So I recently swapped from the Z1C to the Z5C.
Backed up everything using the Backup and Restore app from the Z1C, saved everything to the SD Card.
Now the Z5C will not find the backup to restore from.
I know that the Z1C backed everything up in .semc-fullbackup that resides in the root of the SD Card, and that the Z5C is looking for the files in SDcard/Android/data/SonyBnR, but the file structure is completely different.
Given that my Z1C is no longer available, am I stuck?
Probably - it's a terrible back-up and restore app. I tried to use it just to test the back-up/restore feature on my Z3C and couldn't even get it to recognize it's own back-up file. Even if you're not rooted Titanium Backup is the way to go from now on.

I'm curious about this. Maybe someone can enlighten me.
Lets say that I'm on stock 2.2, rooted. I do a nandroid backup. Then I allow the upgrade for 2.2.2. Of course I lose root.
Will a nandroid restore, restore root, or will I have to root again?
A full nandroid restore will restore everything - the system and data - and you will be right back where you were, on 2.2 and rooted.

Ahh, okay.
So to confirm that I understand you correctly...
...the 2.2.2 update won't hold after the nandroid restore? I'll be back to 2.2, as it was before the (2.2.2) update?
If you just wanna backup and restore your apps, use Titanium Backup (it's free on the Market).
Nandroid backs up your entire phone. When you restore a nandroid backup your phone will be exactly like it was when you made the backup. Restoring a nandroid backup is used to recover from a crash or to revert to a previous ROM.
After a ROM change I will set up my accounts, root if needed and do any other basic setup stuff and then, before installing any apps, do a nandroid backup. I can then go back to a "fresh install" if I want to. I also do a nandroid each weekly to capture the state of my phone.
Backing up apps and restoring them across different ROMs may or may not work for you. When I have tried this with Titanium Backup I had many force closes and ended up reinstalling everything from the market. Others have had success. I have read the MyBackup pro does better, but most suggest that you just backup and restore data not the app itself.
I have not tried backing up my apps to Google, which you can do in later versions of Android. Go to Privacy in the setting menu and then to Backup and restore. There are boxes for data backup and automatic restore you can check. maybe someone who has used this can comment on how well it works.
If your nandroid backups hang up at "backing up firstboot" get the latest version of StreakMod Recovery.

After installing a fresh ROM and rooting my device, the first thing I do is install Busybox. Then, with Titanium Backup I do Restore Apps Only, then reboot my device. I never get any FC's with this restore process.
Thanks!
Thank you everyone. I appreciate the info.
I've used Titanium BU, and have busybox installed too.
It was just a matter of if after an update (OTA), and restore with Nandroid, would root still be in place.
I totally understand what you guys are saying now.
I've also been using MyBackup to see how it compares to Titanium. So far so good.

I prefer mybackup root to titanium. It's far more user friendly and more automated (in the free version). As for nandroids, I always take a backup before doing any system changes (hacks or rom updates) so I can roll back to a known good system if needs be.
BTW - it is a good idea to copy your ROM backups to another device, just in case your SD card dies. I copy mine to one of my desktop computers and to a USB drive. I usually back up my entire SD card, except my music folders, every couple of weeks.
Where does Nandroid put the backups so I can rename them and save off phone?
mine (from Streakmod recovery) are in /sdcard/rom_backup
StreakMod recovery puts the backups on the SD Card in a folder named rom_backup.
Each backup is in a sub-folder of it's own and uses a date-time format for the folder name. I rename the folders with a meaningful name by just pre-pending to the name. So my last backup is named BB351-2011-06-18-02.41.04. The following files are created:
.android_secure.img
boot.img
cache.img
data.img
firstboot.img
recovery.img
system.img
nandroid.md5
the md5 file is a text file that contains the md5 sums for the other files. This file is used to verify the other files when they are restored.
I've got TB pro, so i did a batch backup and decided before i flash any new roms again, that TB is working.
Backing up completes fine.
But it won't restore apps.
I updated to the latest TB pro, cleared my data and set app processing mode to AUTO, Indirect, but that didn't help either.
Any solutions?
Maybe TB canĀ“t find the path for the backup? That happened to me when I flashed an ICS rom that changes the path of both internal and external SD.
I cant imagine how, i havent changed roms at all!
I literally just batch backed up all my apps, then uninstalled two apps and tried restore them but neither would restore
Got the same problem for a long time now..... Tried everything
If u made a zip file then extract it nomrally and install the apps
next time use nandroid backup.
Dont forget hitting thanks......
Having always rooted my phones I never had an issue backing up apps and data via Titanium backup but am now looking for a solution to back up apps and their data on my non-rooted Z2.
Having just flashed the latest Z2 firmware via Flashtool which wipes the phone, I've restored backups I had made with Sonys Back Up and Restore app only to find it didn't backup all it said it did, so had a number of apps and data missing.
Can anyone recommend a solution to this

I was in the same boat as yourself, Ive found a good one is HELIUM, plus helium will state what apps don't have a backup option coded into them so unlike sonys own app u wont be annoyed when some apps do/don't backup Also Helium allows cloud backups as well as internal and external sd card backups
Im currently using helium for apps and Mybackup pro for my text message backups as I found heliums message backups were weirdly in the opposite date order to normal use( instead of latest being at bottom of list it was at top)
Thanks mate, will give Helium a try

Just confiming, does Hellium doesnt back up the app data like TB?
I know ive read somewhere there is an app by chainfire for app and data backup for non rooted but at first glance it seem a bit long winded so never bothered with it.
I used easy backup which restored my apps, sms, mms, call log etc all no probs but yeah problem was no data backed up so had to set them all up like email, settings etc all over again.
I understand Unlocking and Rooting an Xperia is a tough task. But the stock ROM is good enough.
A good article here. It helped me and it may help you too buddy.

well your not gonna get the same level of backup due to lack of root, but for me it saved things like game progression(i.e angry birds) but didn't save things like custom widget sets in HD widgets app. But not the end of the world.
Ive started looking at my backups a bit more in detail and asking do I really need a backup of some apps, as some are just install-login to app and use no custom data to speak of to really backup. Or other apps like XDA app and game progression which have custom settings and progression Id like to save.

bro, Last time I used Helium is when it was called Carbon, I tried it with Xperia S and it didn't worked at all, after that I saw this in it's description in Play Store
Note: Some Sony devices have issues with Helium. This includes the Xperia S and Xperia Z. Sony has *disabled* backup on these devices completely.

I lost hope after that, so does it work now on Z2 ?
I'm still not in a hurry to have Z2 as there's still no way to root without unlocking the bootloader, and I will not unlock the bootloader without backing up the TA partition first ( which requires root )... so I've been looking for a way to copy some of my app's data from my old phone to Z2, I used to use Titanium Backup always but you know, no root = no TB...
so can you confirm please that you used Helium to backup AND restore app's data to the Z2 ? or you're just guessing from a non-xperia experience ?

I used helium to backup my apps on my s3 then install them on my z2, ive also backedup up my current apps on my z2 since, but like ive already said helium cant backup certain apps as the app developer hasn't allowed backup function. Helium did the job for me for my game progression and a few apps where I wanted current setup saved.
LG G3 running Android 5.1.1 and TWRP 2.8
I made a backup using TWRP, connected my phone to my PC, and dragged and dropped the backup folder from my phone to my PC. I then deleted the backup from my phone and did a factory data reset. I put the backup back onto my phone by dragging and dropping, tried to use TWRP to restore the backup, and realized I had made a mistake. I very rarely mess with backups on my phone so it wasn't until later that I found out I wasn't moving the backup to my PC in the proper way. Is there anything I can do now or am I just SOL? I did a quick search but didn't come up with any clear answers. The backup folder I put on my PC is 8 GB but from what I read I'm missing files from the backup because of the way I put it on my computer.

There are tools to restore files even after a factory reset. Try those to restore your backup you deleted on the phone.

I tried apps on my phone from the play store and apps on my computer that require the phone to be connected to the computer. I wasn't able to find the backup that had been on my phone. Luckily, I had transferred all of my pictures to my computer before the factory reset so really all I have to do is spend the time getting all of the settings and apps back where they were and I didn't lose anything very important. Thanks for the help though. That was a good idea.
Can anyone recommend a system backup/restore app that I can use to save my apps and settings, then later restore them to a new phone? I tried Helium last time but when I tried to restore my backup it told me that my backup file was invalid, so I'd like to try something more reliable this time!
I'm running stock Android 7, not rooted.
Titanium Backup (paid version) is what I've been using for years since it backs up to the external SD - plus I use the regular Google sync to backup my settings etc. That way I'm back online pretty fast after flashing a new rom
