Help retrieving files (broken screen) + (auto restarting) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an old phone. I didn't worry about getting the files off it too much until I broke the screen.
The phone already had issues that it would restart shortly after the boot cycle completes. I could not get it to stop. Once the USB connection is made and everything should work it turns off without the proper shutdown.
I don't have the money to get the screen repaired nor buy a new screen and do the repair myself.
I would like to know what I can do.
I realize this may be a situation where it may not be recoverable without some repair first.
Thank you.

I think even with a repaired screen it will still reboot after start? Then a new screen won't help.
Are you sure you can't connect via USB because it's rebooting all the time? Perhaps you only have a lockscreen which prevents accessing the storage.

Yes I'm sure. I have actually found out that the firmware was reset to stock when I was playing around with it. So I actually don't have anything to get off of it as I thought I did.

HD2 glitch preventing usage

I successfully rooted my HD2 some time ago and have used various ROMs on it. I currently use that Core Cell Evo ROM. Two nights ago I accidentally spilled a little water on the phone and immediately turned it off and took out the battery. I let it dry for a day but ever since my phone will turn back on and boot into windows, but once it's there it will constantly have the volume screen pop up & show the volume go up & down and will not recognize anything I do with it. I thought to try and re-install the rom but with the volume issue it won't even allow me to sync the phone with my PC and the 'CustomRUU.exe' file just says 'communication error'.
is my phone done for or is there anything i can do?
(note: i've even unloaded a whole can of air duster in every crack i could find on the phone)
i'm pretty sure, your volumekeys are "damaged" or short curcuited.
i think, they're sending a "press" to the phone, even when you don't press them..
it would be nice, if there was a "hack" to dissable those two keys..i think with that you could use your phone normal..without volume control but pretty full usage.
you're not able to get into bootloader right? this would be your chance to flash via costumruu..but if my guess is right, you cant go into it...

correct, i can't do anything with it due to the volume key problem. i suppose i should look into dissambling the phone and seeing if i can just pull out the button all together.
yeah but if the short curcuit is on the mainboard, this won't help...
so i would look for any .cab which disables the keys..
one problem is already there: how to install it?
DN41
edit: i'm pretty sure you can disable them by registry...you need to get access to the phone via activesync or via the phone itself....

i've thought of similiar things myself, although when i connect the phone to my pc it continues to do the volume up/down glitch and won't allow me to actually use active sync. mobile device center says 'not connected' and the phone doesn't show up in windows explorer either.
i talked to a local cell phone repair store but all they said was "all we can do is take it apart and clean it but if that doesn't fix it then we can buy the phone off of you as a parts phone".
thats really bad..all programs i know to get access to a pda needs a running active sync connection...

well, just so everyone knows..
an HD2 can bounce off of your dash and severely crack your windshield and still be perfectly fine...
but the slighest bit of water and you're screwed.

[Q] i717 Note Bricked and sending in for warranty replacement - Need to get pictures

My i717 was bricked due to faulty screen (not my fault) not sure why the screen has to do with anything turning on, regardless the phone wont turn on at all. AT&T said its covered by warranty and I'm getting a new phone this week. Only problem is now that my phone is bricked, I cant get any of my pictures. I have a lot and some important ones. Is there anyway to recover these photos from the bricked phone. I cant even go into download mode let it alone turn on so solution needs to bypass that. Thanks.
Your screen won't turn on, or your phone won't turn on? If is just the screen, you should still be able to connect to your pc and just copy your pics in the DCIM/camera Folder l folder. Something doesn't sound right about this though. You sure you didn't flash something that you shouldn't have? I've never heard of a phone just up and brick all on its own... Gues it don't matter at this point, just Find it very odd.

Unless the device can be powered on (regardless of screen operation ) and if USB connection is enabled prior to the failure, you will not be able to access the internal EMMC partition on the device.
External storage can of course be removed for access via PC or alternate device.
Ultimately, if the device can be seen by PC when powered, the data can be recovered.
But without power...for the internal board....via USB interface ...you won't be successful.
I suppose it's possible to force power to the mainboard via jumper wires, similar to the riffbox and JTAG methodology.
But of course, that is well beyond my skill set.
Rather than requesting a JTAG or similar repair, you might could contact the same folks that repair the device.
Mobiletechvideos.com
They could certainly tell you if internal access is possible using the forced methods they have perfected for our devices.
That's really all I've got at this point ...g
you didnt use a micro sd card?
i dont see it getting off the device any other way

I had the same issue except it was just a non functioning LCD. I booted the phone into recovery and pulled everything off using ADB. if your phone wont turn on, (like mentioned before) then there's no way to access the internal memory through the phone. You'd need to pull the phone apart, which would void your warranty
Seems like you have good advice on your current situation...but maybe for the future...
Try downloading Dropbox. They have an auto-upload feature that saves images to your dropbox. Could keep a situation like this from happening again.
resesInv but
Thanks for all the advice, the phone did brick up all on its on at&t described it as a faulty screen but the whole phone is bricked. I appreciate the help and responses but looks like I am SOL. Not that I am an alien to the inside of a phone, but if I were to open it up, I'm sure AT&T would void the warranty, costing be 540$. Looks the dropbox idea would be a good idea the for future.
Or even an SD card would be better for your personal media than using internal memory.

[Q] Recover data from Nokia 710

Hi guys/gals,
I've been passed a Nokia 710 by a friend of mine. She managed to drop it in a bowl of water at work and has been refused a fix under warranty (not surprising). This was a few weeks ago, so the phone is fully dried out. It boots up, makes the start-up sounds and the three buttons on the front work, but the screen is totally blank - although touch-screen response seems to work still.
I have installed Zune, but whenever I connect the phone I get "Phone setup incomplete" and a message to disconnect the phone and complete the remaining steps on the phone. Without a screen to see I have no idea what I should be doing.
Is there a simple solution to this, or is there some way of connecting to the internal memory to recover the data from it some other way?

How did she do that, I don't think you can recover the data from your phone, Zune is giving you an update error which means that the update isn't intalled completly.
What you can do, but you had to do that a lot earlier, is to put the phone in a bowl of rice (not water ) and wait a few days, that's the only thing I can think about at the moment.
Succes,

She had the phone in her pocket when she bent over. I think the problem may be down to a key-lock on the phone which needs to be entered first, but am waiting for her to get back to me.
Thanks for the help though, I didn't expect much else.

Plug it into a Linux machine and copy direct from the phone as any other USB flash drive would work
Or uninstall Zune and use the reg hack to allow that to be done in windows

Fantastic, thank you. Following the link you posted also took me to another site USB Storage Enabler for Windows Phones 7 which might be useful for anyone else coming up against this in the future, or simply wanting to use their device as a USB drive, not requiring Zune.

I think the phone is reset entirely..
and the reason you couldn't connect to zune is because you haven't completed the initial boot procedures...
There are many ways to get your phone started...
But I don't think its of any use unless, you have your screen working..

PLEASE help! The phone doesn't turn on neither charges!

Hi,
I wasn't doing anything special with the phone, but it was acting weird - didn't allow me to make calls, hang them up in the middle, and restarted the phone, until it didn't turn on again.
It's now completely black, connecting to charger doesn't do anything either.
I tried different batteries, didn't help.
update:
After putting the battery in and trying to turn it on, even though nothing is visible - the phone gets warmer after few minutes.
I'm pretty sure it's not the screen because I would've hear the opening sound and feel the vibration..
Please help!
Thank you
Nobody here can help you with a hardware issue, you should know that having been here for as long as you have. Service centre or local mobile repair shop for diagnosis.
I already saw posts here with the same problem and some suggestions to solutions from other users.
Thought somebody here might try to give an idea so I'll know better when I go to the repair center.
Does it boot in recovery (home+ volume up+power) then wipe data factory reset if it boots in download mode(home+vol down+power) the download stock tar and flash it via odin otherwise hardware issue

'until it didn't turn on again. It's now completely black, connecting to charger doesn't do anything either'
Why won't people read OP/threads before sprouting nonsense on here.
OP - There's been one poster on here who seems to think this issue might be solvable by replacing the 'power IC' (whatever that is) on the motherboard, but the normal fix (if you want it fixed guaranteed) is to replace the motherboard. Reason being, if there's more than one component dead on the motherboard, you're going to pay twice - once for the individual component replacement which doesn't fix the problem, and again to replace the motherboard which will fix the problem.
Better to do it right first time.
Went to the service center
I gave it to the service center, they said it's a serious short circuit and they're probably going to have to "JTAG it".
I asked them if there is any way to save my information before they do that, they said no.
My question is to you - do you agree? Or can you think of a way to backup the phone before that?
Isn't there a way to read the memory using an external device and back it up?
I need a quick reply.
Thank you
Nope, if you don't have it backed up, no chance. Although, there's a very slim chance a company that specialises in recovery of data from dead hard drives might be able to. Expect this to be very expensive if it is at all possible.
Also, there's a fair chance a JTAG won't work as well, it's quite possible only a motherboard replacement will fix it. But you might be lucky.
Thank you for your quick reply
Another update
Hi,
There's another update - they now say they need to replace "power component".
Google search didn't find anything called "power component".
They also said that replacing that component will cause the data to be lose.
What do you think?
Thanks

Weird brick.

Hey, guys, before sending it to the LG services, I'd like to tell you what's this thing about, while editing aboot.img to unlock the bootloader, I think I made a mistake there, anyway, finished the bootloader unlocking process, and then I gave it a reboot. Now I'm left with a black screen. :/
Can't enter download mode, neither recovery. can't even see anything in device manager, but, if I put it to charge and I take the battery out, I can see the charging screen, an empty battery and yellow exclamation sign on it.
What's your opinion? Should I just send it to service, telling them that old story about updating the phone and the screen suddenly became black, or should I try to do some magic?
Anyway, not seeing anyting in Device manager tells me that the motherboard is DEAD.

First of all sorry for your trouble. It seems like a hard "brick". The only way to solve this issue is to send the phone to service. Say that there was a electric shortage or cutout while updating.
Before doing that you may try to update the drivers on your PC (even id they are new install it again), then try to put the phone in a different USB slot and wait for 10+ minutes to see if it enters download mode. This is quite a hail Mary, chances of this working is %0.001- But doesnt hurt trying. your device is looking forward for a service guy touch..

I know it needs a service guy touch, but I was wondering if there's something worth a try. Even if it has such a low chance to work, I'll still try that, thanks for the reply!
