Android Media Scanner Alternatives - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

To start, I'm on a rooted LGG3 running AICP with Android 7.1.1.
I recently got a 64gb very high speed rated SanDisk card for pretty cheap. I filled it to about 54gb.
Now my media players are being very picky. After boot they show as empty and take a long amount of time to rescan because the Media Scanner app seems to try to update its storage every time the phone reboots. It takes about 20 minutes and its storage space crawls from 0 to 51 MB, at which point everything works properly.
Currently I'm using VLC since it keeps its own media cache and is therefore the only reliable media player, but it doesn't search for artist and album art like blackplayer does.
Is there an alternative to the media scanner app that isn't so finicky? All I could find is an XPOSED module but android 7 doesn't have XPOSED yet.
Perhaps a way to freeze the media scanner so it doesn't scan for new media ever unless you tell it to? Or even another music player that keeps its own cache?
Help appreciated, thanks a lot.

Music players with their own media scanners and db:
1. PlayerPro ($)
2. Foobar200 ($0)
3. Poweramp ($)
4. Neutron Music Player ($) Odd UI.
The above does not affect the Android media scanner, which will run on its own, but you can kill it, I suppose. I am out of my depth here.

Music player doesn't update song list (Android 2.1)

Hey guys I need some help. None of my music players (mediascape, stock android music player, or winamp) doesn't display the updated list of songs. After I've deleted some old songs and put in new ones, it still displays the old songs.
what method are you using to put music on your phone? usually after the sd card is remounted the phone will know to rescan for music. i could be wrong here but i think most players use the same service for record keeping on music. so thats why nothing updates. if you restart your phone it should rescan. alternatively you could look up "rescan media" on the market as there are a few apps there to force a rescan.
i did a search and several other people are facing the same issue and is mainly the android OS that has this bug. it seems that it is still a bug that hasn't been addressed yet by Google according to the software developer who made Meridian. it has something to do with MediaScannerService. under settings, applications, manage applications, MediaScannerService comes up as restarting. no matter what i do whether i take out the battery, mount/unmount the sd card, it still shows up as restarting. and it stays like that indefinitely.
you're right, i found out that all the apps share the same filesystem update function and that's why the apps don't have their own individual 'update library' function. apparently a full reflash and sd card format will fix it... ughh... (>_<)
Mine worst. My mediascape cant even scan any songs. I use other player, PowerAmp Player and it only can play songs from folders and can't load songs to library.

[Q] Music on 16GB SDCard

I was exploring the possibility of using the GTab as a music player in my car. While trying this out, I discovered that when the music (WMAs) is on a 16GB (Class 2) card, GTab will not find the music. The music, however, is there and I can find and play the tracks via iFilemanger or Sniffer but usually will show as Unknown Artist/Album.
When those same music tracks are placed on a 4GB Card, GTab finds them just find and all details show in the music player. For S&Gs I ripped two albums to MP3 and loaded them onto the 16GB card, GTab finds them with no problem.
I have tried WinAmp, Zimly and the basic stock music player. Currently running TNT Lite 4.2.5.
Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated.
Thanks
DH
Have you tried poweramp?
You change from library to file
Two day trial but i bought it sooner

I havent tried that but I suspect depending on how much music you have, that the scanner isn't finding the music or isn't done scanning when you attempt to play it. The scanning process seems to be universal somehow and most players depend on it. Maybe it builds a temporary database of some sort? No clue - devs would maybe know that.
I use several apps, Doubletwist, Mixzing and Winamp in addition to the Music player and of them all, only Doubletwist seems to work independently of the scanner and always sees and plays the music. There are times when the others will see but can't play anything.
Also, it's not so great a device for playing music long term as after a while for some reason you get some "time jumps" in music. Thats how I refer to it because it's definitely not skipping. It will jump to the previous song, then back to the one currently playing, then to the next, then all the way back to the one it started time jumping on. It does this usually when I suspect there's some clocking down going on inside. Never when I just start the music or soon after....generally hours later.
Good Luck.
Do you have a .nomedia file somewhere in the root of your 16gb card or in your music directory? It might be causing the gtab to skip the scan of your card. Not having the .nomedia file though will erase any videos on your card so i would suggest placing the .nomedia file in your video directory but keep it out of your music folder.
I was hoping to do something similar and use the gtab as a car music player and have a 500 GB portable drive plugged in to it to give me something similar to the Archos 5 internet tablet for music playback but I can't seem to find a good way to do this
I have never had good results with wma files. I suggest converting them to mp3. Mixing, stock, cubed, they always played them weird and had missing tags and data when viewed. Convert to native mp3 support and save yourself tons at hassle.
Oh and +1 for power amp. The full mixing board and pre amp along with the ability to save settings and apply settings to specific songs and albums is mind blowing. The album art downloader is sweet too. Realy hard to go back to any other player. They had my money within 2days of the trial period.

Thanks for the lead on PowerAmp, nice app and found the music right away. Interestingly, after adding nearly 8 gigs of music to the card, the libaray found all of the tracks.

BINGO!
Thank you.
Putting the .nomedia folder into a folder called Video cured my scan issues on the 16gb SD card.
I never had a problem with either of the VEGANtab versions, when I reverted back to Stock 4349 I had trouble.

[Q] Album Art/Artwork/Cover

hi there..
I embedded all album arts into the mp3s in my pc using mp3tag... all working in my pc...
so i copied all the mp3s into my sensation XE.. all the album art is not displaying in the stock music player like it shows in the pc..
i tried viewing all the mp3s in my phone using another pc, all the album art is there.. but the phone is not displaying.. any help?
I'm gonna bump this one.
I have the exact same problem. I've used hours upon hours on sorting my music through mp3tag, giving them new names, making new folders, finding and embedding artwork in tags, and so on. And when I decided to throw it all on my Desire S, it almost didn't show any artwork at all! I shows like 1 percent or so, the rest is just blank.
Now, I know the phone can show it, cause a lot of the music has been on the phone before and showed artwork. BUT.. the problem was it didn't show all artwork (only around 90 percent or so), so I decided to transfer all my music onto my 64gb mincro-sd card once again (have around 50gb of music), only this time having sorted it all through said mp3tag.
I've used both the stock HTC music player, Winamp, Doubletwist, PowerAmp and others, but noone seems to be able to load all of the artwork. It propably has something to do with the android media scanner, but I have no idea how or why, everything I've tried seems to fail: Clearing the media scanner cache, restarting the phone etc. Maybe it's due to some spacial limitation on 'new scannable media' in incoming media scans on startup, who knows.
All the artwork shows up beautifully in Winamp on my computer, but not on my Android. And it pisses me off, as I'm actually quite fond of the whole Android experience. But as a music lover it's just soooo annoying that it's so terrible at handling music and related artwork.
I could of course use e.g. PowerAmp to fill out missing artwork, but it'll propably only work for the app itself, and I have too many albums to be arsed to do it all over again. As said, I already did use so much time on embedding artwork to id3v2.3 tags, and I just don't understand why the phone can't load those tags and related artwork without problems.
Anyone tried the same? Something similar? Other thoughts?
I use Android 2.3.5 btw.
SAME HERE
BUMP! as well!!!
owning a droid razr here and i have the similar problem as well... BUT I CAN SEE MY ALBUM ART AT THE LOCK SCREEN
other apps such as doubletwist etc are able to show my album art but the STOCK music player doesnt even show a SINGLE album art...
i classify all my song in their albums like a;ways and tag them from mp3tag...
100% sure they are there but they cant seem to show up on the app
Hope ics update will come earlier and fix this???
BTW
my phone had successfully shown the album art the first time i uploaded them into my internal storage but now it cant seem to work as before any more
after syncing them to my 16gb sandisk microsdhc....
now syncing it to my interal storage doesnt work as well...
Bump. Even downloading using album art grabber, and setting it to overwrite the default artwork, it doesnt stick. Plus, everytime i restart, all my artwork needs reaaplying, everytime i copy/to from the card, the artwork messes up, and my playlists vanish. Album artwork has already been pre-embedded, but winamp wipes it on transfer, forcing me to use album artwork grabber app. Is there ANY way to make these changes stick?

[Q] Asus Transformer Prime Music Issue

Hi XDA users
im having an issue where the music i store inside the microsd is not scanned and played by google music player preinstalled in the tablet. Is there any way around this? only the music stored in the internal memory of the tablet is scanned and played. please help me with this! thank you! =)
I can't even get that. It doesn't find any of my music.
and the settings are a joke. there are no options to select, just shows help, the license and version number.
Are there any good (free) music player programs out there.
Cube (³) is pretty nice, try that. Some minor issues with the playlists still occur, but the widgets are nice and the player itself has some neat features.

I have the same issue. I have music stored on my SD card and in the cloud, but when I load up the Google player it seems to just display what is in the cloud and has very limited capabilities.

[Q] HELP! VLC for Android locking up - EE Kestrel (Huawei G535)

Hey, I am having trouble with VLC for Android on my EE Kestrel (Huawei G535), I was fed up with Google Play music, it was driving me crazy to be frank, so I have started using VLC as my main music player and so far it seems to be doing a wonderful job, nice UI, full of features, and it doesn't seem to lose 20gb of music like Play Music does, however that is also where the problem lies, the amount of music I have, over 25gb of it, stuck on a class 10 32gb Micro SD card. Whenever I slide from the left in VLC and enter the 'Audio' view, VLC seems to lock up for as much as half a minute and it is really starting to bug me, other than this I love the player and would happily use it but I am afraid I may have to find another player if I cannot get this issue solved, when I enter the 'Artists' tab VLC locks up for a while, when it frees up again the scrolling and everything is really smooth, I can select an artist, it'll show all of their albums no trouble, entering the 'Now Playing' bit works fine too, select a song, it plays, tap the bottom bar and it shows you what is playing along with some pretty panning album artwork, very nice! However when I tap the back button to go back to the 'Artists'/'Albums'/'Songs' view it locks up again, I am not sure if this is an issue with VLC or if it is just the sheer amount of music I have, I'm pretty sure it isn't my device because it used to do it on my tablet too if I had a 32gb card in (different memory card so it isn't that either), one thing I must give to Play Music is that it always seems to load all of my music almost instantly, why does VLC take so long, please help, any solutions would be greatly appreciated. I have attached a screenshot, as you can see it has locked up as the side pane is closing
Thanks in advance!
