Hello,
Have tried searching xda-developers, google, and apps to no avail.
My SGS2 thinks I am roaming when I am not, so certain Apps will not work as they were intended.
Is there anyway and or app that would override the phone/sim to think I am not roaming.
Thanks in advance for any solutions.
There is a option in settings-wireless and network-mobile network... Data roaming, untick that, i do not know if it does anything for you, and maybe choose automatic network selection, according to sim... other than that, i wouldn't know... It is strange if its roaming all the time in a home network...
When un-checking Data Roaming the phone will no longer connect to Data services as it thinks it is Roaming.
If selecting the network or leaving it to automatic it makes no difference.
I had this same issue before with other phones and was hoping with Apps or Root Access I would be able to finally force the phone to think it was not Roaming.
Did you by any chance use same sim card on all of your phones ? if yes, contact you service provider, because no phone should think its roaming all the time. I doubt it its up to the phone, as apps go, i've haven't heard of any, but if i find anything i'll post it..
Yes I have used the same Sim. It is not one of the main local providers in Spain (Movistar, Vodafone, Orange) but rather Simyo which is owned by KPN (major Dutch company). Simyo only sells sim cards on the Internet and are extremely cheap.
I have checked with the service provider and it is something they force, in that Data connection will only work when phone is set to Roaming. Internet, and Skype works but Rebtel will not activate as it thinks I am roaming.
I have this same issue.
Just upgraded my SGSII (GT I9100M) from the stock Bell firmware to Android 2.3.6 XXKL1 Firmware. After the upgrade it thinks it's roaming when it isn't.
Anyone try this? Windows Phone on Straight Talk?
Mobile data (internet) works perfectly fine (and fast!) but I can't connect to live services . . . which kills the user experience of a Windows Phone. The Live services work over wifi, but when there is no wifi connection, the services, including marketplace, bing search, scout, etc simply refuse to connect.
Any thoughts on how I can correct this? I've tried everything I can think of and spent hours searching to no avail.
Any help is much appreciated.
Hi, I have the Lumia 800 on Straight talk and everything works perfect.
Make sure the apn setting are good.
Is Straight talk a network that gives you SIM card and no phone?
If it's a network that uses some other carrier's masts i.e. O2, Vodafone for example, then there is a solution to it.
How do you get your APN settings on your phone? Do you enter it manually?
Here is what will help you:
Once you connect to wifi to do whatever you wish and you complete using wifi, go to your network settings, mobile settings, then edit apn - enter your APN settings manually. I am not sure what Straighttalk APN settings are but you would surely find it somewhere.
After saving the APN settings, restart your phone but make sure wifi is switched off before you restart.
After the restart you will be able to use Live services with 3g.
However as soon as you reconnect to wifi, you will have to re-do the whole cycle each time in order to get Live services working on 3g again.
This might or might not work. I had exactly same issue on giffgaff. I have spent 3 months trying to figure out, flashed ROMs, hard resets, swapped carriers etc and finally have found this to be the way it works. I own a HTC Titan. Till today I thought, it was HTC's fault because I have ruled out carrier and MS for this. But if the above works for you then, it clearly isn't HTC's or carrier's fault but sure OS that keeps forgetting the APN. The reason this happens is because Straighttalk in your case and Giffgaff in my case, DO NOT have APN settings stored on their SIM cards. The OS doesn't seem to be configured to remember it. Ideally when you swap from wifi to 3g, your OS shouldn't have to read your SIM. However WP in current state seems to be reading SIM everytime you swap from wifi to 3g. However, when it can't find anything on the SIM i.e. APN settings, the live services won't work.
If this works, please please please drop me a PM as I don't use this Lumia forums at all. I have a Titan, so I wouldn't know. But if this works, I will have to write to WinPhone Support with whom I've been conversing for about a month now!!

Mind sharing what settings you're using? Also, are you using WP's built in APN tool or Nokia's Network setup?
APN is: att.mvno (all other fields are empty).
Using the built in WP APN under cellular in settings.
Tried the Nokia but it messed up the phone so I took it out.
Let me know if this helps.
I'm using my 800 on StraightTalk and have had the same issue. I found there are essentially 3 places where the APNs can be set up, and reboots must occur at the right time. (Win settings, ##634#, and Nokia tool)
it seems to be overly sensitive as to how they are configured. I must have reset this thing at least a half a dozen times before getting it to work. Ultimately, I ended up with the settings in all 3 places, but the sequence I did it in is Win Settings (network APN), ##634# (both network and MMS settings), a reboot, and then download the Nokia tool via WiFi and use it to enter the settings there for both network and MMS followed by another reboot. That issue is most definitely related to the APN settings, but I'm not quite certain why I had to do the hokey pokey to make it work. None-the-less, I hope this helps a little. Once you get it working, it seems to stick through reboots, wifi, or pretty much anything except swapping out the SIM card, which hosed everything up again.

Interesting. . . There doesn't seem to be anywhere to do that in the most up to date version of the diagnostics tool. (I know they changed a few things in the most recent update.)
I may have to restore to a previous version . . .
Thanks

I just activated my Straight Talk SIM yesterday (I was on T-Mobile's EDGE connection) and used Nokia's Network Setup tool to add, and make current, a new APN with att.mvno under the Internet APN's 'name' field. That's all I did, and data works fine (surprisingly, even on the RM-801 which doesn't have AT&T's 850MHz band).

How is call quality and what are your download/upload speeds. Been debating whether I should get a RM-819 device which is harder to obtain than a RM-801.
I picked up an unlocked TMo One in New York last week. I used it there with my Norwegian SIM with no problems.
Back home, I get "No Service" using the exact same SIM-card. Using the *#*#INFO#*#*-menu, I can see the SIM-card is recognised because it displays my carrier in the "Current Network" field. I am suspecting the TMo-infused Sense OS to reject my card, since to my understanding the phone is compatible with EU networks. Will i be fine if i flash another ROM, like the stock GPe, and get rid of the TMo-stuff altogheter, or is there another rock in the road here?
I used my Tmobile HTC One with the stock ROM in Norway using a Telenor SIM and in Greece using a Vodafone SIM.
I would make sure you have the proper APN info (I can't remember the appropriate one for the Norwegian carriers). I believe it should work without issues (mine did). If it worked with that SIM card already, it's not locked and it's not rejecting it.
Also, I found that when I returned home to the US, I had to choose Settings -> Mobile Data -> Network Operators and choose Select Automatically (even though it was already chosen). Maybe you need to do that too.
Currently I am running Android Revolution and that also works fine with my Norwegian and TMOUS SIM cards.
Good luck!
Thanks! I've at least made some progress. I tried setting Network Selection to automatic, and got reception, however only for about half a minute. I then tried adding my provider's APN info. This has given me permanent data connection, but still no GSM reception for texts and phone calls. I do get 2g data when in low coverage areas. I am finding this weird. Can anyone shed some light?
Okay. Just wanted to post my latest findings - if others are experiencing the same issue. I've flashed the latest Google Edition RUU, to see if the TMo ROM was causing it. But i still don't get GSM coverage. Data still connected on both 2G and 3G (haven't been within 4G coverage yet..)
When flashing I also updated firmware to latest.
Phone info says Current network: "NetCom" (my home network) GSM service: "Emergency Calls only" (I tested this, and I am able to place the call to emergency services) and GPRS service: "Connected" (I am typing this on my data connection via WiFi-tethering, actually)
The status menu shows this: Service state "Out of service" and My phone number "Unknown".
If anyone can come up with a theory, I am all ears..

Have you tried taking the phone to your provider? Maybe you need an update which or setting which they can provide.
I find it strange that it wouldn't recognize your phone number, usually that's a sign of some type of incompatibility with the phone and the network.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2
I have contacted my provider to see if there's anything they can do. But they're playing a little hard to get.. I was afraid there would be an issue with compatibility at first, by since my data connection is all right, I'm not so sure. Also erdelyt above here says he has used the TMo phone in Norway without trouble. He has another provider, however. They run their own network, so I will be trying with one of their SIM cards next, if my provider NetCom aren't of any help. Thanks for your help so far. I'll be posting my findings further!
So, I got to try a Telenor SIM card the other day, and the issue is still there. Although, with that card the phone number was read and displayed in the phone info menu. The owner of the card suggested there was an unlock issue - but I did make calls with my phone and SIM card in the US, so I don't see how that could be.
So that's a small step further, but now I just have to wait to see what my carrier says..
I changed the title for this thread after my findings.. I got a new SIM-card for my carrier, and i got coverage to make one phone call, but after i hung up, it was gone. I am really in the dark here.. It can of course be a hardware fault, but that's a bit strange for an entirely new product..
My venerable Samsung Galaxy S i9000 (rooted, Android 4.2.2 using CyanogenMod 10.1.2 ROM, on Virgin UK) has always served me very well when roaming abroad, and up to last year I had no problems with data connections. I'm just back from France, and could not get any data connection for the entire 2 weeks I was away (I bought a travel pass of course, and got confirmation of validity). This is totally unprecedented. I spent hours on the phone (calls and texts were OK) to Virgin, who variously said they needed to refresh my account settings at their end, then that there were known European network issues, and then that the problem was with the phone. I was told to turn on international roaming, but I don't have that option. The options at Settings>networks>mobile networks are:
Data enabled - ticked
Data roaming - ticked
National data roaming - ticked
Access point names
Use only 2G networks - unticked
Network operators
I don't have anything called international data roaming, and indeed have never seen this on any Android version I have ever had. I have seen images of other phones where `data roaming' is replaced by `international data roaming', and I'm sure there is no technical difference. Roaming is roaming surely?
I am very suspicious that there is actually nothing wrong with my phone, and that something odd is going on with Virgin. The reason is that last year I was running Android ICS using a different ROM, and mobile data kept turning off. This went on for over a week until Virgin found it was their fault and fixed it. At that time they never mentioned international roaming. I've done the usual searches and not turned up anything useful. There can't be anything wrong with the handset because data access turned straight back on when I got back to the UK. Can anyone shed any light?
Hmm. Calls and texts were working though, just not data? And it wasn't an APN setting? I'm assuming they had you check those. Did it show you were connected to data but there was no data transfer? In Settings > About Phone > Status - what would it say? Disconnected? You've used the phone on that other network before? It's possible that the other carrier's data frequencies aren't supported by the phone.

Yes they got me to check all settings and all were OK, except that according to Virgin there should be this `international data roaming' option which I don't have. The signal strength icon on the home screen showed a little R not a little H as normal. So I don't think there was any data connection. My key question though is whether there is any evidence at all that rooting affects roaming. I've been searching the web for over a week and found nothing about that. Frankly I don't believe it.
I love this phone....there, I said it. But it's driving me crazy.
I bought it from a Chinese retailer, who shipped it with X821 firmware, but the box states that it's an X820. I doubt there is any difference in the hardware.
I would have left everything as it was, but I can't seem to make phone calls (don't have a data plan yet...yeah, I know....) with anything other than 2G, and that is about to go extinct. When I set it to WCDMA, it shows a UMTS connection, with no carrier designation, but the tower is the same one I connect to with 2G. The phone does sometimes show an AT&T 3G connection in the status bar, but I can't make calls, even though I have full signal. When I place the same SIM in my old HTC Inspire, the same monitoring app shows "UMTS - AT&T HSDPA+" and works just fine.
I'm at my wits end. I have rooted, installed TeamSpain recovery, replaced the firmware with the X829 and even tinkered with the frequency configurations through DFS Studio (which did a lot of complaining, and I'm still not sure if the changes stuck 100%). I also played with APN settings and tried the SIM in different slots, both alone, and with another SIM. And after all of that, still no progress in getting this phone to use a 3G or 4G connection to make calls. If I don't set it to "GSM only", no phone calls in or out. I'm essentially right under a tower, so signal shouldn't be an issue.
If anyone is using the same provider in the US, and is not having these kinds of issues, I'd really appreciate hearing what firmware you are using, and/or what you did to get things working.
I am using it on x820 with official stock 0.17s firmware, and did a dirty flash to cuoco92's 17s firmware. Everything works including HD voice calls, and full LTE.

I tried this, as well as the Remix ROM. In fact, I think I've tried just about everything, without success. At one point, I had one of the apps indicating a 4G connection, but the phone diagnostics showed GSM (2G). Even the apps aren't all sure what to make of what's going on with the connections reported by this phone.
Currently on the cuoco92 v35 ROM. When WCDMA is enabled, I see simply a good UMTS connection , sans carrier name, in the "Network Cell Info Lite" app, and no ability to make calls. I also often (but not always) see the "AT&T 3G" sign. 4G or LTE never shows at all, even though the diagnostics show that the phone is communicating with an LTE transmitter, when preferred network is set to "unknown". It won't even let me set things like "LTE only".
Any chance you could set your phone to WCDMA and see what the "Network Cell Info Lite" app shows you? Anyone else with this phone on AT&T?
BTW, I am now using a data plan, which I thought might make a difference. It doesn't. EDGE data only for me . New SIM card is on the way, but my hopes aren't high.
Is it possible for a Chinese seller to have borked the phone so thoroughly with their x821 ROM (it's an x820 marked phone), that it keeps any subsequent radios from flashing properly? I don't know how/why it would work for some and not others.
Starting to really dislike this "phone"......it's more of tablet at this point.
Thanks.
I think APN is not set for AT&T
try this:
"Main steps
To use data services on our network with a non-AT&T device, you may need to program the data settings. The sections below provide the correct settings and steps for programming based on your device type and operating system.
.
Access the Settings menu.
Locate and select Wireless & Networks or More Networks.
Select Mobile Networks.
Select Access Point Names.
Locate and select the option to add a new APN. This is usually accessed by a + symbol on the screen or by tapping the menu button.
Program each field using the settings below.
Save the changes to return to the APNs menu and select the new APN.
Name ATT Phone
APN phone
Proxy Not set
Port Not set
Username Not set
Password Not set
Server Not set
MMSC
MMS proxy
MMS port
MCC 310
MNC 410
Authentication Type None
APN type default
APN protocol IPv4
Bearer Unspecified
Note: If you are unable to program your device following the steps above, refer to your user manual or contact the manufacturer for assistance."

Thanks, but I wish it were so simple. I have tried this, and other APN settings. None work to get this phone to be usable on anything other than 2G.
I just received and activated the replacement SIM. Still no improvement. While typing this, I have Network Cell Info Lite app running, and with the Set Preferred Network Type showing "Unknown" in the phone's diagnostic screen, It will switch randomly between "EDGE AT&T" (which works fine) and "UMTS -" (which is useless). Both have strong signals. For a split second before it switched to "UMTS-", the app showed "GPRS AT&T", but only for a split second before it kicks over to "UMTS-".
I wish someone using this "phone" on AT&T in the US, would run this app to compare notes. It may be that that the phone works fine on a full implementation of LTE (i.e. in locations where AT&T have already deprecated 2G) but not in other areas. Still, that doesn't seem to explain why this phone seems unable to register on the same 3G network, used easily by my other phone, with the very same APN settings and SIM.
You would have to call att and check if they turned our phone on to use lte. If your phone is not "registered" as an LTE capable phone it wouldn't be able to pick it up. This phone has all the bands needed for AT&T because I am using it now. All LTE work straight out the box, and i'm on the latest 19s cn rom

I'm a bit confused. Is this what you did to achieve proper function of this device? I.e. calling AT&T and getting them to do this for you? My conversation with their tech person didn't seem to bear fruit in this regard.
Also, which slot do you have the SIM card in? I've used the stock 17s and now on cuoco92 v35 ROM. There definitely seems to be a difference in how the network settings behave, based on the location of the SIM. At one point, after selecting BAND 6 (when it would let me), the phone showed a constant "AT&T 3G" connection, but it was useless. No calls and no data.
