I think I should change the thread around. If your X10 has absolute no screen protector on (meaning that you removed the stock one), do you have any scratches on your phone?
The reason is theres all these scratch tests on youtube which proves glass screens to be pretty scratch resistive.

So according to these tests, I don't see how I would scratch my screen other than dropping it. But if I really dropped it, I doubt a screen protector would do any good.
I took mine off a month ago and simply never got around to replacing it, not even a mark on it since, I prefer it off.
My experience with silicon covers and others is that they end up damaging the more than they protect it, dust gets caught under them and acts like sandpaper.

I have two on, and after a few incidents I'm so glad I do. Some one said this before, "the screen is scratch resistant, not scratch proof", so remove it at your own peril.

Using a plastic film over the glass panel is like putting a hideous gown on a Ferrari. I used my Galaxy S without any protection for a month, and it was fine. Just don't let harsh objects or sand rub agqinst the screen.

I had a silicon body protector and a cheap screen protector on my X10, then I finally bought an InvisibleShield (full body) and love it.
In my case though, the silicon protector I had was constantly pressing the camera button, which would disable my face buttons, making me think my phone was suffering a bunch of random glitches. Put up with that for a couple of weeks before I discovered others online having the same issue due to their own covers.
I work outdoors and tend to be pretty hard on my phones, so I don't think I'd ever be brave enough to let my X10 run around "nude".
Hands down hell yes!! I take very good care with all my phones and I think screen protectors are a must especially for smartphones. I don't think I can stand having my phone scratched even just a tiny bit lol. I'm not a big fan of cases though cuz...I think people should just avoid dropping them in the first place, but there's always a worse comes to worse scenario huh? anyway, I was playing with my friends iPhone today and it had an anti-glare matte screen protector that is absolutely amazing. It has a nice texture to it too that makes your swiping and scrolling a more... pleasurable experience. I believe there's one for the X10 as well, I'm gonna go check that out =)
I too, use double protectors. And, the lint free fiber cloth to clean the screen. I am a clean freak, per say.
Its a must for me, sometimes I forget and put it in the same pocket with my keys, just imagine the scratches out could get.

If they used a hard glass you should only get hairline scratches at worst, which for some is ok to live with. Though you will definitely still get scratches on it, unless they used sapphire crystal like on expensive watches which is practically only scratchable by diamond
Well, I took off the pre-applied protector (not the obvious one showing you how to unlock your phone) about 3months ago and I haven't had any problems with scratches. I even proved a point to my brother by trying to scratch the screen with a coin. Still no scratches. Obviously, if you manage to damage your screen with a coin, it is not my fault!
Don't go without a screen protector. My screen is mashed now.

I accidently removed the pre-installed screen protector after trying to add another cheap screen protector over the top. but sharpishly replaced it the following day with a Martin fields screen protector best £10 i spent and actually feels nicer than the screen itself to scroll with and leaves less marks. i couldn't go without one risking scratching the screen. thats some expensive kit to just scratch and ruin.
what do guys do when you buy something like a car? Do you all have plastic on your new couch, do you put screen protectors on your watches etc,etc

I have removed the preinstalled screen protector and a have a couple very small hairline scratches from random pocket contact(possibly keys). The X10 screen is by no means scratch proof or very resistant however i noticed a great improvement in the touch sensitivaty without the screen protector.
I thought the galaxy s2 had gorilla glass? Got two tiny scratches on the screen, kinda pissed because the phone is so new there are no screen protectors available.
I keep my phone in a pouch in my pocket, I thought this gorilla glass was unscratchable????

a key in your pocket might not scratch the screen, but some grains of sand for example can really mess with it.
even gorilla glass doesn't help against sand grains.
I keep repeating this... but you most likely scratched off some of the oleophobic coating, not the actual screen. It may look like scratches in certain angles or under certain light, but I bet you it's the coating.

So really hard glass covered by an easily scratched coating. If true, is there an easy, cheap fix? If not, then sounds like a screen protector is a good idea, even if the glass itself never scratches. Which kind of defeats the purpose of the Gorilla glass and the coating.
Nothing is unscratchable, unbreakable, unbeatable. GorillaGlass has the advatage of being resistant to the "usual" sources of scratching, but dust and sand are tricky bastards, that practically surrounds us and our precious phones.
When I first got my galaxy s, as careful as I was I still managed to get a few small scratches on it within the span of a few days. The only way to see them was when the screen was very clean and there was a direct source of light on it. Looking back it probably was a bit of sand or something sand like.
I ended up getting an sgp ultra clear protector. I would really recommend it once its out. But don't worry about small scratches. As long as you don't notice them when the screens on will be fine.
I think I'll end up cleaning my pockets religiously once I get my s2.
I think we all want to keep our babies scratch- and fingerprint free. With protectors, cloths and cases we make our best effords. On the other hand, not many of us keep our phones for more than a year (I had my SGS for six months before switching to the SGS2). So, for whom are we keeping the display in mint condition? The next buyer? I'm not saying that we all should throw our phones in pockets full of sand, keys and rusty nails, I'm just saying that common sense will keep our displays away from serious harm. To get annoyed over scratches that are only visible in bright, artificial light is probably not healthy.

I understand. I have a Gorilla glass phone and have always used a screen protector. Mostly because I read many user reports very shortly after the phone came out about getting scratches for no apparent reason. I can't know if it was the coating or the glass itself that got scratched.
My point was if they coat Gorilla glass with a more easily scratchable film, and you have to cover it with a protector anyway then the purpose of the hard glass and the oleophobic coating are both pretty much defeated. Unless you prefer to go naked, have less fingerprints and put up with the scratches. There really needs to be a coating that's as hard as the glass.
I use a protector because it's easily replaced, so new surface cheap and simple anytime I need. Without it scratches seem difficult and/or expensive to fix.
I agree. But it becomes somewhat ridiculous when we're just stepping up on the screen protection ladder. So, we have GorillaGlass, which is protecting our display from scratches. Then we're putting on a screen protector to avoid scratching the scratch protective glass. And just in case, let's put the phone in a leather case or a pouch, so not to harm the screen protector. It's like having sex wearing three condoms; you will be safe as hell, but the feeling and the experience will be practically non-existent.

I've seen a billion iPhone 3GS's with shattered screens (wtf teens?!!!?).

Corning says increased scratch resistance is one of its features, as well as the break resistance you mention.

But if they put an oleophobic coating on it the scratch resistance is nearly pointless. So you're rationale could make the most sense.
I agree that sand can really mess it up. My S2 has a scratch on the screen which can only be explained by sand from the beach. Even though I never brought my phone to the beach, it may have gotten inbetween my Samsung leather flip case somewhere, sometime, somehow in my shorts pocket.
I keep my phone away from small change and keys and all of a sudden, there is a small 3mm scratch near the middle to the right.
Honestly though? Everything about this phone is better than my old Motorola Milestone (which has been to many beaches), but the Milestone's glass touchscreen seems more durable.
So note to everyone with an S2 in a case: apparently sand can destroy the screen.

If I put my device in a series of angles I can see......mmmmmmmmmmmm 2 very, very tiny scratches. It takes like 10 min in proper light to spot them.
BTW: I did try to scratch it with a couple of keys back in may to show off; nailed it.

I was using the phone for a few days after i got it without a screen protector. I knew it was gorilla glass and stuff, but something inside kept gnawing me about getting a screen protector.
Just buy a screen protector and have that mental peace.

On milestone and droid 2 global gorila glass I never had a scratch having each one about a year and with no screen protector at all...
Maybe the cover for not having so many finger prints can make gorilla glass less "gorila" on SGS2?

Dammit, yesterday i went to the beach with the phone, sand may be the reason of the scratch
I already have a screen protector, but i didn't set it because there was no reason to me, now i got one
Yeah, I scratched mine too but I've kind of got used to it. It's a little annoying I guess.
Anyway, suppose it's a bit like shutting the door now the horse has bolted but might as well get a protector. Don't they change the feel of the screen though? I've always thought they might be kind of annoying.
As a user of both sgs and sgs2, I find the Gorilla glass on sgs2 to be far superior in every department

You folks are aware that no one ever said gorilla glass is hard as a diamond, right?
In fact, no substantial claims about it's hardness were *ever* made. It's supposed to have a better tensile strength and be less breakable, not harder.
In fact, the treatment it gets plus the oleophobic coatings and whatnot might even make it more susceptible to scratching than regular glass.

You were one of the lucky few with your hd2. I've never seen a screen shatter so easily. I made money repairing the hd2 because it couldn't take a bump.

Shatter or scratch?
There IS a difference, you know.
Hardness and (tensile) strength aren't the same thing.
And they're usually inversely proportional.
Materials that have a high hardness (resistance to scratching) are usually VERY brittle.
Materials that have a high tensile strength (resistance to breaking) are usually VERY scratchable.

The sooner i receive my screen protector the better, im ultra careful not to have anything else in my pocket like keys or coins when then phone is there in case i do get a scratch,so far so good but after spending all that cahs on this phone it's important to get a screen protector.
This is one of the weak points with our phone, "hard"ware wise.
I also got a small scratch from putting it in my pocket without anything else. Compared I never got a protector for my old smart phone (competitor brand and os ) and only a few small scratches in some years, I was a bit disappointed.
Though, that scratch isn't that bad, and now that my protective foil arrived it can be neither seen nor felt.
But: Without the cheap foil the "feeling" was better

OK Thanks and I think it is 100% better getting a screen Protector for safety.It is better to get a Rs.100-500 screen guard instead of spending money on a screen after getting scratch on the screen.I am using 1 already and kept 1 as spare
Scratches WILL occur on gorilla glass, but they are less likely to be seenwhen compared to other screens.
So buy a screen protector.

Hmm..I already ordered the 2nd one from Scratchgard.in, Rs.499, so it's costly, still I've read a lot of users posting that they didn't use any screen protector for more than one year wit GG and also they used it roughly, still no scratches on it. Yes I know Gorilla Glass is scratch resistant but not proof.
I'd like some users to post here who are not using any protective screen and post feedback here, if there is any scratches appearing or not.

There's already a LOT of threads talking about this exact topic. Yes, gorilla glass is tougher than your average glass, but it's not scratch-proof, so I personally don't see the point in taking the risk. Gorilla glass can and will get scratched.
Get a screen protector and never have to worry about scratches, or don't get one and always worry.
Guys i can highly recommend getting this screen protector you really cannot tell that you even have a protecter on your screen,after paying all that money for this phone im not taking any chances.

I don't have a screen protector on and I have dropped it several times on asphalt and other surfaces and I don't have any scratches on my screen. I am waiting for the SGS2 to come out on sprint (hopefully) and I won't be bothering with a screen protector.

good for you but id be more "better to be safe than sorry" and for a few quid for a screen protector like the Ultra Olephobic which you wouldn't even notice it was on i believe it's definitely worth getting.

I read in quite a few posts about light scratches, most probably due to the anti-fingerprint coating on the glass. But I wont get a screen protector. In the WM times with resistive screens you had to get one because the screens could get scratches with just your fingernail or the stylus, but they all (even the expensive ones) looked bad. So on my HD2 I didn't bother with a screen protector and don't regret it because after over 1,5 years of intensive use (otherwise it was in my pocket or on the stone floor besides my bed) without any cases or screen protectors, my HD2 doesn't even have one single scratch (and I mean the whole device). I just had to remove the paint of the battery cover because it came off on the edges where I hold it, but I would have done that anyway because it looks better, as you can see in this thread. I hope my SGS2 proves to be as good as my HD2.

No it doesn't, honestly i can barely tell mine is on it really is that good just take time to apply it properly there are videos on XDA which are useful regarding this, i did read reviews beforehand and most were favourable but after applying it i really am impressed with it, scrolling is still as smooth as ever,sure you'll get fingerprints and smudge marks but you'd get that on the screen anyway just wipe it off.

Even though it says that the screen is scratch resistant, I wouldn't take the chance. When I got my SGSII, I went ahead and searched for a pouch and a screen protector. Money well spent!
I have it from 1 month ago, without any protector a no scratches. I transport my SGS2 in my pocket always.
For those of you who say that they aren't worried about their phone scratching because its always in their pocket, I would still recommend you getting one, purely because of the fact that Gorilla Glass is vulnerable to SAND and DUST. Sand particles have a very high hardness rating exceeding that of Gorilla glass, so it will carve up your pretty little phone without a care in the world. Simply wiping the screen cover with a cloth that has a particle of sand on it, can scratch the screen, not to mention the original oleophobic coating Samsung put over the Gorilla Glass, which itself is very vulnerable.
I can also vouch for the SGP Ultra Oleophobic Screen Protector. Hands down the best balance of everything a screen protector should have. I've used some no name brands, the Zagg ones as well as the SGP Ultra Crystal one before, and none can compare.
The SGP Ultra Oleophobic beats the Ultra Crystal hands-down simply because it repels oil much better, and can be cleaned with one wipe of a shirt or cloth. On the other hand, the ultra crystal clings to fingerprints and oil like a fat kid to a candy bar.
Both however, exhibit zero rainbow effects, air bubbles or orange peel effects. For about 30 minutes after putting the oleophobic one on, there is a bit of rubbery/slightly sticky feeling on the protector, but it goes away after some use or a bit of cleaning with a microfibre cloth. I'd also recommend not applying the protector on vertically, from speaker to microphone, but rather, from left to right. It is MUCH easier to align this way, and much easier to retry if you messed up the first time.
I've had many people who've played with my phone ask me why I don't bother putting on a screen protector, and when I tell them to look again, they are genuinely surprised they didn't realize it was there.
TL;DR: get a screen protector, because sand (which is actually harder than gorilla glass) and dust can and WILL scratch your screen eventually. also, SGP Ultra Oleophobic beats everything else hands down.
I think Sammy will send the gorilla glass as OTA update when Android Weedcake 2.5.5 hits the market sometime in the distant future.

well well well talk about fate,there is a scratch on the screen and i only put the ultra olephobic screen protector on yesterday initially i thought it was a hair but it's a very small scratch so im even more pleased now i had this on otherwise id have a scratch, thankfully you get 2 screen protectors so i can just replace this one.
Thinking Gorilla Glass was scratch resistant as I have seen on YouTube, I showed my friend that it doesn't scratch. I took a coin and rubbed it on the screen. I wasn't even pushing that hard. When I look, there are thin scratches from the coin! They are only noticeable when the screen is off. Except for two small ones. They are about 5 mm long and pretty thin. They are visible all the time especially when there is a white background. They distort the colour and now I'm obsessed knowing they are there. Is there any way to remove them? Such as tooth paste or some other material? I don't want anything that will remove the oleophobic coating on the screen. Just something to fill in the scratches. Thanks!
Im sure there is a polish for delicate glass. GOOGLE is your friend.

Don't be surprised when Asus reject your RMA request?
Sure it's scratch resistant, but it does not mean you should go out and rub a coin into it.
Sorta like trying out a bulletproof vest by shooting yourself...
I also have a tiny scratch right where the bezel meets the display because i droped a lighter on my prime once.
Glass will always be susceptible to scratches no matter what brand, its physics! Would be cool to have a tablet with a diamond touchscreen though. Now that would be scratch proof
I once dropped my Evo 3d with an extended battery on my prime. No scratches and that thing was heavy and it was from 4-5 feet as well. Landed screen first.

Why don't you put a screen protector on your device? First, if nothing else, you'll be sure not to add any additional scratches to your screen.
2nd, other people have posted that scratches were not visible once they put a screen protector on their screen.
I have tried three different ones, ArmorShield, Skinomi and ACase.
Really like the A Case screen protector, and it comes three to a pack, so if you mess up the first one, you still have two more (it's a dry apply screen shield)

Wow people really do confuse the difference between "-proof" and "-resistant". Have you ever tried submerging a water-resistant watch in water?
In any case, most touch screen devices these days are coated with oleophobic coatings which scratch much more easily than glass.

You almost certainly scratched the oleophobic coating, not the screen itself. Not that it matters really, the screen still looks scratched. Those coatings are not nearly as tough as the underlying glass. I have noticed similar little scratches on my Galaxy Nexus screen. All in all, I still think the coating is great though.

That makes plenty of sense as im pretty sure glass wont scratch from the little amount of pressure i was applying. The thing is, there are two small spots, one being around 5-7 mm long and the other being only around 2 mm long. They are mostly only noticed when a light coloured backround is on, such as the white backround in the browser. They seem to show up sort of ''Rainbowish' these ones must be the actual glass that is scratched because otherwise i doubt they would show up like that. Anyways, thanks for the kind reply!

I am considering purchasing a screen protector ASAP. Does the Acase screen protector show up in anyway? What i mean is, will the screen look any different? An example would be an anti-glare screen protector makes the screen more matte and i dont think the colours show as nicely. Thanks for the recommendations!

Those might actually be small fractures in the glass. Similar occurrences have been discussed in the My Screen Cracked (or something like that) thread. It seems like Asus may have a glass quality issue with some of their units.

How would the screen have fractured from a quarter that rubbed on the screen? That makes sense of why the scratches are deeper than the others but I don't know how the screen would fracture. Is there anyway I can try to ride these fractures/scratches? I have been searching for weeks now and the best product I could find would be "iDrops" they polish out scratches but people say it's removed the oleophobic coating. Will some sort of toothpaste rubbed into the scratch work?

No that will only make it worse (toothpaste at least). I think you have to accept it can't be 100% fixed with some paste/polish. You could contact Asus for a new touchscreen.
I've had my prime since December with no screen protector or case. i use it extensively everyday. no scratches at all on my display or back cover.
I really don't care if the scratches can be seen when the screen is off I just don't want them to be visible when the screen is on (rainbow like). As long as they aren't visible when the screen is on is fine with me. Do you know of any fine polishes that might do this that won't harm the glass or the screen?

My Prime once fell of from a bed on the floor, around 40-50cm, it didn't got any scrathes as it was attached to the dock, and was half open, though now I have a feeling the dock does not hold the tablet so tightly as before.
But what I don't like about the Gorrilla Glass (or either it's not calibrated touch detection in the software side) is that the Tablet does not detect my touches when I use the back side of my finger (finger nail), does anyone else have the same issue? Other touch devices I have (iPad and EVO 3D) detect my touches from front and back of the finger the same without issues.
I actually have a HOX with Gorilla Glass 2, but this seems to be the most active and recent thread regarding removal of scratches from GG, so I suppose it'd still be rather relevant. No point starting a new thread just for GG on a different device, right?
Yes, I babied this phone like... a baby since i got it on the first day and no screen protectors were out yet, but somehow it still got a nick(rather visible) in the upper left corner and some light scratches around the middle of the phone.
Then I found some manufacturing defects but I'm afraid they'll refuse to repair/replace my phone under warranty if they see the nick.
So has anyone found any way to cover up the scratches? Even temporarily, just to get through the chat with the assistance team? (No I can't get 3M's 06070, lowest quantity sold here is 6 quarts for ~$400. Way too expensive.)
