Question about rooted LG5 and Nougat - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Dear XDA,
I've rooted my LG-H850 some months ago. After some time i decided to update my phone to a new rom and saw that Nougat finally came out for the LG G5.
Now i'm reading the topic from Fulmics 1.0 and saw the following : '''Just flash in TWRP recovery after performing necessary wipes. Be aware that you have to be on Nougat bootloader, so make sure to have installed official nougat KDZ first.'.
I did some reading around on XDA but is still leaves me with some questions and i hope i can get some information about it.
People are talking about LG Bridge.
I haven't checked this out so far. My phone has TWRP and a custom rom on it.
If it's possible to update my phone, is it safe to do it this way?
Also i've seen people talking about a KDZ file. It has been a while since i rooted my phone and if i remember correctly you needed to use the KDZ to get TWRP on it. Correct me if i'm wrong.
If i install this KDZ file, am i ready to go and flash the Fulmics rom?
And if this is so, where can i find this file?
Sorry for the noobish questions but i reallly want to safely update my phone.
Thank you for reading!
With kind regards,
MarshalSmit

Thank you for your reply. I totally forgot to mention i have an LG-H850. Does this works for the H850 as well?

Anyone that can help me ?

I also have H850. I was rooted on MM. All I did was flash N KDZ with LGUP. Then I falshed TWRP (N version). Then I Flashed SuperSU (N version) from TWRP. For now I'm using rooted LG stock (N). I honestly don't see the point of custom ROM for now...it works great, smooth, battery life is good (approx the same as on MM).

I've done everything you have said and the phone worked perfectly with SU and all.
After that i installed Fulmics on it. After i restarted my phone it gave me an message that the phone encription had failed and that i needed to reset the phone. With my stupid head i pressed on this button.
Currently i'm getting instantly booted to TWRP and that's it.
Did i just fully bricked my phone?
// Starting the phone connected to a charger fixed it for some reason .

How to: Update LG G2 D802 (FlashKDZ/Root/Recovery/Hiddenmenu/troubleshooting)(n2n)

(FlashKDZ/Root/Recovery/Hiddenmenu/troubleshooting) (noob2noob guide)
Okay, this is my first thread on XDA, the reason I'm making it is there is a lots of problems with progressing to lollipop. All of this is already mentioned in the forum, but this way it is much easier since it is all at one place. If I'm doing something wrong please warn me with explanation how to resolve the issue. If I'm posting in wrong forum section please move my thread where it is supposed to be.
1. Before doing anything check if your phone is ready to get updated:
1.1 Do you have a stock Kitkat rom or at least a rom that is kitkat based, since there can be a problem with partitioning if custom lollipop rom is installed
1.2 Create a backup. Don't be lazy LG backups will not help you since they can't go from kitkat to lollipop, don't try to do it from recovery because you will lose custom recovery. Copy your files from phone including extracted contacts, and back it up online with google or some other backup providers.
1.3 Check if you have a latest touch firmware, because you might have a problems after installing lollipop and it will be hard for you to check for updates since your touch might become useless.
1.3.1 To check it go to hidden service menu by typing 3845#*802# and go under HW Device Test, then Touch Test then touch firmware version and write everything down. After that go to touch firmware upgrade and after 15 seconds compare the touch firmware version values with those you written down.
1.4 In hidden Menu you can also go to wlan test then ota setting to check if it is disabled on your phone. After that check again if there is OTA updates for your phone, and also check if there is PC suite Update.
1.5 Check your phones version if it is D802, D800 or something else, and check which rom you have installed. You can do this in settings about phone or if you are happy about hidden menu found, go there and into settings then version info. This might not be interesting or fun to do, but it will save you the trouble if something goes wrong, because you will know what to ask.
1.6 Last but not the least, before starting to flash fill up your battery, i've read some posts that say there are problems with wrong capacity shown, and a lots of battery drain problems, and only solution till now is to have a full battery on start.
2. You will need LG FlashTool and of course installed drivers for your G2 on your PC.
All of that you can get in the thread by @quangnhut123 .
2.1 Just a bit of precautions, don't forget to always copy a kdz file in to Flashtool folder and then start a tool. All should look the same as in that thread, except you should always use CSE method because with this method you will install kdz from scratch, removing everything from the phone.
2.2 You should find the kdz file which suits for your phone on site . You can check for kdz by typing in imei in check new firmware section or find the one for yourself by searching the site. v30a is lollipop open while v30d is for branded G2's.
(I've read that this site is not allowed by Xda moderators, so if I can't post it please give me info on where should we download kdz's from).
2.3 I think it's all pure logic now but lets say it one more time. You have downloaded kdz file, and put it inside LG Flashtool folder. You should now start Flashtool and get your phone into Download mode. To do this you need to hold volume up button on turned off device and connect usb cable while holding volume up. Now just cse flash.
2/3 This is troubleshooting step, if you have a problem ask and i hope this great community will help you like they did to me, and ofc I will do my best to help.
3. Now we go to rooting.
Here is the thread by @avicohh which worked for my D802.
Just follow his step by step tut and you will have a rooted phone
3.1 The only issue that might happen here is you are stuck with # and adb waiting for your phone. To resolve this just go into download mode manually.
4. Okay rooting done, now let's go to custom recovery install
It's easy as installing an app from google play by @bender_007
4.1 After installing it open the app and follow the on-screen instructions. If it fails for the first time, try it few more times, it will eventually work. (OFC. I didn't install it with only one try).
4.2 To get into custom recovery hold volume down and power button till first LG sign shows up, then release both buttons and quickly press them again. It will ask you do you want to do factory reset, press yes and yes again, and it will get you to custom recovery if you installed it.
4.2.1 If you factory reset your phone that means you didn't install recovery correctly and you will lose your data, but again that should be no problem since you have that backup from the start.
Now optional steps:
5. Install system app remover to remove bloatware from your phone. You can do it manually but this way you will have those apps backed up.
6. Next suggestion is to install a few mods if you need them. In my case I had to have a Plug and pop, since it is lost from Lollipop and I loved that feature. Here is a thread on how to install that mod by @p_a_r_s_a7
//That's all, if you have any questions feel free to ask, since there is no dumb questions, but also try to read carefully before//
Thanks to:
@quangnhut123
@avicohh
@p_a_r_s_a7
@bender_007
A lot of others whose names i can't remember. If anyone else needs to be mentioned PM me and i will add you in this section.
I will add pictures and stuff if needed
Thanks, good all-in-one thread, + easiest methods. Ill recommend it‚to others
This forum is such a mess that a thread like this is like a fresh breath of air. Every advice given on other threads references something that you should already know how it's done, or you should already have done to your phone in the past and have a certain version of it, or non-working tools that are only around for a few months until an update makes them unusable.
No wonder that most of the first-page topics, including pinned ones, have the word "brick" in the title. This should signal the forum moderators that something is wrong around here.
My phone is stock international sim-free G2, never rooted or otherwise modified and yet no one was able to offer a coherent solution of how to update to Lollipop, until your post.
So, thanks for this thread.
Thank you, that is exactly why i made the thread. Every one of those threads has everything explained, but you need to search theough 150 pages to understand how something is done. That's why i wanted to make a thread with all explanations made in a single post and to make it noob friendly since the worst thing that happens in other threads is answer like use a search you have it somewhere.
Hi,
Thanks for the thread. It really helps noobs like me, but I still have a couple of questions...
I was running Paranoid Android L rom with root, twrp and kk bootloader on My D802.
I didn't see this thread before I decided to downgrade back to 4.2.2 stock rom, and now I don't really know what steps to take.(I have kernel version 3..4.0 and build number JDQ39B)
I haven't seen an OTA available, so I was thinking of flashing new Lollipop rom kdz file. But I've been seeing stuff about using LG PC suite to upgrade via OTA so i wasn't sure.
So my main question is that do I do an OTA upgrade on my current 4.2.2 stock rom or do I download an official Lollipop rom? Can you give me a brief idea of the steps to take?
Thanks

Updating through pc suite or ota is the best way if it is available to you. Flashing kdz is the same thing but that is doing it manually while through pc auite nad ota is pretty much automatic. Anyways which ever way you decide to use be sure to fully charge your battery and factory reset acter the update. If you need anything else feel free to ask

No need to flash bootloader if you didnt flash it for paranoid android. And definitely no need to root since you can root after update.
Problems with flashing KDZ
I have downloaded Spain Lolipop KDZ file for LG G2 D802.
Have backed up everything usint TWRP> ( Presently on Optimus G3 rom v 1.4.1 with dorimanx kernel and TWRP )
I have copied the KDZ file to the flash tool. When i use CSE flash .. it takes me to the next page .. in which I click on Start which then opens up the LG Mobile support tool.
Then it shows detecting ur phone .. unpacking or extracting file .. after that shows software updating .. reaches 2 % and then shows error .. asks me to retry .
Do you know what I am doing wrong ? or the cause of this prob ?

Had the same problem when flashing kitkat kdz. Are you sure that you have pasted kdzfile inside flashtool. If that is not the problem try other kdz. That helped me
Where are you from and more specifically whhere your phone is from so i can maybe help you with finding right kdz. And btw i think you might have a problem when trying to restore that backup so if you still can backup your phone manually or on the cloud.

Hi again..
OTA update to Lollipop has failed on my D802, LG PC Suite only upgraded me from Android 4.2.2 to 4.4.2, so can anyone help me out here?
Am I missing something for OTA update? If not, then which lollipop kdz can I download for my phone so that I can flash? I live in UK and i use a 3 UK sim if that helps
but also, In the process of trying to boot into my previously installed TWRP recovery, I discovered that i have been restored to stock recovery. I have rooted the phone, but just wanted to clarify: I flash custom recovery, then bootloader/kernel then lollipop kdz?
Thanks again

I am not sure but i think that update for the uk didnt come out yet. so you can't update to lollipop yet via pc suite or ota. and you got it all wrong. first you flash lollipop kdz but you will have to try out few of them since official for uk didn't come out yet, after that you root, and then flash custom recovery.
and as previously you will be back to stock recovery after update. you have it all explained step by step in first post. i know it is a bit long but that is the best way, since i didn't want to write stuff like "you should know that" and so on. so just follow the first post and you will be happy, or wait for official uk update over the ota you will be happy too, and i guess it should come out in a month.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I'll download all the lollipop kdz's and see which one of them works for me till the UK one comes out then I'll just do a normal flash over it.
But seriously, one month for the UK ota :crying: Right now, I don't even know which is worse: Google that takes forever to release updates with so many bugs, or Apple who generally release better stable updates but make older devices laggy...
Thanks again for all the help.

its a good update, not that buggy, and be sure to fully charge your battery before the process. you should try europe open or something like that, but there is no german or uk release yet and some guys suspect it is slowed down because they found out bugs in other versions

Where from is your phone? Are you sure you flashed right kdz? Did lollipop even turn off? DidCSE flashing finished sucessfully? I would like to help you, but i cant if you dont explainme what is your problem. I am not some pro who faced every error on every phoneso please explain a bit more
And i suppose that erasing screen could have been factory reset on stock recovery

I believe mine is an international version. Where it came from, well, I'm from the Philippines and I got my phone from a local telecom, Globe.
The flash tool said that it was successfully upgraded, but judging from the phone's behavior I think there's something wrong. My phone never started successfully, and I got stuck in the LG logo.

NEEd Help Security Error G3 LS990!

Recently I Rooted My Sprint G3 Lolipop. Had no Issues there. Then I wanted to install TWRP, So I downloaded AutoRec, waited for the app to confirm everything and installed it. When I turned my phone off and tried to reboot into recovery, it Gives me a screen that has the LG Logo and it says Security Error and turns back off. I can still go into download mode but thats all I can do.
Ive read the other posts for this problem but i havent found one for my specific Phone.
Can anybody please help me with step by step Instructions?? Im still not super expirenced in rooting phones and the other phones I have rooted have always been successful..
Sprint LG G3 5.0.1
LS990ZVC
Heres a link to that same problem. The member experiencing the issue fixed it by flashing a .tot file from a previous ZV version he went from ZVA to ZV4 u should be able to do that i believe by using the 2014 lg flash tool, look it up. While i dont like flashing different ZV versions myself i think u might be safe for the most part.
Me personally think but might be wrong so dont quote me.. Lol but i would flash using a ZVB tot/kdz in the 2014 flash tool and i believe the lg support tool will then upgrade u back to ZVC if not the LGUPtool i mean your taking it from a noob but i think i stand correct here lol

Full restore to stock, no root, no twrp, no unlocked bootloader

I am on tmobile lg g5, twrp installed, unlocked bootloader, rooted, running fulmics. I am returning the phone since the gps issues are becoming worse, and it has even started dropping cell service almost hourly which requires me to reboot. Can I completely restore to stock via flashing in twrp? Trying to avoid having to drive somewhere and use LGUP on a windows PC as I don't own one. Will the bootloader automatically relock if I flash the stock rom without flashing SU along with it? Appreciate any help.

There are stock ROMs (H83020a and H83020c) available to flash from twrp. You will not lock your bootloader nor lose twrp; but in order to get root again(in case you want), you will need to flash su. It worked for me perfectly and I have no issues with anything on my phone. The only thing that does not work (check screenshot for details) is google pay because since the phone is rooted "it does not meet the google's security standards." Now if you want to return the phone to factory state I believe there are threads here for that. If you still want to keep the phone just flash the appropriate zip and enjoy removing tmobile bloatware if you wish.
LG G5 Downloads:
Important!!!Do not flash H83010a. I read that it can brick your phone.
TMobile model is H830.
Android 6.0.1 is H83010i
Android 7.0 is H83020a and the latest version is H83020c. Find the zip of your choice.

Ok. If you're wanting to do 100% stock, download the complete zip for 20c from http://downloads.codefi.re/autoprime/LG/LG_G5/H830/H83020c/LG-H83020c-Flashable.COMPLETE-ARB01.zip there. Put it on your extsd card. Backup everything that is on your internal sd (phone memory) like pictures, videos, SMS, etc. Once you've done that, boot to TWRP. Once in TWRP wipe everything except externalsd card, I also recommend using the format option to format the internal sd. Once you've wiped and preferably formatted data go to install and install the 20c complete zip you put on your extsd card. After it's done installing just reboot. This will overwrite TWRP and you will NOT have root. Your bootloader will still be unlocked though, so you still need a PC to relock your bootloader. Also I don't think encryption will be re enabled unless you flash the kdz though. Anyways that's your best way to return to stock without using PC.

I don't remember very well; but I believe it's hard brick. When I was researching to root my phone y read that somewhere, maybe here. I'll try to find the info on my PC when I get home.
Update:
I found the link. The advice is in the FAQ. Not sure if that would happen in your case since you have a custom ROM. The danger is when downgrading from H83010D to H83010A.

Thanks bro. I totally believe it because past phones had exact issue.

Just for clarification, if you're on Android 7, you can not downgrade to Android 6 without first downgrading your bootloader as it won't flash correctly. Also just something to always keep in mind with LG phone's at least, is that LG uses a antirollback system. Never attempt to downgrade from a higher ARB # to a lower ARB #, if you're somehow successful it will lead to a hard brick. Every firmware that autoprime has posted states what antirollback number it is on, so always check that. On h830, every firmware since 10D has been ARB01, only 10A or earlier was ARB0. While lgup shouldn't allow you to flash (should error out), no reason to take that chance. Hopefully that helps clarify

Unable to flash recovery on 20J

So, I want to preface this by saying I've been searching on this forum for the past day and repeatedly tried several suggestions, but I could have always missed a few posts.
I was running the 30c that was posted here, so previously had TWRP and root, but something happened to my phone and I had to basically wipe it, but I ended up losing the OS (most likely my own fault). No matter what I tried, it would always reboot into recovery, so I read that flashing with the kdz would bring it back, which it did! I flashed the 20j KDZ and I was happy to get my phone working again. Except now, I couldn't root. Every time I did fastboot flash or boot, it would say ERROR (remote: command unknown). After scouring as much as I could, I've come to the conclusion that upgrading to Nougat basically patched and removed several fastboot commands, meaning even if I flash to any other ARBv2 version, I'm out of luck.
Are my findings correct or am I missing something here?
To any and all who respond to my post, thank you.

If you flashed Nougat unmodified .kdz then root is not available as you have lost the necessary commands. I was on an H901 v10 (T-Mobile) and took the OTA upgrade to Nougat and was not able to get root for the same reason.

Hey Stransky, thanks for replying.
No, I was on the modified Nougat that was posted here (everything was pretty much stock except for recovery) but eventually reflashed stock 20J .kdz as I remember that was rootable. I can still get into fastboot and whatnot, just can't flash or boot into TWRP from it.

Have you tried booting into TWRP holding the volume down button and pressing the power button and releasing it when the LG screen appears and then quickly pressing it again and follow the instructions to reset which will then take you into TWRP if it is still there.

No Download Mode - Only Fastboot

Hi,
I tried to upgrade my US998 from Oreo to Pie using LGUP patched. The upgrade process went well until the phone restarted and have this error message:
"Your device has failed a routine safety check and will not boot..."
I did try using LG Bridge to fix = not working
I did try fastboot boot laf.img (using extracted laf from H93031a_00_OPEN_EU_OP_1105) not working.
Any other solution?
Thanks
This Post got recommended to me. I am a Samsung user so my answer will probably be very stupid.
If you have fastboot, why don't you flash a recovery and a custom rom? Ik stupid but it's the only thing that comes to my mind since i don't have a LG phone lol

Is that "Download mode" the same as the Samsung one? How do you NORMALLY access it?

I'm not sure. Normally I access download mode using volume up and power button. The download mode was there for a sec and then the screen back to
"Your device has failed a routine safety check and will not boot..."
again.
Ah ok so now I understand.
But why don't you unlock your bootloader then if fastboot works? Do you know for sure that TWRP doesn't work?
I really want to help but I don't have a LG phone

EDIT: The LG Bootloader unlocking page is "under construction". Guess you have to bring your phone to LG for them to fix this...

Unfortunately my LG V30 is US region. The official bootloader site not support my phone. Thanks for your info anyway
I'm not sure why a Samsung user was recommended this post. And no offense to the Samsung user, but the process for unlocking, etc is VERY different for Samsung than it is for LG... so I recommend not worrying about that. Believe me, I know, because I'm researching switching to a Samsung in the future, and the process is very different!
That being said, the best resource here is the WTF thread with the post by ChazzMatt. That post has everything you need in one place.
jacoozie, the error you're getting indicates that you had a non-stock phone when you flashed the KDZ on an unlocked phone. For this reason, it's no surprise you got this error - the phone must be COMPLETELY STOCK for a stock KDZ flash. I'm guessing you had TWRP or something else installed, which is causing this problem. Once you unlock, you cannot just flash things willy nilly... and generally you don't flash with KDZ unless you're trying to change models (aka Frankenstein) or on the way to a custom ROM.
It sounds like you've done some unlocking rooting... if so, I recommend you start over with the WTF thread, read it VERY CAREFULLY and ENTIRELY and then reflash as instructed there. I'm guessing you may need to go back to KDZ Nougat and then work your way forward. If you have questions, ask in that thread... but you shouldn't have any questions as the thread is VERY complete (been updated all the time with very detailed information, so everything is in there).

Thanks for the reply.
I didnt install TWRP or any recovery tools to my phone. My phone bootloader still locked thou.
I have read the WTF thread but the problem is I cant get into my Download mode.
Ok, what steps are you using to try to get into download mode? Presumably turning off the phone, then holding the volume up button and plugging in the USB cable (other end already connected to a Windows computer), correct? If that doesn't work, can you try other USB cables? Sometimes a bad cable could prevent the phone from going into download mode.
