[Q] Internal Storage and System apps - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Every Android device come with pre-installed system apps such as Youtube, Email, etc. How these apps are updated? For the user installed apps, updating will simply replace the old version, but the system apps are in different story. Will there are two copies for the system apps? One for the old version and the other for the new version?
If I uninstall some of the system apps (in a rooted device with the help of some app) that I do not needed, will the space occupied by the system apps allocated back to me for personal use?

When you update a system app then update app stored in data partition. System app in factory version remain same in system partition.
If you uninstall system app then it will free up your system partition. But you can not use for store other data to system partition like internal storage.
You can convert user app to system app.

This means that there are two copies of the apps, and I always launch the copy in the data partition?

Generally you want to back up apps and system data if you want to keep things like wireless setup, etc. When you restore though, do not restore system apps, and restore your users apps with data, and the system data you would like to have, i.e. wireless settings.
I, for one, only backup user apps and data.
And I will support the dev if I feel the app is outstanding, which TB is in every way!

[Q] Converting apps to system apps

There is this function in TB which moves the app to system partition.
If I'm using a script that moves apps to sd, it should make converted apps run faster.
The question is whether app converted in such way can still be updated automatically as usual?

[Q] How do I move apps from /mnt/asec to /data/app ??

Is there an application that can move installed apps from the /mnt/asec folder to the /data/app folder?? Or is there an easy way to do it?? I would like all my apps to be placed in the /data/app folder so I can do a quick backup and restore when flashing a new rom. Thanks!
For anyone interested, I found Paul O'Brien's Xposed module which disables Play Store encryption, here:
http://www.modaco.com/topic/361776-xmod-disable-play-store-encryption-mntasec/
And I can confirm that this works exactly as expected on the Nexus 4!
So now I'm in the process of reinstalling my paid apps to /data/app, which enables me to take a complete backup of my data partition and restore it to any freshly installed ROM, paid apps included! :good:

I've always used Android Tuner (my own app) to move apps around, and I do move my paid apps from /mnt/asec back to /data, never had issues doing so. AT backs-up the app (and its data) before reinstalling (and restoring) it to internal memory.

May I ask which app you use to do backup/restore? Because just did a test with 3 apps installed in /mnt/asec and backing-it up was ok, all data were also backed-up. Running 4.4 by the way, and also tried on all previous versions in the past, never noticed any particular issue.
The only thing I experienced from time to time is trying to backup a running app having not yet updated its data when I do a backup.

The backup I'm referring to is not app backup (as per Titanium or ROM Toolbox), but a partition backup with CWM or TWRP recovery - this is where the complete data backup is relevant. To be honest, I haven't tested taking an entire data backup without the play store encryption, but anyway, I prefer to have all my apps in data/app and not mnt/asec

[Q] TiBu and system apps/data

Hello gang,
I'm new to the S4, I used to have and Incredible 2 and I have some questions about using TiBu to backup system apps and data. It seemed like on the S4 there are way more system apps and data than on the Inc 2. According to Tibu there are currently 287 entries (on my phone) that can be backed up by running Backup all system data. Some are apps like Gmail and Amazon and most are other Samsung/Android entries. So my question is, how do you handle backing up system data? Do you use labels, do you just back up everything, something else? Also, do the Redo backups for modified data and Redo backups for newer app versions apply to system apps and data too (I know this is strickly a TiBu question).
Thanks. :good:

When you uninstall an app from Settings ====> Apps, all traces of app from /data, .android_secure, /sdcard/Android are erased.
Only thing that is left is folder created by app IN SDCARD. (example sdcard/Tasker) You need to delete such folders manually. I think this a security feature so things like WhatsApp media are not deleted when you uninstall it.
Press Thanks if helped.
