Hello!
I've just got my OPX and I wanted to update my software (my phone is running on Android 5.1.1 and OxygenOS 2.1.2), but I couldn't find a software update button in Settings >> About phone.
Does this mean that I have to update it manually (using my PC)?
If so, can I just get the latest update or do I have to install them one by one, in chronological order?
Will there be any loss of data?
Thanks!

You would have to flash chronological, yes. I already read about the missing button here some time ago.
Just backup your stuff and flash the full 2.2.1. ROM .

Is there a way to backup my apps' settings? I don't want to configure them again.
Also, are the software updates worth installing? I didn't encounter any bugs.

Root and use Titanium Backup to restore apps' settings.
Eventually, you will encounter bugs (Shelf, Google Hangout calls). The newest version is bug-free for me and runs very smooth with a custom kernel (BluSpark).

Does rooting void the warranty? I've bought my phone from a carrier (off contract) in the EU and I have 2 years of warranty. The last time I've rooted a phone was in 2011/2012 and I remember being uncertain about the warranty.

No, with OnePlus devices it does not void the warranty. Check here: https://oneplus.net/support/answer/will-rooting-or-unlocking-the-bootloader-void-my-warranty
You really are sure you don't see System Update in Settings -> About phone? Have you tried search in Settings?

It's not there. Maybe I've disabled something I shouldn't have?
I've uploaded some screenshots.
I've updated using this: http://downloads.oneplus.net/2016-04-02/opx/OnePlus_X_OxygenOS_2.2.1/.
The update button is back and I didn't lose any data except for my contacts.

Where are the firmware update settings in Villain 5.2?

if you want to unroot your phone forever then do it. you can as well install the 2.1 RUU once it is out. it will happily stay on your hero until the display turns off for the last time...
now you just have to ask yourself why you would want to do such a terrible thing...
Haha, that's true. I plan on waiting until there's a custom 2.1 based on the official one which will allow root access, but I have a friend who will only use official firmwares for some reason.
Maybe I should steal his phone and root it without him knowing!
Hey, I'm on rogers in Canada and was having a hell of a time getting rooted 2.3.3 on my phone without unlocking the bootloader(no point in unlocking the BL for just root .... especially w/the warranty problems). I figured I'd give Working Root on 2.3.3 ! a try but had trouble finding the right firmware to downgrade to and when I tried to update OTA it kept failing after downloading and trying to install it (looked like it went all the way through the process but the phone would reboot and say "update failed").
1./ Did a clean install of the Xperia_Play_Release_Generic_UK.ftf (it's .184) with flashtool and then re-setup my apns to get 3g etc working. I downloaded the generic ftf off a thread on these forums but couldn't remember exactly which thread so I recompressed it and uploaded it to multiupload to make it a little easier to get all the needed files
2./ Rooted with Chainfire's Gingerbreak apk
3./ OTA update and it worked (before I did a clean install I was having the ota update fail, probably because I had removed a few system apps via root uninstall, I just made sure that all I did this time after the fresh install was root and then update)
Note on Gingerbreak: I've seen this exploit take 5 minutes or a few hours to grant root on devices. Be patient, if it's still hasn't worked try re-seating or swapping your memory card for a different one and try again. Also be sure you're on 2.3.2, SE patched gingerbreak in their release of 2.3.3.
[FAQ]
1./ I don't have ota updates available in my country, will this still work for me?
Answer: Yes, this installs the global firmware to your phone, after that your phone will look for global updates rather than carrier specific updates.

Answer
step 1./ google your carriers apn settings
step 2./ enter them in settings/wireless & networks/mobile network settings/Access Point Names (make sure you set up your mms apn if you want working mms as well, info for your carrier is available on google, that's where I found mine.)
step 3./ Profit
ncaissie said:
Yes you can use wi-fi. and Like I said OTA is safe it is the PC update that bricks.
Just follow those steps. It's easier than I expected.
Edit:
The things not mentioned in the OP is that you need to download a file manager to install the Gingerbreak. And you need to enable the “Unknown Sources” in the apps settings to install Gingerbreak.
After it roots it will reboot and you should see a new app called Superuser in your app list.
Then get Titanium Backup to uninstall thing you don’t want or move apps fully to the SD card. If you are not in the UK the BBC player is no good to you. I think there is a thread with a list of apps you can safely remove

If i dont do a clean install...what about the apns? Will they stay too? In my own thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14705145&postcount=4
FrAsErTaG said that i can choose to not flash the userdata. I already found the option within the Flashtool. Are my apns a part of the userdata or will they get overwritten/deleted anyway?
Edit: Forget everything. It worked
I didnt wipe anything or "clean" my system. I just did the downgrade. After that, i got 1 issue. I always got this message: "android.process.acore has stopped". Google said that this is an issue with synchronize the contacts, etc. But i didnt freak out I just installed GingerBreak, did the root, then the OTA, and after OTA everything was fine again. Now i have full rooted 2.3.3

My XPlay was originally purchased from Rogers. But since I've had it, I unlocked its network, flashed it with the Generic UK .184 firmware and Rooted it with GingerBreak v1.20. When I checked under "Settings\About phone\Software update\" and manually searched for an update, it was able to find it, download it and install it.
Sweet, Thanks
Hello all,
Since OTA updates are beginning to be pushed out, I think this issue might deserve its own thread outside of the development thread.
Has anyone received OTA updates after they've flashed their phone to a different ROM over the original ROM?
I'm currently on my original RM-821_Polkomtel_Poland_VAR242600_v2_6_Black (059R079) ROM. I would like to flash it to an unbranded German or UK ROM, but I'm afraid that might prevent OTA updates.
Thanks in advance.

Flashing a ROM from a different product code does not affect the delivery of OTA updates. OTA updates will then be based on the newly installed ROM. Meaning if you flash unbranded German ROM you will get unbranded German ROM OTA updates

yup, I can confirm it because a few days back when I flashed the german Vodafone pre-portico rom, I got the german portico update. Was originally using EE UK firmware and flashing around to see which firmware is the most stable .
P.S: I later flashed back to EE firmware and also got the EE portico update, so flashing different ROMs does not screw up the OTA system.

Not a problem : ) I just hope there isn't some sort of "flash counter" or something. I had an HTC HD2 and I was used to flashing all sorts of stuff on it. The Devs made it so that it was possible to return the phone to factory condition just in case.

The only problem when you flash other ROM is that every time you backup your phone, it will show you the backup process, but really will not save the setting and app installed and every time you want to restore your phone, you may need to install and setup everything manually unless you have the original product code install in your phone. 100 %Tested.

strange, text messaging backup works even if I flash another rom (different product code). After restore, all my stuff is inside as usual...
the sms backup is not device specific.... it's synced with your live account...

Now I updated my Z5C to MM using the Singapore FTF. As I live in Spain, wonder if there are differences between the firmwares supplied for each country, and btw is there to get the FTF file for each country.
You can flash any firmware from any country. Just use the "unbranded" or "generic" or "customised" ones for your model number. There are just different kinds of bloatwares in each region and you can uninstall them
One difference in the Dutch (NL) firmware, and possibly others, is that instead of 'LTE' and 'LTE+' in the statusbar it shows '4G' and '4G+'.

Yes! I have a Dutch (NL) phone, flashed an unbranded Lollipop FTF over it months ago (from Austria or so), and now I flashed the Marshmallow 6.0 unbranded Singapore FTF. All works fine.
Of course there might be minor problems, but those would also occur if you did a normal update. But that really depends per phone and such.
Also. Don't get scared when flashing a FTF takes 15 minutes or so and it looks like Flashtool is hanging. Especially the system.sin flashing takes a good 10 minutes. But just give it time.
Feel free to contact me if you need help.
Thanks mate.. Greatly appreciate your response

Some firmwares may disabled the VoLTE if that country/carrier doesn't has VoLTE and some VoLTE got different standard/settings too I've heard. Like if I flash the Singapore MM, my HK VoLTE probably will brick out. But other then VoLTE, everything else should work without problem.

Nordic - Bloat can be uninstalled or disabled. 4G icon, no persistent NFC icon.
I'm wondering if not being able to turn off the VoLTE Provisioning Flag in the INFO menu is specific to certain firmwares. I'm using the Singapore firmware and I can't seem to turn it off.
Hi,
I've noticed the issue and it started to annoy me
When I get the phone to landscape position it does not auto-rotate.
It was working previously, but I don't know when exactly it stopped and what could cause it.
I have tried to restart the phone, to wipe the cache partition, to restore factory settings - nothing helped.
Is this known issue or should I ask for service and hardware repair?
It's happening with my Huawei P20 Lite ANE-LX1 8.0.0.146(C461).

Until now it's just you who reported the issue here, a few questions before you go for service repair:
Since when do you have your phone?
Did it fell sometimes?
Are you using a custom ROM or the original one from Huawei?
And of course I had to ask even though it's obvious, do you have auto-rotate option ON or OFF?
Cheers,

I've purchased it brand new one month ago (9-Nov-18).

Good morning
I have some news for you, there is a current problem with also a person with problems on the compass (sensor for rotation) @Rondrey, and I can see your versions are the same.
So before you guys send your phone to warranty I suggest the following:
Either downgrade to the previous version of the EMUI or wait for another update from OTA.
To install or downgrade official software please look into this thread/guide by @kilroystyx:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/huawei-p20-lite/how-to/rom-official-emui-8-0-huawei-p20-lite-t3773999
So either you guys wait for the latest update 8.0.0.147 on build C461 of your country and see if it fixes it or downgrade to 8.0.0.145 or 8.0.0.144 using a dload package (step 7 of the guide of kilroystyx).
Kindly,
AS

So either you guys wait for the latest update 8.0.0.147 on build C461 of your country and see if it fixes it or downgrade to 8.0.0.145 or 8.0.0.144 using a dload package (step 7 of the guide of kilroystyx).

Great findings, thanks!
However, I decided to hand it to official service in order not to void warranty.

If it's easier for you fine, but no you don't lose warranty using his 7th way of flashing firmware via Dload package

Until now it's just you who reported the issue here, a few questions before you go for service repair:
Since when do you have your phone?
Did it fell sometimes?
Are you using a custom ROM or the original one from Huawei?
And of course I had to ask even though it's obvious, do you have auto-rotate option ON or OFF?

it happened after an official EMUI Update to latest UI. And I have seen multiple communities even huawie people have no solution people just change the device and stopped updating it.

Should be fixable by software, it's Huawei's fault obviously altough right now, the only thing you can do to make it work is either having a custom ROM to see if works alright which it should if it doesn't try custom kernels and check if it works out
Else you need to downgrade to a version which was working before.
