Does anyone know if one can use any 2.5mm earplug handsfree with the XDA Mini S? The one supplied is difficult to carry lots of wires, would like to have a monaural one. Has anyone tried any? Kindly let me know. Thanks.

I was also looking for a good headset fromt he beginning on, the issue might be solved if I can install the A2DP software (will try later), but a nice wired headset would still be nice.
My favorite would be the ones SonyEricsson is shipping with the music phones.
I actually tested a 2.5mm adapter with cord and speakerpice (with clip) plus adapter for 3,5mm, which would be perfect. One was for Nokia, one for Motorola - both are NOT compatible with the HTCs!
Lately I saw a shop selling the same adapter specifically for HTC devices, so the problem might be solved.
Also I saw 2 wired 2,5mm stereo headsets from Jabra on the US website, they are for sale there but NOT in Europe. If these would work, they would for sure be of very good quality.
Anyone tested these?

I use it for headphones only (senheiser PX200 which sound great with the Wizard!), so not sure if they have mic connected or not. Sorry.
Get the adapter at radioshack.. there r tons n tons of them for $3.. i got one n it works like charm..

I have an adapter 2,5 to 3,5mm with GREAT sound quality, however without microphone in the adapter, thus I always need to unplug the adapter and take off the headphones to answer a call - sucks!
As mentioned so far i Only saw one adapter on ebay WITH a microphone in the adapter piece (and clip on the back) - but do not know how it performs...

2.5 mm to 3.5 mm adapters at Radio Shack
Beware of the Radio Shack adapters. They stick out and are easy to catch on a doorway as you walk through it. I did so a few weeks ago and the headphone jack no longer worked. The adapter male end bent back and damaged the phone female socket. The result was very quiet sound from the headphone jack, totally unusable for phone or music.
I sent the phone back to T-Mobile and they very kindly sent me a replacement. I bought a new Radio Shack 2.5mm male to 3.5 mm female adapter and the same day proceeded to catch it on another doorway, bending back the male plug, and damaging the phone female headphone jack. No sound again from the headphone jack. I will stay away from the headphone adapters from now on.
Phone speaker not working after using headphones - No sound
I had a similar problem (not the same). After using a 2.5 to 3.5 mm adapter my phone speakers and the mic didn't work anymore. I was about to send the device in, when I read about a solution (I think it was in XDA-Dev somewhere).
You'll have to gently move the headphone jack forward and back, twisting it a litte or even better use some compressed air blowing into the jack. It works best, if you to take out the battery and blow from the back.
My speakers work again, but the same thing happens now and then. It seems there is some switch inside the headphone/mic jack, which doesn't go back. That only happens when I use the adapter.
I realize that this is an old thread, but here is an idea for you. As far as I know, pretty much any 2.5mm headset should work. I don't use it for my phone personally, but I recently purchased a Plantronics Gamecon X20 headset for my Xbox 360 after my old one broke. Since it has a plain 2.5mm jack on the end, I thought I would plug it into my phone to see how well it worked. The answer, pretty well apparently. My wife said that it was really clear and, likewise, she sounded really clear on my end. It's going to be a little larger than the ones that have the mic hanging down inline with the wire, but on the other hand, since it's a boom mic the sound quality should be superior with less noise. I haven't tried it for listening to music so I can't vouch for the quality there, but since you are wanting a monaural headset I rather doubt that is relevant anyways. The headset was only $20 at GameStop and they had a used one for $10.

In your case, I would say that sounds like a bad adapter. I routinely use one in mine and don't have that problem. It's one of those nasty stick adapters though, so you have to be careful with them. I've seen some cable type adapters for not too much so you might look into one of those instead.

HERE IS AN/THE ANSWER.
My WIZA200 and Sony P900 phone the mic headsets are compatable, even the answer button works. If you cant find what your looking for under the flavour WIZa or HTC etc... just look for what you need as a P900 type and you will be sorted.

Glad to see Sony and HTC used a more logical system and seem to stick to it. I suspect the HTC Touch HD 3.5mm is wired the same as the Wiza 2.5mm system just 3.5mm jack not 2.5mm jack.
Someone should make a 2.5mm 4pole to 3.5mm 4 pole converter to use old cherised headsets on the HTC Touch HD... know of any, anyone?

Another solution.....
I know this might sound odd but a simple solution is get your stereo headset & mic thing and cut the right earpiece lead off...
Now you may have to strip the wire a bit and wrap a piece of insulating tape to stop the wires inside touching, which will cause problems (crackling or loss of audio on remaining speaker most likely). Once the wires are safely insulated away, youll have what you are seeking, a monaural one earpiece mic heaset... saves having to buy one that your finding hard to do.
Seems a shame to sacrifice a stereo headset down to mono, but if thats your poison, go for it.

Get out the soldering iron and make a frankenstien. I grafted a 3.5 female to my old nokia's pop port so I could hook it to my stereo (before I got a BT adapter) and to my amplified helmet speakers (that were sorced from a computer speaker set.) Before I lost the phone I was planning to add a 2.5 mono female socket for a lil clip-on mic I have. Point being, it's only 3 signals and a ground, should be able to come up with something.

Yeah having a go is definately worth it. I just utilised the pinouts.ru stuff and a bit of personal common sense knowledge of the wirings and managed to make myself a 3.5 touch hd 4 pole jack into a 3.5 3 pole jack which works ofr my aircraft. I can now fly and make calls through my pilots headset. It shows it can work. You arent dealing with any dangerous voltages... its all piddly "put it on your tongue and you wont get hurt" voltages... speakers and mics... all easy to work out. Worth having a go.
I plugged my headphones in for the first time today and i realized that the left side was quieter than the right. And I unplugged it and replugged it in and it was fine. Then I tried it again and the left side was lower again. I'm not sure what's causing this or if my tablet is defective. But it seems like a hit or miss on getting even volume from both sides.
Anyone else having this problem or can test it out?

For me this only happened when I use my SGS2 headphones on Nook.
Actually, I found that SGS2 headphones only work well on the SGS2. With my laptop they have tons of noise, on nook sometimes I have uneven volume.
Although on SGS2 they have the best sound I've ever heard in headphones..

Yes I too have that problem. Glad to see that it's not just me & mine.
Stupid question - for those having issues, have you tried wiggling or rotating the plug once it is plugged in? Sometimes I find if I have a spot of oxidization on the plug it will cause said uneven volume. It could explain the difference that occurs when you unplug/plug back in.
Another thing to try would be to plug them in when the device is asleep to see if that helps. If there is anything that tries to reduce the "pop" of the sound of plugging in the headphones it *might* affect how they sound after the fact.
Just grasping at straws here based on my experience with other devices.
I was having this problem until I realized I only had my headphones plugged in half way. Don't mean to be a jerk, but have you tried plugging your headphones in just a little further?

no amount of fiddling with the plug helped me at all still have the issue and its annoying since the speaker isnt loud enough when I am out and about.
Another thing to consider - another issue I've had with certain device/headphone combos is that some headphone jacks either don't have a long enough plug or the plastic jacket of the jack interferes just enough with the plug in the device to affect sound (essentially related to downsay's comment). Try a cheap pair of 'phones from the dollar store with a simple jack and see if the problem persists. If so, perhaps the device is defective...

Edit: Plugging the headphones in while the device was asleep seems to have fixed the issue for me for now. Sound is equal in both cans now
I have tried 4 different earphones, they have been plugged in all the way. Some people have no problem, so I'm beginning to think this is a hardware defect. I'm going to exchange mine and will let you guys know if there is a difference. I'll also try out the display model and see if it suffers from this problem.

I replaced my Nook twice partially due to this issue. Same problem on all three and it's always the left channel that is not connecting properly. I have found that I can get a good connection by plugging the jack in slowly. I think this is more a software issue than a hardware issue.
Yea just exchanged my tablet as well and the same issue is there as well as the one at the store. Plugging in slowly does help. Just before it engages the last click, if you hear both channels you're golden. Hopefully this is a software issue because it seems to be random. Unfortunately the one I exchanged has a creaking case, so now back to exchange again.
I stopped by Radio Shack this afternoon and purchased a $5 female to male 1/4" stereo connector. It seems to have solved the problem. I had similar problem years back with an iPaq PocketPC. Due to the shape of the hole on the iPaq/Nook, the headphone/earphone connector isn't inserting deeply enough.
Another solution would be to use something like a Dremel Mototool and shave away some of the excess material on the headphone/earphone adapter, so it can insert a little bit deeper.

What is everyone testing their audio on? The stock media player? Video (what program)? Is it on every application you try?
I haven't had any issues with audio in games, websites or MX player at all other than a loudish pop when some programs start up, but I'm using a set of Denon stereo headphones (so, good (large/long, gold) headphone plugs on it, jiggling the connection does nothing).
So I installed Neutrino on my Atrix yesterday (I'm not sure if that's relevant or not, but I figure it's good to know), and everything was working perfectly fine. However, earlier today the audio from my headphone jack started to sound completely distorted.
It's not the earbuds, because they work on other devices I have. And the audio from my speakers and from HDMI works perfectly fine.
Has anyone had this problem, and if so, is there any way I can fix it? Or is my phone screwed?
Did you play with equalizer settings any (DSPmanager or similar)?
I didn't. At least, not at first.
DSP Manager actually started to crash on startup about the same time that the audio from my headphones would be a problem. I thought reinstalling it would fix the problem, but it hasn't. Though, the louder I make it, the more "clearly" I can hear what I'm playing (it still sounds like satan farts, though).
I also tried cleaning the headphone jack, but that only helped a slight bit.
Would it be worth reinstalling Neutrino or is my phone died?
I'd say it's worth a shot. Make a nandroid, do a full wipe, and then flash your ROM. If that doesn't help, then at least you can be fairly sure it's not the software.

I'm not sure, but it sounds like what you're hearing is the difference between the 2 channels, rather than the channels themselves. This would happen if the common ground connection is broken somewhere in the audio out. It's an easy theory to test really. All you need is an audio file that plays on either the left or right channel only. If you have sound out of both channels, then there's your problem, if not, then it's something else.
Actually, this sounds like a poor connection that is overcompensated by extreme loudness so that some of the electric current is strong enough to pass through. I've heard what the "no common ground" sounds like many times, I don't think this is it.
The headphone connector is not actually soldered to the PCB but instead sits on it on springy contacts (makes for very easy repairs and replacements at service centers). I'm almost willing to bet there lies your problem.

Maybe. But if that is the case, wiggling the plug may give some indication of that without disassembling the device, just as would playing a single channel file. In both cases, the jack would likely be the culprit, but given how fragile the device is internally, taking it apart should be done with extreme caution.

I tried playing a mono sound file, and sound files that play through only the left speaker and only the right speaker. They all sound like they have the same problem, so we can rule that out.
Though, I will mention that the sound that is heard is on maximum volume, and that's the only time I can hear anything at all. If I go down just two notches, then I start to hear nothing.

Just a thought, but have you tried another pair of headphones?
Edit: if the headphones are good, then the only other thing I can think of is a bad section in the audio chip. The schematic shows the headphone output is separate from any of the other sound outputs, so it is possible that the chip is bad. Unfortunately, if that is the case, the cheapest solution would be to replace the main board, but it's a delicate procedure.

Yeah, I'm sure it's not the headphones. I've got two; a set of headphones and a set of ear buds. Both of them are functional in other devices but do not work in the phone. Also, the audio clip was direct feed with a different chord, so the problem is surely with the phone.
I'm at the point where I'm willing to open up the phone to see if there is a problem with the jack itself. If it is corrosion or another problem with the jack then I can try some repairs. If I do have to replace the main board then I'll probably wait on that and ultimately purchase a new phone.
One thing to note is that the audio quality does not improve if I move the jacks around inside of it. However, I do hear a sort of rubbing sound from the headphones if I am moving it around.

If the jack is the issue then it shouldn't be too bad to replace. I was looking at different websites earlier and they look to be really cheap. The thing I have to stress though is just be careful, and don't take apart the phone unless you can replace the phone itself just in case something should go horribly wrong. I know that should be pretty obvious, and generally people tend to underestimate their own skill level, but I have encountered a few people in my time who have what I consider to be the opposite of the Midas touch, and their attempts at repairing anything end up as more of a hate crime against the very thing they are trying to fix.
Whenever I connect my phone to my car stereo via AUX, I'll have to unplug/re-plug the cable multiple times for it to register. Basically, it'll continue to play through the phone speaker(s) instead of coming through the stereo. I've tried multiple music players & even tested the cable itself on my old Rezound & iPod and it's working fine with them(it's not the cable).
Is there some setting to fix this?
May sound stupid, but do you have a case that may be keeping the plug from going all the way in.

and no, it's a soft case with enough room around the jack. the cable plugs in securely.
When mine is connected with no case I get a constant fuzzy static noise unless I hold the side where the red grill is then it goes away
What Rom are you running? Is it stock unrooted or a custom Rom, if rooted what kernel are you running?

I should have mentioned... just got the phone a few days ago. It's still stock everything(haven't bothered unlocking/rooting/etc yet)
I had this same issue two months back. I did two things, i don't remember which did it.
Take a cotton swab and put a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol on it. Stick it in the aux port. Don't overuse the alcohol. Next, blow into the aux port. I had a small hair inside the port, causing the headphone jack/aux to not register.
I tried flashing several roms before i found out the simple issue lol. Let me know if this helps, my friend.

I think this is it. My phone did it yesterday and today. Both times I unplugged it, blew in the aux hole and on the stereo cable, and then it worked. Probably small piece of hair or dust in there.
This shouldn't be a problem with a new phone, but on previous phones/mp3 players I owned (ones that actually fit into a pocket) I ended up having to clean the inside of the aux plug with a paper clip (or any small thin object that wont break in there) from all the pocket lint that gathered in it.
well i tried cleaning the slot but it didn't help.
i have noticed that if i leave the screen on, plug in the cable & wait a few seconds, it registers.
any other way and it doesn't really work well/at all.

My headphone jack has been fine since I bought the phone on release day, well yesterday after a walk, I pulled the headphone plug from the jack and noticed my music was still playing but through the phone speaker... weird.
well in my friends car I wanted to use her aux input and it didn't register (aka show the headset icon in status bar), nor did it play through the car, only the phone speakers...
same thing when I tried in my car. Also tried again with the iBeats I used when it first happened... nothing.
I tried the cotton swab thing (most cotton swabs are too think though xD) and used compressed air to blow any hairs or specs out of it...
I can get headphones to register now, but I have to plug it in veerryy sloowwllyy ... :/

Today I've noticed that the left speaker of my headphones doesn't work when I plug them to my Mini Pro. I moved from CM10.2 to SJB 8.0 and found this out while testing stuff out. It's been some time since I've used my phone as a music player last time, but I never had any problems like this. Reverting to CM didn't help either.
I can't really find out whether this is a hardware or software issue. I think connector isn't dirty, wiggling the plug doesnt make any difference. Is there anything more I can try, besides flashing stock firmware? Did anybody have a similar problem?
EDIT: I've connected my PC to the phone as a BT headset, both channels work fine there.
What headphone do you own? Most new headphones with mic won't work correctly on 2011 xperia. Those new headphones use CTIA, our phone uses OMTP. Long story short, you can only use stock headset or the ones without mic. You could buy OMTP to CTIA converter though. Look up on eBay.

I use only standard stereo headsets, namely Creative Aurvana Live and Creative EP630.
They looked compatible to me. Maybe cleaning phone jack with alcohol would help, I don't know. Sorry

Thanks for your input either way. I have tried cleaning the jack with isopropyl alcohol, and also just in case left the phone without battery for some time (because why not).
The strange thing about this is I'm getting absolutely no sound whatsoever on the left channel, while the right one works like a charm. If i'd get any noise while moving the jack around, it would be pretty obvious sign of bad soldering, and therefore a HW problem.
I still struggle with this problem. I have tried downgrading software to stock GB, didn't help. I've took it to some service centre, the folks there have replaced the jack, but it didn't help either. I wonder if i should pump any more money into this.
