question about repair service and unlocked bootloader - LG V10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my v10 h901 finally met its fate yesterday and went into the inevitable bootloop.I called LG and they told me to it would be fixed for free even though its out of warranty.I'm in Canada near the border so ill drive down and sent to LG's repair center in texas from there to avoid paying customs twice! BUT before doing any of this, i think my elegibility is void because my phone has a unlocked bootloader and is rooted. Do you guys think LG has some leniency in regards to this? if i ship if out are they just gonna send it back saying they wont fix a unlocked bootloader device? Should i just take it to a 3rd party repair service?
ANY advice will help!

[Q] Warranty W/Bootloader

So I have a Question. I unlocked my bootloader following the HTCdev.com Website and when doing so there was a warning saying that in Unlocking it I MAY void my warranty. I have followed Xboarders instructions to completly Relock the bootloader and boot completly back to stock. If anything goes wrong with my phone via Warranty issues(Such as the screen stops working or a button stops working and there is no Physical damage) will t-mobile warranty the phone without charging me the crazy restocking fee. Has anyone done this before on a different phone. I know on my older galaxy S phone I could but there wasnt the bootloader issue. Thanks for any advice.
Pretty sure that HTC/T-Mo won't charge you because its a hardware fail that could've happened regardless if you unlocked your bootloader

Call them.
these companies work together. If htc knows that someone voided their warranty through the htc dev method, t-mo and asurion prolly know it as well. It doesnt matter if you call them saying "i lost my phone", "someone stole it", "it flew up to the moon", etc - they already know its warranty no longer exist... simple
This isn't directed only at the OP so please don't take offense, but this question has come up so many times, and no one seems to actually be using their brain to come up with a real answer. Since my brain apparently still functions, let me set this straight.
First of all, warranty and insurance are different things. If you pay for the insurance through T-Mobile (which is through Assurion) then it shouldn't matter whether you void your warranty. You would still be covered either way. That's why you pay extra for it.
Second, HTC states that you MAY void your warranty. Which means the warranty still exists, but that if you have a problem with your phone and send it in for warranty repair or replacement and they feel that your issue was caused by unlocking the bootloader and doing something stupid (like bricking it by trying to flash an incompatible radio or something) then they can choose to not honor the warranty.
You guys really need to stop worrying so much.
Also of note, there is currently no way to get back to 100% stock after unlocking the bootloader. You can relock it, but it will say 'relocked' instead of 'locked' indicating that you messed with it. Plus I assume HTC keeps a record of the unique identifier codes that were submitted for an unlock code.
Hopefully this clears things up. You're welcome.
^^^^^^^^^^What he said.
MAY is the operative word.

[Q] unlock and warranty

I searched and couldn't find a clear answer to my question:
I bought an AT&T HTC One off CL and want to flash the international ROM, however, I am afraid of voiding my warranty...
1) is there any way to restore htc one back to its "locked" state after unlocking, from what I understand it is only possible to change it to "relocked"
2) Does the "relocked" status imply voided warranty? has anyone dealt with AT&T in the past?
I have seen my share of smartphones failing, including my international S3 failing into its 14th month so would really like to keep the warranty intact
Unlocking the bootloader does not necessarily void your warranty in the U.S. But it will probably make your claim a little more difficult. HTC has, in the past, honored warranty when the fault was clearly not the users fault. For example, if your power button gets stuck in the down position and can't be raised. At this time, there is no way to get the phone to show LOCKED again instead of RELOCKED. Now if HTC gets your phone and determines the issue was caused by the user, they will still replace it but charge you for the parts. You will probably have more luck working with AT&T reps in your warranty claim because they aren't trained on how to tell if your phone is unlocked/rooted as long as you aren't obvious about it.

AHEM: /Taps mic....
Simply unlocking your bootloader isn't an automatic voiding of a warranty.
I am doing a warranty return myself and the terms I agreed to were the phone must not be physically damaged, or water damaged.
Also HTC THEMSELVES will repair a phone UNDER WARRANTY with a HARDWARE DEFECT despite having an unlocked bootloader.
I have never in my several years of dealing with AT&T had a warranty refused because I rooted my phone.

Until we get S-off (which is coming soon) the bootloader cannot be made to say "LOCKED" once it has been unlocked.
Sorry for the double post, but thought of one more thing. I had to get my phone warranty swapped for dead pixels. The AT&T reps I dealt with in person tried to convince me that my device wasn't covered because, like you, I bought the phone from an individual. They said warranty are not tranferrable and only belong to the person who bought the phone. This is not true. Warranty is on the device and provided by HTC, not AT&T. They are simply acting as an intermediary to facilitate the exchange. I had a whole lot less trouble dealing with the phone support folks in getting it swapped.

Thanks for that piece of information, MOST HELPFUL!
Any idea if there will be a different unlock tool for s-off our if I can unlock and just wait for s-off?

If past exploits are any indication you're going to need root to gain s-off so go ahead and unlock.

It appears to vary based on the store and who you happen to interface with.
The safest way is to do an S-Off, remove the tampered notice, modify the splash screen, and then lock it. But that is a lot of steps, some of them a bit risky if done wrong.
Unlocked as in carrier? If you bought it from tmo, then it should still be covered unless you did something else to void the warranty. If you mean bootloader, then that voids the warranty so you're probably gonna get hit with a fee, maybe on the back end.
FWIW, I had no trouble getting my last One replaced for a stuck pixel despite bootloader unlock. I took it to a store and had the rep there initiate the exchange, though I still had to receive the replacement in the mail since I bought it online. Before sending it in I just nandroided back to stock and flashed stock recovery and that was it. I was worried for a while that they would hit me with some extra fee because of my unlocked bootloader, but it's been over a month and nothing.
I'm guessing since I had a super-obvious hardware problem (stuck pixel) nobody bothered to do a thorough check., but getting S-OFF and fixing everything to look locked is probably safer.

Warranty

Hello everyone, unlocking bootloader removes our warranty, but is there any possibility of retrieve it? Does Lenovo seriously checks phones, when we make a complaint? (I found that, Lenovo has page with warranty status, and they will deny, if we unlock bootloader)

they will even refuse to fix hardware issues if the bootloader status is or ever has been unlocked. Pretty sure this practice is illegal in the US, but in Canada, they refuse with reason "device unrepairable" .

Thanks for your answer, I'm very glad how that phone works now, but no risk no fun. I probably install Lineage 15 or 16 one day Likely in Europe warranty is also refused by unlocking bootloader
Hardware issues have to be repaired in germany within the warranty. But dunno if they would repair something which might have damaged with software... e. g. overclocking/-volting.
I had my bootloader unlocked, after a couple of month my bluetooth stoped working. I just relocked my bootloader and sent my device to my carrier for repair. They changed mainboard and repaired my device and they never noticed it. If you have already unlocked it and have problem after ... just try it they might still repair it.

My Moto z was on aokp and then died from nowhere. I sent it in under warranty and they swapped the Motherboard.
Just have to try it, worst case is they will refuse it.
Btw, I have to send my device again .... they didn't glued back the screen properly. I will ask for a replacement I can't accept this for a phone I bought new of this value.

LG V30 H932 Won't Permanently Unlock

Hello my LG V30 H932 will not Permanently Unlock. The phone was paid off in full and I waited 40days like Tmobile requirements want. The phone which was brand new was replaced due to a malfunction with the display. So they gave me a warranty exchanged phone. And i have had trouble unlocking the phone ever since. Tmobile ended up giving me 2 more warranty exchanged phones thinking that this would finally solve the problem with the unlock. And after trying and trying the phone will not unlock despite being on the phone with Tmobile tech support for weeks (they tried everything from Manager Overrides, whitelisting the IMEI, putting the phone through escalation, etc) and they still were not able to unlock my phone. The Device Unlock App keeps saying "unlock failed". Finally Tmobile suggested using a third party online unlocking service which they even paid for and still this unlocking service wasn't able to unlock my phone.
Has anyone else ever had a problem with Tmobile not being able to permanently unlock their phone via Device Unlock App? I keep telling Tmobile i think it's because the phone is a warranty exchanged phone and this is why it's not working. But they said no that shouldn't cause any issues. Anyone else know what I could do to get the phone unlocked? Highly appreciate any advice and help and thank you for your time.
No issues with mine. T-Mobile sent me the unlock the day I bought my device (paid in full) and no issues usings other carrier SIM's in it.
Had two v30 with the same issue. For me allowing the unlock app to access all the permissions fixed it for me.

Yes I have all permissions allowed and still not working.
Before i got my LG V30 replaced with the warranty exchanged one (bc of the display malfunction that i had) the phone did permanently unlock for me. On the Brand New Lg V30 it unlocked just fine. Then when they sent the warranty exchanged v30 it would not unlock anymore. I think the problem is with the warranty exchanged phones. Just my thought.

You are probably correct, but that's an internal T-mobile issue. They have it so locked down even that 3rd party unlocking service can't touch it. I find it amusing they actually paid for a 3rd party unlocking service for you. That was them admitting they really screwed it up.
Okay today i called Tmobile one more time to ask about my IMEI. I wanted to make sure that the IMEI was in good standing. And that it was not on anyone else's account by mistake. Everything looked good. After explaining my situation again for the 100th time, the account specialist said she can transfer me to their Advanced Technical Support Team which Tmobile has never tried before. She also was perplexed bc on their end my phone says it is eligible to be unlocked. Anyway After speaking with the representative she said she would submit my case for escalation with their Technical Engineers. This we have never done. So in afew days i should hear back from them and i hope and pray that finally the phone will be able to Unlock Permanently! If not then there is nothing else i can do. I have tried what seems like everything. Unless anyone from XDA has the solution! Updates coming soon.
Also i want to add that at one point a technical support representative said that they will request that they replace my phone with a new one and not warranty exchanged one. He said he can't guarantee that tmobile will approve of this but he would try anyway. But of course i did not receive a new phone but the warranty exchanged phone instead. I just think tmobile could have tried harder to compensate me some how, but no nothing. But i think if after the technical engineers get back to me and still the phone won't unlock i am going to tell tmobile that i will file a complaint about this. And even share on social media how they have failed me. I will also tell them that I'm really disappointed that they didn't offer me any compensation for this situation. Tmobile has failed big time and what are they going to do about it??? Most likely nothing..
@michy21: This is troubling for sure. I gather you must still be with T-Mobile (or you wouldn't be able to use your SIM locked H932).
I too unlocked my TMO V30+ after 2 months using the Device Unlock app, and switched to an AT&T MVNO. T-Mobile reception is terrible inside our apartment, so I had no choice. But I worry what will happen if I need warranty repair (my screen just got a dead pixel today) or even after OS updates. T-Mobile probably won't grant unlock again without me being a subscriber.
They treated me horrible when I ported out, and I swore I'll never go back to them -- too bad because I really liked T-Mobile up till then, and would've come back when they roll out Band 71 in our area. So yes, this worries me.
I'll be quite interested to hear the outcome of your story.
You know I feel your pain. I bought a V10 off swappa a couple years ago and the same thing happened to me. There's a thread in the tmo V10 section where I listed the direct contact info of a lady named Jennifer I believe. She was the one to finally help me and make it happen and is quite high up with tmo. I went through all the same crap as you for months. She's the one to help you. Everyone else is useless no matter how much they will tell you otherwise. Give me a few minutes to find the thread.
Oh and I actually filed a complaint with the FCC . You need to do that ASAP too.

Good luck. FCC should be your priority. I highly advise you to word in such a way that portrays them as "unwilling or refusing to unlock a device that meets the criteria". That will get a better response and they will want to fix that to be able to close the ticket. You gotta play dirty a bit. That's what I did and it worked quite well.

I just finished filing the complaint and emailed jennifer. Hope to hear from someone soon!
I just got done talking to Nicole from the executive office at Tmobile. She called me regarding my complaint I filed to the FCC. And she couldn't get my phone to unlock, but she said she is going to send me an Unlocked phone instead. It's not brand new but a warranty exchanged one that is in excellent condition. So finally I'm happy with the outcome.
