Looking for recovery help - Sprint LG G3

I tried to update Android over the weekend and it somehow went wrong. Here's a quick rundown of what it does:
1. Says "installing system update"
2. Goes to text window saying go to Dload mode or Reboot. I'd attach a crappy pic of the screen if I can find a way to upload it directly.
I've had the phone activated for about 360 days, meaning I have about 5 more before I can't make a warranty claim.
To prevent going through cell phone withdrawal (the 24 hours I did endure were absolute agony), I decided to let Sprint sign me up for a 2 year (f)lease of the G4...$8/month...m'eh... So, basically, what I want do is recover pictures and any other personal files (my level 40-odd Clash of Clans, AdVenture Capitalist progress, text messages, notes and doodles) on it before I send it in to LG for a warranty replacement.
I'm a reasonably tech savvy EE, though I deal mostly with analog hardware. I've never got around to trying to root phones; go easy on terms please, include links to any Windows tools!
Thanks!!

Sounds like update didn't flash properly. You can use THIS guide to get you back to ZV4 firmware, then let the phone update itself to ZVC. Or you can search Google for Sprint ZVC tot and .dll file, usually coming in the same package. Replace the ZV4 tot and dll in the guide with it. You must follow that guide carefully.

Did you use Joey's suggestion? Or did you do something else?

**Data** recovery not really phone recovery...
So...both of these methods look like they will wipe the data saved on the phone while it returns them to stock.
What I really want, and apologies if I didn't convey this properly, is some way to simply retrieve the contents of a phone (at the very least is the DCIM folder with irreplacable snapshots of my kids). If there isn't, I'll just fill out the warranty claim and ship it back to LG to get a brand new replacement.

I honestly do not think that you can recover what is saved on the phone if you can not get it to boot into a rom or a custom recovery.

I believe you can if computer will recognize phone in ADB. You must be comfortable sending commands to your phone from DOS prompts on Windows.

[Q] Possible to downgrade after MJ7 update?

Well I made a mess out of this situation... I was trying to do the OTA update for MJ7 but it was failing.. I seemed to be one of a very select few that got this issue but from researching, I found that I should be able to update via the USB cable on my PC and let the verizon update utility that installed on my PC find the update and install it. Fair enough, it came up and showed an update ready. After download it started installing, after about 5 minutes, it times out and gave me some error that I needed to connected to kies and do a recovery as the update failed. No matter what I did, restarting my phone and recovery mode, everything, it kept taking me to that message, unless I went into ODIN mode, that showed as it was supposed to...
to try and wrap this long story short, I tried many methods of recovering my phone and/or finish the update WITHOUT losing data. Everything I found led to a dead end and I found the only way was to run the recovery through the verizon utility app on the PC. It stated it would not keep data and basically do a factory reset in a nutshell.. No problem I thought, I was thinking it would put me back on my original OS version like MI7 or even ME7 and I could root and recover a lot of my data through Titanium Backup... i found there was no way to root MJ7 (yet) although after the fact I saw the article of attempting to keep it after update, but we know how that went... nonetheless.. the repair did reset my phone and it put the MJ7 (latest version) on the phone... great, no root method there... now i read and from what I understand if I try to flash back to a previous version it permanently logs it and marks this new KNOX marker that its been changed and "voids" the warranty and thus far there is no found way to keep that from happening nor reverse it after it does..
Question is... IS all my research correct as stated in above paragraph? OR is there a way I can safely flash back to a previous STOCK OS such as ME7 or MI7, be able to root the phone again, then go back on my merry way (with or without updating to MJ7 this time after I get my data back, hopefully?) If possible, I want to MAKE SURE I have the correct files or a link supplied to a existing post with download links with the right downloads I need to get. Hate to brick the phone again and go through all this waiting all over again. Any help appreciated!
Thanks,
David
Sorry, your correct, there is no way back and no way to root.

So to confirm, even if I were to ODIN my way back to a older stock image like ME7 or MI7, what exactly would occur then? Would it work but tick that KNOX 0x0 to 0x1 thus "voiding" warranty but still take me back to previous version where I may root once again...?? Or...??
This has been said hundreds of times:
You can not move backwards. Once you're on a release, you can only install the same or later software.

If you try to flash older software, it'll fail and softbrick your device. This will only allow download mode, requiring you to flash what's expected to recover your phone.
You'll only trip the Knox warranty flag if you try to flash an un-signed bootloader (and, I think, an unsigned recovery.)

Well then please excuse me. As I said I researched this for a lengthy amount of time, I found mixed answers on this issue found some saying it is not possible but doesn't say why (much like you just did, not explain what happens as I asked, all due respect). I found places saying it is possible but this new "KNOX" thing on the latest version which I know VERY little about, that it would add a "count" or change the value but would work, of course many people don't want to do that with there not being a way to revert it back, from my understanding. Then some articles are handing out download links to restore/downgrade left and right. So again, excuse my confusion. Even after starting to write this article and the subject line I used produced possible matches to what I was about to post about, NONE and I repeat NONE of those options fit my question, so I don't need this "it has been said 'hundreds of times" when I just spend the greater part of my afternoon getting my phone updated then it failing and trying to do anything to get it back up and running one way or another. Not in the best of moods as I lost some precious data on my internal storage that otherwise would be safe and able to be restored from the titanium backup, which is proving useless right now. Nope, that is not your fault, but show a LITTLE more respect to this open community instead of being Mr. Moderator over there correcting me on things that aren't exactly made clear from all the other posts I have read today!

No editing, but there's been two of us replying. JFTR.
Hopefully we've saved you from a trip to softbrick city. :good:
(Edit: I see - the "post edited" - well, what happens is if you post more than once to a thread, the posts get combined where the subsequent posts are marked as edits. That's a bit misleading. THIS is an edit after-the-fact.)
Bummer
Got it. Well thanks...
It's not a question of if but when someone will figure all this out again... especially for a phone as the S4... i'd be more than happy to put forth a donation to further encourage someone to get things rooted AND unlocked again... I have a lot of stuff I'd pay decent money towards getting my data back through my Titanium Backup files... there is still some things I lost and can't even get back through the TB but anything is better than nothing... Where do you give donations through? I've always heard of the "bounty" -- do you have to be in any specific standing on these forums to give to this?

CNM Touchpad 9DC Semi Bricked any ideas?

Got a CNM 9DC Touchpad a few days ago and noticed there was a newer firmware online via the CNM website. Flashed it, flash went ok but when i turned the tablet on it displays a white only screen. Have spent various hours messing about with it since then, resetting, flashing different firmwares etc with no joy. I didn't save the original firmware before flashing it (schoolboy error!).
The only firmware i have found to semi work is the firmware for the 7DC but the screen is far too stretched due to the size difference so therefore unusable but at least i know the tablet isn't completely bricked. Tried emailing CNM but have had no reply so far. Anyone know where i could find the original firmware or how i could solve the problem? :good:
Anyone?
Got the same problem, did you every sort it?
CNM 9DC
Same here happened to me over a week ago. got 2 for my kids at xmas. i wanted to root them and found a website which had rooted versions for 7dc 9dc and 10.1dc. wanting to play it safe i made sure i had download the firmware from the cnm website so i could flash back if there were an problems. with the rooted one i was left with a white screen and it was no better with the cnm firmware. it is working as i get a display using hdmi and im able to control it using a mouse. i do still have one of the tablets with the firmware on which if i could just copy it off would sort the problem im sure but havent a clue how to. i also emailed cnm and got the following in reply.
“All the fir mare we have available is on our website, we do not have any other versions for the 9DC.

Life saver, there is a bit of software you can use to get a flash able back-up from, just need to find the link for it now.

If you manage to get the image then if possible could you please make it available somewhere. I have the exact same problem, but don't have a second one to get an image from. I also feel sure that there are quite a few others out here that would be extremely grateful. If what I have been reading is anything to go by.

Kernel is only 7 meg, both the boot and recovery have the kernel in them, so it's about right, will download and have a play in the morning as have a 4.30 start for work.
Help flashing
has anyone downloaded the files? I have tried to dump again to be on the safe side, but still no luck. i feel so close. im sure you will need the system.img aswell
Try this
flash this file to your tablet http://www.theattab.com/support-nine_dual.html , it will start but you will have no touchscreen, power the tablet off and then flash the boot, kernel and recovery img you made and see what happends.
its working!!!
Its working, i re flashed what i had and its booting into android. whats the best way for me to get it out to you all is there an easy way to package it up?? all i ask is that someone root the bloody thing. little bit worried as it seems to have my google account on it. isnt that stored in the userdata.img?
I flashed mine with the file that lonegunman suggested. Then flashed just the kernel.img to it as I was getting an error when I tried all 3 files. It seems to be working I will give it a proper check and post the end result. Of course if what I have done is likely to cause any problems then please let me know.
Looks like I spoke too soon. I don't seem to be able to enable the wireless at all. Stopped there as didn't seem much point in going further till that's sorted)

If the previously bricked tablet is now working why not factory reset that one then dump image from it. No chance of personal data then.
Is your wireless working ok?
Steve
Indeed, the best thing to do is to flash all the parts, do a factory reset and dump again, there is a tool to make all the img files into 1 file, it's a little hard to explain it all but have a read here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517181&page=2 , in a nutshell you will need to unpack the @tab image and replace all the .img files in the folders with your working .img and as a plus i think this software will root as well, if not then there is another bit that will, will sort out link later.
Can you upload the rest of the files minus the system img one please.
It looks like I finally have it working. Even the wifi
I had to grab a (broken) firmware for the 9dc (search Google for cnm firmware and look for the result that send you to zackehh's blog
Then unpack it using the tool suggested by lonegunman. Replace the boot, kernel and recovery.img files with the ones grabbed from bigdaddy78. Repack it and flash the resulting update_out.img to the tablet.
It looks like I will be able to sleep soundly tonight without worrying that the wife is gonna murder me in my sleep. (yes, it was HER tablet)
Thanks for all the assistance, you have both, quite literally, saved my life
If anyone wants the file I'm more than happy to upload it somewhere for you.
One thing that is a bit odd though is that the model number shows as VS TOUCHTAB 10.1DC
Oh well, at least it's working.
Yes thats because the firmware on the cnm site for the 9 dc is the for the 10.1 tablet, that's why we have all the problems, 1 thing to try is the 7 dc firmware and see if thats any better.
Sent from my GT-N7105 using Tapatalk 2
I tried the 7 dc one, works but the display is a bit big for my liking, any chance of the system.img from your working 9 being uploaded bigdaddy78?

Same thing just happened today with my S5. Can anyone get me info on how to unlock. Rent a Center is no help and quite rude about it. They shouldn't be selling phones that you have no way of knowing they come from them.
This literally just happened to me today in the afternoon, phone locked up after 4 months of great use. I'm not sure how to "flash it to cyanogenmod 12" and I'm worried about bricking the phone. Can anyone spell it out in a little more detail how to do this?

PLEASE READ ALL THE STEPS FIRST and ASK QUESTIONS IF YOU ARE NOT CLEAR.
Download Odin3_v3.09
Download TWRP or any other custom recovery of your choice.
Download Cyanogenmod 12 for G900T : https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=klte -> Put this on your external microSD card. You can use internal storage as well.
Download GApps for Cyanogenmod 12 http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Google_Apps#Downloads -> Put this on your external microSD card. You can use internal storage as well.
Run Odin and flash TWRP or any other custom recovery of your choice to your phone. This will set KNOX security flag to 1, meaning no more warranty for the phone if you send it to Samsung to repair something else. Follow this http://www.droidviews.com/install-twrp-recovery-samsung-galaxy-s5/ or watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuAT7GwSAic
Boot into custom recovery ( with phone off, press and hold Volume Up and Home keys while turning on the phone ) and Wipe -> Advanced wipe -> Wipe System, Dalvik, Cache and Data. This will erase everything on the phone. No need to do ROM back up as we have Stock ROM available for this model to go back if needed. Your choice.
Flash/Install Cyanogenmod 12 zip file and then GApps zip file
Reboot
Let your phone sit for 10 minutes.
Cyanogenmod 12 is the only way to use the phone without the "Rent-A-Center" screen at this point. I tried multiple Stock ROM from 4.4.2 to 5.0 But phone still showed the lock screen after initial setup.
Same thing happened to a client today. RAC Just started this?
First I woukd lie to express just how outraged I am at this new policy. As if worrying and checking ESN's to ensure a phone is not active or stolen or if there is an iCloud account on an iPhone now we have to worry about them being "rented"? And there is no DB for this, you would have to call every Rent to Own shop in the ares to verify it's safe to buy.
But enough ranting, I too have heard that flashing Cyanogenmod works to remove this lock. I mean the losers who rent a phone and then sell it are scum. You check the ESN and it's clean, 6 months later you get RAC ads and pin locks? No way...
So, the method you've outlined has no steps for rooting or unlocking the bootloader. Does this work simply because it's being flashed via Odin as opposed to the usual way of rooting and reflashing.
I called RAC and of course they are not sillng to help. My business didn't even have a shop when I purchased that S5, and now months later the customer I sold it to comes back to me with this. I understand why in a way but what does she expect me to do? I've never heard of or seen this RAC bs until now.
This phone jas already been factory unlocked which can be done only by netting contractual obligations. Besides, how is it fair to flag the device? How could anyone possibly have known it was a "rental". Who the heck rents phones? Seems like abwhite trashy thing to do. The selling of said item makes it that even more so. Leaving the innocent people to deal with the hassle.
Someone please tell me there is a way around this, this is THE mobile development site. Not "A" site...THE site. This device has unwanted bloatware on it basically. So let's remove it. Again, how does one flash a custom recovery and Rom with no root access or an unlocked bootloader?
Thanks in advance!
PAinguIN

Actually, nevermind, this answered all of my questions. Have not tried it yet, but I'm confident... I'll let you all know of it works. Cheers!

Sucks for people like me who buy a phone only to find out six months later it was stolen from rent a center. Then get treated the way I am getting treated by them. I can not believe that there is nothing on the phones that lets you know it is from them. Thought I was just buying an unlocked phone. If anyone in Illinois could help me get this unlocked with cyanogenmod I would appreciate it.
Please help

Somehow & IDK how, but I downloaded the source code for the lgms330 & it also comes with instruction to make a custom rom with it!!!!!
I'm so excited!!! once I get my phone back from LG to fix my phone & send it back to me...(they won't let me fix it myself)
Im going to build cyanogenmod & TWRP for LG K7 in the meantime

1. I rooted my lg k7 (metropcs)
2. I created an app to install the xposed framework WITHOUT A RECOVERY
3. It work! but after further testing my app....it started to reboot my phone whenever I tried to run the installer script...since xposed framework was already installed from the first initial attempt....it way suppose to say it way already installed...but this only happen on this device but NOT my shield TV(i do NOT know why & do NOT have any logs)
4. after my latest testing of getting everything to work...I tried the latest concept I came up with a better way to install xposed framework succesfully...
5. it failed completely since now I soft brick my device...so in order to fix my device now.... is for anyone who has this device & has root could give me the following:
1. boot.img
2.userdata.img
3. recovery.img
4. system.img
5. other img file here
I really need this phone to work again because app development & (hacking) is a hobby of mine & the lg k7 is my only phone that has root & my only MAIN phone too since my kyocera hydro wave sucks & its sorta hardware broken....
also I did explained a few thing about the app im in the middle making...BUT, Once I fix this bug(s)....I will try to release it on google play or somewhere on here
you won't believe how easy it was...to do it without a recovery!

Read that some one made the KINGROOT TO CHAINFIRE SU conversation but then ended in a bootloop. I need to know if the switch was the cause or was it because of something else? I would love to switch and have a terminal script to do so but not chancing a brick or loop.

So as soon as i do a rom dumo and make a library of stock images to post im going to start a busyboc and see what i can do. i have 2 and endless possibilities of complete restore if nothing happes to the chassis.
:cyclops:
And from what i see is a boom in one click rooters messing up binary and tripping knox and bootloops are the ffirst occurence of little knowledge ..... bootloops keep the kiddies busy becoming Adults. I had bootloops when i was a kid too.but the FRP binary pick up and kknox kickin half of us {me included} on the knobel kernel...... im sick of bootloops tooo

I hope you 2 are serious ....... i put plans aside to romdump and make partitian uploads .... now i have never been apart of a forum so where do i upload too? How do i make an official post with model #. Build # and android static being code? Do i use my own drive cloud? Whats propper form to post? Copy a senoir? Ask a senior for help and development approval? I mightas well publish the root solution right? Uhgggggg.....
Ok ok........ would a senior developer help me out a little.... heres what i wanna post...... unboxing 2) lg ms330 k7 metro mobile devices and romdump.... going to do all partitions raw .img and .tar zips with exceptions that must be in place to use as recovery ....... root solution .... or root failure lol... recovery images with all info (ill make sure to flip the goo.gl FRP switch the wrong way once ! Joke joke....) ...... i didnt see a forum on posting real official facts in official forumns unnocially....
Well itll be about 12 hours any way ..... someone will let me know..... i have noticed that no one has really posted a tried root solution... guide.... its got alot of ppl anxious so maybe this will help. Well there are a couple but they are all loopy unfortunately

I used the latest kingroot from the official site to root - then used Supersu Me from the Playstore to replace kingroot with Chainfire's Supersu. Worked like a charm, not a single issue.

I havent tried to install supersu in my terminal app (yet) I just finished on my app & just started testing it on my own....I will try to add a supersu option for anyone who has root, but not from supersu
It seems most can't understand the situstion im in....
I actually rooted my device, but the complications came after when i made an app to install the xposed framework...it worked the first time, but when i tried to install it again to see what will happen...the app crashed & rebooted my phone...after the third attempt I was left with a brick....
So my issue here is that I DID NOT have trouble on gaining root....HOWEVER I figured out why my app broke my phone & I fixed my issue(s) & added many safety protocols to be initated if the the same case ever happen again

ON this end things are great but im on one and just going to clone the other .... but i hadnt heard from anyone ..... i need to know protocol to post findings in an official way and the .img .zips and .md5 files.
i have had terrible luck with LG taking root and then Loopburn in the past and im just waiting to see these under "performance" conditions where the android system exSU id really crunched .... thats when the ls770 went bonkers along with another i got siittin in the "test me im done" pile lol
Is there a stone cold reliable method to root and flash TWRP for the k7 with minimal risk?
LG K7 MS330 MetroPCS rooted recovery image in TWRP or CWM would be the answer
Are you asking us if we have the clean fresh ms330 rooted recovery image along with the images written route of system root for integral forensic troubleshooting for later non recovery solvable issues? The image im trying to figure out how to make on this freshly rooted k7 sitting in front of me with barely a sign on ... on to it. The one that every little question is crucial to someone else maybe rooting their devise if i do this right?
Was that the question?
What kills me is IVE NEVER EVEN SEEN A CWM RECOVERY and i gotta make an image for one ? ! > ! HELP
I am not joking ..... I havent been a PHONIE long. LOL I cant believe i get any of it this far along ...... I did brick and run over 3 Sams notes along the way!
any way any help? i seem to be a little alone in this endeavor

Not as well as I liked.... K7 a little akward
I had as just a hard time if not equal to the ms770 stylo ... Im beginning to not like LG grrrr. It's almost like the bootloader is locking .... As this thread started it was all about the su binary not taking it then maybe rooted after restore. But in both devices I had to uninstall root. Just had root until reboot and a mess after that. Is there another issue with the bootloader on lg? I can say that I think there is a diference in su ap and installed binary so pay attention.
I did not do well in my imaging ability... I should have reached to ask assistance but need to start and finish these two. I went ahead and customed them with out root apps ... The buyers didnt carecause they never seen root apps anyway. Im getting another this week ... More time hopefully
I've seen quite a few people swear off LG. In my opinion their phones aren't bad but I guess as far as 3rd party developement, they make it difficult.

my personal opinion is playing is that using apps without recovery is stupid. i am also guilty of being stupid/impatient and f'n up my phone. but lets not encourage stupidity bro. educate the people. i installed xposed through adb before recovery was available too but, and for those of us that are just tired of typing the commands, copy, paste, rename directory and all its awesome. but to mass distribute it to the masses of newbs????? how many willl soft brick their phone cause thet wanted their wifi signal bars to look like a deathstar. (yes, mine do) i've had more than a few items in the repository cause mine to bootloop. and this is complicated and frustrating to fix as i'm sure you saw that recovery only has factory reset option. they don't give you superuser permissions out of the box for a reason. theyd loss their ass doing warranty repairs and file bankruptcy. and then no more android. sorry bro better shuck out that 600 bucks for that new iphone that seriously looks exactly like that other iphone when you turn it on. oh, and my sisters tablet after it got the latest update. i've been up too long and i'm babling all this to say i'm searching site for system.img because i dropped and broke my first k7. and when i got the new one and didn't unlock bootloader 2nd time. i feel like jeff goldbloom in jurassic park "they spent so much time trying to figure out whether or not they should they never stop to think about wether or not they should" lol. do you have the system.img? picked up a sweet send_command unbrick method from dealing with a boost stylo. non unlockable bootloader. no custom recovery. this made this unbrick guide and gave up on twrp for it. my girl got one cause i had a metro version thats badass. i love it best bargain out there for the price. but i dropped it out of the attic at workand now the cell radio doesn't work. wifi bluetooth and all are good though and the case did protect the screen but no longer functions as a phone???? go figure got this k7 cause that was all i could afford that very day. a week later i'm bootlooping it being careless even though i know better. this is my little hobbie but my girl gets mad i spend too much time at home so i be trying to do things riding to work in between houses and want to have phone back up and functional before get there cause let's face it. trying to explain that your phone was bootlooping all day and you needed a file off your pc to fix it andthats why havent answered all day only works a few times before it gets ugly. lol. babbling again system.img please?

I can download the actual source code for the LG ms330(LG K7) yet LG wont send me the same firmware file for me to flash in download mode so I can fix my phone myself...I really did like LG though....but this screwed me on a whole new level.

LG G3 (sprint) root not working, because I suck or something else?

So I am really new at this and have problems even getting through reading a sentence without having to google terms and read for pages... I am not getting far reading old posts on this specific phone because its from 2013 or there abouts. I keep reading about someone having luck with x rooting tool but with some older andriod version or whatever. I have watched a few videos on youtube as well but don't know which to trust or still even apply.
I am getting sick of the phone being a battery hog, lagging more that another older phone a nexus 5 with lower specs, and all the annoying sprint bloatware that may or may not be causing other issues. I am using hangouts and freedompop for my phone service anyhow. I just want a simple phone webbrowser, camera... I dont need to cloud print, keep track of my heartrate, have two screens open, tv remote, fm radio.... or to have sprint constantly be unclosable in the background. Just some of my motivations for attempting this.
I have tried kingroot (pc on a pos netbook, as the soon to be exwife took the good pc). I have also tried towel root. Kingroot tried for a while and gave up I was #95 with the same problem. Towel root just said something about a rare phone and that it didn't work. I will try whatever again to get a more proper error message but thats the best I remember at the moment :silly:
What current method should I be looking at to root this LG G3 phone? Is it a difficult phone to root or am I just making it difficult? Should all of the rooting methods that did work 2-3 years ago still work or no?
Let me know if I need any more info from this thing.
andriod version 5.0.1
kernal ver 3.4.0
build # LRXZ1Y
software version LS9902VG
model # LGLS990
OK so honestly with or without root the G3 was a major battery hog(that display is very power hungry and when I had my Verizon G3 I always had to carry a portable battery with me just so I could get through my work day... That being said-with root and a decent AOSP ROM and kernel you can kinda make it more tolerable- being that you're on Lollipop(5.0.1) means towelroot won't ever work, kingroot should work but without unlocking the bootloader with either "Loki" or "Bump" you'd just have root and no custom recovery to flash ROMs and the things you need. I know for a fact there is a few different threads in the LG G3 general and in the Sprint G3 threads to get you rooted and get TWRP flashed on there with no problems-- I'll post some links here shortly for you that will hopefully get you rooted and booted
---------- Post added at 11:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:54 PM ----------
@jere-m check these out https://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-lg-g3/help/rooting-ls990zvg-problems-t3528679
Last Post says it all with a link- run the batch file and manually reboot into download mode, let the .bat file run and do it's thing and use Flashify to flash a Bumped TWRP recovery image... Hope this helps you out and if you have any issues or questions PM me or post here and I'll answer ASAP... (oh and please if you get any error messages please post exactly what they said and what was done to make the error come up) And make sure you have a copy of the ToT or KDZ file for the same model/version you are currently using so you can restore to 100% stock and try again.
