For anyone who wants to order their 3.5mm solution now, take a look at this one from HTC: http://www.expansys-usa.com/p.aspx?i=159613
It’s the page for one listed as being for a Touch Cruise, but there’s a page with one for every HTC phone. I’ve been using it for a few months on my HTC Touch Cruise and it’s great. The plug itself is compact, no different in size than a 3.5mm headphone plug -- and stays put (it isn't shown in the photo). It has 2 parts, the cord with the plug at one end, and a microphone with a 3.5mm jack at the other. The other part is the throwaway earbud headphones that you can toss and use your own. No bulky dongle, and makes any favorite pair of headphones into your microphone/stereo headset. Personally, I forget HTC forgot the 3.5mm jack with this one, as it's just a cable, not an annoying adapter.
The pinout of the mini-usb jack on the G1 is the same as all other HTC phones, so at the very least the microphone and stereo audio will work. Some features of the answer-button that may or may not work on the G1: push once to answer; pushing while on a call places the call on hold; 2 quick presses redials the last number; 1 long press activates voice dial. Most likely, the button will mimick whatever functionality is present with the headset that ships with the device.
It's made by HTC, and is very durable. Beware the adapters from Seidio -- they last a couple weeks and then start to give out, audio stutters, fades in/out -- they're not constructed well and within a month or so the ends start to get loose from the wire; and you can't exactly run to Best Buy for replacements.
The budget-shipping rate from MobilePlanet.com should have them to you well before your G1 arrives
Question. How far will the microphone be from my mouth? How good is the microphone...the problem is my regular headphones are kinda long like the wire is probably a good 20 inches.
So by the time its plugged into the adapter the mic is gonna be 20 inches from my mouth..and I want to be able to pic up without using the phone? will it work?
Probably -- the mic is in the end that your headphones plug into, I don't know how long it is, but I do hold the mic up a bit when I use it as that. Primarily, I like it as it's not a dongle and in use is no different than having a 3.5mm headphone plugged in. The plug itself isn't big, it stays put, and if I need to speak on it I can. The mic quality is OK, though it picks up all background noise, and a slight breeze can sound like a windstorm. Talking on it is just a convenience for me, I really wanted a standard type stereo headphone cable that I could pick up a call on. My devices tend to be music players first, and phones 2nd.

Hey all,
I've been looking for some earbuds that don't require an adapter and just plug into the G1's current plug, or have an annoying mic; just to listen to music with.

I ordered a few of those. I will let you guys know how long it takes to get to the US and how I like the adapter itself. I also need one for the car that lets me charge and then convert to 3.5 to go into my aux input in my car.

Same volume as the headset that ships with it. Try it and see.
sorry i wasnt clear, i didnt mean does an adaptor effect the sound, purely what is mp3 quality and sound like through headphones generally on g1 (standard headphones or not) compared to say i-phone,nokia,sony erricson etc

i have one of those adapters, i got it for my wing way back, i think they were like 99 cents or something so i bought a bunch, they wear out pretty fast though, there nice to play music from my g1 in my car, i just wish there was a way to keep the microphone on the phone so i could talk on the phone and have the audio come through my cars speakers.
Headphone adapter
The newer G1s are shipping with a really nice official headphone adapter in the box, but I can't find it for sale anywhere. Are early adopters just left out in the cold with no headphone support? HTC has these ExtUSB ports on every one of their phones but they don't seem to sell any official adapters so I'm going to be stuck buying sub-par chinese adapters off of Ebay.

It looks the same as the standard headphones the only difference is that at the head phones them selves aren't attached to the remote (one end of the remote is the usb cable and the other is a 3.5mm port) they are 3.5mm head phones. I called t-mobile about it because my brother got one and they said they new nothing they said it wasn't on the packing list so I called HTC and they said they new nothing and since there was no bulletin they could not send me anything. I went to my local t-mobile store asked them about it and they gave me a new one out of a returned phone. The reason that tmobile says that they are not shipping them with a 3.5mm adapter is because its just a modified head phone and not an adapter and head phones in the box. I would recommend going to your local t-mobile store and asking about it.

Hi, I have searched on this forum for a better HTC hero headphone replacement thread but I've had no luck, also Google hasnt been helpful too which is why I am creating a new thread.
I have misplaced my Hero headphone and I would like to know which headphone will be a better replacement for the phone. I purchased iPhone 3GS headphone today but it can only Play/Pause (I am returing back tomorrow) Any suggestion will be highly appreciated and useful

I would like some higher quality, noise isolation earphones. However, I would also like to be able to control music from the headphones like you can with the stock HTC set. Is that a standard thing? Will any headphones with music controls work?

Wait a sec, according to the specs this is going to plug into the USB port on the hero? I want it to plug into the 3.5mm jack just like the included headphones.

Why does it matter that it plugs into the USB port? Its got a 3.5mm jack on it so you can plug your headphones into it. I don't actually use one myself, I plug my headphones directly into the 3.5mm jack on the Hero and don't use any remote.
As to headphones in your price range, I'd look at ones by Etymotics, Shure and Ultimate Ears. If you can add another $50, I'd recommend the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pros (the pro version have a twin driver). I had a set up until about 6 - 12 months ago and they were really good. If you can't afford to go for those, then any by the 3 I mentioned in the upper end of your price bracket should give you a pretty good sound.
Be aware though, the headphones will be limited by both the quality of the music you've ripped (I wont touch anything below 320Kbps, but prefer FLAC (not really possible on the Hero though)) and also by the Hero itself. Although, from my occasional use, I don't find the Hero all that bad a music player. I stress I only use it occasionally though, normally I have my dedicated MP3 player with me.

Yeah, I'm not too worried about the sound quality. That is, I care - but I'm not an audiophile. I'm more after the noise isolation as I ride a lot of public transportation and walk through cities.
I didn't want it to plug into the usb port because then I can't charge and listen at the same time. Some how, the included headphones are able to control the music/phone through the 3.5mm jack. I'm surprised there are no "aftermarket" buds that can do that?

As to headphones, take a look at the Shure SE110, I'm a big fan of Shure and had their entry level headphones about 4 years ago, really liked them then and have steadily upgraded since.

I tried iPhone 3GS headphone also, but it can only Play/Pause, but the mic doesn't work!!!!
I have another expensive one, Beats by Dr. Dre-Tours In-Ear headphones, it's the same as iphone headphone, mic doesn't work also.
I thought it problably because there's problem with my hero, but then, I tried the hero headphone....without any problem.....but I just don't like it!!!!

As stupid as it sounds, I can't find any headphones that work with my xperia. I just tried my apple in-ear w/ remote and they "work" except you can tell that the sound is off because they don't go all the way in.
I'm determined to use the headphones though, so what should I do?
Have you tried anything else apart from the cRapple ones?

The $100 apple headphone are quite good actually, and basically everything I've tried with the 4 pin connector doesn't work. 3 pin is hit and miss.

As far as I remember only Samsung and SE 4 Pin ones are fully interchangeable.
My friend who is an Apple fanboy thought his $100 headphones were good as well, that's until he tried my headsets. I have an Older much cheaper Creative EP -630 headset and also a newer earphone section of my SE HPM-77 (it's plug is actually fastport as it was designed for the Xperia Pureness, but you can separate the two) Anyways, those headphones coupled with the standard Xperia 3.5 Cable sound brilliant! Also much cheaper than the Apple variant. Needless to say, he was rather pissed he spent that much for his.
My advice to you, buy a new headset like the creative ones or sennheiser cx300 Which are identical. You could also use a standard 4 pin Xperia cable that has a normal 3 pin out and you wont have any problems (the kind that come with the X1 and X2). If you don't have one, they are pretty cheap on eBay (it comes complete with the OEM headphones as well).

Ironically I have had Senn CX300s and CX500s and wasn't a big fan of either. I might try the 500s again I only gave them up because they got stolen (who steals in ear headphones anyway?)
But anyway, what I'd like is a 4 pin barrel that fits the Xperia so I can make an adaptor for my apple headphones. Surprising the buttons on the headset seem to work, unfortunately it sounds like garbage due to not fitting though.

I have these too - they're great and have a low bass freq. too. (Creative EP-630)
I want to buy ultimate ears headset with built in microphone. Does anyone if they would work with x10 mini ? It says works with iPod, iPhone, MP3 players.
I'm guessing not, as the X10mini/pro headset has extra connectors on the side (hence the keyhole shaped earphone socket)
If you can try before you buy that would be your best bet. Ive tried many that wont play sound out of the headphones much less use the mics. It seems like A LOT of headphones especially ones with mics don't work with the phone.

It all depends on the wiring standard thats used on the TRRS mini jack..
I think this is how it is on the X10 (and also iPhone, HTC, Blackberry etc..)
1 Tip Left Audio Out
2 Ring 1 Right Audio Out
3 Ring 2 Ground
4 Sleeve Microphone Input\answer button
I know Nokia have pin 3 and 4 swapped around so wont work with the X10, and there may be more out there but I think most are trying to standardise to the above setup.. so you shouldn´t have too much trouble finding a headset to work with the X10 (just stay away from Nokia)
(the extra bits next to the mini plug are just for powering the SE portable speakers and other SE crap you will be able to buy.. nothing to do with headsets)

It doesn´t. The original SE headset that came with my X10 mini pro has absolutely normal connector (despite the fact that the socket on the X10 mini pro is keyhole shaped), and no functionality is lost.

Ahh, ok then. The headset that came with my X10mini (MH810) has the extra connectors, but also has an inline control (play/pause, next, prev, vol +/-), so perhaps the extra connectors drive those
Does anyone know a good headset like the MH810 that has music control and mic but also with removable headphones (normal mini jack)? would be nice to use over ear headphones in winter.. (was thinking of going for the MW600 BT, but would be happy with wired if anyone knows a good one?) needs to be able to change headphones.

Looks like they come with a bunch of adaptors (to cater for all devices, even Nokia who went with a weird TRRS setup) so they should work on the mini.
I'm also pretty sure anything that will work for the iphone will work on the mini (same TRRS configuration) .. but I haven't tested this (it would certainly make it easier for us to find headsets) someone must have an iphone headset available to try out? so many sheep out there with those devices... (I'm living on the other side of the world at the moment to all my iphone junky friends so I can't test it myself )

weird.. I was pretty sure the pin outs were the same as iPhone (according to various sites I looked at) shows you can't believe everything you read on the intertubes! bloody sony! I guess the best thing would be to find a SE headset with mic/control and stereo headphone socket.. then you can use any headphones.. the only SE ones I have seen are for the old style (hot port?) plug like the K850/W800 etc.. I haven't seen one with a normal TRRS plug yet I just got a MW600 BT set so I can use some decent headphones over BT but would be nice to find a wired option too.
BTW apart from the song titles and caller id not showing up on the MW600 the sound quality is pretty amazing, and it auto switches from listening to music from the X10mini to Skype calls from the laptop, and visa versa.. and on Ubuntu too! sweeeeeet!

SE marketing claims about 10 hours Playtime/talk time and 520hrs standby! ... I only just unboxed mine yesterday so time will tell what the real world figures are.. (I mostly use it for music and not much for calls.. I hate looking like a **** talking to myself in public, but if I am driving, on the bike or skiing then headsets are o.k
I think full charge is a couple of hours.. and it comes with a wall charger (550mA) so thats my new phone charger next to the bed (as the Amperage delivered is better for the phone than the 850mA stock one) and it means the USB cable can stay with the laptop for charging both phone and headset when I'm traveling.
I'm pretty happy with the headset so far.. and if I eventually replace the X10 with something that supports track id and caller id over bluetooth.. then woot!

I have tried two iphone headsets they DO NOT work with mini. A lot of headsets don't in my experience. I wish the iphone headset worked because I like it more than the headset that came with the mini.
It actually doesnt even recognize them at all when you plug them in it continues to play sounds/music from the speaker.

Basically I want iphone headset style that works on the mini.
The problem with iphone headsets in the X10mini is the Ground and Mic wire on the plug is opposite... so there is no ground wire for the headphones or mic, this means no sound can come out.
to make an adapter all you would have to do is chop the end off an old headset (either Sony or Iphone) with a few inches of cable to play with..
work out with a multimeter which pins are which cables T(tip)-R(ring)-R(ring)-S(sleeve) and solder on a TRRS socket (available from most good electronics shops) with the last Ring and the Sleeve reversed. (remember its tricky to solder this type of cable.. you need to scrape off some of the coloured insulation with a sharp knife or razor blade so the solder sticks to the bare copper)
if this is too difficult then buy a TRRS socket and TRRS plug from you electronics store and a piece of 4 core cable and join them (swapping the last Ring and Sleeve around)
I have seen the finished adaptors for sale online for about $15-$20 USD (might be worth the investment if you are not good with a soldering iron)

I had some hp headphones that used a seperate jack for the mike and they work perfectly with my mini pro as do all of the headphones I've tried it with.
But they might be different as the pro's headset that comes with no media controls except a button that will pause it.

I have been using the NC Headset that comes with the phone and am thinking about moving over to iPhone very soon. The headset and NC all together is the only reason that's holding me back from making the jump. I'm asking if any there any other headphones that have the same similar style that also have NC enabled that would work on an 3 pole connection enabled device?

Yep, just Google noise canceling in ear headsets, and you should be good to go. Just remember that they require a separate battery (and all the troubles that come with those), and will have an extra brick on the wire!
Got my Sony Dnc and Walkman Mdr nc33.. Much better than Sony with extension cable
