[Q] Expect to be able to root the Tab 4 ? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm getting itchy for a new tablet. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 looks uninteresting, especially for the price. Plus, Samsung is getting more difficult to root. The forthcoming Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus is interesting, especially for the price. Although I'd have to wait until May.
The real question, is it likely that I'll be able to root the Tab 4? I'm not looking for a guarantee, just an opinion. I've never had a Lenovo android device, so I don't know how they tend to treat this question.

Although, basically every device is Rootable. Lenovo usually keeps their custom version of Android close to stock, so it shouldn't have any problems.

Still no root available?
Hi, I got my Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus today and it appears there is still no root instruction available. I tried Framaroot and KingRoot but both failed miserably. Towelroot did not even install - but I believe that one works on older Android versions only anyway.
All instructions on the Web are obviously fake and even on the Lenovo board there is nothing usable about the Tab 4...
I believe the Tab 4 is already out since a couple of month now.
Is it really possible that nobody has rooted it so far?
Does somebody here know how to root that tablet?

lenovo Tab 4 8" is a fair Tab. However browser is freezing up on the regular.

Lenovo Tab 4 8" is not a adult tablet. However the browser is freezing up on the regular already. Hoping to find a root for the device soon.

The tablet hasn't been released everywhere yet (including the US) so perhaps when it does, there will be a lot of people attempting to find a way to root.

No clue if the information is correct, but that link
tabletmonkeys.com/lenovo-tab-4-10-android-7-1-tablet
says it has been released more than one month ago in the US.

There is no rooting method available for Lenovo tab 4 10 plus. But you can try it with one click root applications available.

None of them works with the Tab 4.

OK, thanks for the clarification! I didn't expect that they release the non-plus and the plus separated... Do you have up to date information when the plus release in the US is planned?

for now, I have tried all the root method none of them working. kingo. iroot. have been google all day.
I am seeking for the method as well, please help.

For Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus and Lenovo Tab 4 8 Plus root is possible by unlocking bootloader, booting (not flahsing) TWRP and flashing SuperSU or Magisk. I made a howto in a german forum. I think matshias (who build TWRP for both devices) make a howto on xda in the near future.

1. You don't need a unlock code from Lenvo. The command fastboot oem unlock-go work without a code.
2. It exists TWRP for the Tablet (I linked it in my howto). The only thing is, better not to flash it, only boot it.
3. see 2.

Do you know if this work on the standard Lenovo Tab 4 8" ( Not the Plus) ?

No, only for the Plus versions. Maybe matshias build sometimes a version for the non Plus.

Here is TWRP for the Plus version: https://forum.xda-developers.com/thinkpad-tablet/general/twrp-root-tab-4-plus-tb-x704l-f-tb-t3664407

Here are experimental TWRP builds for Tab 4 8/10. Let me know if they work.

Would rooting it possibly fix the sdcard issues ( I have a non plus tab)
If you search the Lenovo forums you'll see it mentioned there( mine is doing it also)

hmmm

that means , A2017U (USA) and A2017 (Chinese) will get Nougat either this month or the next (December).
I can't say that I'm not a little bit disappointed by hearing January 2017. Being advertised as the first Daydream 'ready' phone, I had my hopes up for an upgrade closer to the Daydream-platform launch today..

If you didn't know Daydream requires Nougat and the phone initially ships with Marshmallow, I can see how that could be interpreted. I just knew it meant it will get Nougat eventually. The chipset is what is important. Older Qualcomm devices cannot support Daydream because they cannot meet recommended performance requirements.
Daydream actually required 7.1 version IMO.
And since 7.1 released couple of weeks ego that's mean
It needs at least 2 months preparation until OEM implement a newer version of Android.
So If US or Chinese version receive it within November/December it will be version 7 and that's not good sign/news at all.
So everyone hope ZTE bring 7.1 version(and NOT 7 i repeat) and doesn't matter who will get it first IMO.
It will be HUGE MISTAKE if ZTE not bring 7.1.

Indeed, let's hope they are skipping 7 and are putting all effort in a good working 7.1.
On official german Facebook page they say Daydream will be supported with Nougat update in January.

As long as ZTE involved to improve it via software.
But until now all Chinese haven't shown any skills for better software processing as for the camera performance.
Even Huawei lacking against top of the top Korean manufacturers despite being involved Leica.

There is a possibility we will see another camera improvement if zte implement camera2api in the nougat update, however i doubt this because the camera2api has been available since lollipop which has been around for years. On the bright side however they said they might add raw support which you need the camera2api for (unless they want to do a lot of coding themselves). So there is a possibility the camera might get better .

Tricking Nexus 6p into thinking its a Nexus 6

Recently a company called Dexcom released their long anticipated Android App for their latest Constant Glucose Monitor. It is not available around the globe, only in Europe currently. I have gotten a hold of the APK, and installed it. Issue is the app only supports certain android phones. One of the devices is the Nexus 6. I have heard you can "trick" your phone into thinking its the Pixel and Pixel XL. Is there anyway to do the same with my Nexus 6p? I would like to "trick" it into thinking its a Nexus 6.
Supported Devices are: Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung Galaxy S6, Samsung Galaxy S7, Samsung Galaxy Note 5, LG G4, LG G5, Nexus 6
Android 5.0, 5.1.0, 5.1.1, 6.0.0 (LG 4 and Nexus 6 only), 6.0.1 (LG 5, Nexus 6, Samsung Note 5, Samsung S5, S6, and S7 only), 7.0.0 (Nexus 6 only)
http://dexcom.com/ous-compatibility-page
Try editing the build.prop where it says nexus 6p. Im not sure what line it is but thats what folks are doing to get Google assistant to think our phones are pixels.
That was exactly my thought. Just wasn't sure if it would work the other way around.
If you do this, is any functionality lost or broken?

Download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.apps.build.prop.editor search for: "ro.product.model" and change it from "Nexus 6P" to "Nexus 6", reboot, enjoy. (You need root access)

I am trying to do this without rooting my device since that will require a complete wipe.
I followed a post where they pulled the build.prop and then pushed a new one back. I kept getting an error about it being a read only system. Thoughts?

You can't edit the build.prop file without root. It's a system file and without root that is no bueno.
I edited the Build.Prop file and it still won't let me run the Dexcom G5 app. FFFFFFFF

How does an app check to see if it's on a supported hardware list?
I am looking for the same thing for my brother. He has a Galaxy s8 and I found the app, installed it but it says it's not compatible.

SUGGESTION: Best cheap android phone with custom rom and working camera+radios

Hi All,
I'm an engineer looking to upgrade a product which uses an old Altel smartphone. I'm experienced in Unlocking and flashing. I have already done a search, but now in 2020, there may be new info.
Looking for suggestions for the best CHEAP android phone which has good custom ROM support for android 7+ (ish).
I need to use the back camera, and connect via wifi, bluetooth, or Cellular Data. It will be tested in the US, but may benefit from support for many globally common 3g and 4g bands.
One last thing. Would love to find something I can still buy a few dozen of NEW, or at least MFG REFURB.
Can anyone suggest suitable phones? So far, been considering late nexus line and early pixel line, knowing they're flash unlockable.
Thank you for reading! Apologies if I hit the wrong section of the forum.

There are no *NEW* cheap phones that have custom ROM support unfortunately. But used phone are an option : ) If you want official ROM support (Even to this day!), you can get a Samsung Galaxy S4 for 50$, an S5, Note 3 (Android 9 - 10 support!).
If you want a used phone at 100-150$, you can get a A5 2017, Google Pixel 1, Nexus 6 (Don't buy the 6p)
If you want to get a Brand new phone: Moto G7 and G6 Plus (200-250$). (Theese phones have a more complicated process of modding)
You can check the Lineage OS download Page here: https://download.lineageos.org/ Theese are all of the supported devices.
If you don't want to have any difficulties, you can get a Samsung but be careful with the variants! Get the international or Canadian variant because if you get a US variant, there are no methods of unlocking the device (except for the S5 and less) You can also get the Google Pixel, but do not buy the US variant. Same for the nexus devices...
Your knowledge and help are much appreciated.
Can you offer advice on USB OTG Compatibility with various phones on Lineage? I've had mixed results in the past with stock ROMs.

Probably almost all phone supported by lineage have OTG. Don't worry about that.

I have 2 Samsung Galaxy S3 ( circa 2012 ) and while they are far from new, they are great phones to play around with.
I am far from experienced, but I have enjoyed flashing Custom ROM's , from CyanogenMod, thru various versions of Lineage, and now CrDroid. The newest O/S that I flashed is CrDroid 3.8.9 ( based on Android 7.1.2 - I think! ). Runs great. Stable. Long battery life. Ran ( 'right out of the box' ) without any need to install Gapps.
The nice thing is the Samsung Galaxy S3 is so darn abundant. Seems that everybody has one collecting dust in a drawer. And that means they are cheap ( as in give it away ). All the Samsung Galaxy S3 came with unlocked bootloader ( I think that is the term ) except for the Verizon model.
Icing on the cake is, a fellow from Montreal, alexenferman, is the genious authour of the CrDroid Custom ROM.
