I was planning on rooting my Note from ATT and have been reading around on rooting software and read that I need a specific kernal, as in:
2.6.35.7-N7000XXKJ4-CL641703
Kernel KJ1
Kernel KJ4
Kernel KJ6
Kernel KK1
Kernel KKA
Kernel KK9
My phone only gives me kernal version 2.6.35.11 and nothing else. Can i change this to find the "actual" version?
Not sure where you are getting your info, but the only two root methods for AT&T Note are in the AT&T Note development forums and they don't require anything but an AT&T Note.

Hey Galaxy SII people, I need some help with a friend's SII.
I'm quite knowledgeable with custom ROMs and recoveries, but I have no idea what to do with a stock phone.
The phone is rooted and not getting the OTA to ICS. I want to get the OTA, losing root not necessarily a problem.
Can someone give me a hand with this? I have no idea what I need to do.
The phone also has the stock recovery.
I apologize if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find a conclusive, comprehensive answer.
Go to samfirmware and download the update firmware and install it via odin.
All the best.

Flash stock ROM from http://samfirmware.com/ via Odin. Search for galaxy S2 ROMs, just make sure you don't download the dangerous ROMs (the ones with a warning triangle next to them).

Thanks for the quick reply.
I'm downloading a zip now. I flash this with Odin/Heimdall? I thought I needed a .tar and a bunch of other files to flash with Odin.
This won't keep root, right? Is there any way I could get root back after flashing?
Also, will this wipe /data?
Oh, and I have the option to download a ROM for a specific carrier. Does that mean I can't use another carrier?
Edit: While I'm at it, is the stock recovery needed for anything stock ROM related?
Yes download will be in the form of a zip file, once downloading is complete you can extract the tar. file and place in the PDA section of odin. This will not wipe your device, well never has done for me. Yes you will loose root as you have a completely new rom with stock kernel. See the guide for rooting your chosen firmware. As for the carrier i always use the unbranded /open version as this has less bloat ware. All the best.

Make sure you don't have repartition button ticked or play with the pit file if you don't 100% know what you're doing either

I originally rooted my S3 using cf-root 6.3. I've since upgraded to a custom JellyBean ROM (Wanam Lite). Should I now be using cf-root 6.4? If so, do I simply use ODIN to install it over the previous version? What are the differences between the two versions?
Is there a changelog? It's probably just updated versions of superuser and the root APKS etc.
If you are already rooted then you don't need to flash anything.

What method did you use to root?
Odin and a .tar file?
Or?

I can not find the thread for the guide I used to root my i747.
However, I did use Odin like the video; but just flashed a stock TouchWiz ROM with root injected. I then installed TWRP recovery (better than CWM imo) through the GooManager app from the Play Store. (Requires root obviously.)
Then I flashed whatever ROM I so desired.
I had no issues with IMEI, however it does show I have 3G data on Synergy ROM rc484. Sometimes switches to HSPDA+.
I have only had this issue on this particular ROM.
I can send you a link for the stock ROM w root for flashing in Odin through a PM, just msg me.
Or try this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2042775

Hi there,
I've been a member of XDA Developers for a couple of years now, and have found a lot of useful info when I was thinking of rooting my HTC Desire back in the day :good:
Now I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 and want to root it and explore ROMS, root apps etc, but I haven't got a clue as to how to root it the safest way without fear of bricking the device.
I'm aware of SuperOneClick, SRSroot and Odin (I'm feared of using Odin as for me this has the greatest risk if I do something wrong)
I can't seem to find the correct .tar file to use with Odin because I cant find any that match my phone settings.
I feel like a douchebag not knowing! I need some assistance from the pros.
Her are my Specs
Model No. GT-I9100P
Android Version 4.0.4
Baseband I9100PBVLPB
Kernel Version [email protected]#3 SMP PREEMPT Wed Dec 26 23:40:43 KST 2012
Build No. IMM76D.BVLPE
I had found some info that suggested using Siyah-s2-v5.0.1.tar along with Odin to achieve root but I don't know.
I send you thanks in advance and apologies if this is in the wrong section or has previously been answered
Regards

Hey man. I'm on orange in the UK too and Odin is the best way. Find a jb ROM on samfirmware and follow the instructions. Then find a rooted kernel, flash it with Odin and play away. After that you'll be able to flash whatever you want.

Hi fella, see this thread....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877270
It's a whole list of rooted stock kernels with CWM that can be flashed via the stock recovery.
There are Odin flashable versions, but the versions you would choose from would be the "zip" versions...
Edit....just noticed you have an I9100P....I don't think those kernels will work...
Sent from my Rooted, De bloated Stock JB powered S2 via PhilZ kernel and Tapatalk 2....
Just rechecked that thread....there are a couple of I9100P kernels there, but they're for JB firmwares....
To be honest, I noticed in your OP that you said you are on ICS 4.0.4. ...
You REALLY need to move far away from 4.0.4 as fast as possible. That particular ics version is known for the emmc super brickbug. So if it's possible, you need to ota or kies update to JB anyway.....then you can use the kernels in that thread to root your phone

Can you confirm whether the S2 you own is Italian?
If it is, you can download the JB firmware from here....
http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-I9100P
It's an XXLSK Firmware....this is compatible with the kernel in the thread I linked to in my earlier comment.....
But the firmware will need to be flashed via Odin (unless you get an ota or kies update first)

@keithross39:
Philz does have kernels for I9100P. But the closest one I could find for the OP was BVLPC. I wonder if it would work.
Philz has told that it is possible to use the closest kernel match if an exact match is not possible. What are you thoughts on that?

My device was updated via kies to ICS, I've recently checked kies for the official JB update but it says there isn't one available. Unsure if JB update from orange has officially been rolled out.

Ok thanks for clarifying that....but how come you have the "P" version of the phone....the little research I've done would indicate that it's not a UK version (cmiiw)

I don't know enough about kernels to speculate on the pros and cons of not exactly matching the firmware....but having said that; PhilZ is not the only dev to say that. ....Chainfire has also said something similar....if a dev of his calibre says it's ok, who am I to argue.....lol

OK I think first is to use chain fires app to check if super brick bug is present on your version if its OK then I can help tell you how to root and flash custom ROMs directly from stock recovery no PC needed.

This is a shot of my S2 specs. The handset is an upgrade from Orange when my last contract ended. As far as I'm aware its a UK model.

Your GT-I9100 is just a Orange version of the international I9100. Only difference is NFC. Most roms and kernels have support for this extra NFC feature.
Didn't know that......learnt something new today...

Thanks for all your help guys. I've decided not to root my s2 for now as I don't have a backup phone if I brick this one.
