Hello to Everyone!
If you are like I was, stuck on FRF91 without being able to downgrade to get root, or if you just want to be able to flash to any earlier version Nexus One rom, then this post is for you.
FRF91 does not allow you to flash to just any earlier version rom so for this tutorial, we will be using the EPE76 rom that I have already renamed to passimg.zip which allows us to bypass this limitation. The steps provided in this tutorial are all done on a stock t-mobile Nexus one with a locked bootloader, this is especially useful for people who wish to use the rooting method without unlocking the bootloader. If you already have an unlocked bootloader, there is no reason to follow this guide.
"Update" confirmed to also work on at&t nexus one
Notice: after you do this you will have to redownload your apps.
Steps:
1. Transfer the provided passimg.zip file to the root of your sd card.
2. Power down your phone.
3. Hold down the Volume Down button as you power your phone back on.
4. A screen should appear showing your phone’s system searching for various files. This will take up to 2 minutes.
5. The phone will ask you if you want to start the update. Press the Volume Up button to start the update.
6. If you followed these steps correctly, Congratulations, you are now on stock EPE76 Android 2.1 and able to flash to any official Nexus One rom that has been released.
If this guide helped you please let people know, the more posts there are, the more comfortable other people will feel to follow this guide.
Just helping the OP out.
Link to the passimg.zip here
If his guide helped you, please consider buying him a beer.
Doesn't work.
'update failed - file is older!'
thanks for helping with the links.
bookmarked!!!
@ Amdathlonuk
If you received that error, then it was not done correctly. I downgraded from FRF91 two times before posting the tutorial and it worked both times, please make sure to follow the guide 100% exactly as posted or it won't work. Thanks.
If you already have your bootloader unlocked, a very much simple approach that doesn't require you to downgrade to stock and erase all your data is this:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_Nexus_One_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
Except of course, you don't need to flash the radio (since you have it already in FRF91) and instead of flashing CyanogenMod, you would flash any repacked and rooted FRF91 update.zip like this one.
@ asero
This method is for people who don't necessarily want to unlock their bootloaders. Thanks for pointing that out, I have updated my posting.
OMG, I was stuck on frf91 for the past 3 days after manually updating like an idiot. You saved me from a lot of headaches. Very easy tutorial. Donation on the way. Thank You.
Thanks very much
Is EPE76 only for T-mobile phones or is it safe for ATT phones as well?
I have tried this and several files to downgrade, none worked. I wonder if the fact I used the "universal" 85b update that flashes the whole device.
I don't think that is the problem because I myself used frf85b universal after doing the steps posted above and then rooted successfully following the how to root nexus one without unlocking the bootlowder tutorial.

I've got unrooted nexus and it's at&t's version.
will this Downgrade method work for me?
Is there any risk in it?
tnx!
To be honest, I don't know if it will work on an at&t nexus because I don't have one, but it should work on it if the epe76 nexus rom is compatible with it.

Could I get a download link to the universal 85b zip to do this please. The Google download is not working it shows that the file is not found. Would appreciate it very much
Here is the universal frf85b for whoever needs it

If there is a thread for this, I apologize in advance..I've just recently switched from iPhone 4 and was very familiar w/ jailbreaking..but this rooting is all brand new too me.
I'm kinda confused..how does rooting work? Do you complete the root process and then choose which "rom" you would like to use? Or is each rom a different process? From the research I've done so far I think I'm interested in the viperROM..mainly because of the battery life increase...battery life has been my biggest beef since switching.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Again, if there is a thread for n00bs already..I apologize in advance mods.
Thanks!
For the most part, every rom is flashed the same way. Thru the recovery menu.

And yes. You root first and then download and flash what rom you want.

That thread will help give you a little info on it.
Basically you first need to S-off your device, and then root it afterwards. Once you get S-off (i suggest using revolutionary), you will then flash a custom recovery image. Once you have S-off and recovery installed, you can then flash whatever rom you'd like, using the the custom recovery to do so. Pretty much any custom rom that you flash will already be rooted with super user access, so you'll be good to go once you flash the rom.
The process to flashing all roms is the same. Basically, create a nandroid backup of your current working setup, then perform a full wipe, and flash your new rom. In addition to creating a nandroid backup prior to wiping, be sure your contacts are saved or synced to google, and use titanium backup or something to backup any apps you want to keep.
You'll pick it all up in no time. Soon you'll be flashing roms day and night like a maniac.
k, i followed a link (wont let me post cuz i dont have 8 posts)
and i have superuser now
now..where can i find roms to install?
you were right..already installing my second rom
i had viperROM but realized i had an older version of it (1.2.1) and now im wiping clean and installing 1.3
thanks!
Hi
I Just got myself an optimus G, whoever i got it from forgot to tell me the device is rooted and is running another rom, not the stock.
Anyone knows how do i restore to stock?
I found what supposedly is some version of the stock rom-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2067871
but now i see i need cwm for it. which i currently don't have.
So i searched further and found this-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1979996
Which is perfect for my needs, but- "read the instructions!"
I would, if there were any. I'm not saying anything and everything should include a mountainload of details and steps, but it would be helpful if some of the threads here would include a line or two of explenation for LG noobies. I see people tell others "use fastboot" as it's a given. I have no idea what that even means, and searching did not help much as well...
Any help would be appreciated, i need to get this stock asap, supposed to be a gift.
Thanks.
If you're running another rom shouldnt you have a custom recovery?
And if you just want to start fresh go to free node irc channel #lg-optimus-g and at the top is a link for lgnpst just follow the guide there

I have no idea how they did it, but when i boot up there's a startup similat to the nexus. On the other hand, the rom still says "AT&T" and the LG UI is present+it's rooted
Hopping on to the IRC. i already have LGNPST an the .TOT file, just need whatever DLL's that are mentioned...
I haven't actually used the guide but I'm not in a state to guide anyone through the process at the moment so I will just say follow the guide as well as you can. If I remember right that's the automated version so it should set everything up for you, but I've never used that one so I'm unsure. If you have questions ask in irc or wait till about noon and ask. There's usually a lot of people on at that time

Thanks.
I actually got everything and the instructions, only problem is that the damn thing won't go into download mode (unless the fastboot thingy IS download mode, but then i don't know why LGPNST doesn't recognize it...)
Try to unplug it, turn it off, hold volume up and down then plug it in and tap the power button

Wored, phone flashed to stock.
This really isn't hard, why isn't there a step by step walkthrough on a sticky over here? i think i'll just make one for other lost souls.

I think the reason why is because LGNPST is copyrighted software which means XDA doesn't want to provide access to as they'd be violating the DMCA as well as risking pissing off LG who's software it is.

Hey folks.
The S4 is my first smartphone. Ever. I rooted it a few weeks ago and have been playing with different tools and utilities. I love the extra control it gives me.
Been using Smartlauncher Pro as my launcher as well, but it doesn't give me the customization I want. I dig the UI though, it's minimalist just the way I like.
I've been keeping my eye out for ROM's I can try out, and I think I want to try Cynogen for the S4. However, I am terrified of destroying my investment. I've read horror stories of flashes gone wrong... I don't want to permanently brick my device.
Is there anyone here who can hold my hand while I install my ROM? I seriously have no idea what I'm doing, instructions or no.
...I sound so pathetic right now.
Thanks folks.

Do you have a custom recovery installed like TWRP or CWM? If you do all you need to do is download the rom (I put them on ext sd)....and gapps if your flashing cyanogen, boot into recovery, make a backup (I put this on my ext sd card too), wipe, flash rom, flash gapps and reboot.

Hi!
The first thing you need to find out is what build number you have. This will tell you if you are able to root and install recovery in order to put a new rom on the phone. Do NOT update your phone by the over the air update that is currently available! To find your build number go to settings: the more tab: about phone, then scroll down. If you have JDQ39.I545VRUAME7 then you are in the same boat as many of us and accidently did the upgrade which at this moment has no way to root. If you haven't done the upgrade than you need to find one of the many threads on here that will walk you through the process.
Hope this helps some, there are others on here that can give you a much more detailed walkthrough of how to root if you are on the correct older build.
The best advice I can give is to read the entire original post (OP) for the ROM you like, and as much of the thread as you can. 9 times out of 10 when someone has a problem with the ROM it's been discussed, and is often listed in the OP. Usually there are step by step instructions on installing the ROM. I believe there's a general ROM flashing guide in this forum somewhere as well.
Good luck and have fun :good:

That's good! You haven't been updated which means you can still flash ROMs. Are you familiar with both types of ROMs, TouchWiz and AOSP? CyanogenMod is an AOSP ROM, which will be completely different from what you're running right now, TouchWiz. You're rooted, but have you installed a custom recovery? You need one to flash ROM's, either TWRP or CWM. You can also make a nandroid backup in recovery, and if anything goes wrong, you can go back to exactly how you are now. Definitely read the OP of the ROM thread multiple times and follow the flashing instructions correctly.

If anything goes wrong with the flash in the next step, go to restore and you'll be back to how you are now.
Did you download the ROM to your phone along with Gapps? For AOSP Roms you need a separate gapps package, which is Google apps.

I checked out the Cyanogenmod site, apparently there's no stable versions for the VZW GS4?
Oh wells, flash anyway! That's what I do!
Worst case scenario, you have to use Odin to get back to stock. I used to keep a nandroid on my PC for just in case scenarios as well. One time on my GNex I flashed something really bad and had to adb pull everything off my phone, wipe the whole thing, and start over.
