Yes, there is difference. Your warranty is usualy lost (depends on the country). You can't use some sony feauters, apps (track id, lounge, what's new etc...), no OTA updates for you. Lower quality on camera (stock, more noise in low light pictures). And who know's what more.

There is difference in quality on Lolipop (only on stock camera, in low light photos. More digital noise). On marshmallow i didn't notice any difference.

It'll be exactly the same on kk, lollipop or mm, loss of drm/ta keys impacts Camera performance especially in low light conditions even on m4 aqua, no updates work ota or via Sony pcc only manually via flashtool, some Sony apps stop working that rely on drm/ta keys, and bravia engine, x-reality and supervivid all stop working. Also kiss your warranty good bye. At least you can back them up first if you remember, we currently have no choice if we want root on the x range drm/ta keys get wiped upon unlocking with option to back up.

There's a drm fix/workaround that supposably works for most xperia devices but I'm yet to see any actual before the fix(no keys) and after the fix(drm workaround) images but nothing will be as good as having the proper drm keys and once they are gone they are gone for good. That's why I'm waiting for a while before I unlock mine I like my Xperia camera working as Sony intended.

Kitkat now keeps X-Reality working even with unlocked bootloaders plus other thoughts

Hello!
Just for anyone wondering, I was surprised that my X-Reality still works now with Kitkat even though my bootloader is unlocked. It is still a hit or miss depending on your file but at least you have the option.
So far the pluses are:
#1 Working X-Reality with unlocked bootloader.
#2 No more annoying Audio Enhancement bug (where it will stop working for other apps other than Walkman)
#3 USB DACs work even better now with no USB warnings to disable it etc.
#4 Peace of mind having the latest version
Cons:
The main on seems to be that I lost performance on all Benchmarks. I haven't tested games yet so either we lost performance or there is no "cheating" going on now. I will have to test.
So far that is all I have noticed. I didnt see an ART option either..maybe I am missing it.
Feel free to comment on your experiences.
I think the xreality is a hangover from the issues that Sony had with the z1 and unlocked BL
4.4 has always underperformed in benchmarks, mostly in 3D graphics from my limited testing, but has got a lot better and is getting close to 4.3 now

Any news about it ?
I'm on Paranoid Android and the image is not so contrasted...
Custom ROM will not be able to use xreality / bravia2
My xreality broked when i unlocked bootloader

[Q] No AOSP based development for Z2 ?

How come there isn't even basic ROMs for Z2 yet? No PA, No VanirAOSP and all.
I am thinking to buy this device but the dev support got me worried.
From my experience on here dev support usually takes a while on sony devices. If custom roms is your thing you should have a look at htc's phones or wait and see what progress is made with the z2.

Official CM development has already begun, (on par with the Z) which is much sooner than happened with the Z1.
Z1 had issues with unlocking the bootloader which was only resolved a few months after launch. Z2 does not have this problem.
Once CM completes the bring up other roms will follow.

I must admit, I'd like to see a completely pure AOSP ROM myself. (With one possible exception: the camera. I wouldn't want to lose any hardware features in terms of capture resolution, capture rate, full / half press shutter button, focus speed, or image quality. Couldn't care less about 4K video, but I don't know if there's a third-party app that can provide all of the above.)
I find my Xperia Z2 incredibly bloated, and while I've disabled as much as I can, there's a lot that can't be disabled without root. (And I am uncertain whether I can safely root this and change much without losing my warranty or the ability to install subsequent OTA updates without risking bricking the phone.)

Well it's a more popular phone. Not sure about somewhere else, but in Adelaide (Australia), htc is everywhere, but you can barely bump into someone with a Sony phone.
I for one would love a purer android experience, but I don't want to lose the active noise cancelling and answering machine. The thing irritates me the most on Z2 is that 'what's new' button when you long press home. Google now is not in the middle as it should.
Sure ROMs will have support when the phone is widely available, the trees are quite stable now and ready for daily driver.

I think I'll just get Z1 because it's almost similar to Z2 and has more support.
In case anyone is intrested: I currently work on a pure AOSP device tree for 4.4.4. i also planned to have some fun with L-preview but I don't know if I am able to do this.
You'll hear from me.
Greetings

That's the holy grail of android. AOSP with some pumped up feature rich camera. It doesn't exist, on any device!
I ran CM11 today just to try it out. I really like the ROM but the camera is just garbage compared to Sony's software. Plus you can't start the camera from the shutter button (a huge benefit for me personally). The smoothness and customization is great, but the camera never will be.

The camera is on par with Sony's ROM when it comes to photo quality, it doesn't support 4k but apart from that it
s pretty okay?

Press the button on the 2nd step (the one which is more inside) for like 2 seconds. Starts fine here on Carbon (which uses CM Camera).

Screen is much better on Z2.
Plus, aosp been avail on z1 much longer and to get camera to work properly you have to install a camera fix app.
Z2 has only had fully working aosp for a few weeks. You will find new developers and ROMs appearing each month so don't worry.
And on my previous phones, I rarely run pure CM but on Z2 I'm totally happy with it. Fast, smooth and with an Android L theme it looks great too.

For just a point and shoot it may be on part with OEM. One of Sony's best features might be the 120fps 720p mode. Much better than iphone5s or OPPO find7. No such option with AOSP derived third party roms.

if you install the oneplusone camera app, it will start when the phone is unlocked with the camera button. and you get a little bit of customisation.
From the looks of things though android L will bring use closer to the gold of having support for advanced camera features, rather than oems having to build there own.

Yeah I switched to Carbon for a few days and found that the general photo quality in the stock camera was pretty close, but I still missed the Sony app enough that I loaded my RomAur backup.
Honestly I could have dealt with the camera, but I had a lot of issues with AndroidWear and my Gear Live not working correctly on it... Not sure how support is on other Z2 supporting AOSP-ish ROMs at the moment but it wasn't particularly reliable there.
I definitely did like the overall experience though minus the minor issues.

I'm not asking for a pumped-up, feature-rich camera, just one that can do what the hardware is capable of. Full resolution, full burst rate, and a working shutter button. I'd prefer not to have all Sony's extra bunk like ar modes etc, to be honest.

What does unlocked bootloader break in Xperia z2?

Does unlocking bootloader breaks bionz?
And what else and what not?
X-Reality, Super Vivid, Playstation app, Playstaion remote play
that all ive found to break
Okayy..... And what about the camera app? Do u see more noise in low light? Bionz?

honnetsly i cant tell a difference
its always been as noisy as it is now for the past year since ive got the device

Good news! :D

Apparently the guys from "DXOMARK" have gotten their hands on the Xperia z3+ and put it through their tests. To my surprise Sony seems to have finetuned their great sensor to the extent that an xperia device occupies the third place in "DXOMARK" top: http://www.dxomark.com/Mobiles/Sony-Xperia-Z3-Plus-review-Improved-rankings-for-latest-iteration
What are your thoughts on this?Is there any way to port Z3+'s camera wizardry to our beloved Z2? )
You can port the camera app but 70% of the features wont work and camera quality wont be changed.

Well the hardware doesnt change and nor does the camera driver in the kernel
Maybe some changes will happen due to FW/SW libs but at best we wont see much change nor improvement for quality
As for features working, Z2 doesnt have manual camera control unlike Z3+.
Camera from Z3+ is not better than one in Z2.Z2 can expand much for quailty in manual mode so finally results would be almoust the same like Z3+.

I've been searching the net if it is possible to take long exposure photos on smartphones. I found some but can we do it with our Z2?

It would be perfectly possible, if Sony would be so nice and would include Camera2 API access into their Lollipop/Marshmallow ROM. But they didn't.
There is a solution - Long exposure camera app, it will somehow achieve the effect (my guess is more photos, combined together). It works rather well for light traces, etc., but the result's aren't greatest. + quite low res results.

If couple of seconds works for you then Try using:
camera fv5
as i tried i think effective is max 5 seconds, maybe somebody else hase solved this
Long exposure pbotos you cant and you could take with Z2 cause Sony does not make Camera 2API for Z2.
You can try, like someone said try with FV-5 do few exposures instead of that.

The dev is probably using hacks to even get that.
If you get a Sony, just know you're going to have to use the stock camera. For me that's a total deal breaker.
Even their unreleased X series will be without camera2.
