Hi guys im planning to buy this phone, but does it has an unlocked bootloader? How good is developer support for this cellphone?
the bootloader is locked and with that you cannot load a fully working custom kernel thus there are not many dev involved.
Hope something improves in future...
Until then I statisfy my rom flashing sickness with my HD2
Would you recommend me buying this phone ? Or an xperia play?

I recommend you the razr. Its a good phone overall especially the build quality.
No match with the play unless you are a heavy gamer.
I think you will find a positive answer for either device within its own forum.
So grain of salt aside, I like the Razr, but from a slightly technical person that likes to experiment with things, It was fun to flash a couple ROM's when I first got it and settled on one. After finding Eclipse thats what I've stuck to permanently. Its fast, its compact, and most importantly everything just works out of the box. So really, no more fun experimenting...
If you want to take your chances on some ICS leak that you may never be able to flash from in the future, or an ICS build over the old kernal with things not working or some things kinda working. I dunno... "fun"?
With no unlocked BL its seems that the development for this phone is somewhat castrated. Don't get me wrong, out of the many phones I tried, this one was the nicest as far as speed, screen, and touch/feel. Phone-wise anyway its the better. Development... not so much. We are all in here keeping our fingers crossed for one of two things... 1) Kholk gets his BL bypass working to where someone actually wants to develop for it but outlook not-so-good on that one, or 2) Motorola actually keeps their word for once and eventually gives us a BL unlock. (again "outlook not-so-good")
I just wish there were more fun things to do with our Razr like there are for other phones, Xperia Play included since you can unlock the BL with that, and just glancing in the development section of their forum can attest to that.
All that aside, as a Razr owner, I can recommend it as a very nice, advanced featured, smartphone that does everything I could ever dream of. heh
Of course we can use custom kernels. Just a short time remaining until the new kernel source will be released, then kexec will work with both cores and fully working custom roms will become available.

Please join me in this great cause for further development of of our beloved BEAST! Everyone knows there's a need for better development for this overlooked and underrated device.
DooMLoRD, as you know, is a senior member and one of THE TOP XPERIA Developers so wouldn't it be a great idea since the Sony Xperia Ultra GPe Edition has been discounted by $200 to get ONE in his hands? Since the price is $449.00 let's all get together to chip in and send him one.
He's halfway there and I'll donate the fastest shipping possible to get it to him if we achieve the remaining $250 or so (there should be taxes added to the total) just so we could have his Kernels, Mods, Fixes or whatever!
Everyone knows how hard it is to develop for a device you don't even have in your hands. But DooMLoRD does this time and again - I know this for a fact. Let's give him what he needs for the good of ALL of us who use these forums.
Won't you join in this effort to help this great well known developer who is also a WONDERFUL GUY - let's get this device in his hands as fast as possible! Take a moment and just read through some of these posts and you'll see he's presenting incredible work without thus device in his hands. How cool of him to do that!
So the goal is $250 in addition to the taxes. Anyone can P.M. me with any thoughts, suggestions, questions, or even complaints for that matter. You can contact DooMLoRD or go to his XDA page to find out how to donate to him.
Update:
LordManhattan your point is well taken as I'm sure you know better than I. But by having the Xperia Z Ultra or the Z Ultra GPe he can still help us all one way or another. I think that's already been proven.
Just sayin'...
Could a Mod please move this to the Sony Xperia Z Ultra Development Forum. I'm sorry I made a boo boo!

I agree. I don't have the GPe version, but I've waited for a GPe+Sony compatibility for ages. Why isn't it happening?! The GPe Ultra got released back in December (?) and it's still completely dead.
Sure, the Ultra is a niche device and the Ultra GPe is even more niche, so that's understandable, but we have some great devs around here including some promising kernel devs too, so I guess those two together could solve it? Or? That's the only barrier left around here. Do you guys know what the Galaxy S4 (bootloader) bounty is? It's over $4,000! Do you know how high the ROOT bounty, yes ROOT bounty for the S5 is? Over $10,000! Moto X? $1200.
We are ****ing lucky if I dare say. OP, I understand what you're trying to do and we do have a lot of custom ROMs around here, but people with the Xperia version are pretty happy right now, BUT our last venture is the GPe. If we can get a Sony ROM over to an Xperia phone, then we'll be done. We'll actually be done, while other people on Samsung and what not will be crying.
Point: We're incredible lucky. We'll want Android 4.5/5 in june/july (after I/O). What do we do when the time comes? Wait a couple of weeks. We'll get the GPe version to back us up! All we need is one single dev that knows his **** and completes it.

At OP: At the moment we can easily port @DooMLoRD's work but it would be nice for him to support our device
@LordManhattan If the script I have just been working on works for Custom ROMs I dont think it will be too much to get custom Sony ROMs working on the GPe

Flashing a FTF seems to brick the GPe. If I remember right they has slightly different partition layout or was it bootloader?

Dat be tru
if you flash a non _gpe ROM to the GPe some users have reported that it wont boot, doing it the other way around, the only way I can test, it will boot but baseband is missing. The GPe seems to chuck *everything* into /system/etc/firmware/ where the ZU doesn't. The GPe also includes the same blobs as the ZU as well.
I have a update.zip that should get the radio working if a GPe user wants to test it out (see separate thread if you do). If it doesn't want to boot then it will need a little more work...

just create a update.zip with all the files from /system/etc/firmware from original ZU GPe KitKat and flash it over the ZU Sony firmware system

that is what I've done, just no GPe owners have piped up yet that they want to test it. I was hoping that the same method would work for stock Sony as well. Just create a zip like I have done in the past and include the firmware dir from the GPe dump.

ALL Questions Should Finally Be Put To Rest
For the record, as many of you now know, DooMLoRD is THE Lord for a damn good reason. Check out his Xperia Download page (http://doomlord.xperia-files.com) and see for yourselves he's already proven just how capable of a developer he already is. Plus since Sony has matched Google' pricing either device could easily be in his hands by the end of this month. C'mon people we've all used his work at some point since the X10 and he clearly stated he'd ..."be interested I'm developing for either of these devices!.
How hard could it be to muster up another 14 members (minimum) to donate at least $20? In the end we'd be GUARANTEED a Bona fide Z Ultra Developer who would instantly improve development for our devices. Something that has been lacking since it's release.
Thank you ADFURGERSON for stepping up to the plate and donating!
I pledge 20 minimum more if needed Ieft note 3 for this device I crave development!!

Bump 4 my Bro DooMLoRD!
Hey guys, I recently got the xperia Z2 over the HTC One M8 to test out before I commit to buying it and having looked on XDA, I can't help but get feeling his phone won't have a great ammount of ROM support from most developers, at least not for a while. Am I wrong in thinking so? I also read somewhere that rooting or unlocking triggers some DRM stuff and things like x-reality stop working. Is this true? If so, what's the point? I though Sony was trying to be more developer friendly? If anyone could answer some of these questions I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm not asking for an ETA on ROMs just that I don't see a massive Sony market in the US and so I feel like it will be lacking in terms of choice. If that is the case and especially if i cannot convert to a GPE equvialent or something then at this point would the HTC one M8 be a better choice?
I also got the Z2 because i liked the phone way better then S5 and M8 but am also worried about developer support. I also got Z which now has quit some support but still not as much as i was used to have on my HTC's.
Phone had a lot of dificulties at launch, late release and stuff, its not even worldwide available yet, but yeah, development wont be as active as s5 or m8, but i prefer quality over quantity, so what if s5 has 10 exactly same roms with different name, you will get all major roms since its one of the currently big 3 phones.

You're wrong, I will soon build a rom for the Xperia Z2
Yeah exactly. I am more worried about the DRM stuff and the fact that I do like stock android so I may want to convert to GPE; in your opinion, is the ROM scene for the M8 worth swapping this phone for?
Thanks niaboc! but do you truthfully think I should wait and do you think there will be a good enough amount of mods etc? Also what about the DRM stuff?

This is great news! I've been missing your Existenz Roms from my Z!
No argument there, the phone did have launch issues definitely. I understand your quality over quantity issue but 3 ROMs I need without fail are PA, Slimkat and a Google play edition; especially the GPE. Do you think that will happen truthfully? On the M8 it already has and its a matter of flashing it now really. I feel like if I choose the Z2 and wait and the experience isn't good then I may be disappointed quite a lot no matter how great the phone is and I'm worried about that seeing as it is an expensive investment!
Drm seems to be a problem of past. I unlocked bootloader, lost drm keys, and only thing i lost is music and video unlimitted service, which i wasnt using anyways. Its your choice, we cannot see future and tell how many roms gonna be here compared to m8, but im sure its gonna be plenty for my needs. I bought z2 and m8, and they both are briliant, but as you can see im using z2 now, while my father got m8. Only real advantage in m8 for me was feeling you get holding it, that shape is amazingly comfortable.

Hmm. You make a good point and I will definitely take that into account. Others are reporting loss of x-reality and features like that which I don't want to be restricted on if I root and unlock my boot loader. As for the M8 you're right it does have an incredible body but the Z2 in white looks so amazing!
Fair enough! I have this phone till the 26th so if it looks good by then, I may keep it! The DRM stuff, I dunno I'll have to deal with it I guess! Thanks!
Hey people,
I already read most of the Threads in this subforum but didnt find any answer that'd really clear things up.
Being streight forward: how good are chances seeing Custom Roms coming to the Z5 Compact? Would be a main reason to consider for me when buying this Device.
Thanks in advance.
Best regarts!
That's hard to tell. I was really disappointed with the amount of development for the Z3, but never really cared because it had an official CyanogenMod release.
bump on this topic! i would like to know this aswell. i have been searching for a good latest rom/firmware for my z5c. haven't found any yet, and as i can see, it is very hard to obtain one

Kryptonian is alright. Its still on its first release, so its a bit buggy as of now. I would recommend it over Xpower though, as long as you don't mind Team Kryptonian's branding in place of the Android logo everywhere.

I'm also looking forward to some custom ROMs but for now nothing catches my eye... I thought the Z5C was going to get very good aftermarket support since Z1C and Z3C had one, I don't know why things happened the way they did
I am running on cm 2 days now and not had an issue since
So it's been 11 days since the Oreo update
Device seems stable to me, with kernel and source released,
can we at least have developers now?
I'm just dying to make use of my purchased apps that can only be used if rooted, honestly this device is just okay at the price I got it. but no development makes it worst decision of my life,
I mean there's better development for Sony Xperia M the device released in 2013, which does not even have enough internal storage to handle the new roms with basic apps, are trimmed, and our device, which performs even faster that that, is better than Xperia ZL, still it's not getting attention from devs,
Not complaining, but still... expecting
