I am looking for an app which several friends can install on their android and/or iPhone and which will
a) periodically send me a location update
b) allow me to poll them for location
and ideally show this on google maps.
Background: we'll drive with several cars in places that we are not familiar with, so keeping the herd together without needing to strictly drive convoy would really be useful.
This would NOT be itended for surrepticiously follow them, but purely a 'share my location (and possibly speedy, track)' with a limited list of friends.
I knwo with Waze one can 'share my drive' (ETA etc) but can this be used to follow several others?
If not what app(s) could help with this?
A co-worker suggested Glympse, and that does indeed seem to be agood option

So i take it based on whats out, google NAV is the best GPS NAV app out there on this phone. Of course being free has alot to do with it, but I find a few features that it is lacking. Does Google nav have a way to search for waypoints,POI, save custom address, change alternate routes (fastest-shortest), day/night switching, map updates or any other hidden feature that i may have missed.
I know i'm asking too much for a free app, but its google..seems like they give away apps all the time.
If there is an app better, please also recommend
Day/night switching happens automatically.. Don't know what the threshold is, but I'd imagine it's based around sunrise/sunset times for your location. Other items on your list.. Not sure about.
I have to say Google Maps has done me a multitude of good since my first Android. I have watched the app develop as I used it and heres what I think...
Recently GM added multiple subapps to GM: Latitude, Maps, Navigation, and Places. Latitude allows you to share and view you and your friends locations. Can be really handy for some.
Maps is what it is....a mapping programs.
Navigate is my favorite. Clicl this and you can speak or type or choose from a saved address. Pretty nice too and you CAN choose route information and rerouting its pretty nice. Set your gps start and end....go drive and play with you phone on the Nav portion and youll find all the options. Plus multiple methods of getting to and from as well.
Places is basically POI layed out nicely anyone can quickly find whatever they need.
I swear by gmaps and wont do anything elzeq
On the first screen of Navigation, click on the "gear" icon at the top and you can choose "Avoid highways" and/or "Avoid tolls". Not earth shattering settings, but certainly a step in the right direction. I think this was around a couple of updates ago. I have CoPilot Live installed on my phone and I always go to Google Navigation when I need directions, especially where it's integrated into the system much better (navigating to contacts, address links, etc).
Thanks guys, this makes me like the google map even more..However I don't see why google made sub applications to work with G. maps...maybe they shoulda just made 1 application to do all the functionality instead of running map, nav, location, places, and whatever else they come up with..too many apps to run instead of being a feature that should be built as one..in my opinion
Not complaining just sharing my thoughts.
Just a guess, but I'd imagine separating is so the carriers can customize the basic Maps app, without having to worry about messing with the other advanced features.
Is there a good app that gives Turn-by-Turn Cycling Navigation on Android? I know that you can get directions on Google Maps but it doesn't provide Navigation like they do for driving, walking, & public transit. I've been googling all over the place trying to find an app that actually works and have not come across anything. Does anyone know of a good one?
If you're riding in the streets, just use any other carnav, right? Clearly sometimes depending upon the circumstances you'll have to be aware of road rules or safety and there are times one must do a P turn rather than a left turn, but you just assess that as you go along.
Curious how you're doing this... Headphones? (Hopefully not!) Handlebar mount?
As for if you're riding in bike paths, offroad, etc, there are apps out there which you can record a path and they can direct you on that path. I could do some searching, I know I saw at least one out there that'll direct you down a known route. Keep in mind that you'll be creating these routes yourself as they're typically intended as breadcrumbs.. ie: Getting back out of a hike or such.

Derp. And might be UK only, although they say they rely on OSM so it's very possible it works elsewhere. Yeah, seems to be, I keep getting "Destination too far away"... Aha, because it uses a "cyclestreets.net" as its routing engine, which is UK-only. Poo.

Thanks khaytsus for looking that up for me but unfortunately those apps are not what I'm looking for and I have tried them before making my post.
To be a bit more clear though, I am looking to keep my phone in my pocket or arm band, have only one speaker in my ear (like a bluetooth earpiece) to tell me the instructions for each turn and have the phone vibrate as well.
The closest I found was bike-hub but you are right that it is just UK because I was unable to map out any route when searching thru the app.
I would prefer to have it more GPS like so I don't have to map it out on the PC beforehand and do not want to really use the regular GPS apps because even walking directions (though they avoid going on highways) they do not follow bike trails (which may be quicker than following side roads).
If you can't find it or someone else then I can look more but I'm starting to think there is not one currently for the US market

In my research I found only two; 1) copilot, 2) HTC Locations with Trips tab.
Well I can't stand #1, and it seems that #2 was only available in Asia, unless I'm missing something? it seems like a feature that should be standard as it has since the first days of dedicated gps devices but it still hasn't arrived on Android, not even in the Google suite of apps despite the constant posts in the Google forums requesting this function.
being able to create a specific route or record a route for the purpose of sharing and reuse I don't think is a lot to ask.
until this happens their will always be a market for a dedicated GPS.

It supports a number of different maps that can be side loaded on your sdcard so no data connection is needed.

that's a nice non-data tracker, like Google's My Tracks without the 3g map, thx..... but I still can't record for vehicle nav with text to speech which is what I'd really like.

I purchased Navigon assuming it would do this, but it doesn't. Great app otherwise.

that looks like a perfect companion to my Colorado GPS! I tracked our whole summer holiday with it, but it's be great to be able to see that track on a mobile device (that's a bit larger than that 2-something inch screen that my Colorado has )
Hi guys, I’m new to the forum and fairly new to Android devices in general. I’ve googled a good bit before posting, and searched this forum for some keywords, but haven’t come up with a solution to what I need to do.
I have what seems like a fairly simple need: Set up an android device the way I want it, and then clone this image to multiple other devices.
I work with an organization that conducts a lot of epidemiology surveillance in foreign countries. The surveys are done on android based devices with a collection of off-the-shelf apps, plus one we had custom built for our purpose. Data is sent to us via whatever mobile networks happen to be available in the country being surveyed (we buy our phones unlocked, and get the SIM cards in-country).
As we continue to expand, installing all those apps and getting all of the settings just right becomes a very tedious, repetitive task, when you consider doing 100+ phones a month. .
Ideally I would like to stick with the factory rom, just add/remove some apps and configure settings. The cloning process needs to be fairly straight-forward, and not require a bunch of apps to be installed on the target phones first, because that kind of defeats the purpose.
For the time being, we’re using Motorola Atrix and Atrix 2. We also have some XT720s but we’re phasing those out.
Not sure if this is relevant, but below is roughly what provisioning currently looks like:
1. We receive a batch of phones, say 100 at a time
2. First, do a factory reset, and go through the initial setup
3. Remove as many of the factory installed apps as possible
4. Set up WiFi
5. Log into Google Play account and install the 6 apps we actually use
6. Make LauncherPro the default desktop, set it to only use 1 dock and 1 desktop, set a plain boring background, hide all except the app drawer icon, and have and icon for our app, and an airplane mode widget on the desktop.
7. Finally, enter the server connection settings in our survey app (this part we’ve gotten to a point where all we do is drop a config file to the SD Card, and it picks up the settings for this particular app)
8. Turn off the phone, and do it all again on the other 99 devices…
Any thoughts on how to automate this?
This is a general question. I'm having trouble "forcing" a website to utilize my location. There's a site we use at work. It is built on a Google Maps layer. We can log work completed and other information for units that appear as features/layers on the map. That all works just fine. The trouble is with the "auto-follow" function on the map. The guys who have IOS devices are not having any problems. If I use the generic "internet" browser or the browser in LastPass, auto-follow works as expected. It pans/zooms the map to my current location and puts a blue dot wherever I am. The issue is that auto-follow does not function in Chrome browser.

So far, nothing has worked. I'm beginning to wonder if there is something within the app/site that is not requesting location data in a way that Chrome either understands or wants to comply with. I have a line to the "developers" and if I can give them specific information, they can probably make some changes.
Yes, I could use other browsers. But Chrome is my default and is integrated with everything else on my phone (T-Mo Galaxy S7 with most current versions of everything) But I am not the only person experiencing this. I'd like to help out those guys (most of which are not very tech savvy) by cracking this nut.
Anyone have any thoughts or ideas?
