Feedback from A2017U Nougat preview - ZTE Axon 7 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hola
Many of us I know signed up, most of us did not get in due to limited space. Bottom line there must be a few out there that got it. I am not sure of the so called NDA that was required, but I am hoping some can provide some very high level feedback.
1. Generally stable? Enough at least for usage as your daily driver?
2. How close to stock Android is it? For example, same battery management interface? Onscreen buttons? Minute vibration controls? Camera improvements?
3. Root available? I saw from some pictures issued on the ZTE Chinese forum showing a warning about having rooted device on a Nougat preview.
4. Any noticeable improvements in cellular reception? Actual dBm values would be nice.
It is just to give us a indication that ZTE US is at least not only bringing Nougat to our phones BUT the skinning and functionality and stability is ok.

I'm surprised the firmware itself has not leaked already.

Hello, I have Nougat and can provide some feedback from it.

I'd love to hear as well

Watch out, people are already complaining on Z Community about what had been said.

According to one of the testers it is still MiFavor. Wow, can't believe I was fooled into thinking they actually cared with their "stock android discussion". Guess I have to flash CM and live with its bugs.

Where are they complaining? It's not me right?

I can't even be sure it isn't me. Check out the help and assistance thread.

The 7.0 ROM has been in works for months. They released an early preview (screenshots) to the Chinese forum months ago -- of course it was still going to be MiFavor. The discussion poll about stock android for R&D was literally only like 2 weeks ago. If people think ANY company can just turn on a dime like that, then they clearly don't understand how companies work or how software is developed at that level.

I was one of the people complaining and I don't regret it. They're going to cancel this if you all don't shut your mouths unless ruining this for everyone is your thing. In which case, keep it up.

Moderator please close this thread as well.

This is not your thread... Not that anything is really going on in here anyway.

+1 on closing this thread.
Don't complain ZTE doesn't listen to us or play by the rules, when they are reaching and the first thing you do is break trust.
Earn it first, then complain after that.

+1 closing this thread

Why close this thread? This has no real bearing on the ZTE beta. If someone on the test panel screws up, that's on them. It's totally legit to be curious about the new OS. IMO anyway.

Thread closed. Sorry guys, but if the testers signed an NDA, then there is no point to thus thread. NDAs are legally binding contracts and a breach may invite legal action avainst involved parties... For everyone's sake, lets close this and respect the NDA..

Cm7 valpha3

Just wanted to let everybody know that I've tried the VALPHA3 of CM7 with Tiamat's 1.1.0 AOSP kernel and (aside from the known bugs) I've NEVER seen an Android phone run this great. 1 hour of medium-heavy use off the charger, OC'd to 1.6 GHz using SetCPU and the lagfree governor and auto-brightness on connected to WiFi, I'm only down 4% on the stock battery. No issues connecting to a WPA2 WiFi network and this thing is FAST! Benchmarks barely show how sweet this thing is running.

Sent from my double barrel Shooter. BANG!
By the way, it seems like the benchmark scores are fairly low because I'm using a "less-than-ideal" 16GB Kingston class 10 card that only achieves class 4 write speeds. Also, anybody who knows anything about Android knows that benchmarks only show half of the story. Not even sure why I included the screenshot now. Had to be the excitement.
I haven't seen any issues with multi-touch.
Also [insert question about demoralizing comment here]...
Why's that? I mean, benchmarks are pretty useless anyways. Testing in real world applications is what matters. And CM7 is much more responsive than Sense apps in that respect.

I already said this..if you guys are expecting any kind of a stable ICS rom before the year's end then you're just setting yourself up to be disappointed. The source isn't gonna be released until middle of November. Then you have a month in half to code a working rom from 100% scratch?
Not to mention 2 major holidays to deal with in that time...no.
The CM7 alpha thread got closed because it was filled with morons going off topic or *****ing each other out. We may not even have nightlies for CM7 before the year's end... development on this particular phone is slow and boring. It is what it is tho..we'll get it eventually.
No 100% working ics until April or May. Im calling it.
Temari x Shikamaru
As an aside: Gingerbread was released in December (SDK was Dec 6th, I couldn't find an actual source date, but I didn't look to hard).
And we had "kang" builds working for the Evo4g by Christmas. I couldn't find when official nightlies began (it looks like mid-January) and the first RC release was in mid-February.
Hopefully this will give people a little perspective into dev times. Granted this is not a timeline that is set in stone. As of right now the 3D doesn't even have CM7 nightlies so it might (read: probably will) take longer.
Just have patience.

I thought that was why, but that is a awful reason. I remember the thread was locked or cleaned up at one point, but come on. Toast is a great dev and all, but I don't support that decision. The one thing I always complain about (and my peers) in work environments, is lack of communication. Im a dev too and I understand that asking for ETA isn't nice. I'm not asking for that at all. Just give me a status update like I dunno, once a month would be nice. I hope the CM team doesn't look at us like a typical dev/client relationship in the work force, where that relationship is non existent.
And yea I know they do it for free, they have real lives, stop complaining, etc. I'm not complaining....I'm asking for better/more frequent communication.
And its my OPINION. If you disagree, do so politely.

This. And even then people should expect to wait MONTHS for things like 4g support or to do without 3D features. At least thats what I remember with the OG Evo.
Also agree with issafram, its a shame the thread was closed instead of cleaned up and forced to stay on topic. I have only followed a handful of ROM threads so I can't speak for how widespread it is, but it seems the EV0 3D forums has been plagued with these problems compared to the EVO 4G forums. I can pontificate the reasons all day but I think the solution is to crack the whip until the offenders learn or leave.

Alpha3 was released Sept 25th. It is barely over 1 month since then and there have been a couple "status updates" since then.
This is not directed towards you, just in general: Why do people feel like devs owe them something?

The devs don't owe us anything and I know that 100%. Its just hard for a development forum to stay development related when there is basically no public development being made. I love teamwin and toastcfh and can't wait for another release but by the way things seem we wont see anything until nightlies which are probably another 2-3 weeks out. Once trwp 2.0 is released cm7 development should speed up I think. Just no telling when either will be released.

Sorry, rank78, but Issafram has it exactly right, here.
If you're going to open a thread, be it in the Dev Forum, in General, in Q&A, or in Themes, there needs to be one thing included in every one, and that's just:
"Common Courtesy".
It shouldn't matter at all how talented the Developer is, or how highly anticipated the ROM is:
If you're going to take the time to open a thread in the first place, the ONE responsibility you should take on is the responsibility of keeping a simple line of communication open to the users who decide to devote their time and interest to that thread.
Sure, you're more than welcome to state right up front "Don't ask for ETAs" and "Keep the thread on-topic!", but the OP has a responsibility then as well:
That's just to take a SMALL bit of time, (even if it's only once a WEEK) to let the users/subscribers know that at least you are 'still working on things', or 'at a roadblock' or 'on hold for now' or even that you're still alive, even.
Apparently, in the CM7 thread, that was too much for even TOAST or Shift to handle, and to insinuate that the closing of the thread was the fault of users going off-topic, (after not a single post in three weeks) , is absolutely asinine.
What kind of topic are users supposed to "stay on" when, by all accounts and measures, the developer has 'jumped ship' on the entire project?
Of course the users in that thread got sidetracked and began making off-topic posts.
Would you expect anything else?
Nope, the CM7 thread WASN'T closed due to the off-TOPIC habits of the users...
Rather, though:
The CM7 thread WAS closed due to the off-THREAD habits of the Developer and the "Maintainer".
Simple as that.
(Not just my two cents, because that's the absolute truth.)

Why couldn't they release Alphas? I'd be fine with spotty wi-fi and no video.
And now everything is apparently done including video yet still no release? GUYS, stop being such perfectionists, release alphas/betas. WHATEVER. Just get something out so we won't have to use a phone OS on our tablets anymore. PLEASE.

Oh please, the ROM has been ready for weeks now.
I'm sure all of us here have flashed ROMs on our phones/tablets that were spotty and were perfectly fine with them because we knew they were just Alphas/Betas and even in that state they were far better than what we had before.
Patience, young padawan. Good things come to those who wait.
Lets see here we get to install Android on our devices for free and the ROMs are all developed by volunteers. Be grateful that we have a stable Gingerbread port, we will get ICS when its ready. If you want to speed things up get involved with the port or donate towards it.
Can't believe I am even going to enter this thread and reply - but I'd rather wait till they are happy with it and how it will perform than to get some half-cocked ROM released just to shut people up.
If they released it as it is now... people would just start complaining about what they already know doesn't work... EXAMPLE: how many times do people bring up WIFI and sound distortion in regards to the current ROMs?! Everyone knows it's a problem, yet the posts/threads just keep coming.
Let them polish it and enjoy what you have now. It WILL come, but you will appreciate it a lot I promise you when it's released if they take the time to internally test it and feel confident they have done all they can before the first release is placed in user's hands. Another thread about this really isn't going to change anything.
Personally I'd rather the mods just remove these threads that pop up or consolidate them somewhere - so people can easily find the threads that will help them to solve their problems.
Not trying to bait you - I promise - and you are entitled to your opinion, but relax man - it's all going to be ok - I promise! :-D
I too am anxious to get ICS on my touchpad and I do agree that I would have liked to see a beta or an alpha to test it out, but I don't think this is the way to go about asking for it...although I dont know that there is a good way to ask for it, in any case I get where your coming from
Well there is the PreludeDrew Evervolv ICS ROM that just released, you can try that out if your that impatient...
For me, I've tweaked CM7 so much that it doesn't look or feel the same anymore. So basicly i've 'tweaked' it to my taste, and i'm lovin it!
I think the reason why they won't release an alpha or beta, is that people are still trying or getting into CM7. And for a person who is comfortable with CM7, why upgrade to a more buggier OS and nothing works?
EndlessMike, no one owes you a thing. You didn't buy your touchpad from them, aren't paying them to develop or use roms, they didn't promise you a release and didn't imply that you'll get anything...ever.
If you want ICS, buy a Xoom. Better yet, take the time out to learn how to code and develop roms and do it yourself instead of wasting your life away hoping someone will spoon-feed you. Stop complaining.

If you think this wait for a free product is bad, try waiting for Samsung, HTC, Motorola etc to release their ICS update for products people PAID for. The lucky ones are going to have to wait months. The unlucky ones don't even get an update at all.
Considering that that the Touchpad was never even meant to be an Android device in the first place and when most of us bought it, Android for the Touchpad didn't even exist, I'm quite happy with what we currently have and what we will be getting whenever we get it. It's far more than I ever expected and I very much am thankful to the developers for it.

I can't imagine anything more tedious for a Developer than a perfect ROM, especially when the community requests a taste and later demands perfection.
dis thread is ignant, yo.
You guys are late. I stopped checking for it 2 months ago. It'll come out when it comes out.
It saddens and sickens me to see such threads being made. The ungratefulness being shown to the developers is just sickening; and for some reason, it is worse on this forum than on others.
Rather than be excited and respectful, this entire community is degenerating into a group of whiny, self absorbed group who think that the devs live to serv them, and should bow to their whim.

TheCubed developer whom created Bump along with TeamCodeFire has quit developing for our phone. Future updates more then likely won't work unless others pick up where they left off. Now that Bump is open sourced and out there LG will be able to lock it back down if you recieve OTA. I am sure development will not just stop. Lots of good people doing damn good work. jholtom for one who got us CM11 and 12.

I retract my old statement. I wasn't really thinking because Engine has been developing for us since day 1 and I am using his D3 rom for ZV4 right now for the longest I have kept a rom before flashing another. I'll stick around as long as we have at least one developer trying.
Correct me if I'm wrong, and I'm all for open sourced things, but I feel this whole Bump thing will blow up in our faces.
Yes, another group took theCubes work (and his team), stating they were being "Shady" about it, and opened it for all. Usually, this is good news, but you have to ask yourself a couple of things. One, why wasn't it open sourced to begin with? Is it because CodeFire/theCubed was making money? No. They were clearly keeping the process in the dark, but if it wasn't for financial gain, then why? The ONLY logical answer has to be because they knew more about the situation w/ LG than any one else.
I've got to believe, that when someone takes a couple of months to accomplish something no one else could, then holds on to it for whatever reason, I've got to believe it's for the good of the community. With signatures and keys, and with the CM11 & CM12 being closed, I firmly believe we are all screwed now without Codefire and theCubed. This process has taken forever to get, and in a matter of days, another team ruined it, and the future, so what? They could have OFFICIAL CM ROMs? Ridiculous.
I guess my point is, I've been a member for 8+ years on this forum, and I have NEVER seen this much drama, name calling, *****ing, moaning, accusations and ETAs. I don't know if it's new members, old members getting old and cranky, or just society loosing all respect and patience; but this crap needs to stop! I've been on other phone threads, and the LG G3 issues are BY FAR the worst. If you don't have anything nice to say, if you don't have any thing to add, shut it. Show a little respect to devs, take your fragile ego out of it, and lets move forward together. Who cares if something is SHADY, so long as it gets the job done?!? That's why everyone was initially *****ing anyways, because nothing was happening. Now that things are picking up, people NEED to know how it works? Pathetic.
Stepping off the soap box. Clean up this post if needed, but the community needs to clean itself up. Take the initiative, stop stupidity.

We all need to band together and get things working for our phone. I'm down to help as much as possible . I'm grateful for what these guys done so far but there could always be more that the end user could do to help. I been trying everything to get bluetooth working but i won't stop trying. So hopefully there's more people out there working on fixes for the cm rom because it felt nice and smooth on the lg g3. It's a shame bt don't work because i use it alot.
I think we screwed the ROM development over... don't see it happening without proper Bump!. Would love to be wrong... but if that's not the case, and development will continue, why was CM threads closed? Why has nothing been addressed or advanced? I think the development for this phone has been severely handicapped.
Lol ... Um just FYI even though the threads closed there's a new build up .. Nothing stopped

Is There a Possibility of Longevity for the HAM2?

I just got done reading the 1+1 vs HAM2 and it confirmed that the screen size and resolution and specs is solid deal with this phone. I am coming from a SGH-i727.
But I am still worried about the longevity of the HAM2 and it's community. I fear we won't get any roms or only a few will come and that will be it and then it will die off. Am I wrong for believing this? It's been almost a year since this device was release and Huawei hasn't release anything and we only have one really good developer working on Kitkat, good bless you. But other than that, that's it.
Carrier wise, I don't see much for Byo Wireless and this device, but I assume it will work because they are based on verizon's network and that's supported with them. I am currently on At&t but I will probably be leaving for the above mentioned carrier. Has anyone used them before with this phone?
The large screen, unlocked phone, and a great community with lots of roms is a big deal to me. Is the HAM2 the right choice for me? Thanks for all future replies.
I own both 1+1 64 GB and HAM MT2L03. Both the devices are fabulous in their class and honestly I will not be able to pick one over the other.
For battery life, HAM beats OPO hands down. So if that is important, go for it.
On all other areas they are close contenders. I have the same apps loaded on both and they run as well as each other. Of course. Opo has more ram and a faster CPU.
The stock email app on HAM is very basic. OPO has the kitkat version which supports swipe to delete etc. and I prefer that version.
Other than the stock email app downside, HAM has upsides in terms of great power mgmt app built in and phone cache cleaner etc. that are so best in class.
I find these more important than the Android version on HAM. So while it would be nice to get lollipop sometime, the phone is very much functional without it. Go ahead and get one!

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my thread. I am just worried we won't get any custom roms at all, but dang, HAM2 seems so amazing. The screen size alone is one of the best features of this extremely mid-range phone. The battery life is really nice as well. This means a lot coming from someone that owns GS2, which eats up batteries for snacks.
Where would you recommend getting one? I think, Amazon is the best best. I haven't read great things about WalMarts' or Targets' cheaper version.

We've got a few developers working on bringing KK and L to our phone. Huawei has said we will get a Huawei version of Lollipop, though that is still yet to come. If it ever will. We also have another developer who brought TWRP to our phone, and our phone is even officially supported by them.
It's not much, but it's still much better than where we were a few months ago. It can only get better. :good:

I talked to one of Huawei's customer care workers yesterday about the release date for Lollipop update. As usual he didn't commit himself. He said first half of 2015! At least they haven't reneged on their promise.

Well we're already almost halfway through the "first half of 2015". Hopefully we get some news soon.

I have already bought the phone and a case, because of everyone's great advice. I may get another cxase though. But I have no faith in Huawei's support team getting us our updates. We were suppose to get KK and that never came even though they made the promise when the phone was release. Our awesome devs will come through though! Do you have their G+ or other social media outlets?
We should pool together to support their time and effort. We could do this by a new thread and gathering important information and support for them and linking to their paypale. I believe this within the forum's rules as individuals can leave a donate link at the end of their postings. It will help out the whole Ham2 community. What is everyone's thoughts on this idea?

This is the developer's G+ page [https://plus.google.com/app/basic/+TomMarshall/]. He has explicitly stated that his work is courtesy of cyanogen, so he doesn't take donations.

I wanted to donate Google Play credit or something like that but it turns out they don't do that.
He deserves it though! Throw us amazon wish page or something similar. Haha! Without this development, our devices might be, and probably will be left behind!
Well to be frank I would have a lot of fun developing for this phone but I haven't found a hack successful at unlocking the bootloader for this device and support from Huawei has been an epic fail so my wife and daughter uses it more than I do :-/
Well bear in mind that it's still the Spring Festival over in China now. I wouldn't expect much until that's over. Try getting the boot unlock code after that and you might have better luck!

So, clearly, Huawei is delaying until the 11th hour

Huawei informed us last year that they'll be releasing Lollipop in the second quarter of 2015. 5 months and 3 days have already passed and if wasn't for a glimpse they provided some months ago, I would have found it difficult that our HAM2 will ever be updated.
I received my 1+1 about a month ago and tried Lollipop on it. I am not particularly impressed by Lollipop. I had to reinstall kitkat. Lollipop is over-simplified and has lots of white.
Clearly, Huawei is slow at deploying Lollipop. That is true. It sounds like you really don't care though. You seem to prefer KitKat. Not sure why you started this thread.

Huawei had promised to release Kitkat. They retracted. Then they promised Lollipop. Even though I'm not a Lollipop fan, it provides the option of having the latest android OS on your phone. So, there's no harm in that.

I got ya. I agree. I am still hopeful they release Lollipop soon. They aren't the best at this kind of stuff though. Their track record is fairly poor related to supporting existing devices. I think they are trying to be better, though. Time will tell.
Android L is meant to be released on the Asian Mate 2's on July 2nd. I think it is unlikely that it will be released for the US version before this, but if it doesn't come out for you guys on the 2nd July, I would contact Huawei and moan like Hell. Unfortunately I have seen NOTHING about a release date for the MT2-L03.
I asked them on Instagram and got the usual "Thank you, we don't know anything, we'll tell you something when nothing does everything." kind of comment.

The Asian HAM2 is a completely different phone internally, there is no reason to believe the development paths or release schedules would be in any way similar for both devices.
After over half a year of vague promises (and a worthless 'beta program' website) from Huawei USA I wouldn't expect an upgrade to Lollipop for the MT2-L03 - I honestly think they were just stringing everyone along and trying to quieten the uproar among HAM2 users that was happening at the time. I'm hoping I'm wrong, but I bet I'm not.
In the meantime I'm still trucking along on my HAM2, but I am looking at possible replacements. Most notably the new Alcatel Idol 3 looks really really impressive for the price.

Yes, thanks. I'm well aware that they have different hardware.
I said to moan as US customers were told an update would be released in the first quarter of the year..... That hasn't happened.
I'll get flamed again, but even if they did release an update, it would be hard for me to upgrade unless some feature of software took advantage of the update. 4.3 WORKS. Turn it on and use it, don't have to reboot it. Yes, if there are security bugs, that's one thing, but if your device works as delivered, I'm more of a leave it alone, new doesn't always mean better, just new type of person.

Man, the main theme of all your posts is "4.3 is GREAT". In fact, all your posts contain the same information in different wording. We have UNDERSTOOD your preference. I don't understand why you keep repeating it. Its a little bit tactless to be repeating the same post in every thread.

He said he'd get flamed. At least he wasn't disappointed.
There isn't a ton of activity in this forum so I think we can tolerate multiple posts from p51d007.

I've got the latest and greatest lollipop on my nexus 7, I've also got a rooted samsung s3 that has a custom ROM on it. But I must say this phone
the mate 2 is by far my favorite, the battery life is unreal, love the big bright screen. It may not be the latest and greatest but for me it is a great phone.

I actually bought the 1+1 after reading rave reviews about it almost everywhere. I initially intended to keep the 1+1 and give my dad my HAM2. For some reason, the mate 2 was too good to give up. It has everything I want in a phone; large screen, very long battery life, fast, smooth transitions and most importantly it doesn't get hot like a stove. Anyway, at the end, I kept the HAM2 and gave my dad the 1+1. Seriously, I gave up the 1+1 with all its laudatory specs for the HAM2 and I have no regrets.
This phone's screen is too freaking big for me. I already have a tablet, don't need another one thanks. Unfortunately I can't afford to upgrade it right now so I'm stuck with it. And now Xposed broke so now I'm stuck with the ugly grey nav bar and enormous DPI. (EDIT: Nvm, I fixed that.) Seriously, why did Huawei artificially raise the DPI, the native 240 looks so much better than the stock 320, makes everything look much smaller and crisper and gives you more real estate.
I just want Lollipop. Then I'll see if it's worth keeping this phone or if I should make upgrading a priority.
At least the battery life is nice, but that's about all I can say is going for this phone, and I'm willing to bet in part that's because of the lower res (720p) screen.
