hey all this is most likely the wrong section so pleas move if it is, but anyway im curious about backtrack 5 on the nook color, ive seen one person got it working but im curious if it is the full gui or if there is only a command prompt version running? and how hard this would be to get running? any help would be great thanks
I would think this would work on the Nook Color as well but haven't tried it out myself.
But I think I will now...

ill try it when i get home from work forgot it today lol if you get it done let me know how it goes
Im trying it now, I had to revert from Hybrid RC1 HC on the nook to try it. Im copying the files over now. The only main issue i see is the resolution, that may be a concern, but o well im gonna give it a go
cool keep us posted, i may be dumb but i havnt seen if this is a gui or comand prompt
The image that they link to has GUI you just have to connect to it over VNC. Its the same way you can use the Ubuntu image in android.

im trying my best to attempt this on the NOOK, but im having issues with the 4gb issue and the other member has not been able to upload a smaller 3.3gb version. im attempting to see what i can do now
i would like native boot, not chroot.
chroot, we have got debian(more fit, BT image is large), ssh to debian can do almost anything.

Dude your downloading the wrong version the version I downloaded was only 1.1gb the ARM version.
Name: BT5-GNOME-ARM.7z
Size: 1060
Flavor: GNOME
Arch: arm
Image: IMG
Download: Direct
MD5: a66bf35409f4458ee7f35a77891951eb
it unzips to over 4.9gigs. you need the files that are uploaded in the x10 thread. im copying them now to attempt first shot at it
here is the thread from my main xda page posted a few days ago. it really is quite as easy as drag and drop.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079898
here is a link to my post a few minutes ago. found the distro via the xda mainpage and it seems to run ok on the NC but not natively.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13947701&postcount=128
overall its cool that it's running on the NC or most any android device - the con is that it's not native and uses vnc to localhost. it's ok to play with but really won't be of much use for any real projects. i'll try to build up on this release and use it in the field for some clients. see how far it can really go on the NC.
Im thinking about getting a Nook Colot but wanted to know if it fully runs backtrack since I need to use aircrack-ng on it. Please let me know how it worked for you guys. Thanks!
I have been trying to run Ubuntu/debian/backtrack distros on ACE. However I have been getting a segmentation fault error for a busybox chroot command in the scripts.
There is a related thread in these forums if anyone is interested, but unfortunately no solution.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079898
I am just curious to see if anyone here was successful doing it and if so how. Many users have a similar problem and I have gone through lot of general suggestions given in the above thread, but none of them solved my problem. So just trying my luck here to see if anyone else is interested to get one of those distros running on ACE.
If it can make coffee when succesfull...im interested.
Cheers
progress?
Hi Sandred
Did you find out any more in the end? I had the exact same problem with my Galaxy Ace when trying to install BT5.
If you look on rumah-android.com/install-backtrack-5-linux-on-android.html it seems to show it working on an ACE but I haven't tried using debdroid yet. I'll let you know if I do ever get it working though..

Marcus,
If you are referring to second image on the above site, it is not ACE. It is Samsung Galaxy something (if you look at left corner of the image, you see a camera/sensor on front left side of the phone) which is not Ace.
Anyways I was not successful running any distribution at all. I have even tried laika linux. The problem is with busybox which itself is segment faulting. Updating to latest greatest version did not help either. I changed different kernels on our phone and it did nothing. I have tried entering all the commands one by one , everything is ok until chroot command, where it just breaks.
I do not think debdroid app will help either, though I have not yet tried it.
I have not yet given up yet, I will keep trying when ever I get time and keep this thread posted. Thanks for asking.

Thanks a lot phoenix2241987, I got Ubuntu working following the above link!
Except I had to change the script a little bit to make it work on mine. I am attaching the script I modified if in case somebody needs it.
(Actually only this image works, other images of backtrack and laika do not work following the same method/script)
I was able to do a tightVNC session from PC and open up a full screen desktop. Firefox is not bad either, it is fast enough to browse text based sites.
Thanks a lot!

Pretty smooth, I should say.. There is a very slight lag, but that shouldn't be a problem. Btw, I'm using the supercharger script. I guess it runs smooth because of that.
And just after running the shell script, when you get the "[email protected]:" prompt, type " vncserver -geometry 480x320" . And in android vnc viewer use port 5902. This will make sure that the resolution fits your screen.
Also use input method as "Touchpad", in vnc viewer settings.
And once you have opened the GUI using vnc viewer, you can close the terminal emulator to free up ram. I found that the GUI runs smoother if you do that. You can use the vnc viewer to bring up the GUI anytime you want, until the next reboot, since ubuntu runs in the background even after you exit from the terminal emulator.
The downside is that you cannot mount your sdcard in your pc, once you have booted up ubuntu. You will have to reboot to get it connected. I guess this is because the ubuntu image is mounted on one of the loop devices manually.

I see you have modified the loop device #. I had to do that too, since all my loop devices [dm-0 to dm-7] were already mounted upon by some other applications installed on my phone. I had to uninstall one of them, to free up the loop device [in my case, dm-7], and change the script accordingly.
It would be cool if we could get some other OS running too.. Windows, for instance . But i guess that wouldn't be possible, due to the linux architecture of android. But who knows, some day, someone might change the bootloader, and get it to boot as the native OS, instead of running it as a virtual machine.

That is a pain, it would actually be "better" if we would chose to boot up as ubunto at the startup, that would be awesome.

After running the shell script, when you get the "[email protected]:" prompt, type " vncserver -geometry 480x320". I used 480x320 because its the resolution of our galaxy ace, and it fits the screen nicely. You can use any other resolution you want, just put them in place of "480x320". And in android vnc viewer use port 5902.
Regarding the color depth, I use 24 bit, and it runs smoothly. If you have lag, use lower settings, although it will reduce the quality of display. You can change the color settings on the connect screen of the vnc viewer. There is a list-box named "color format".

I was so eager that i exited terminal before that text showed up, but for some reason ubuntu still starts up as a bigger resolution after typing those commands. Oh and 5902 doesnt work, only 5901.
OH, nvm! It works now, gonna reboot and start over again then check if it laggs!
For some reason i can only chose "No Pan, Trackball Mouse" Since we have no trackball im unable to move the cursor. Any solution to that?
edit: stupid me, had it on fit screen so..... works now thanks for all the help!
First, I would like my first post to include a THANK YOU to all of developers. Without you guys, my phone would be as boring as sober missionary with the lights off. So once again, thank you guys.
Now onto my problem...
I have tried about 6 or 7 of the ROMs listed here in the development forums. I enjoy each one for different reasons. Today I tried [ROM][CM9HYBRID] PARANOIDANDROID UNOFFICIAL June 25th *Hammer time!! and fell in love. This is the ROM that I would love to use as a daily driver. However, I have a major problem that I don't know how to fix.
Whenever I try to play music from any music player, I get a "cannot play file type" message. The file type is mp3. I have been running, like I said earlier, 6 or 7 ROMs throughout the week and have noticed that if it isn't based off of TW, I have the same problem with the other ROMs.
I'm really a noob when it comes to things like this so I followed the noob rules and looked for an hour for an answer to my question before eventually creating this topic. I'm sure the answer is simple to some, but I'm totally lost as to what to do to get mp3 playback functionality with this ROM. Is it a codec to download? I just don't know. Thanks in advance.
And the problem was transferring the files over to my phone using airdroid. I don't know why this caused a problem but once I connected a cable and moved them over, it works. Thought I would post my solution just in case someone runs into the same issue.

Other reasons files don't play is where you purchased them from. iTunes-bought files have DRM protection so they only play on iTunes authorized machines.
Hey all, I've been around for a while and suppose I finally got off my butt and decided to try my hand at building stuff. I just wanted to let you know I posted this in the Ubuntu Touch Dev forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41307690
All credits go to the efforts of all the devs who have gotten us this far, I know there would be no hope for me without them
Not really usable, but it boots! :highfive:
I'd like to keep the dev questions in that thread if we can. General discussion can be here.
Updated dev post...

Posted a 2nd build and added stuff to the post, sorry about the name change, more for me than anything else. Apps stay open, videos stopped working >.< I haven't checked the logs for anything yet, will do when I get a chance...
Figured I'd put up some new pics... I found out apparently if you swipe right on the status icons you get a Device pull down vs the individual ones... <-- DIdn't know that until a little bit ago Pics show that, multitasking (gallery on left, calc on right) and Home screen with the side bar...
I was just wondering today wether anyone had tried this yet thanks for the effort it's appreciated.

Any way to run this off an SD card?
I haven't even looked into it yet... I need to look into the Ubuntu side of the code to see what it isn't pulling in like it should be so this thing can function better. I found a script in another forum for auto changing the display stuff, added an Acclaim piece to it and it works, will upload it when I get off work today.

question about ubuntu touch for nook
hi, i am new to this forum....
i was checking to see if there was an ubuntu touch image for the nook, and i ran across this post.
what i was wondering is if there is a way to install the image to boot off the SD card simular to
the N2A (nook 2 android) image does? i was thinking this way i could test it with out
bricking my nook tablet...
any ideas?
its awesome that someone is taking this on, as it looks like the nook is about to
become history.
thanks
Hey all, sorry I haven't posted much, just wanted to work on this a bit more before posting. I managed to get wifi to work with some terminal junk through adb and ubuntu_chroot. Basically it's not loading a module (wl12xx_sdio.ko) it should be. The network gui still doesn't show anything as of yet. So yes, I will still need to look into it more and check the source files as well. I am uploading a new build and will have instructions for it soon in the dev thread. Wondering if I should move it to the dev forum here
Not sure why, but atm apps have started force closing again. I need to reboot and see if it's somehow related. Seems something else just malfunctioned
UPDATE: Apparently getting the Network Manager GUI to work correctly is pretty simple http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41838135#post41838135
I have updated that post and I suppose I will upload my the build reference. One thing to note, the afterflash file correct the dpi seems to make my screen blank out with the latest Ubuntu builds. Not sure why just yet but it should be simple enough to add a conf file manually until I make some scripts. I have not tried adding security to the network (added wpa2-psk and worked like a charm after restarting the network-manager!) nor messed with hidden ssid's yet.
UPDATE: see Build 5 notes, I hadn't fully updated my ubuntu sources apparently Display seems to work now with newest builds!
Just when I start to get somewhere, they up and change versions on me (saucy now) Testing to see if it works!
UPDATE: Saucy boots!
-Swipe right side of screen to the left to unlock
-Network list shows then apparently goes blank after trying to get on (which I did the second time after a reboot, list stayed second time).
Note that there are two different versions of Saucy out, make sure you currently download from the same links as before (with the word "preview" in the url).
At some point I hope to figure out the missing battery indicator.
hey dejello whats the current news? are you still working on it?
btw saucy does seem to boot, raring seems to be okay

i have a rca cambio w116 v2 11.6 inch windows 10 2 in 1 tablet.
specs are as follows:
intel atom z3735f
32gb with 64gb sd
i cant get the touchscreen working in android x86 (ive tried android-x86 5.1-rc1 EFI image (64-bit OS) and remix os)
about to try 6.0
it works perfectly in windows, but when i boot into android, the touchscreen doesnt work at all.
the windows devices are:
HID-compliant touchscreen
kmdf hid minidriver for touch i2c device
the driver seems to be by silead
So..android boots fine, and is usable with the keyboard and mouse.
once again, any kind of direction on this would be great. ive read about similar issues, but no resolutions.
thanks

Ive found the android drivers for my touch screen.
Mssl1680
Im just not sure what to do with them. There are three files with single letter extensions.
If anyone can succesfully help me with this, id happily pay.
$10-20 to whoever can help.
Also no luck getting Android to work with touchsreen
Bradgunn84 - I also have not had luck getting the touchscreen to work. I only had success getting android 4.4 kitkat to boot to the GUI. Android 5 & 6 hand at the Android banner. Did you have success getting either to boot correctly. I'll kick an additional $20 if anyone can help with getting it to work.
Rca cambio
I booted remix os, 4.4, and 5.xx, with rufus. All booted fine.
But no touchscreen on any. The mouse and keyboard work fine, if the keyboard is connected when you boot. If its disconnected, its really laggy when you reconnect it.
I have the driver files themselves for the touchscreen, and im slowly learning how to add them to, or compile a new kernal for x86.
But for now, its just a lot of reading. Still pretty lost.

ok, so i booted to the most recent version of 4.4 x86. it boots up fine, and is completely usable with mouse and keyboard.
after messing with the calibration app i found out the touch screen IS working, just not accurately at all.
It will register touches, just in the wrong place. i dont know how to calibrate it. none of the calibration apps on the play store work either.
Paulgall - As a live OS mine boots up and runs perfect(except touch screen of course). But it will register touches. just need to figure out how to calibrate it.

Thanks Bradgunn84 - I'll continue to work with 4.4. and see if I can do anything with the touchscreen. 5 and 6 never get to the GUI, they just get hungup in the loading process. Did you have to change any BIOS settings? Are you running a SD card?
I had the same hopes for a dual boot. I had a RCA Viking and loved it, but didn't like that 5.0 didn't support apps on the SD card. They have it so locked down that it had no hopes of upgrading to 6.

Now the latest 4.4 won't boot. Maybe I messed up my Rufus settings. What settings do you use when creating the USB stick? Thanks It's probably obvious I'm a newbie to this whole thing.
Rufus settings
I used 4.4 r5 with rufus. I set it to .iso first, find the 4.4 file, then change the settings to dd mode. Hit start and it works fine. Im using a generic 4gb i had no use for. I didnt have to change anything in the bios. And i have a 64gb sd card(class 10) inserted.
I havent had any issues with any version booting up. They all work (for me).
Im going to work on it more today. Ill post any results.

Okay, thanks. Not sure what I did, but working now.
Touch screen orientation
After working with it some more, I think the touch screen is 90 degrees out of phase from the display. When the display is display in landscape, the touch screen seems to be limited to a narrow width and long height (portrait dimensions). Touchpad also has the same issue, up/down movement moves cursor left/right, and left/right moves cursor up/down. Are you experiencing this on your tablet?
No, my touchpad and keyboard work perfectly. Touchscreen is still way off. Ive tried two calibration apps, neither helped. I attemped to add product id to init.sh with no success. And attempted ts_calibrate from terminal, also no luck.

6.0 x86 wouldnt recognize touchscreen at all. Im about to sell this thing, lol. Not sure what to do.

Hmm, I suspect there are different versions of this tablet out there. The touchpad x-y is also backwards when I'm in the BIOS screens. Not happy.
Wondering if anyone knew how to solve this issue?
Any more work going on with this project. I'd love to get the cambio with the extra gig of memory and the win 10 lic for just $10 more than the similar android viking model. Then dual boot. What a deal that would be. If anyone got it working.
It looks like the current viking is coming with android 6. Is that build available to see if it will load up on the cambio.
OK I know this isnt on-topic with ANDROID developement, but i have NO drivers for my Cambio W116v2. Can anyone back up their windows 10 drivers with powershell? I know how to do it, i did it before, but somehow lost the zip i created in the shuffle o.o If you need the steps i will gladly sent them. mainly sound and touch is needed but since you will do a backup, might as well do the whole process so others can benifit. RCA had NO drivers uploaded to their support site o.o Thanks in advance...
Bios
How do you enter the bios settings on the cambio 2in1? I just got one and would like to change the os but need settings options.
Thanks
