How to disable/pass protect recovery mode? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Thx

Looks like there is known method then. Don't tell me I need to physically remove the volume buttons to disable it.

Hi @sunlight98.
Which tablet is it?
Search for Philz CWM Custom Recovery, it has a protection.
Thank me, by hitting the Thanks Button!

To be flat out honest. There is no fool proof way to get around it unless you find a way to lock your bootloader with your own key. Other then that there are always ways around the locks. Many people have been looking for this for a while. It's the only thing that would make a stolen phone completely useless, but other then locked bootloader there has never been a solution.

I see. So Android is really designed for single user environment, if anyone has physical device access, software protection will not help.

Pretty much.

In that case I need to search for tablets that don't have built-in wifi, does anyone know a good discussion board for this kind of question?

You will be very hard pressed to find that. Just about all of them now have wifi as without them they are pretty useless. YOu might be able to disable wifi on a device.

hd2 n00b questions

I am purchasing an hd2 that has a non-responsive touch screen (not cracked/broken) from someone off of craigslist. I'm willing to take a chance and hope i'm lucky enough that it's not a complete hardware issue 'cause I obviously won't have any warranty.
My question(s) are:
Can you navigate through the phone and within the apps itself using only the physical buttons?
If I try to replace a digitizer with the ones on ebay for 30-40, do these need soldering? Has anyone had any success trying these? I'm aware that may not completely resolve the issue.
Will t-mobile (my carrier) provide me with an unlock code?
If I flash it with android do all the features of the phone work? WiFi, sound, camera, etc?

As Samsamuel said no there is no navigation buttons on the HD2, you have to use the touch screen.

I have not checked out the digitizers you refered to on Ebay but I would suggest you buy a LCD digitizer assembly already together tbat requires no soldering. This will allow one much easier instalation and replace both major parts that have to work to solve your problem. So you should be assured you will fix the problem.

Yes if you are currently a T-Mobile costumer they will must likely give you the unlock code, but you have to contact them.

Yes on just about all NAND Andriod ROMs for the HD2 have everything functioning with only very minor things being buggy.

i find this kind of odd. most electronics used to be configured where if you couldn't access the primary input there was always a secondary option...kind of like how if your mouse wasnt working, you can still do everything with a keyboard. granted, this isn't in the same category but engineering has definitely fallen off in the way of profits as opposed to proper functionality these days.
i came across this piece of software called 'mymobilizer' which lets you control and see the device and its screen from a computer. i installed but i can't connect because it requires an authentication on the device (press ok to allow or cancel to deny) and i was hoping the home, windows, or call key would act as an enter but unfortunately no. that would have at least given me some kind of flexibility to at least play around with it in it's current state and i was so close yet so far...
are there any other softwares just like this?

^ here's an example of what i'm referring to.
i dont think (or hope) that it needs a new lens since it looks to be in good shape and the t-mobile US HD2s digitizers don't require soldering from what i've been reading so is it a matter of simply unplugging it from the ribbon or what have you and inserting/plugging the replacement back in?
are there any good guides that focus just on the screen/digitizer disassembly and replacement? I saw that one video on youtube but it's not really a great step by step tutorial.

i currently only have a 1gb sd card on me, is it possible to install android from a card with that little capacity? i was reading one where the minimum requirement was 4gb.
If you buy the one on craiglist I wouldn't worry about SD card size as with a dead screen you won't be doing much with it except for use as door wedge perhaps.
dead screens are normally a hardware issue stripping the HD2 is not the simplest plus eBay screen parts are cheap poor quality junk.
If buyining a used HD2 you need to buy a good one & preferably a revision moel with the yellow reset button.

Yeah I agree have traded functionality for profits to a certain extent. And I agree not having any kind of control with any external buttons is a drag, bit it is a all touch screen device. The link you posted shows a LCD and digitizer wich is what I was talking about and yes this kind is the solderless kind that just plugs into the mainboard. I personally have not done it but I have read about people that have and watch a video or two.
As far as a spacific video to watch I really don't have one to suggest but seach YouTube really good you should find something that will help you out.
Now on the SD card I would get atleast a 2GB to 4GB.
The link is just the digitizer.

[Q] Need to unroot and remove Cyanogenmod for warranty repair

Hello all. I'm hoping someone can give me some tips here.
My Xperia z2 tablet has a cracked screen which is apparently serviceable under the seller's warranty, but I need to make it so that the original firmware / software etc is intact. I hope that makes sense.
The tablet is rooted and is running Cyanogenmod.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks!

Sorry - I should also add that due to the screen crack, the whole right hand half of the touchscreen no longer works, which makes things harder again.

Update: I now managed to flash an FTF I downloaded so it appears Cyanogenmod is gone, but unfortunately it's in Russian (I think) and I can't read the setup menus - or press the 'next' button, which is in the bottom right of the touchscreen.
Maybe you should try some sort of remote control software like VNC?

[Q] Driving mode

Forgive me if I have missed this somewhere. But, I really need this feature if it exists somehow. On my old note 2.. There was a feature called driving mode. The phone would read aloud text and notify you of incoming calls/texts. You could then speak commands to phone without touching it. I don't see any way to do this with this phone unless you have a BT headset connected. I can't stand headset's. If there is no solution. I will. If there is another way and you know. Please tell me. Its the one thing I really miss. Thanks
So all these views. No one has any ideas?

Driving Mode is something that Samsung came up with. Other phones don't have it. You can get some of the functions that you want in other apps but not the actual Driving Mode. Search and you may find something. Here is something to try but it may not work, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.arnab.drivingmode&hl=en.
Thanks

Thanks for reply. i was able to find a couple of apps that are similar to samsungs. Did not realize that was a thing with them only. Shame. Its a damn handy thing to have. I hope one of these will work.
In case anyone needs an app that works with our phone. Look up one named New Car Mode in play store. Works perfect.

Hacked by a phone call mythbust

Hello XDA community
A friend of mine with an android device has been hacked "by a phone call" has he said. The phone number of the believed "attacker" does not exist anymore and seemed to have existed only a few hours. This arose some questions about what I believed. Can some of you tell me what you think about the questions below. If you have some pointers to help me know more about these topics, I would appreciate. If I missed topics on xda forum regarding these questions, please forgive me, and points me to the topic I missed.
1st - Has he really been hacked by a phone call ? In my understanding, as long as you don't activate 3G/4G, your android is just a phone, and thus can just handle duplex audio data. What about exploit targeting the phone application that, with just GSM protocol or payload corruption, can hack your phone ? I thougt this fairly unprobable. Now if 3G/4G is activated, is phone is just a machine on the network, with some ports open, so he is vulnerable. What about exploit that could run over 3G if you accept a call ? Can a vulnerable phone apk enable a hacking of the phone receiving a phone call ?
2nd - How did the attacker procured a phone number without giving its ID papers in france ? Buying a sim card normaly require a valid ID paper like a passport. Is it always the case ? Is it possible to have a mobile phone number without buying a SIM card ?
3rd - Given the recent informations I google on internet, I guess he has been hacked by Stagefright.
As he rooted his device, I would avised him reset to factory device. As a paranoid, I would say this is unsufficient : if his phone is compromised, the attacker could have compromised his recovery too. So I would better say him : flash bootloader if possible, and flash a stock rom then boot into recovery. And after, rune an apk to test if vulnerable to stagefright and a patch to correct.
Than you for your answers
Hi
First I'm sorry that this happened to your friend.
1. In Switzerland, many people was also hacked by a phone call. But he/she only stoled user data (Photos/Music/Videos/etc.) If they had Mobile Data enabled, I don't know.
2. Some country's (like Portugal) hasn't number that are registered with the name of the person. You can simply go to a mobileshop and ask for a SIM-Card and they simply sell it to you (I know it's a really bad thing )
Good luck to your friend restore his phone

You can walk into just about any side store km the states and buy a phone and reg it with any name you want. You would be amazed at the names people use for accounts. Some just leave it blank.

Interesting. Im sure you could find away around it if you try hard enough. Which is what he most likely did.
Now When you say someone hacked his phone, how does he know he was hacked? What are the issues that made him think so?

Yes, probably. I saw a video from a tech university with the POC on how to cheaply buy phone numbers to issue SMS campaign, I don't know if this is still applicable.

I had a short conversation with him, and he described applications installing alone, sms sent from his phone... Since I still could not get my hands on the device itself, I agree there is still a doubt on that point. He just remembered a strange phone call some weeks ago, but I am not convinced by the phone call that hacked his phone.

To be honest I am as well. Things that he is talking about could not have been set up during a phone call. Unless the person gave enough info that the offender could have hacked into the account. This would allow install of apps. I have a feeling it is something else. A logcat will be able to help determine what is the issue but the best bet is a full wipe, flash and some password changes.

I agree. I think the call has nothing to do with the symptoms he observes... I did not took time to POC stagefright at home, but from what I read it can be done silently via MMS. It's one hypothessis. ATM there ar many. Still don't have news from him. I'll just wait now.

In my experience with Nessus or Nexpose, a vulnerability scan cannot be assessed as a POC. Not being vulnerable certainly prove your immnunity, but the opposite is not true.

Help to make the right choice

Hi guys.
First of all, I have searched the forum, and also used google, but most of info is not fresh and is not really complete. So please excuse me in advance if I"m asking a question that is partially asked before.
And Please before you reply, I ask you even, I beg you please only reply if you have a constructive informative things to say. Please dont come with sarcasm etc... This is a very serious thing for me.
My project :
Have a android phone for only 1 APP and with Only VPN / TOR connection. So Basicly imagine a android phone that has only 1 app. When that app is in use, communicating it comunicates true vpn maybe TOR.
This phone will not be used for anything alse. Only 1 APP. The APP is a VOIP app, so it will make calls true a external server. The internet will be on the simcard, simcard will be used wich has no Telephony services but only internet services on it. So it must be really basic, not to cheap not to expensive. No other apps will be used. Actually if possible all apps will be removed. and will be locked down, so you can only start, unlock, start app call / recieve calls. turn of.
Now, the Questions
1. What is the most Secure Android ROM, that would work on most / many android phones.
1.1. I want to LOCK the rom / android completely after install and setup settings, sothat nobody can install anything anymore.
1.2. The rom must be light, sothat it's fast and also not to heavy on the battery.
1.3. Posibilities to add extra options like self distruct if 3 times wrong unlock code is entered, like Iphone.
2. What phone would you recommend to do this job, Please keep in mind, it should be not to small, sothat it's nice to use. sits nice in the hand of a grownup person.
Nobody ?
So... No reply at all ))
I did a little research, found out i can strip down the firmware, just build it / rebuild it from source or just make some edition, I'd still like to hear / read some advice about wich phone model to take.
If you are gonna build from source then your best option is a nexus. Other wise you will end up having issues with device trees and kernel source.
As for locking it down well that's another matter. As long as they could get access to the device there is more way to stop them completely.

Thanks for your reply / info.
for the lockdown, it's more like anti kids lockdown, sothat users cannot install just what ever they want. But I think it will be more advanced than that.
I'm planing to make a clean, light, firmwar that will :
1. have only 2 ways of comunicated. 1. Secure VOIP 2. secure chat system like tox or something.
2. will comunicate only true VPN or TOR
3. Will be locked down after initial setup. meanin will not be possible to install anything, just set options like wifi etc... no apstores.
4. Will have self distruct software, that counts how many times wron pin / screen unlock is done, if more then 2-3 will completely wipe itself to empty device.
5. by default camera, gps, proximity, will be absent, so will be removed in ROM, so will be really not functional.
sofar
tomorrow will search for a nexus.
thanks for your advice again.

Well that depends on where you want to start. You can get an older nexus where all the code is pretty much there for stuff and learn that way. Or get a newer one where things are still being changed around. Let me give you one warning. With ever yearly android release you pretty much have to rebate everything you did and start from square one.

I have done first tests, went with basic samsungs. s4 mini, have installed edited cyanogen, all tests went well, now testing self distruct mechanism.
