Hi all,
Since December I'm using a Redmi Note 2 Prime. I like the phone, but not a fan of Miui.
I tried one of the CM roms on here a few months ago, which was a big improvement in user experience for me. Only the poor image quality and slow focus speed was a big let down.
Is there any non-miui rom out there that equals the stock miui camera's image quality and focus speed?
Try the AOSP from vova.vafin. It is based on AOSP and has the Mediatek Camera so you won't lose any photo quality..

The photo quality will be the same, BUT You lose PDAF focus..
@tonydeli7; thanks for the suggestion, I'll have a look at the thread.
@galakty; hmm.. that's a shame. I really love the near-instant focus, crucial to capture my 2- and 4-year-old.
You can try MultiRom or Xiaomi.eu or Smiui(based on xiaomi.eu with a few tweaks)
All customs ROMs based on MIUI Stable/Developer but without Chinese bloat...and the same quality camera as stock!

Hi Tony, already running xiaomi.eu from day 1, but do not enjoy using Miui one bit.
Still can't find anything in the Settings menu. (Rant on: Why the h×ll are half the SIM settings hidden away under 'Privacy' in 'Additional Settings'? Why are the most used settings hidden under 'Additional Settings' as well? Why is Wireless Display' hidden under 'More' in ' Network', instead of 'Display'? Why do the pull-down notifications and power toggles take up 2 full HD screens, and still need scrolling to reach all toggles? Why can't I delete never used toggles? Rant off)
The list goes on, but generally I need to swipe & tap twice as much to get things done compared to Aosp or Cm.
The CM roms haven't made any progress regarding camera, and probably won't for the forseable future. I had a go at sMiui yesterday, but despite trimming most unused Miui stuff it used an extra 250MB compared to regular Miui (might be an error on my side though). Will try vova.vafin's Aosp rom tonight. See how I like the camera and overall user experience/stability.
I can say I'm on the same boat because I prefer AOSP..but until Xiaomi releases the kernel source,we will not have one that works like on Nexus phones. There is a trick to run the original android settings but they don't fully work :/
The ROM from vova.vafin is AOSP based on CM I think but he uses libraries from the MIUI for the camera. And also he is not using the stock camera but a camera named Mediatek Camera that is specially made for phones/tablets running MTK processors. I used it for one day just to test, the battery was almost close to stock and I didn't notice any change in camera quality. You might give it a try
Yeah, running the rom since early this evening, just doing the final tweaks in gravity box. So far it's looking good.
i've tried many roms, camera quality almost the same at all roms

I agree. Rom with best camera quality, except of course miui, right now, is vova's.
The BEST camera for sure.
Is this possible to port it at bules rom? Or just extract it and make it work somewhere else????
miui 6.4.14 with better camera
Miui of course has the best camera. We talk for custom roms here....

Ok so a couple of things.
I noticed any camera app on a TW rom has what I would describe as graining, I can see pixels constantly changing colour akin to watching a analolue tv signal. If I take photos this affects the photo also. It affects how clear the photo is, I have a photo of an object on my desk eg. that looks brilliant taken whilst was on AOKP. Will try to attach the photos to this post. On the camera on the AOKP rom, this graining is gone, its vanished. (shame the camera app is unstable). Taking a photo of the same object using any camera app on a TW rom has a much less satisfying result. It would seem whatever that driver is thats used on AOSP roms it does offer better quality. Or is it a setting that causes the graining?
Also a few times when usng the camera, it just closes itself, if I am right this is a rom problem? what would cause that behaviour usually? The closing itself only is happening since I switched back to neatrom, so may end up posting this 2nd question in the neatrom thread.

a update
I took a photo at lower res (as was too big) and then accidently seen all the graining was gone and picture clear again.
so it seems lowering the resolution of the photo does wonders.
so its related to higher pixel count and it appears, obviously one might say the lower resolution hides the problem, possibly. so eg. zooming on on a my 0.8mp 1024x768 picture so its same screen size as the 8mp pic has much higher detail.
I will if time restore my aokp nandroid and test 8pm photos again if I can.
I attached 2 pics, the usb_back is 8mp other is 0.9mp.
I've never seen what you refer to. Generally the tw camera is better quality because samsung didn't release their camera HAL source so its quality can't be reproduced
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 4
I put AOKP back on for more testing, showed some freinds and they picked out all AOKP pics as clearly better, extra options in the app (jpeg quality and more focus options as well as special affects) and the quality is simply better full stop.
the TW cam got ported for AOSP anyway.
so just flash the TW cam and u got the same quality. (theme / addons section in this forum)

where is it? and i want aosp on tw not other way round the tw camera gui is aweful so even if quality fixed i wouldnt like using it.
i brought a professional camera app which a few on here reccomended, great improvement over tW interface but imo not as good as AOSP interface and it closes by itself a lot. It also doesnt fix the quality issue and when I run the app on AOSP the quality is fixed so the quality seems related to the samsung camera driver not app.

since I put siyah kernel on the AOKP rom the camera is stable. Might be coincidence but thats the situation at the moment.
well now nothing to fix on the quality.
on the latest 4.1.2 neatrom, the camera quality is good so was an issue with md4 build I guess.
Hey guys, I was wondering, how do you compare stock camera vs camera on AOPS (eg: cyanogemmod).
People say that it is way better on stock roms, why? I have a question, if it is better is it only because of the camera APP? So that flashing stock camera app on cyanogem or just using camera zoom fx would take AOSP to Stock level?
thx

No. The problem is with the drivers as far as I understand. The camera in AOSP will never be as good as stock. You can not interchange the camera apps between AOSP ans Samsung base due to different frameworks. You can use 3rd party camera apps for more functionality but it will not solve the basic camera bugs...or picture quality.

As mentioned previously, the stock camera app will always be better.
Its on you whether you bare with tw but a better camera or go aosp
Yes, stock camera is better... Does that mean AOSP camera is crap? Absolutely not!
AOSP camera suits the needs of the causal shooter pretty well... If you need something more professional you shouldn't be using a phone camera anyway.
TW camera was what kept me from switching to AOSP for a long time, so I decided to make a few tests with a friend, we took the same pics (him with AOSP and me with TW) and compared the results (unfortunately i can't post those comparison pics as i don't have them anymore).
We couldn't find any big differences, and the few we found weren't that important for me.
3rd party apps can produce nice results also, my current camera of choice is A Better Camera, the interface is a bit outdated but I am happy with the quality and features. AOSP is so much better than TW in so many ways that it compensates for the "lesser" quality in the pics.
But don't let me or anyone else tell you what to use, try it for yourself.
As jmvelazquezr, I did the same test a few days ago and the difference is minimal.
The main problem with AOSP camera right now, is that it's buggy (problems with flash and focus). Video recording seems to offer lower quality too, specially the sound.

Try: Focus or Cyanogenmod camera app, they're pretty similar but I prefer CMcamera.

Will never happen. As source for this has never been released by Samsung. Has been this way for ALL custom ROMs since ever. The camera is the main reason I keep going back to stock. Focus is horrible on pretty much all custom ROMs. But because of major security flaws in stock OS I'll be switching back to CM.
Maybe auto focus is terrible but manual is damn good for macros. I used to make macros of smartphone motherboards, mostly after water damage to show clients that they phones wasn't stop working just by themselves. I can tell You on stock pictures from my phone was a lot worse than my coworker iPhone 5 and now they are a lot sharper and brighter than on his iPhone. I never tested outside photos on CM but I think it's only matter to feel manual focus.
Snap on CM11
Also using 12.1 on s4 mini, I've tried all cameras but have settled on Snap Camera HDR. Focuses fast and accurately, and doesn't lag. Also works well in lower light.
I just came back from CM 12.1 to CM11 in my S4 Mini Duos and switched to snap Camera HDR. Far better than built in CM11 camera app. The only thing I miss is the capturing with on/off button...
I use A Better Camera
Google Camera is pretty fast.
I've settled on A Better Camera (running on CM12.1) as I like layout etc., admittedly auto focus is not as good as CM app in some lighting conditions but a quick tap on the screen and it will focus perfectly.
Try the Ucamera application.
It is very good and it has many effects. It s available on play store
Google Camera is a pretty good choice.
It is not so simple. You can not have the same quality stock cam because any cam app is working with generic drivers in CMs or any other ROM CM based . For the same reason , the audio (mostly capture) also will never have the same quality.
It is a price to pay: Camera and audio quality worse.
Some apps can even do a good job, but difficult to achieve equal quality.
Until the other day I used CM13 and even liked, but needed quality to scan a document on an emergency. I had to restore Stock Backup. I lost the desire to again change the ROM and stayed in Stock. Unfortunately it is a reality.
Some apps can even do a good job, but difficult to achieve equal quality.
One consolation is to use some Xposed Modules and other tools that make Stock ROM ... Less outdated, I would say.

Well, yeah, but stock based ROMs are slow. And the issues cannot be resolved, you can only apply a .zip that will increase the speaker volume, but the quality is horrible. Anyway, it's about G5 and whether it suffers from the same problems on CM because I don't want another phone that takes a few secs to display recent apps (stock) or takes potato quality pictures (CM).

CM works very well IMO. NFC (and probably WIFI tethering) don't work, but everything else does.
The call quality is OK, but the picture quality is not as good as with stock. But since LG does not help the developers by releasing the blobs, I am glad that it works at all.
I can live with the camera on CM, but your mileage may vary - I'm not a foto freak.

In fact I've owned every galaxy 1-7. .Note 3 and 4....G2 G3 and 4.....moto x pure.....the v10 and NONE of them are as fast as this phone......That's why I can't justify the shortcomings that CM has on this phone even though on all other phones I prefer CM and really want to use it for the theme engine alone.....but I just can't......stock is way too damn smooth.

I have to agree that stock on the g5 is actually pretty smooth, runs really good and gets great battery life especially with a few tweaks (greenify and couple others). But CM runs pretty well now too although still a few things not working and couple things not as good as stock. Camera quality is good with CM although much better on stock, that will probably always be the case with lg. Also miss some things like lg dialer that has video call built in and lg gallery app that to me is better but it all depends on what you want to do. If you're more interested in camera quality and everything working including decent speed and battery life stay on stock and just root and do your custom mods, if you want a lighter OS and ability to customize more and are okay with a couple things not working for now use CM. Also I've always preferred cm based roms on every device especially g2 but with this I'm torn between stock and cm, although currently using cm as daily driver. Maybe if dual boot ever works with t mobile version i can have both.

I totally agree with you. This is the first phone id choose stock over CM or any other aosp Rom for that matter....its just so fast and in actuality I had more hiccups on CM with the touch randomly freezing for a few seconds or delaying......and part of the reason i got this phone is for the camera quality to take pictures of my kids......if I could keep that on CM id probably go to CM because I love the themes. No theming on stock sure does get old quick.

I think the touch freezing issues were with the first build as I've been running cm for a couple weeks now without any touch issues but camera quality just isn't the same as stock. Also there is some modding you can do on stock (g4 tweaks box, gravity box, build.prop edits and probably more, although not the same as cm ... ) Like I said before maybe if dual boot gets support for h830 we could have both then.
Thanks for the opinions, guys. I still gotta see it irl, but this might be a good choice.

I wonder just how much better the camera actually really is on stock though. I would like to know that. The major difference I seen is that it takes longer to actually snap a pic on CM.
The Cyanogenmod ROM on the G5 is great. There are problems still with the mobile hotspot and NFC, but other than that it's great
i dont need NFC (for what?) and the mistakes in Tethering... can wait
for me i hope the touch issue when Ambient Display enabled and open phone with Fingerprint is the badest Bug we have
But rest works fine and i'm happy to have Custom Rom was CM based.

I think it takes about same amount of time maybe tiny bit longer to take picture in cm but not big deal. I think biggest thing would be if you used the manual mode as i don't think there's a way of doing that on cm, but not sure. Otherwise cameras pretty similar.

Both stock and cm are great options. Stock is smooth with good battery life and cm is very customizable with not as good battery life. I've been using cm ever since they fixed the camera not working when cm first came out, but have since switched over to RR which is still cm based but way more customization. I'm happy with cm wish battery life was better and miss built in video call feature stock has but everything has tradeoffs. Anyways I recommend doing nandroid and trying cm or RR and see what you like better.
I'm in a dilemma between Moto G4 Plus and Xiaomi Redmi Note 4.
In every single detail I like Redmi Note 4 better except for camera and Software. The camera difference is not an issue for me but software is.
1. Moto provides stock android which I love very much due to its simplicity and stability.
2. I find MIUI annoying.
So, I'd like to know if there is a stable ROM that can give me stock android experience on Redmi Note 4. If there is such a ROM,
1. How stable is it? Can it be at par with the software experience stock android on Moto G provides?
2. Performance of the ROM compared to factory

Try Lineage AEX, RR, AICP (last three are official)
minor bugs are there: yello flash light, slow motion camera not working but lightweight faster AOSP stick rom.
I have not tried yet Slim (official) also better!
Every custom ROM will give you bugs and a decrease in camera quality.
You can try a debloated version of MIUI from xiaomi.eu with a custom launcher like Nova.
Here is how it looks my phone
I had the same reservation about switching to a Miui phone.
However, I run stock Miui rom with Nova Launcher and could not be happier.
Stock rom provides stability and no deterioration to camera, Nova provides stock Android experience.
My personal experience suggests that no custom built rom is bug free. Try to use the rom provided originally by the manufacturer and modify it to suit to your needs by changing the launcher. I toggle between Google and Nova launcher as per mood. However you need to suitable turn on the auto wake functions for some widgets like the digital clock (need to download separately), notification badges etc.
Yes I do wish that Xiaomi should give the option of choosing either a stock android rom or its Miui rom. My personal preference would be the simple, but effective stock android rom (I base this on the experience of Moto g3 I had previously. In retrospect I am amazed the way motorola has integrated the software and hardware so effectively. Despite of high ram and octa core processor, I am disappointed by the software + hardware performance of the note 4, even my wife complains about the software and speed of the MI Max she has after shifting from the Moto X Play)
Problem like yellow flash, slow motion DOES exist on MIUI rom...
The latest stable MIUI rom is very problematic for so many users, many find gps sucks, battery sucks, device lags, etc after the update...
I never got this issue when using AospExt, LOS or PA.
for me... MIUI sucks, period...
I would not buy xiaomi device if there is no option for other ROMs like LOS, RR, PA, etc...

I used Moto G before and really love vanilla android provided by Motorola. The moment I got my RN4, I try to adapt with MIUI. However, I'm getting a lot of gps issues while using it. I end up switching to Slim rom which give me almost the same experience that I had with my old Moto G.
Plus note, no gps issue when using Slim rom. Working as expected.
The advantage of redmi note4x is that it's a good battery. The battery capacity of 4000 mah is very large. And the qualcomm snapdragon 625 processor is a 14nm process, so the heating life is really strong. But there are drawbacks: the camera and the level of photography are not mediocre; Screen quality is general. Using long eyes can make you feel uncomfortable. I don't know if that's the case, but at least my phone is. Finally, the MIUI system is very bloated. If you like native android, I suggest you buy the MOTO. But note4x is a cost-effective option

Its not a bug for me.
I'm not focused on this. Photos and videos quality are sufficient for an occasional use.

How do you get every notifications?
I clean flashed the last global rom and I have feeling, that I still dont get all the notifications instantly.
Whatsapp/Messenger works, but apps like eBay, forums etc. seem not to work every time.
Have you made any changes to apps, or you made some battery saver modifications or something?
