What version was installed on your device before going back to stock? If it was v20j or 20l and you have installed v20e or lower than it is bricked. You cannot downgrade from v20j

I was on e upgrading to l

[Q] Galaxy S2 - Unknown USB Device - Device Not recognized

Disclaimer:
I've searched all over the forum and found few close to my problem but this seems different
Background:
I recently flashed my Galaxy S2 International version with CM9 nightly build. Since then, when I turn off the phone and put it for charging, the battery charging animation stays like that till the phone is fully charged unlike the stock ROM where that animation disappears after some time.
Simultaneously I've noticed something else, when my phone is plugged to USB cable attached to my computer, a pop up appears at the bottom right (notification area) which says "USB Device not recognized" and in Device Manager it's listed as "Unknown Device"
I ignored it thinking that it might be an issue with the CM9 Build as it's not fully functional. I've had the phone that way for around 10 days.
Recently I thought of switching to XXLPQ(Official ICS Update) and I got into Download Mode but Odin doesn't see the phone. No "communication" establishing between phone and computer.
I also had CM7.1 on SD Card and I thought flashing that old CM might bring my USB functionality back.
So got into ClockWork Mod Recovery and flashed it. Flash was successful. But now phone is in boot loop with "Samsung Galaxy S2" with an exclamation.
If I try to press and hold the power button, it comes back to that battery charging screen even though phone is not plugged to either USB or charger.
I can get into download mode(Odin can't see the phone) but not into Recovery Mode.
Three things that I see as of now on my phone are the boot loop I mentioned above or Download Mode (but not recognized by Odin) or Battery Charging animation.
I'm sure there's nothing wrong with USB Cables or Drivers or Kies or anything else. Because my brother's S2 works just fine which is on "Stock ROM".
I need help. I'm sure that CM9 nightly broke that basic USB Device functions on the phone.
Please let me know if there is any alternative for recovering my S2. I know that the worst is, it goes to Repair Center.
But I hate to give up on this!!
Are there any other tools or recovery softwares which can be used to re-flash the phone other than Odin no matter what screwed up state the phone is in!?
Deleted - sorry, hadn't read your post properly.
firstly i want to ask does your phone charges? if it does it sounds like u dont have development option enabled.. or ur usb port is broken.. if it doesnt charges then im pretty sure ur usb port is broken...
about the recovery.. can u use ur SD card on ur brother's SG2 and put stock rom into it? and then insert it into ur SG2 and try flashing it throught CWM

Thanks for the response Warrez!
- Phone charges (but that battery charging logo stays like that)
- When I flashed CM9 nightly I'm sure I haven't checked or played with Development option (It's not enabled)
- And last, I'm not able to get into Recovery Mode as well (already mentioned above)
Any other inputs!?
I have the EXACT same problem
Me too exact same problem .
I've confirmed my setup is fine as it works with Odin for my tab 7.7
Exact same issue, stuck at Samsung logo with exclamation mark. Can't get into recovery, can get into download but computer says device not recognised .
I was running Slim ics at the time then about to switch to cm9 and siyah kernel

Well.. I made some progress in last few days! I've taken out the battery and got into Download Mode. I was holding buttons and my brother inserted the battery. What I did was I powered of the system and connected the phone while it was in "Download Mode". I waited for some time.. Say more than 3-4 mins.
Rebooted my PC and once it's back it wasn't saying anything. For my surprise I see the "Yellow COM" established in Modem. Without delay I grabbed recovery ROM which is posted in one of the sticky threads. Flashed the phone.
Now, it got little interesting! When the phone is booted back post flashing it shows that "MTP Device" even though USB Cable isn't plugged into it!
When I turn off the phone, it either reboots back without hesitation or ends up at "big green battery charging" animation!
To get back into OS, I have to get into recovery mode and then I use "Reboot System"!
And that "USB Device malfunctioned or not recognized" thing is intermittent.
At times it says that and at times it establishes "COM connection" in Odin.
I re-flashed old bootloader thinking that it might be a phone's basic operating driver issue. But that didn't solve the issue!
I've even flashed latest stock European ICS Firmware.
And with ICS, things got even more interesting!
It started throwing up new message "Charging Paused due to over voltage"
What I'm sure of is.. It's definitely got to do with CM9 ICS. Because when I was on beta official ICS before I switched to CM9 Nightly phone was working like a charm! As soon as I flashed CM9 Nightly, I started getting that "USB Device Not recognized" issue with the battery irregularities.
I wasn't sure how I could get the phone recognized in Odin. Hastily I flashed CM7.1 on CM9 compatible ClockWorkMod Recovery enabled Kernel. That is when the problem got more complicated!!
I'm about to give up and pay someone to fix it via Jtag.
I've tried several computers, several cables , multiple reboots and everything else.
Windows just still says usb device not recognized so the phone must be corrupted somewhere.
Please change ur USB cable, i had this problem n its only frm the cable.
I don't believe this.........
I had tried two other cables ( a nokia usb>micro usb and another one ) as i had lost my samsung usb>micro usb lead and both those said unrecognised device....
I had just given up, ordered a jtag repair and then my old dear finds the samsung cable!!!!
Bizarely it now recognises the phone.
Hi Guys
I am having the exact same problem and am still looking for a solution.
My phone is not recognised by the PC after installing CM9 Nightly and now I am stuck until I can get the device driver installed again so that I can use Odin.
I am using the official Samsung USB cable which worked fine until the CM9 flash.
I am assuming this is a common problem so am hoping that somebody can supply a fix asap.
Any help will be appreciated

I had the almost the same problem .. I took it to the place I bought from .. and fix it .. they told me it was a hardware problem ( I remember with the hard disk .. I forgot )

Now there's no way i can't use Odin to flash official rom!

Last time I checked.. My phone is getting detected in Odin. But not always! Every 5 attempts it sure is seen by Odin 2-3 times. And it's on ICS 4.0.3 XXLPQ with "Charging Paused high voltage detected" message even though it's not plugged to charger or USB Cable.
My brother advised me to leave the phone that way and wait till it goes dead and then keep it dead for at least a week and then try charging it fresh with phone's stock charger. Now 5 days passed and I'm waiting for another 2 days to try this out!
Cheers,
A.

Gee.. Try this! Take the battery out of the phone and press the power button for few secs with the battery out. Take someones help to put the battery back while you are holding the download mode button combination.
When you get into download mode, leave the phone that way and do not plug it to the USB Cable. Power off the PC and wait of 3 mins. Now connect the phone to the USB Cable while the PC is still off and phone is in Download mode.
Turn the PC on and wait for till it reaches desktop and then give it 3-4 mins. Now launch Odin. If you have any luck you should see that "yellow COM"!
The same procedure worked for me! If you happen to see that "yellow COM" on Odin don't delay anymore. Just flash any stock ROM. 2.3.6 or 4.0.3!
P.S.
Odin may not see the phone on the first attempt. If so.. Repeat the steps for 2-3 times
All the best!
Cheers,
A.

Usb port of my Samsung infuse 4G isn't wotking, when connected it charges but pc doesn't recognize. I've tried with different USB cables. when camera is opened it gets stuck and shows black screen. i thought this could be a problem with ROM but i was unable to update ROM as my PC doesn't recognize it, i'm able to enter download mode using OSB jig but still odin doesn't recognize it. it has Android 2.2.1 installed on it and it has not been rooted. did you try to make a backup of your contacts on your SD card and do a factory reset of the phone. It might be some setting. It happened to me couple of times on my HTC while working with the HTC stock ROM.
If it didn't work you might try to follow this guide

I am having the same issues. I have 2 of these phones that are doing the same thing. Both have been rooted but NO new ROMS have been downloaded. Both phones worked fine with the stock USB cable until 2 days ago & I haven't been able to get either to be recognized by 2 seperate computers. One is Win 7 32bit, the other is XP. I can get them to show 2 portable drives; however, when I click on either, or try to drag & drop in them, it tells me to insert a disk.About to go ape crappers! HELP!
I have this exact same problem on my Infuse: USB port works for charging but the computer doesn't recognize it and the device acts as if I plugged it into a USB -> AC power adapter, and when I bring up the camera it's just a black screen and controls that don't do anything. I just tried resetting to factory defaults, even rooted it and flashed to another ROM (ZEUS) and it's still having the same problems. I'm just wondering whether it's a hardware or software problem. Anybody figured out a fix yet?

S3 Bricked [Soft?]

Hello all, I have a GS3 international GT-I9300
I'll try to go through the story as fast as I can and give as much detail so you guys can understand how I got here.
Bought the phone unlocked, I was stock, I rooted and then I decided to install a new ROM. I went with Resurrection Remix, it was working great. I did this on a desktop back home. They released a new update to RR so I did a OTA update with "Update Me" apparently the thing flashed but it didn't, the phone still worked but NFC wasn't working as well as having lost root access and some other stuff wasn't working correctly, but I lived with it.
I moved to Florida (home is in NY) and I have a laptop with me, for some reason my laptop used to be able to transfer files to my S3, but it wasn't doing it any more after a while. So it would just charge it. I was in a hotel room last week trying to tether via USB but the PC wasnt having it, it could not locate the phone. This week I moved to a different hotel with internet and decided I would flash stock on my S3 to get rid of all these bugs and get root again, I tried flashing stock through recovery and it wasn't going, so I tried flashing RR again (this time downloaded from the site RR site) and it worked. Still no USB connection but I had root back. I looked around my PC and apparently the Samsung drives are not installing or something on my PC. I installed Kies, but nothing, I tried a stand alone driver install and nothing, so I just gave up and bought Mobile Odin pro from Gplay to try to flash again.
Mobile Odin for some reason (I blame it on myself) wasn't finding/flashing stock so again I decided to try and flash RR and see what would happen. It flashed RR and turned on fine. Then I just decided to look for an NFC fix on XDA. Once I found my NFC fix (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32029713&postcount=8367) I decided to just copy the files to the system folder, NFC still not working, rebooted and NFC still no working, so I figured I would try to flash the fix through mobile odin seeing as how I can't get my PC to pick up on the USB. I tried flashing but MO just kept bouncing it back and re-booting into RR. Tried again and no flash. So I decided to again try and flash stock. I tried going into Recovery, the phone shut off like it always does, came back on but stayed in the Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 logo and would not move. I shut it off again, tried turning it on again and still stuck on the galaxy logo. Now, if I leave the phone off and plug in the USB, it won't show the battery charging image, it will actually turn straight onto the galaxy logo again and stay there. I can get the phone into download mode, but like I said my pc won't recognize the drivers.
Now, here are my questions:
What happened?
Can this be fixed?
Am I an idiot?
If I can get the drivers installed on another PC as well as Odin (1.85), will the new PC "see" the S3 or are the drivers on the phone deleted as well? (if that sort of thing can happen, idk.)
I'm going to see if I can borrow a buddy's PC and download the drivers as well as odin to try and bring my S3 back to life, I just want to know, what happens if I can't get the other PC to pick it up ether because the drivers on the phone are deleted (if that's a thing) or what I can expect if it is connected.
What are the steps or guides to follow here? I just got it into Download mode and it says on the top of the screen:
ODIN MODE
Product name: GT-I9300
Custom Binary Download: Yes (2 counts)
Current Binary: Custom
System Status: Custom
sorry , i am sometime getting headache reading long english text so i just briefly look over.
your PC doesn't recognize your S3 ? is that correct ? hmmm , is it possible that your PC (Microsoft Windows I assume?) system is damaged due to something like virus or some reasons ? i have encountered that kinda problem before and be OK after i reinstalled the system.
If it's a soft brick, then it can defiantly be fixed. You might, however, lose your data along the process.
Be glad it's not hard bricked
It happened to me many times, USB error "unknown device" connected. Only fix for it was reinstalling Windows so better if you can use different PC or laptop. Install Kies and other USB drivers. Restart computer, download and run Odin v 3.0x. Flash your phone.
If this doesn't work then maybe your phone have a problem with USB port?

Try this method!
If you think it is a software problem, try this:
Source: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_Duos/GT-S7562
Code:
Recovery Mode
Recovery mode can be entered by switching the device off and pressing the following buttons; VOL UP + VOL DOWN + HOME + POWER
When the phone vibrates let go of the buttons.
Note: It can take several attempts to enter recovery mode, so do not give up immediately!
After entering recovery mode, wipe the phone but beware, it will delete all the data in the internal memory. So take a backup of all your data, contacts, messages, before you do this.
After you perform wipe, reboot the phone. It will take longer than usual but after that you will be on the screen.
You can use your phone as a new phone and try charging again.
Press thanks if I have helped!

I Already Tried But With No Result
If the device is not charging properly and you know for certain that it is not an issue with the cable/charging block/etc, then most likely it is an issue with the USB port itself. Unfortunately, for that phone, the part is soldered to the motherboard and not a repair for a casual DIY tech. That said, your easiest work around will be to buy an extra battery and an external battery charger. Then you just pop in the new battery and leave the other to charge on the wall. I actually miss being able to do this (I have a Nexus) as it does not require you to be plugged into the wall, just the battery in the charger. If you need to transfer files without the port, there are numerous solutions via wifi and BT.

Yes , Its Charging And Working With USB Cable Very Well
Ok, well then if it all works fine and is just cosmetic, your choices are to factory reset and see if it is an easy fix or to reload the OS with Odin (and reset).

That's what I figured... So, pretty sure either the port is bad, or it's a hardware (motherboard) issue. If it were only that warning on the PC, then one might think driver issue, but that combined with the charging issue, makes me think otherwise - assuming the cord works and syncs properly with other phones. You said you had already restocked the OS with Odin, but that does not seem likely due to the error on the PC. Just a hard reset does not affect /system much, so if there IS an issue with the software, a factory (hard) reset wouldn't do much. If you remove all Samsung drivers and Kies programs, reboot, and reinstall Kies (for the drivers) and you still get that message, then it's most likely hardware related.

It's not unheard of that roms can cause connection issues, but very rare on stock based roms and kernels. If the computer doesn't recognize the phone then it might be tricky to root. It's possible that you could root with an app like Framaroot and then install Mobile Odin and flash the firmware from the phone, but it depends on what build version of the software you have to which root methods are supported.
