No Charging through USB or detect external USB pen drive - Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

Hi All,
I'm new to this forum. I have an issue with the USB port on my Xperia Z3 tablet.
It won't charge through the USB port and is not detected by my PC, it also doesn't detect any USB pen / flash drives that are inserted. When the tablet is off and I plug in the charging / data cable a red light appears next to the Sony logo and the battery symbol shows on the middle of the screen but doesn't have the usual lightening bolt icon to indicated charging.
Just so you know I've tried multiple cables that work with my other Xperia tablet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

[Q] USB Cable type for Sony Tablet - specific details

Hi everyone,
and thanks in advance for any help / advice that you may have for me.
I'll start off with my question, before I unload all of my information. I simply would like to know exactly what type of USB Connection the Sony Tablet has, and therefore, what specific USB Cable I need to buy in order to connect it to my PC running Vista.
I bought a Sony Tablet and have been surprised the lack of information in regards to the USB connectivity of the device. Specifically, the exact 'cable type' required to connect the device to a PC. Everywhere I have read so far, it simply says USB Micro, or USB 2.0 micro. But when I try use the micro USB cable that I currently use with my Xperia Play phone (which works fine for PC transfer with the phone) it's doesn't work at all with the Sony Tablet. It doesn't even register on the PC when I plug the cable into the tablet. Just nothing.
Since then, I have read a lot about USB, and found that there are different types, like 'Mini USB' versus 'Micro USB'. Apparently there is also Micro USB 'A' and Micro USB 'B'. And finally, apparently there is 4 pin micro usb and 5 pin micro usb type.
hope this all makes sense, many thanks guys.
Austab.
This tablet uses micro USB, I'm pretty sure the cable for your Xperia should work fine with the tablet. Perhaps you plugged it in upside down?
Thanks for the reply, I agree with your thought train. If it works with the Xperia, then surely it should work with tablet. I'll try it again after work today, and confirm. Is it actually possible to plug the cable in the wrong way around?
I'll kick myself if I did! Thanks again, cheers.
Austab.
It cannot be plugged in upside down, unless you use extreme force and break it.

But yeah, this cable *should work, if it works with your Xperia Play. In principle there is only one kind of micro-USB cable (well, actually it could have either regular type A *OR micro type A connector at one end, but let's keep it simple. Mini-USB is a different kind and A and B are just connector types.
See this picture with different USB connectors:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Types-usb_new.svg
Your cable should have a regular USB A connector (the one on the top left) at one end and micro-USB B connector at the other end (the one on the bottom right).
Yeah, it should work; I'm using the same USB cable that I use with my Xperia Arc.
For what it's worth, I've been having issues too. Mostly windows fails to find the drivers and install them. I've talked to multiple Sony reps and have tried multiple computers but haven't had any luck. Maybe it's a bad cable but I have had Windows detect the device...just unable to install the plug-n-play drivers.
Systems I've tried it on:
Custom built - Windows 7 with Service Pack 1
Dell - Windows XP Service Pack 3
Sony Vaio Laptop - Windows XP Service Pack 3
I had the same problem on both of tablet P and tablet S. I can tell you, its more about luck than the wrong cable type! At the end, it just works after retrying a few plugs and unplugs.
Hope they can get a fix for this soon.
Hey again guys, I've now tried the cable again with my Sony Tablet, and I'm definitely plugging it in correctly. There's no response whatsoever on the tablet or the PC once I've plugged the cable in.
When using the same cable on my Xperia play, the phone will instantly start charging once I plug the cable in to the PC. However, the PC doesn't actually recognize the phone as a device (i.e. it doesn't show up in windows explorer, or launch the Ericsson Phone Software, as it once did). It charges the phone, but doesn't talk to it, if that makes sense.
So it would seem that some Micro USB cables are good for charging only, but not for data transfer / PC recognition.
I'll buy a different cable tomorrow so will let you know if it works then.
Thanks again for all the replies guys I appreciate it.
cheers again,
Austab
Looks like the cable is faulty then and you have to try another one.
I bet one of data wires is broken, or a data contact inside connector is broken (worn down), because when you connect your Xperia Play it should also be recognized as a device.
Then again, maybe there is something wrong with your computer.
Can you try the same cable on another computer, and see if the device is recognized, before you buy a new cable. Or let them check the cable at the store to see if it really is faulty.
My understanding is you need an OTG USB cable, (On The Go) - this is what you need to connect USB keys and other hard-drives and so therefore I would think external PCs too.
I bought a nokia one for around 5 pounds from amazon, do a search for OTG USB cables,
thanks

He wants to connect it to a computer, not connect external devices to it.
So he needs a regular micro-USB cable.
the cable is USB Host finde with this name
People, wtf are you talking?!
He *does not* need USB host (OTG) cable. That's for connecting USB devices, like keyboard, mouse, USB-storage etc., to your tablet.
He wants to connect his tablet to a computer. For that he needs a regular type A USB to type B micro-USB cable.
Hi,
Would seem like op had a charging cable, not data one. As stated, he need a regular data cable with appropriate connectors. OTG has nothing to do with it.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Hi Crazzzik,
so you're saying that there are micro usb cables for charging only, and then there are micro usb cables for data + charging etc? That would explain things perfectly for me, as my cable seems to work for charging devices, but not communicating with a PC (i.e. data transfer).
I'm getting a new cable today - sorted!
Many thanks everyone for your help & advice

Yes when I got the cable for my sony tablet s, I saw several usb cables that would fit the tablet, but on the package it said specifically "for charging only, not meant for data transfer", so they do make the cabkes just for charging, as a PC tech, I was a little embarrassed that I just found this out this weekend.
Thanks
I also got a microUSB-cable adapter, it works fine with usb driver / joypad and keyboard
but not sure if it's capable for connecting with PC or even for charging
hello all,
I recently bought the usb cable for the tablet they sell at the sony store. The micro usb to female normal usb ( I think you know what im talking about). It is sony tablet specific. The micro usb end of the cable is square instead of tappered at one side. it worked fantastic for plugging in and usb deviced to the tablet, but when I tried to plug it into my galaxy s, it wouldn't fit. just thought those thinking of buying one would appreciate the heads up so its not a shock if they try to use it on any other devices. Im sure you can find that same cable at any well stocked computer shop.
i borrowed a htc wildfire s cable, this works and installs drivers.

[Q] i777 micro USB problems - won't connect

I have an i777 (AT&T). I would like to root it. When you connect the micro USB cable, the phone starts to act strangely. First, you cannot charge the phone through the cable (I have to use an external charger and keep switching batteries). When you connect the cable, the phone does the following: every six seconds the black and white battery charging icon appears in the middle of the screen (the one that you see when the phone is off), and stays there for a split second. Then the screen is black until the battery icon appears again. The phone cannot be used while the cable is connected.
There are ways to send files to the phone (Kies Air) that let you work around the cable issue. But does anyone know how to fix this USB cable problem?
Thanks.
DO not charge your phone with it
Seems like your USB port is damaged and you can damage the internal parts by giving a fluctuating power supply
Hi. I have the same problem. Could you fix it? Charging and data transfer can be solved (external battery charger - airdroid) but I do not know how to root it. Is there any wireless way to root the device? Thanks

Charging via PC or with a USB extension cable?

Hi folks!
Is there a way to charge the xperia tablet s with the pc or with an usb extension cable? The tablet refuses to charge either way, with a notification saying to connect to the 'provided' usb/powerpoint adapter to charge. Did a bit of googling and this was the only relevant thread that popped up, for the sony tablet s =/
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
btw, the tablet isn't rooted

To charge the tablet using a PC, the PC's USB port must be specified as being a charging port which can provide the necessary charging amperes. Standard USB ports cannot provide enough amperage to charge the tablet.

Hi!
Some newer laptops have a dedicated charging usb slot mark with a lightning icon.
My laptop (ASUS K55VM) has it, provided the driver for usb charging is installed (ex: ASUS USB Charger Plus 2.0.8)
I am not sure with Desktop PCs.

Honor 7 PLK-UL00 and B341 Device not recognised and its only charging

Hello all,
Honor 7,
PLK-UL00
B341 and EMUI 4.0
Android 6.0
Im unable to use my phone as USB Mass storage device. When i connect my phone to PC sometimes im getting as USB device not recognized and sometimes im not. I tried different PCs and different cables. ITs ONLY CHARGING
tried cleaning the micro usb port, uninstalling and reinstalling drivers in Pcs but it didnt work.
I switched off my phone, removed mem card, reinserted it, swithced it on again, connected my phone to PC(in sleep mode)
phone is detected as storage device and got notification in notification panel to select as charge only/files mode/ photos mode.
After ejecting and removing cable again back to issue. No detection. OTG also not detected. No Data transfers are being made but its only charging( even through Car USB port)
Anybody facing USB not recognised problem ? i hope its software related.
could anyone let me know of solution.
Thanks.
I am also facing the same issue
I thought I was alone in this issue.
Basically, my problem is, the wall charging and USB connect are reversed. i.e., I connect my wall charger, its showing as USB mode and when I connect the cable to a PC, its showing as AC Charging. I tested with Ampere app and when I connect to AC Charger, it is drawing only around 300mA(like it would do if connected to USB) and its drawing around 1.5A(like it would do when connected to wall charger) when connected to USB PC.
I have been having this issue for quite sometime and recently, I had upgraded to Marshmallow through OTA upgrade. I thought atleast this upgrade would fix this issue but I am still facing the same issue. I even contacted the customer care and nothing useful advice other than restoring to factory settings was suggested(which I tried and didn't work).
I guess it should be some software issue but don't know what it is or how to fix it. Any inputs would be welcome.

Mate 20 Pro OTG Power Bug

Another bug i noticed is the OTG. I noticed that there is a limit in terms for power draw a USB-C OTG device can receive from the USB-C port of the Mate 20 Pro. USB Power automatically shutsdown depending on a certain current draw and the scenario is somewhat random. This error has been persistent until now with the current version of the F/W (.126)
Although from the phone notification, "Supplying power to the connected device over USB" is present, you will notice from the LED indicator of device attached to the USB port shuts down right after you plug it. If you attempt to re-plug it, usb power is randomly restored.
I am using a USB-C usb hub with HDMI port as the OTG device. I tested this device with another phone (P10, Samsung, etc), power is stable.
I actually have the some problems reading my otg with a USB drive connected. The connection is intermittent. Sometimes it can read the drive and sometimes it can't. I tried it on my P20 Pro and it's working fine. It will be great if others can try it out and review it here.
I'm on version 9.0.0.183 (patch05). Thanks
No otg problem hdmi desktop mode
I am on emui 9.0.0.198 and I have no problem connecting my television through hdmi without extra power. Although at first the connection failed (tv screen showing red stripes and intermittently switching to black screen) and I had to change hdmi cable. Desktop mode worked fine after that hdmi replacement. Maybe just hdmi does not draw much power.
Mate 20 pro.
I bought a usb-c to hdmi cable, it connected to my new LG PC monitor a few times with no problems. But recently (no sure when or why) it will not connect to the monitor but it will connect fine to my Samsung series 7 TV.
The phone notification says the phone is supplying power to the usb device.
I have a ugreen 16gb USB/usb c flash that I used to use on my p20 lite and it worked fine. I tried it with my mate 20 pro and it does not work. I also have a hdmi/usb c for desktop mode and that works with no issue.
I purchased USB c / female USB adapter and when I plug in my OTG USB memory (that does not work when plugged into the phone) now works perfectly.
