash anything we want to the phone. The file is attached to the bottom of this post.
It is perfectly safe IF USED CORRECTLY!
This is a general guide for using Odin, take a look at this picture (thanks to screamworks):
To get Odin to connect to your phone, you need to boot into 'download mode' by pressing volume down, home, and power keys at the same time, and connect your phone to your PC via USB.

1. Just download the firmware version you want
2. Reboot your phone to download mode.
To get download mode shut down the device. After it shuts off completely simultaneously press the Down volume key+ Home button + press the power button .
You should see a warning asking you to press volume up if you want to continue or volume down to cancel, press volume up. You are now in download mode!
3. Start Odin
4. Click on the PDA button and browse to the .tar or .tar.md5 file that you extracted in step 1
If the package has more than one .tar archive then they will be labelled with PDA, Phone/Modem and CSC. Just put them in the corresponding section of Odin
5. DO NOT PUT .PIT FILE AND DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT TICK REPARTITION.
Anyone ask about .pit file is a moron
Should look like this screenshot
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
If the package has 3 files it should look like this:
Regardless of firmware version it's still the same methodology
6. Connect the USB cable and wait for the ID:COM section to turn yellow
7. Click start to flash
8. Do not disconnect the cable or turn off the device, it will reboot when it finishes.
It will not wipe your phone if you flash as recommended

I Tried to go to CWM Recovery to format the system and try to flash the stock firmware again. but no way
So I Tried to ROOT My "GT-I9300" AGAIN to get CWM Recovery
______Let us begin______

7. Hit “Start” and it should take about 5 seconds for ODIN program to flash CWM Recovery to your Galaxy S3 and you will see “PASS!” when it’s done. Your phone should reboot.

Can i ask why you have come here for support when you disagree with all the help that has been given?
You have given us little to no information like odin logs, process you have taken or file names etc when requested besides a worthless picture that hasnt been seen on the i9300 before.
I agree with boomboomer, you could try the rescue firmware it maybe you last hope you can find it in the stickies.
