Screen failure by lg - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Today i put two lg g5 with one s7 edge, s6 edge plus, note 5 on a table and i make a compare of the brigtness and colors between the screens.
The brightness on the lg g5 are failure !! All the other devices have amazing colors and super brightness !! And i accept the wash out color on the lg because it's ips but the brigtness is unacceptable !! It was like the s7 edge and the other samsung devices work with 700 nits and more and the lg it's like the screen working with 200 nits or lower !! All the devices was on manual mode and full brightness. The screen is too dim . The lg has great hardware but that failure screen with so much low brightness makes the device no pleasure to keep it . Where are the 900 nits ?

Many people dont like amoled tutti - frutti collors. And the pink- or blue- white. For us it have IPS. And we like them. Are we crazy or stuped or blind?! Maybe. But we are happy with that. Or we dont like to watch the world through pink glasses. Who nows

Have you unzipped the 900nits file in the .hidden folder of the internal storage?
After I unzipped mine, copied it to the 'placebo' folder in the internal storage and rebooted, I had to turn brightness down to minimum in order to save my retinas.
I'd advise wearing sunglasses. It gets way too bright.

No. I dont know what are you talking about. Where is this file in the hidden folder ? Give instructions please .
@propov I dont have problem with the ips panel but with such a low brigtness on a screen it's very annoying especialy if you compare g5 screen with any other 2016 top other phone. I believe that this device has a good 900nits ips panel but lg makes something wrong with firmware or thermal throtlling.

Screen is not bright at all....

I just played with the G3 and when I went through the settings to display, I realized it was maxed out. I backed it down to half and it was damn near dark. On full bright it's not as bright as my S5 on half.
Having to max it will be a huge battery issue...grrrrr!!!!

Get over what? Did I say there was a problem? I am reporting my findings.
I was worried about this, GPad had the same issues and I went back to my trusty N7. Damn
Just to clarify, you can change the brightness level while it still is on auto to change the max brightness. Are you sure it still wasn't on auto? Also, was it warm and possibly overheating and dimming the screen some? It also supposedly won't max out when charging.
I didn't think to check the brightness on the AT&T demo but it seemed bright enough in the brightly lit room. I believe one website speced it out at about the same nits as the DNA which I thought was bright enough, and much brighter than my Note 2.
I kind of wish phones had matte screens though. Then we wouldn't get the reflection in sunlight.
So when I'm on pornhub I can't see the happy endings with the dark screen?

It was all the way up. I then put it on auto and went down to 41, which is where my S5 lives...so dark. I then went all the way bright again and said to myself.....this is the level I'm used to.
I'll adjust to it I'm sure, but dunno why it doesn't go very bright.

Actually as someone who is thinking of purchasing the device I welcome this thread.
By the way, who the heck are you? I believe there are mods who police the threads, we dont need you chiming in.
It's just kind of funny the first thread you see in the verizon section is someone complaining about the brightness (who already has an s5) when it's been thoroughly covered that the screen doesn't go as bright as some would hope... I checked it out in the AT&T store the other day and it it was bright in there with lots of sunlight.. It never phased me that it was dim. And it most scenarios I am going to be in darker situations than the AT&T store.. I say enjoy your s5.. Party on.

As I told the other dude....My comparison to the S5 is only because that is what I have. I am ditching the S5 for the G3, so it's obvious I would look for what's better and where it lacks....So just because YOU think it's bright enough and wherever you say it was 'thoroughly covered' that there is a brightness concern, I guess that makes you sane and everyone else crazy.
Let people judge for themselves before you start scaring mass amounts of people away from buying the phone man. The title of the thread is a very in your face. My opinion is that it's bright enough for me.
The g3 gets around 450 nits at maximum brightness the s5 is around 500. Its not night and day difference so bfd. The s5 does get a little brighter in Sun light. But no one should be using max brightness indoors

There is an option to increase the contrast in the settings, it is set to a more natural tone to begin with. The S5 is majorly over saturated and although can be set to a higher temp then the G3 screen, it goes in line to the current trend of over-saturated screens as of late. Kick the contrast up on the G3 and see if that appeases your issues.
I would also like to add 450 nits is the v equivalent of 450 candlepower over one square meter or just imagine 450 candles lit in one square meter it is no slouch by any means. And Any real useable lcd in sunlight needs to be in the 1000 to 2000 nit range

It is not very bright and the contrast is not very good (it does not stand out though unless comparing next to each other). As per reviews and display analysis, this is part of the heat and power management of using a Qhd display with the current display panel tech LG uses. Each pixel has the same power efficiency as a 1080p panel, but twice the pixels to power up. Early next year we should see the second generation for Qhd panels that have the same power efficiency of 1080p displays now. Thing is 1080p will be even better, so still will have better battery life and performance.
Samsung will likely have less issues due to amoled tech using less power overall. Who knows though until the Note 3 and Prime release. Big battle brewing with Apple this fall.

Can 2nd screen be completely disabled?

quick question. I haven't been able to find the answer to this, is their an option or a mod to completely disable and remove the second screen?
a way that would allow that portion to just be a part of the actual screen. Thanks in advance!
You can disable it, entirely, within the settings menu. Unless there is a root/xposed solution, you cannot use it to extend the primary display area.
Sent from my LG-H900 using Tapatalk
I don't see the 2nd Screen as being a part of the same digital screen as the main screen, so although you can disable the 2nd Screen, I doubt it could ever be a part of the main screen.
Screens are separate. Different resolutions ect. Plus the front cameras takeout 1\4 of the space so stuff would look funny.
It's one giant screen, there isn't v really a "2nd screen."

KCAL settings for best display color and contrast and also get rid of ghosting

Hola!
OK, at some point I will finally update the calib.cfg file again. But for now here are the settings I am using with a KCAL enabled kernel to remove ghosting from my screen as well as drasically improve contrast and colors.
I use Kernel Adiutor:
-------------------------
Under 'screen' section >
Screen Color (This kills the ghosting a lot of users are experiencing as well as removes the blue tinge the screen has):
Red = 250
Green = 250
Blue = 235
Minimum RGB value = 35
Saturation Intensity = 27
Screen Hue = 1520
Screen Value = 112
Screen Contrast = 132
---------------------
I have been running it for awhile and it looks fantastic and I have not had anymore ghosting. It also makes the screen look similar to my Note Edge when I first got it. Contrast is improved a LOT. Colors are better. They are not over saturated. Very close to natural. Whites are white and not blue (at least on my display) etc.
Please let me know your results.

I don't think so, no. These require a kernel with KCAL integrated. You can kinda adjust the screen values without root by going into settings > general > accessibility > vision > screen color adjustment > manual
But that's about the best you can do beyond nonroot screen filter overlay like cflumens supports etc
Thanks Helf. with this tweak, the display looks great!
by ghosting you mean image retention right? if that is the case, well this is awesome! Thanks
A little bit over 15 hrs and no ghosting. My only beef is how the blues look but it's a good configuration overall, easy on the eyes.

You're doing a great service for us all. Blue's and greens come off slightly dull like they could use a little saturation but if it's at the cost of prevent the ghosting effect i understand.

hm. The colors in general are probably a little duller. The vibrancy and contrast and all is usually cranked up on phones Samsung is especially awful about it. People like the 'pop' though. I just compared several shades of blue and greens with the screen at max brightness using the camera app, the colors are almost dead on to my eyes. Granted i have to manually drop the ISO a couple notches because the phone wants to automatically crank it too high (like true-to-life brightness/colors around my work desk it wants to use an ISO of 600 and ISO 200 was real world accurate. heh).

You have spectrophotometer? I would love to see some values to use, but wouldn't it be different between devices? No panel is exactly the same, or?
I seem to remember that being reiterated quite a lot on various display discussions I've followed in the past.

Just tried it as well on H918 running WETA with stock kernel and it installed and activated properly but nothing changed. Tried a few different configs and reboots just to see but nothing. Thanks for the share though. It'd be just what I'm looking for if can get to work
Is there any chance applying these changes would cause auto brightness to stop working? Possibly it's coincidence, but I changed my screen settings to exactly how it was in the OP, and since then I've noticed auto brightness no longer works on my phone? I don't see how making these changes would cause that but I figured I'd ask here to be sure, or to see if anyone else has the same problem.

You don't see it the components of the finger print sensor the small and large square between number 5 and 8. They are only visible in direct sunlight on light/white wallpapers
Did you expect a component that is able to read your fingerprint, located under glass, to be completely invisible in every possible situation? ?

Actually OP has a pretty valid point, and you are being just annoying. Nobody expects to see stuff from under the screen no matter what on any device. Only the display contents are supposed to be visible.

The above being said.. I don't think I can see this under my screen. I have never noticed this (but have not looked for it either). Either outside under sunlight or inside; on bright and/or white background apps. Mine is BOE screen, not LG, if that makes any difference.

Question Anyone noticed this weird square before the March update?

When the phone is in direct sunlight, the phone changes the screen brightness. Somehow a slightly tilted square appears where the fingerprint sensor is located. It's not visible when manually setting brightness to the max. I hadn't noticed this before. When pressing the lock button, the square immediately disappears even though the screen off animation is still running, so it's probably a software thing.
Are there others who also have this (possibly on the February update as well)?

I meant that someone had already noticed it before.
Now that the sunlight is even brighter I actually see another rectangle (proximity/light sensor?) just below the front camera. I get the feeling it's not actually a software thing but just the transparency of the screen that's making it possible to look inside the phone in bright sunlight.

Yeah I get that it has to do with the sensor. I just thought that somehow they had limited brightness in that area or something, but i.g. it's just the transparency of the screen that's causing it to be visible
