Strange mode on On5 S550TL. Can anyone explain? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I was messing around with a Galaxy On5 that Straight Talk had sent me for free. I was rooting it and along my journey I found myself in a very strange mode that I would like to figure out how to return to. The phone booted up with some arrows along the bottom, or gears and said Factory something. It was some strange developer test mode or, something along those lines. It was a weird home screen with blue(I think) squares and abbreviations in them. There was a long stretched green battery bar at the top with segments. There was also some strange applications, but notably, and the reason I want to get back into this, there was what I believe to be the default AM/FM radio app. This app was different from the ones you find by 3rd parties, it had an older appearance and did not require anything to be plugged into the phone jack to work. It also worked quite well compared to other radio apps. There were a few other test type features like vibrate and what not. This was not safe mode, as it almost looked like a completely different operating system. Is there anyone who can give me any insight as to what the heck this was? I have tried Googling all kinds of things to try finding something similar but nothing at all, just the typical Recovery and Download modes which I am already familiar with.

It will be very helpful If someone recognizes it.

Unfortunately I was unable to get a screenshot or picture when this happened.

How did you get back from.
Its surprising no one had found this "easter egg" before.

I think it happened when I flashed a rom. I can't remember I was messing with the darn phone for hours. I might try to replicate it though, haven't decided if I want to risk losing my root.

I figured out the mode is called Factory Binary and is triggered by flasing a firmware I found with odin in AP.

Edit, after hours of research, I realized it's not some 'secret' mode or anything, it's simply a factory testing software.
Too bad I couldn't pull the AM/FM app from it through, would really like to use it.

What triggered safe mode?

I can find plenty of info on how to force it into safe mode...or how to force it out of safe mode, but I'm looking to do neither.
I rebooted my phone today (because gmail wasn't syncing) and it started back up, to my surprise, in safe mode. It's weird b/c besides the sync everything was peachy.
I'd just like to know if there's any way to poll the rationale for it? Any log file I can cat? Any ADB command I can run? I'd just like to know what triggered it...this isn't a daily occurrence so it's not like I can just turn log-cat on and reboot. So I want to look at it now, while it's in safe mode.
Any help/tips are appreciated. All I can find in Google is how to get it in and out of safe mode.. NOTHING regarding diagnosis...
CM7...forgot which kernel. - JT's nightly #11 IIRC...I can get that info once I find his nightly kernel build page again, lmao.
Weird. Mine did yesterday too.
Haha, probably just a coincidence.
Either way, I'm REALLY surprised there's no info on this subject...
I mean either a flag set before shut-down or a status code on boot should stick it into safe mode...it shouldn't be hard to poll why. Something like that should definitely be either pollable from ADB, or in a log file some place. Seeing the lack of activity in this thread I decided it was probably a moot issue and rebooted into recovery, cleared cache and dalvik cache, restarted, it booted normally..
Though I'd still like to know for next time. Not only is this useful for people who actually give a ****, but it's useful to developers so they know of potential problems/bugs that exist inside ROM's. I'd be extremely surprised if there was **absolutely** no way to get it.

Help! Is this spyware??

I own a Verizon Galaxy s9+ and A galaxy tab s3. For the past few months I've noticed strange things going on with my phone and for at least 6 months on my tablet. Even factory resets don't solve this. I feel like I've googled everything to no avail. I started to think I was just crazy, until the other day I went to add a new account to my phone, an email account, and noticed something strange under accounts. I don't see any abnormal accounts under "accounts" in settings, but when I click "add account" there is a strange icon with no title next to it, like its hidden, and it has the green circle next to it like its been added, but I can't click or see what it is. Please help! I used to be super nosey on my bfs phone and now wondering if he's had something on mine for a while as well?? Thank you!!

Hi , I'm not sure but I think maybe some spy app is installed on your phone : / . Check if your phone has Official firmware .
To do that , follow this video instruction :

First time I see something like that ...

A factory reset will not help with many spying apps. Best you can do is send the device back unless have an unlocked bootloader. Then you can format all partitions and add apps back one by one.
To be honest. If something is like this is needed. Then move on. The relationship was already dead.

Peculiar Galaxy A50, should I be alarmed and dig further?

Hi, so I recently bought a Galaxy A50. When I brought it home and started looking around through the apps and settings, I noticed somethings that sort of alarmed me. I'm such an incredible noob about all these sorts of things I really don't know where to start. I'm hoping someone here has answers or can point me in the right direction. I just wanted to add right off the bat that the sales people who sold the phone to me came off a little fishy in the store, so I was a little uneasy from the get go. I can elaborate if anyone's interested. One peculiarity that underlies this entire post is that while in airplane, it seemed that some things were still able to open/access the web.
First off, I took the sim card tray out, and it didn't look like the stock sim card tray I saw in Youtube videos. For starters, there's a circle in the second sim slot that's not in the stock sim tray from the video. It also differs from the stock sim tray in the video in that there appears to be metallic bits at the end. As a precaution, I taped up the second slot and put it back in the phone. The odd thing is, when I took the sim card tray out again after putting the tape on, it there were indents/impressions in the tape right where the circle is. This is the video I used as a reference for a stock sim card tray: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RprD9McCwc4

Second, there's an app called SIM Card Manager that doesn't appear in the apps menu. It only appears if you search for it. The permissions it has seems pretty gnarly. But you can only see the full permissions if you click the 3-dots. At first blush, it has no permissions.
,
,
Third, the configapk app was also a little fishy. From what I gathered, configapk tells the phones which apps to autoinstall as part of the carrier/manufacturer setup. The weird thing is, when I click disable and confirm the disable, I get a weird popup asking if I want to replace the app with the factory version.
,
Does anyone have any idea what's going on? There's some other minor issues I won't waste your time with unless you think this is a sign of something. How do I dig deeper? Thank you all so much for any info you can offer.
EDIT: I figured out how to do images.

After getting more familiar with the site, this may not have been the best place to put this. Somehow I missed the giant Developers only warning in the title. I will ask a mod to move.

Trying to get one-handed mode working for a disabled co-worker.

Hello all. My coworker lost a portion of her dominant thumb recently. She's on a Pixel 2 on Android 11. Is there any way she can permanently make the phone's screen only take up a smaller portion of the whole display? So in essence, to have a decent chunk of padding on the left and top parts of the screen so she can always reach every part of the screen?
Her phone is rooted. We tried a few DPI and resolution changer apps, but none of them did what we want which is to have a bunch of padding to the left and from the top, permanently.
Preferably the setting would be permanent and not needed to be turned on, and will work across all apps. We tried the "One-Handed Mode" module for Gravitybox but it did nothing when applied.
Is there any way to accomplish this with an ADB command or some sort of app that we haven't found yet?
Anyone?
If downgrading to Android 10 is an option, overscan would work like a charm.
wm overscan [reset|LEFT,TOP,RIGHT,BOTTOM]
wm density [reset|DENSITY]
Google it...

Thanks for the snarky and useless reply; this video only makes the keyboard work with one hand, not the entire phone screen.

Sadly downgrading isn't an option but is there any way to do this in Android 11 if she's rooted?

I've been searching for over a week and the 5 different one-hand mode apps I've used haven't worked, but thanks for being a total pretentious dickhead to someone trying to help out a disabled fellow human being!

Sorry to hear about "her" power tool incident.

Short of a prosthetic or transplant, adaptation is the only alternative and all the former have their limits.
There's this on the Note's... it's in the firmware, not an app. whatever...

Yes which is why I specifically asked if it can be done on a Pixel phone that is rooted.

Help reinstalling edge panels

I previously deleted edge panels on my Samsung phone, but now I want to reinstall it. When I use the command:
adb shell cmd package install-existing com.samsung.android.app.cocktailbarservice it does show up in settings. But when I try to enable it, nothing happens.
Is there another package that needs to be reinstalled or did I just completely break the function.
Welcome to XDA.
Factory reset will fix it

That cocktail service one is needed for one if memory serves me correctly.
Anything with "egde" in it.

You're welcome, hope this helps.
This is on a N10+ running on Pie. In Android 10 and above there may be more "egde" system apps added to preserve functionality.
Beware of uninstalling the numerous Samsung system apps unless you know exactly what they do. Target the resource and power hogs; most just sit there unless called upon and use very little resources. Many modify the UI and as such are useful.

I was careful when uninstalling. I just didn't think I'd have a use for edge panels. I guess I'll just have to factory reset :/

Probably best to find the root cause rather than factory reset if possible as otherwise the issue will likely reoccur. Go into settings, do a search for "edge panel", see if it pulls it up and if it opens. It can be less than straight forward at times when setting it up.
The Edge cut/paste panel is real handy, and the Smart select panel.
The app names can be sometimes misleading as well or have dependencies you use.
I block about 80 packages. I'm still adjusting my list. I've had this N10+, still running on Pie for over 3 years and still find features I didn't know about or forgot about. Factory loaded Gookill apps are some of the worst offenders... it's not just Samsung.
