Noob with a question.
I'm curious about the Moto Z's compatibility with magnetic mounts like the Tech Matte MagGrip. I know that the Moto Mods use magnets to stay in place, but do they interfere with magnetic mounts? Is there space to slip the MagGrip plate (or similar) between the phone and a Style Mod? Would the plate even work through a Style Mod (or a Battery Mod for that matter)? Should I have posted this in the Moto Z accessories board? I'm hoping that since the Z seems to be in hands of reviewers they might have magnetic mounts as well they can test it out on; (and further hoping those reviewers are going to see this question and answer it)? Did I totally mess up on that usage of a semicolon? Oh man, am I rambling?
Thanks in advance.

nop, flashing another firmware than original won't unlock the SIM. You will have to wait till some pages, like simunlock or similar will find the way to unlock it, and pay for the code. Here in Mexico there's a law that if you buy your phone in cash you carrier (AT&T in your case) have to unlock it for free. If your phone is in contract or subsidized you have to wait till the end of your contract. here, you can read all about it http://www.poderpda.com/editorial/nom-184-scfi-2012-liberando-tu-equipo-por-ley/
PS. Try to sell it and buy it on Amazon, mine is SIM unlocked and Double SIM ready!!!!

I don't believe you can, even though the Z manual says it supports it.

Does anyone here play WWE SUPERCARD? This game allows me to play for a couple of minutes then freezes up my MOto Z force..When it does it automatically reboots the phone ..Just wondered if it did it to the MOTO Z version too...If not I might try to trade someone ..

Procesor and gpu
Hey everyone, got a UK model xt1650-03 moto z I bought from eBay, and after running CPU-Z I found that my CPU max clock speed is at 1,82 GHz, while I've seen videos on YouTube with Verizon versions showing 2,15 GHz, GPU is off too, on Erica Griffin's video she has it at 624 MHz, but mine is only 510, so I wonder if I'm the only one or if it's a common thing that UK phones are underclocked, so please check for your self and share the info here, really interested in what is this all about. Yeah and by the way, is it just me or scrolling in play market is just awful on these phones?

Hello,
I bought an almost new, opened box xt1650-03 dual sim version, which unfortunately doesn't fully work with our home wifi internet access (while our other three android devices don't have any problem):
Setting up the phone it asks for mobile net and wifi (as usual). I set up home wifi access, and then nothing: timeout error, it cannot connect to google services (to set up my personal google account with my address & pw). I only can skip it. But while Play Store & orher services are not working with Moto Z, browsing with Chrome working.
I also have access to a wifi network that has very weak signal at home (same ISP: client's who share their router - not their bandwidth - with other clients: so we can get access even in other towns where another client of the ISP who share it's router - but no one allowed to use this other service on his/her own home router hence the weak signal).
So with that wifi access, the Play Store works. But that's a weak signal as comes from the neighbors routers, almost useless.
Tried most of the things I found, none worked: hard resetting, formatting cache partition, deleting app cache, restoring to original version, etc. (cannot root it because of warranty loss, so the obvious ROM change N/A this time), still have the problem: while I can browse with Chrome fine, Google Play Store, and services or apps that rely on that, not working.
Build: MPL24.246-45
My old Moto G (falcon with nougat 7.1) works flawlessly, Nexus 7, PC, laptop, etc. works too, just the XT1650 has the problem...
Thanks for any clues!

Hello,
I wanted to ask that could MODEL NO MOTO Z FORCE(XT1650-4)DUAL SIM.3GB DDR4 RAM.32GB*be bootloader unlocked. I guess it's Verizon or may be not. Someone is selling that but it says not for sale on front. Not sure what to do. Kindly guide.

Has anyone had issues with android file transfer to transfer music from a macbook to the moto z? I can't seem to get transfer anything to the moto z. Whenever the transfer starts i immediately get an error message that says
"Can't Access Device Storage. If your device's screen is locked, disconnect its USB cable, unlock your screen, and then reconnect the USB cable."
Device was already unlocked and switched to MTP

Are you getting a prompt which asks you to allow the connection with the computer?
Do allow this connection so that you can copy/transfer files.

I suspect I've found the answer to this already, but maybe I overlooked something simple. I have an eye condition and I need to be able to dim my phone in low light we'll beyond normal capabilities. I just got the Moto Z and love everything about it except the capacitive buttons, which cause me some serious pain in low light. I have a Verizon phone, so the bootloader is locked down, but I was hoping someone knows of an app that might trick those buttons into dimming.

What is a force encryption, and what does it do?
There is the head for this in the ROM section, and I'm not able to root my device. Is there something to do with this?

I tried a couple apps (make sure they didn't require root) Best solution I could find was using Screen filter / Twilight with GMD Full Screen Immersive.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gmd.immersive
Far from perfect but when the Navbar is minimised Twilight works on the whole screen. So only bright lights when you need to use a button rather than all the time, hope this helps.

[Q] branding on WiFi only

Hi,
I've looked for an answer to this question but can't seem to find one. I have bought a second hand xperia tablet z which is WiFi only. However it has an annoying and slow O2 splash page / welcome screen and a small amount of bloatware.
Am I right in thinking that I need to go through the usual rooting / unlocking process to remove these? My worry with this is that any tools etc I use would be for a 3g/LTE model and might therefore not work or brick the device.
Has anyone had experience with this? Any info would be greatly received.
It seems odd that the tablet should be branded in the first place

to root device you don't have to unlock it. Tools for wi-fi model are the same as for LTE model. Here's a video tutorial, on how to root the tablet.

Galaxy S6 Edge keeps resetting Media Volume

Hi all,
Apologies if this question/issue has already been discussed, but I did search the forums and couldn't find anything specific to the issue I've been encountering.
I know that when you first boot up/restart your S6 Edge, the typical volume warning pops up when you try to increase the volume with headphones plugged in, but I've been encountering an issue where my Edge's volume will abruptly drop back down to the 'safe' volume (even after dismissing the warning) when I have my headphones in. A basic example is me turning up the volume louder while walking in a loud area (e.g. near heavy traffic) and while walking the volume will reduce and, upon trying to increase it, I'm hit with the volume warning again.
This has only occurred twice since I've had the phone, and I bought it about a month and a half ago (if memory serves), so it's hard to really know if there's any specific thing that's triggering this. Perhaps worth noting is that I also encountered this same issue once before with my Galaxy S4 (phone I owned prior to the Edge).
I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this issue and knows whether it's a glitch or some additional 'safety' feature Samsung may have added with a firmware update? If it's the latter, then I'll just accept it; but if it's an actual glitch, any ideas on how to resolve it (short of rooting) would be appreciated. Given it's happened on two Samsung phones, I just can't tell whether it's a glitch or some new feature.
Thanks for your help.
Media Volume
Hello,
I have a similar issue with my s6 edge, also about a month old. The difference is my volume turns down to safe volume while playing via bluetooth and works fine with headphones. Every time I listen with bluetooth the media volume turns down within 10-30 minutes. When i turn it back up it sometimes immediately drops back down and other times waits several minutes before dropping to "safe volume". This issue drives me crazy so I called Samsung and was told it is a new safety feature with the edge and there is no way to disable it, which i have trouble believing because i can't find anybody else on the web complaining about this. If anybody else has had this issue before please tell me what to do to disable. I CANT HEAR MY MUSIC!!
Thank you, Mark
Have the same problem when i listen to music in my car via aux, the volume just drops randomly to a barely audible volume. When i put it back up, it can take 2 minutes to happen again or not at all. I just restored my phone to factory and have the same problem. I'm sure samsung are aware though
On my 3rd S6 after some issues with my other two. Now this one is having the volume issue when plugged into headphones and Bluetooth. I don't get the loud volume warning, volume just decreases. Happens often. If I have to get a 4th S6 I think I'll be done with this phone forever.

I don't think replacing you S6 will do any good. I'm pretty sure this a software problem. Maybe one app we all have installed is interfering with the volume, seems the most logical explanation to me.

It does seem to be a software issue, but it wasn't an issue I had on the previous phones I had. And I don't have any apps on the phone now that I didn't have before, and narrowing down what app we all have that might be the culprit would be incredibly difficult. I've thought about doing a factory reset, but it's so much work to get the phone back up and running.

You forgot one important part. While you might have the same apps, and you might not have had the issue before, the S6 is a COMPLETELY different phone from any previous. First 64bit Samsung, first LPDDR4 RAM, first desktop grade SSD, there are a lot of firsts for the S6. And because of all that, the software had to be completely recoded, and somewhere, somehow, some engineer forgot a comma or an exclamation mark in a line of code and because of that, we are all stuck with that problem until someone finds the origin or samsung patches the bug.
P.S. I've done 2 factory resets in the past 2 week, problem is still here.

Ive also reset my phone several times, but this has been an issue since it came out of the box. Just like previous galaxy phones some people experience the problem and some don't. Samsung is no help at all on the issue, like I stated, they tried to tell me its a safety precaution which is complete bogus. Why would some s6's do it and others not, also why even give me the option to turn it up if the software is coded to purposely turn it back down. Completely insane. This will be my last Samsung because I dont enjoy being bull****ted on.

Hey man, don't be frustrated because Samsung, and all other major corporations, use tech illiterate agents that follow a script and click on symptoms on their screen as you tell them and offer you, surprise surprise, a generic solution that probably has nothing to do with anything. Those agents are good for old people thats want to know where to connect the wifi cable, or very tech illiterate people, anybody on XDA (or almost) probably has more experience. Thats why I ALWAYS, ALWAYS ask to be put through to level 2 when calling tech support. And if the agent forces you to speak to him before he can escalate the call, just tell them: "My problem is every time a notification appears, my binary systools interfere with the syntax of the coding lines within the mainframe proxy network in a category 6E cable". At that point, he will transfer you., trust me.
Also, when small bugs like these appear with a small number of users, it is pretty much impossible for anybody to help you if the problem is not common enough. Out of maybe the 20 users on XDA, and just for the sake of the argument, 100 other forum users posting about this, how many of us will actually contact Samsung to report the problem. I have had terrible service over the phone, but one day i tweeted Samsung USA and was able to go through an entire support case on twitter. I had problem with the samsung wireless multimedia speakers with hub, and my problem was not a known problem, and with my help reporting the right information to the agent on twitter, they were able to patch the problem on the next firmware release. I was quite amazed on how their twitter support was knowledgeable.

They have already responded to my twitter request but I think they might direct me to Samsung Canada. The problem is their support is far from being as active as the american one, so any american care to join my chat with them?

Hey guys, just wanted to update on what i have going on with my edge volume...I also sent a message to samsung on polish pat's convo...I was told to ship it in for further evaluation and repair. I removed sim card and had phone deactivated from carrier, after this i tested my phone and the issue has not happened since, previously i could not go 3 songs without it turning my volume down, now ive gone hours without it happening. This leads me to believe it must be the fact that it is deactivated or a bad sim card. Tomorrow i will re insert the sim card and see what happens if nothing occurs i will go have it re activated and see if thats what is causing the issue for me. I'll keep you guys updated.
This issue is so random...some guy said he disabled S-Voice and Car Mode and it worked. I don't even have car mode and have disabled S-Voice since day 1. I have not seen the problem in a few days. Been using Google music a lot and streaming my library instead of having it on the phone. Previously most of my issues were with the stock music player but since I restored my phone i didn't sync my music back and have been using only streaming. I did encounter the issue at first with Spotify but have not been listening to music a lot lately so it just might be that.
If you guys have discovered other situations that bring the issue back, please post here and on the Twitter convo with Samsung
Media Volume
Put the SIM card back in 30 min ago and volume has decreased once. Thats not as much as was happening but it tells me something must be up with my SIM card....I will continue observing and let you all know what happens. If it continues decreasing volume i plan on visiting my carrier later today to inquire about a new SIM card. That should be interesting.

Yes, Samsung are surprisingly awesome at helping client on Twitter. I would have never thought. This is the third time i reach out to them for help and the've been very helpful all the times. Sure, it can take a lot more time to solve the issue as one reply can take a few hours, but it beats speaking with the Indian folks that follow a basic troubleshooting guide on a computer screen and offer the most illogical solutions
Continued issues
Wow, I've been so busy recently that I didn't even have time to jump on here and see the number of responses that have occurred. Suffice to say, it looks like I must have some sort of variation of this issue.
I guess the only thing worth pointing out is that I also had this issue once on my Galaxy S4. A couple of friends suggested that perhaps it was my headphones causing the issue, so I switched over to a different, newer pair. I thought all was going well until yesterday when, 22 days after switching to these headphones on my S6 Edge, the volume decreased to 'safe' level and the high volume warning popped up when I went to turn it up again.
From what I've seen here, though, it affects everyone differently. Some it's constant, some it's very random; some it's for headsets, others it's for Bluetooth, etc. This has to be some sort of software bug and I think I might've just been unlucky to get it on both phones. When I spoke to Samsung they said to factory reset it in case of Malware, but I don't really buy that I could get identical Malware on both phones (and on the S6 Edge within a two-week window of purchase) and the way it manifests itself is through occasionally reducing my phone's volume only when headphones are connected. That seems a little, uh, too specific and pointless for malware to me, haha. I'm not the most tech-savvy, though, so any additional thoughts are welcome - even thoughts related to the possibility of Malware. I just really don't want to have to start my phone from scratch again.
I guess that, for now, all I can do is hope it doesn't get worse (some of you are having a far worse time than I am, which sucks) and that Samsung does roll out some sort of fix. I'm keeping an eye on the Twitter conversation polish_pat started. Have any of you managed to resolve the issues you've been having with the volume resetting/reducing?

So I purchased a Z4 SGP771 to use as both a laptop and phone replacement. Works wonderfully for me; although the KB is a bit small for continuous use, it's fine for my purposes.
However, I got overeager and went through the steps to unlock the bootloader in anticipation of rooting the device (which I haven't yet done) and now I've got some issues I'm hoping the good people here can help with.
1. I'm still running the original stock rom it shipped with: 5.0.2
2. I can't get screen mirroring with miracast to work with my bravia tv - specifically I get an error saying that the TV doesn't support HDCP. On the sony support forums, they specifically mention unlocking the bootloader being an issue here. And yes, the TV in question is Wi-Di capable. The tablet can see it, and the TV even has a built in mirroring input setting - the tablet just fails to make the connection.
3. I was able to get remote play to work with my PS4 briefly - it displayed on my Z4's screen very nicely. Now however, I can't get it to do anything but display a grey screen with on-screen controls (like the tablet is being used as a large and clumsy dual-shock controller). To be honest, I cannot remember if the remote play feature was working after I unlocked or not. RL work became very busy and I was unable to take advantage of the remote play option for several days. When I got back to it, it just wasn't working.
Generally speaking, everything else is still running fine. I believe I can fix #1 on my own, but I'm baffled on #2 and #3 without sending it back to Sony for a true repair/relock.
So anybody got any suggestions?

So a bit of an update is in order. After checking in with Sony directly - just a query on their "if you return it for service you may be charged a significant fee, since you've modified the tablet" quote - and they informed me that "yeah, you can't return it at all, sorry no dice, thanks for playing." I went ahead and at least did a full system backup and reboot.
Surprise, surprise, Remote Play works again. I've got significant lag over my router, but I think that's a function of the router, not anything to do with the tablet. So #3 just up and fixed itself. Yay for that.
Screen mirroring is still fubar however. This ultimately isn't a major issue since it isn't something we were aiming to do very often anyway. We only attempted it during a recent soccer game broadcast that wasn't being carried on any of the stations I subscribe to through my cable provider, but was available streaming. So #2 isn't fixed yet, and that does seem to be a direct result of unlocking. I can live with it, but finding a solution would be preferable.

Yes miracast will fail if you unlock.
At least for test devices it is possible to enable it again afterwards but I don't know about retail ones. In any case I'm pretty sure you can't do it via EMMA so I don't think simple Sony service points can do that.
I'll try to find out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/help/fix-hdcp-error-miracast-ezcast-screen-t3123560
... helped me with the miracast problem! Addedt the Values in /system/etc/wfdconfig.xml and build.prop, ran terminal command as in post #6 and voila .... screen mirroring is working on my samsung f6500
Hope it helps ....
Cheers

How does it work on test device?
If it is differ from above link's fix, it's really interesting.

If I remember correctly it changed something in the TA partition with an internal tool SONY Mobile has.
But that was quite some time ago - a couple of years.

Anyone been able to do anything with a Facebook Portal?

Been looking at the Facebook Portal, it's got a USB-C port on the back but according to Facebook's support it's only used "in the factory", so I'm assuming maybe that's something they might use with a flashing tool to reset damaged units. Has anyone messed around with one/found out anything about how it might work? I've noticed that, at least with mine, if I hold down power and the volume up button while it's booting, the screen remains black but the mic light is still on. Thinking this may be some kind of recovery mode perhaps.
Wow, you bought one? I can't imagine.

Oh definitely not. Wouldn't be caught dead buying one. XD Was gifted one as an early christmas gift by a friend, but trying to decide if it's something I can do anything with before I maybe... return it and get a better alexa-enabled device. Feeling really bad about that though considering they wanted to use it to communicate.
Ah-ha! Alexa enabled, but what powers it? Is it some open source thing? AOSP even?

From what I’ve been able to gather, it’s running on some form of AOSP with a custom Portal skin- haven’t been able to get much more info than that though as the info on the device past what FB has put out publicly is pretty slim. Definitely doesn’t surprise me that it’s an android device though considering that’s just about all FB seems to develop for outside of the web (Oculus Go, Facebook Home, etc.)
Would be really interesting to try using Discord on this device though, and possibly finding a way to disable FB functions. Might make it a good gift then, if not it’s making it really hard to hold onto it.
Edit: This is my source for AOSP, assuming it’s the “Android Open Source Framework” mentioned:
https://techcrunch.com/2018/10/08/facebook-portal/amp/
I got my hands on one (free gift from company) but I'm trying to figure out what to do with it too.
Hello everyone, sorry I am late to the party. It is definitely android. If you run the chromium browser and attempt to open something like a pdf file, chromium will give you an error and ask for download permissions. This error message also gives you a link to the applications settings page from where you get access to some of the settings. No permissions sadly. You can however go in to the battery optimization settings and filter for all apps and get a full list of everything installed. As can be seen in these images on imgur /a/QWqs0pP

We're stoked. We've been using the 15 inch Portal in our conference room. Hooked up a usb-c to HDMI adapter, ran it to our conference room 4K television and bam! Absolutely gorgeous.
Works flawlessly as an output, and even audio (as would be expected) is now running through the monitor.
Oh niiiice ! I actually asked facebook portal customer support, and they said nothin could be done with the usb c port ! It really is a shame cuz some people probably want to output to a bigger screen !
I want to try if usb c headphones and microphones will work. I don't have any around though !
I've tested and seen that I can use the port as a usb c PD charger, it charges my macbook pro and oneplus 6
Maybe we can figure out a way to use ADB to get us into the portal ?
---------- Post added at 05:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:51 PM ----------
Oh wait, never mind charging my macbook pro. It does so only intermittently, I should've guessed the power was too low !
So, any luck unlocking the bootloader or even getting ADB out the USB-C ?

USB-C to 3.5 mm audio only alternate mode?
Can anyone please test and let me know if a USB-C to 3.5mm analog audio jack also works - for 3.5 mm jack headphones or speaker out? More specifically, an active adapter because a passive one may not work. Such as this one: amazon.com/Tranesca-Headphone-Adapter-Compatible-Google/dp/B07M6Z2KJ4
What I do know from reading this thread is the Facebook Portal's:
- USB-C Video out (DisplayPort Alternate mode) to monitor works along with audio (monitor passthrough)
- It works as a USB-C power delivery charger
But if audio thru DisplayPort works means only audio to 3.5 mm jack will also work?
Interestingly, the official documentation (portalfb.me/2NAdtz1) claims the audio will continue to come from Portal's speakers. But people here claim it is transmitted to the monitor?
the portal burnt due to an electricity hazard overseas.
I just bought the newest Facebook Portal Mini. it comes with a browsers from Facebook. I was able to make a phone call using duo.google.com then the next day.. I lost permission to the camera: it keeps asking me for permissions.
I think they have some kind of firewall that blocks unusual behaviors

I don't really know how to do those things... But it tried scanning my portal for open ports, no ip adp connection possible. And then, with usb c connected nothing happens with adb. It can't seem to see it !
I tried enabling hidden developpers options by pressing a lot everywhere in the settings, but no luck !
Alrighty, I've got an update for you guys. It seems like FB locked out that PDF trick sadly. However, I found out that if you restart your portal and hold all three buttons down, then plug in the USB-C, it appears as a device named "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM3)". Based on what I've seen on a few threads here, that's a utility for reflashing and backing up device firmware. I believe we may be able to do stuff with this.
I am looking into getting the FB Portal TV. If the party on the other end of the connection is using their smart phone or tablet, does the image I am seeing become altered from wide screen to a vertical image
or does the unit adapt to keep the screen filled without becoming distorted in some way?

Have you been able to find out anything more with the qualcomm loader? I have been playing with mine and unable to get a utility to recognize is. It would be nice to be able to get get the fw off it.

I have not made any progress at all. I keep checking to see if anyone has done anything at all, but I think these devices are not too popular. Hard to find any information on them at all
So I was able to get fasboot access to my Facebook Portal+ (1st Gen).
If you plug in the power and hold down the vol down + power button. It will show the portal logo on the screen and on a black box it says "Please Reboot...". If you connect to the usb-c port then it looks like there is fastboot access to the device. It's definitely locked down, but it's a start.
I've been trying to figure out how to get adb / sideload access for a while now and this is as close as I've been able to get. I'll let you know if I find out more.

Polycom Trio 8800 Conference Phone - how can I edit the boot image?

Hi everyone!
It's been a while since I last fiddled with Android, more than a decade!
But I think I found a nice little project that I'll try to document here.
So far bricked it, tore it apart, found UART and managed to unbrick it.
I could really need some help to try and edit the boot image!
So I recently got my hands on a Polycom Conference phone...

It's a nice handsfree device that I now use as a USB speakerphone and SIP client on my desk at home.
And it's running Android, so it cannot be left untouched!!!
My goal is to root it, maybe be able to install some additional apps on it and ideally retain these things with a current software update - more on that later.
My starting point:
The device has its own launcher and is unfortunately completely locked down.
No ADB, no custom apps, no browser, no nothing.
All I can do is start an internal recovery on boot that will look for a firmware on a USB drive.
It works for one SIP account and can be used as a USB speakerphone.
Pretty boring for what it is, I think.
Some details:
Android 4.4.2, Kernel version 3.0.31
Hardware: bcm911130_pl_rocky_proto2, PolyDSP Merlyn ARMA9, BootBlock 3.0.5.0006 (65290-001), BCM28155 A3 VideoCore
CPU: armeabi-v7a, capri_pl_rocky_proto2
Getting root:
There is a known vulnerability for the device in an older firmware version:
It's described here unkl4b.github.io/Authenticated-RCE-in-Polycom-Trio-8800-pt-1/
While it's not exactly easy to downgrade to this version and should not even be possible according to support documents,
it is in fact possible by starting from the latest 5.9.6.3432 version Polycom still offers and then downgrading via USB in two increments via
5.8.0 AA (downloads.polycom.com/voice/rp_trio/Polycom_UC_Software_5_8_0_15024_AA_Trio8800_release.zip) to the vulnerable version
5.7.1.4145 (downloads.polycom.com/voice/rp_trio/Polycom_UC_Software_5_7_1_4145_AC_Trio8800_release.zip)
Now I can enable Telnet on the device by uploading the following configuration file:
Code:
<telnet diags.telnetd.enabled="1"></telnet>
And then start the process as described, by logging in on port 1023 with Polycom / 456 (or the current Admin password) and starting adbd:
Code:
ping 8.8.8.8 ; setprop service.adb.tcp.port 5555
ping 8.8.8.8 ; stop adbd
ping 8.8.8.8 ; start adbd
After that, I can connect via adb over TCP and open a shell as root. Yay!
Where that leaves me:
I can enable the Android Launcher and use it until the Poly Launcher pops up again every 30 seconds or so via pm enable com.android.launcher
Enabling USB debugging does not work. It disables the TCP connection but no USB connection is possible.
I tried to install APKs over the shell but the Polycom Settings app has a watchdog that deletes everything again immediately.
The setting userAllowed seems to be defined in /data/data/com.polycom.polysettings/shared_prefs/com.polycom.polysettings.PreferencesFile.xml but any changes to this file are just overwritten immediately.
I removed that settings app by remounting /system with mount -o rw,remount /system and renaming /system/app/PolySettings.apk and /system/app/PolySettings.odex.
After killing the process, that unfortunately leads to a popup every second, telling me that the settings app could not be opened.
With a lot of fast tapping it would be possible to start a 3rd party app on the device. Kingoroot did not work, though.
So the remote shell is all I have for now.
I managed to dd everything under /dev/block/ as well as /system, /user and /cache as an image.
Here's where I would really appreciate some help!
Do I even have a chance to make some persistent changes to this phone without tearing it apart?
Any development tools I saw are for much newer Android versions, so if I even have a chance at changing anything, someone pointing me in the right direction (kitchens, tutorials) would be great.
My main machine is a Mac but I have a Windows machine at my disposal.
What should my next steps be?
How can I have a look into what's on the device from the images I pulled?
How would I best approach all the device restrictions?
How can I then make permanent changes, if at all?
Would I have a chance to (partially) upgrade to a newer firmware while keeping it rooted and modded?
I'll keep poking it, the process has been fun so far.
Maybe this will lead to something in the end, maybe not.
Any help is highly appreciated!

I've got about as far as you.....although have managed to prove the telnet can be accessed on the 7.2.3.0852 version also.
If you dowwnload the full .ld software, there is a folder in there called Config, with a file called Global.cfg.
Have a look at that file....there are a lot of flags that can be set/unset. Might be a good place to work from.
Note, i'm on 7.2.3.0852, so I have ssh access but not the ability to execute additional code via ";"
My sim is simply to hsve Spotify on the unit!
Well, this was fast I seem to have bricked the device already.
I tried to unpack the boot.img I got from the device, make a very small change with CarlivImageKitchen (starting adbd) and then write the packed image back to the device.
On reboot I now get the first Polycom screen and that's it.
The 4 finger revovery does no longer work, it's just stuck and does not continue.
Lacking any kind of connection to the device I guess it's time to bin it and move on.
That is, unless anyone has any more ideas on what I could try.
Maybe there's UART lines available?

Will it respond to a ping? May just be the gui/application stack that's crashed.
If so, you may be able to get it to boot from a provisioning server.

I'd have to figure out how to take it apart for this first and then start from scratch with no knowledge, probably including getting all the tools.
Tempting but not sure it's worth it

It does not even react to the 4 finger recovery method any more.
Pretty sure that's way before there is any network. No link.

It no longer reacts to a USB stick and I cannot trigger the recovery as that is not a real recovery but instead part of the boot image. Which I unfortunately messed up.
The bootloader is u-boot but I cannot access it. Config is:
Code:
baudrate=115200bootcmd=if key VOL_UP; then android recovery; else android; fi;bootdelay=1brcm_dt_enable=yesbrcm_dt_size=0x10preboot=vc runwatchdog=off
The volume keys are soft keys, so no luck there either.
Have you tried the micro-usb port to a PC? If it's that screwed it may be in a recovery mode of some sort. Like Qualcomm QFIL for example.
Any ideas what chipset these things run on? They are going so cheap on eBay now that I've just bought another!

I tried but nothing was detected.
I got stuck half way through my teardown attempt after taking out all visible screws.
I fear the display is glued on with more screws underneath, I have no clue how to remove it.
Any ideas?
There's FCC pictures available of the insides of the 8500 <- that's actually an 8800!

I see quite a few unpopulated headers on that board!
If only I could get to them
Alright!
That was some nasty glue, but I finally managed to get it open.
The display is glued on, mostly on the sides. The NFC antenna on the left as well as the soft buttons on the right are glued back and front and need to stay on the display - so currently no idea if they are still ok.
The display connector comes from the back at the top of the display and connects in the lower part. Display needs to be flipped upwards to get to the last screws. As long as any wedging is limited to the left and right sides it is possible to get if off without damaging the display.
I still get the Polycom logo.
Here is some pictures of the bottom of the PCBs.
The last one has the Wifi Board and a curious little connector that is unused.
Could this be a service port?
Now what should I try next?
So I found an old FTDI232 that should work on my Macbook and started checking all of the 4 pin headers for potential UART.
I set the terminal to 115200 8-N-1 with no flow control and connected GND and RX.
I tried for a few seconds each after powering the device.
Unfortunately, I got absolutely nothing apart from some noise on some on them as soon as power was provided.
That port in the image above I have no connector for, it's probably something else anyway.
What else could I try?

Could actually be JTAG as it seems to be double sided, 4 more pins at the top.
Three of them measure 1.8V when powered, the rest seems to be at 0V.
But I have no way of properly connecting to it.
