Hey guys... I feel like I cannot keep the phone on for more that 72 hours continuously.
I'm using Galaxy SII, G version (I9100G). Currently everything original (no custom rom/kernel)
I believe that most of Android phones have the same problem.
After 50 hours++ of up time of the phone (I mean the phone keeps on for 50 hours), The phone will become noticeable lag, but just a bit, not too much. One of the best evidence is in the game Fruit Ninja. I will feel the lag everytime I slash the fruit.
I'm sure that most apps is closed (except background apps like samsung keypad) and my battery usage graph is in straight horizontal line (without any optimize software, only with BetterBatteryStats). Only 500 - 600MB of RAM is used and I think this is normal.
After I restart the phone, the phone will become smooth and the RAM will be 300 - 400MB used only. Others do not show any difference.
And sure, the phone will repeat the same problem after some hours.
I wish I can keep the phone on continuously and no need to restart it frequently just like normal phones.
Can someone share some experience about this?
Is there any solution for this?
Or this is the nature of Android?
Can Custom ROM solve this?
Your best bet is to use an app killer program so you can close anything and everything running in the background.
Holy... If you mean task killers, I can tell you that it will not work, but will make the situation far worse for Android 2.3 and up...
I use one that's built in to the ROM that I use and my phone runs great for days on end.
I'm using Memory Booster (RAM Optimizer) as my first experiment to solve this problem...
Hi all, I'm hoping for discussion so I chose here instead of simple Q&A.
Like a lot of people here I'm looking ahead to my next phone purchase and I'm trying to see what went wrong with ICS on the Sola. The forum is filled with theads on problems, I won't list them.
Here's the crux of the issue; I read here: http://androidtechguru.blogspot.ie/2012/02/minimum-system-requirements-for-ice.html
that the head Mod of CyanogenMod says that the ICS mimimum spec is 256mb of RAM with a decent GPU, and seperately, other people say that 1ghz dual core, 512 RAM is recommended. The Sola has this precisely. Why is ICS so bad on it? You can Google many, many reviews of even high-end Sony phones on ICS and they still lag like a pensioner going down a motorway. Why?
Is it true that the Sola reserves some RAM related to the extra sensors in the screen? I read more people saying 1GB or RAM is needed for ICS to run smoothly. I noticed that reviewers on Techradar say Jelly Bean runs much better that ICS on the same specs. So, is 1GB of RAM the standard needed for ICS? How about CPU and GPU?
p.s. I should say that a Sony rep on their official forum recommended me to download a task manager to manage the RAM on the Sola...how revealing!
NOTE - Timescape now retired: http://www.xperiablog.net/2013/01/14/rip-timescape-long-live-socialife/
Liked that motorway part
Btw
512mb is sufficient for ics (nexus s)
Its runs ics so smoothly
What sony does is that it adds an extra layer of Timescape launcher
Along wid that loads of bloatware
And regarding using task manager
Its worse one could do make phone unstable
Task manager kills app
Apps then reopen by themselves
Task manager again kills app
And the process continues till the battery is drained
Edit - I have same prblm on my xu sola n xu are twins
Thanks, I'm really trying to learn about how this works.
So, 512MB RAM for ICS, but perhaps more after a manufacturer has added their skin and apps?
Is there any other big problem with the specs for the Sola or U?
Battery drain, has anyone else noticed many of Sony's late 2012 medium-high end phones have 1900mha batteries, but reviews on GSMArena and TechRadar say their actual performance is about 1400/1500? (Check out the Ion, Acro S and others) The opposite can also be true but is rare from what I see - the iPhone5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini have small batteries 1400/1500 but their battery performance is more like 1800-2000. I don't know what Apple and Samsung did to make it that good, but the stats tell me Sony is really messing something up to reduce the battery performance that badly despite 1900. Maybe that is the Timescape UI eating the battery?
I wont say that about Samsung bt for apple
I have used an iphone 3gs and a galaxy note (my dad's)
Note's battery backup is even worse than my xu (probably coz it has always swtiched on 3g n gmail)
I have never seen an android wid good battery (except my brothers htc desire v)
The best battery I got in 3gs
---------- Post added at 10:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:17 PM ----------
My phone gives me a descent battery wid brains rom about 20hrs wid 4hrs of wifi, alot of messaging and hardly any calls
What about sola?
Have a look at this: http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_razr_i_xt890-4998.php
And the battery performance: http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_razr_i_xt890-review-828p2.php (bottom of this page)
I hope you wet yourself when you see this. I did.
64hrs?? Wtf??
I guess its due to intel chipset
I will collect money to buy this now I even beats my Nokia n86
Novathor also has an image of being power efficient
Bt I guess its the sony **** that pulls it down

A normal task manager doesn't do this you're talking about an automated task killer.
It is a feature some of task managers out there have.
If you have a task manager with an auto kill feature you can, in most cases, disable it.
A task manager can help save battery juice, as long as you don't use any auto kill "features".
Its really confusing about Sola, I think the headline of this thread summarize everything.. It just failed.
Well sure thing for me now its not a ram issue, I'm using my Sola lately without task manager, and just by limiting background process to 3, it runs with 30-40 free ram even better and more stable than 120 by a task manager, Android has its own ram management unlike Windows mobile for example where free ram is something important.
I'm using "Watchdog" task manager where it kills only apps that eat CPU not Ram.
Slow performance always start after few days of using, like now I'm in third day without restarting device started to face random lags.
And I think JB could maybe run faster than ICS even with same specs, imo best os is the one able to run good on minimum or normal required specs, like Vista - Win7 thing on laptops , vista was older but crap comparing to win7 even on same specs.
And btw even Sony devices with 1G ram like P, has issues with performance.. So it's either a CPU issue, or Sony customization.

i did notice that the facebook app sucks a lot of battery and resources from sola. On medium usage my phone goes well past a day, that is after i upgraded to .154 and uninstalling the facebook app
Check out the other Motorola phones released just before Christmas, they ALL have batteries above 2000mha! I have checked many reviews and they all seem to perform up to a very high standard. I have even chatted on here with guys who own these phones and they post battery stats lasting 2-3 days!! That's what I'm talking about...Motorola is apparently using a giant advertisment in the US saying 'A smartphone is not so smart if you have to leave it plugged into the wall all the time'.
I didn't notice the Xperia P had 1GB of RAM, and it's still slow??? I really think that's Sony's skin then. I've been reading many phones with 1GB of RAM that are really fast on ICS/JB.
By the way, that Motorola RAZR i...single core 2ghz, the GSMArena tests say that it performs better than most quad-core phones...shocking huh? Intel says the single core saves power.

Well i own a xu and i cant agree with you, ics here works fine and i have lots of apps installed too, ram usage is high but system is smooth overall and i havent had a single crash or reboot yet (been almost 3 weeks with ics).Cant be happier with my phone.
Edit: Btw it is not rooted and its bootloader locked, runing ics stock.
Even my very low end LG p500 with 512MB ram and a arm v6 600Mhz cpu can run ics just fine, even with old kernel, lack of sources, hacks, etc. I was using oxygen ics at the time.
In my opinion it only require a proper rom building, where most of the companies are failing.

My friend's XU also working great on ICS, it's also stock, not rooted, locked BL..

I also have LG P500 and with lastest Jelly bean 4.1.2 build from XDA masters works super fast and smooth. Ram free is about 200MB, apps loads instantly. Battery last for 3 days...

Well guess u folks lucky, coz i had some major issues running ICS on my U. Was practically forced to first root (so as to use some root tools to get stuff done,) then Unlock BL for Custom ROM. (Very Happy with CM9.1 - Was pretty happy just using TheBrainROM also, but I did get a Lag once in a while -Not very common, just once in a while. Using CM fxp 202 atm, and it hasn't lagged even once. O_O )
NOTE:- I did have a LOT of apps (over 100 user apps i believe), stilll I have most of them on CM but, no problems at all. (battery seems a bit worse though i could be wrong as TheBrainROM had some really good battery times, - I would get upto 1 and half days with charge. -Phone never on extended standby.)
Also @Silver If u think Windows 7 was good, check the performance on Windows 8. Heck even games are running smoother and faster. :/
Sony ends Timescape for future phones, converts everything into one option user app called Sociallife: http://www.xperiablog.net/2013/01/14/rip-timescape-long-live-socialife/
Maybe the 2013 phones will see a performance boost?
Well I'm using stock .54 without task managers for 5 days now without restart, device is running great, even with receiving calls while I'm using many apps.
For me using task managers with "Kill All" was the problem.

Before the Sola, I had the 2011 Xperia Mini (ST15i). It came on 2.3 with upgrade to 4.0. I gave it to my brother when I got the Sola. Tonight, I played with that phone again on ICS. It is *SO* fast and smooth it really puts the Sola phone to shame.
Comparisson of these two phones?
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=4408&idPhone2=3947
This is another thing about buying new phones: dual-core does not necessarily mean better performance from what I've seen. A more powerful processor, yes.

I was thinking about keeping the Sola's resolution in the next phone, particularly to take it easy on the battery. Would you recommend that to keep the CPU relaxed too? I really don't know a lot about how this works but I'm keen to learn.
By the way, for anyone else interested on Android skins and updates, I spotted more hints on Sony's 2013 phone skins, Sony mentions it will be 'very light and easily updated':

I noticed, that the count off active cores is most of the time only or max two cores.even in gaming or benchmarking...
Could this be the problem for the bad gaming performance since jb update?on playing vice city i recogniced that the framerate raises a lot when all four cores are active.this happens some time for a few seconds, then it returns back to one or two active cores and the game starts lagging....
Any solution so far?or is there anybody still on ics to test if it is the same activitie there?
I used cpu stats to tes cause it shows cores activities in statusbar.
No one?doesnt really anybody give a s**t bout this tablet???
Know how you feel, I have a htc desire phone which is running for 3years and still has (few) active developers.. Here's like nobody home.. Probably because bootloader is still locked.. I don't have time atm but I really want to try to root my xperia tablet.. We'll see what the future holds..
For the cores.. Probably bad tuning by Sony devs, this is likely how they managed battery to last longer, ok but not for gaming..
They upgraded to kernel 3 which is a good thing, but they kinda f***** it up..
Know you're not alone and don't forget anything is possible..!!

Seems you aren't to active yourself..
I kinda feel the same too. I have a Nexus One which is pretty old but with 4.2.2 on and a lot of roms to choose.
With this tablet I feel abandoned. It is a shame because it's a great tablet, nice design, good materials.
If only they let us unlock the bootloader...
Fix core count on Xperia tablet S after JB update.

Hi, since i finally can post here, Yes, the Xperia tablet S with the Tegra3 will only run on 2 cores.
I know how to fix this,
First off, factory reset (backup blabla) Why? Because when you update to jb and dont factory reset after the upgrade, it will be very laggy and buggy, dunno why, it try it. - could also just skip this if you dont want to back up and etc
Second, install an app calld tegra overclock.
Third, after that, open the app, go to core count, enable all cores, enable on boot, done, should run way way smoother and faster.
And last, thanks button if this worked
Note: App isnt free. but uhm, google
Hello, this is my first post in the Samsung section, i just sold my xperia sp, because it gave me a lot of head ache, always freezing and lagging, scrolling is laggy too, not always, but 70% of the time, specially when multitasking, and what i mean by multitasking is just every day usage stuff,
switching between messenger and facebook is really pain in the ass, very slow and laggy, scrolling on Facebook is very laggy most of the time and i have to re-install the app every few days to prevent it from being laggy again
when i first enable wifi or mobile date, the phone will freeze for 5 seconds, because it couldn't handle all the received notifications at the same time and i have to wait at least 15 seconds for the phone to settle
apps force closing on me, home icons disappearing, and sometimes i get a blank empty app drawer ... and many other horrible things this phone did to torture me
so my question is, will i face the same fate if i get a galaxy s3 ? i am mainly interested in the lte variant with 2gb of ram !! because i already know that the international variant is as slow as my sp , perhaps a little better .

Xperia sp is not a bad phone, it has 1.7ghz dual core krait by qualcomm. I'm wondering for a user who can make a thread on xda, why can't you handle your lag problem? Maybe with installing an aosp rom, or add some tweaks, or etc

you will not understand what i mean only after you use one , xperia sp is the slowest phone ever made, it's kernel and software are not optimized at all, the phone on paper is very nice, but in real life, it's a nightmare to use.
it tends to freeze and lag on the slightest tasks, like getting notifications and message from facebook, scrolling in messenger and facebook gets very very sluggish because of very bad software and very bad ram management, almost every time you use youtube , or facebook, when you press the home button, the home icons disappear for few seconds, also, in the morning, or after few hours with data/wifi off, when you turn one of them on, the phone will freeze for 10 seconds, and keep acting slow for other 10 seconds, bcuz it couldn'tt handle one messagee and two facebook or update norification..
the only thing that works nice on this phone is video games( adreno 320+720p) but it's useless most of the time in heavy games, asphalt 8 and modern combat5, rr3 always start to lag then crash to home beceause ram gets very low ( bad ram management ?)
tried all official available roms, trie all available custum roms, the phone still slow, but sightley better with lilttle more free ram
the only occasion where the phone is smooth is when wifi/data off, n o background apps, and exploring the menu , also after factory reset, but gets bogged down as soon as you install few social apps that always like to stay in background...
i hope you don't get xperia sp
i tried all tweaks, they don't help much..

Wew i don't know if it was that bad. I've tried Xperia L and i'm pretty satisfied with it's performance, but unfortunately it has a very bad screen quality. You can't use 2 fingers at the same time on it, nice phone but destroyed by ****ty screen LOL
Btw, how if xsp was compared to xl? I only can imagine xsp's performance with that way
i tried xperia s, sp, ion, and all of lag very bad after few weeks from a fresh install , even after fresh install, you can see it freeze when installing apps specially, or receiving notifications. all are the same ****. only sony phone i used that doesn't lag is xperia z1
no matter what it won't bog down, but it has ghost screen that sony won't fix, replaced the phone 3 times, and always i end up with the same ghost typing my screen when the phone heats up, so i sold it yesterday. now i think it's not worth paying much money for expensive phone, samsung s3 has nice screen, i am interrested in the i9305, my brother had the 9300 it was laggy too
so if you have 9305,, i ask if it lag or no, very simple question

Ive owned both, and I have to say the lte variant is a cracking phone! Best hardware in its time. Vs the moto g 2014 which can be picked up for around the same priced (although s3 lte will be used or refurbished to be as cheap) its great. The extra ram is the key here, thats why the sp (which I also have owned) sucks hard, as does the standard s3 on stock, although it was pretty good on cm11
How much battery, RAM, and CPU optimization matters on Android? Cause I'm getting 10hrs of screen on time on a 3700mAh battery.
So I have been using this Snapdragon 710 phone for over a year now and it's giving me at the very least 10h screen on time. ( Yes you read that right. 10 hrs on an average )
Things to note here -
• I don't use a SIM card
• My phone is constantly connected to a Wifi and a VPN
• I play games like FIFA or PES 40 minutes to an hour a day
• Rest of the time I browse Reddit, Insta, FB, watch Netflix and Youtube
• I do not use auto-sync and location
I recall using stock ROM (realMe UI) 8 months ago and it used to give me 6hrs of screen on time at best. Now that I'm using ROMs like Pixel Experience, RevengeOS, Oxygen OS, MSM Extended I get a much better battery backup. I don't close apps. Simply minimize them when not in use. My CPU always runs at a lower clock speed but the phone never slowed down or stuttered, thanks to 6GBs of RAM.
I went to stock ROM a few days earlier and used it for a week to check if I was wrong. Found out stock is still giving me 6hrs on an average which makes me wonder how much difference good software can make.
I do comprehend the fact that using a mobile network would cost some more juice. Then again, since I'm rooted I could use WakeBlock or Servicely to limit a lot of unnecessary background process that Play Services or apps like FB, Insta creates.
I'm sorry if it was poorly written. I hope you get what I'm saying. If you've ever encountered something like that please let me know. I saw people complaining about bad battery backup on phones with a 4500+ mAh battery. Can't phone companies do something about that?
