Use Odin to flash a custom recovery such as twrp. Then use twrp recovery to install custom ROMs.

I tried using Odin 3.10.7 to flash the twrp, but, it is not working, any further suggestions. I read something about an MD5 file....what is it....do I need that

What error did you get? If you could, post screenshots so that I can see the process and errors.

Earlier I had used odin 1.85 . This time I used odin 3.10.7 .

[Q] Kernel for nandroid backups? - JB 4.1.2 leak

I'm on the stock leaked ROM & kernel. I hear that Philz kernel has some added functionality but dodgy with nandroid backups. Can anyone confirm this? Are there any other kernels yet which are better for this?

apart from 'Philz' kernel no other Custom kernels will wrk with Stock JB leak ma8
OK thanks for that. Guess I'll have to wait. I really want to be able to do a nandroid backup in case things screw up and I have to spend ages restoring everything.
I never had problem with backups on Philz kernel. At least for me to do backup and restore working well.
Can't seem to install this! Just tried flashing the latest - PhilZ-cwm6-XXLSJ-OXX-3.70 - using Mobile Odin. It just reboots the phone and the kernel isn't flashed. Tried it twice with/without the md5 tag but didn't work either time. What am I doing wrong?

Is your phone rooted properly in order to use mobile odin. Else flash the philz .tar.md5 in download mode via odin.

Well, it's rooted - not sure about properly. I flashed a file (posted on XDA) which rooted it after flashing the ROM. Everything appears to be rooted - Superuser, Busybox, etc
Problem is I can't use Odin cause I'm on a Mac so I have to use the mobile version.

Your rooted for sure, i also flash that update.zip on recovery, but the thing is you cant flash a kernel via mobileodin.. i dont have an experience of flashing fw,kernel on M .O,but i read somewhere many users experiencing issues when using that, thats why i prefer windows odin. im not saying dont use M.O.. but if you want a guaranteed flashing just used odin for windows.

OK cheers.
Just out of interest I just booted into recovery <3e> and I get an error message in red at the bottom:
"E:Failed to seek in /cache/update.zip )invalid argument)
E:signature verification failed"
I'm confused. Does this refer to the root "update.zip" or to the kernel which didn't flash?

What does mobile odin says when you flash the kernel lately?and did you rename this

Yes, I renamed it "update.zip" before moving it to the ex SD and flashing it.
When I try and flash Philz kernel, it selects OK in Mobile Odin but when I press "flash" the phone just reboots normally, not into recovery and the kernel isn't flashed.

Help. Trapped in cwm startup recovery.

Hello,
Yesterday, when trying to create a backup of my current ROM (original, factory ROM) it seems that after the backup process was finished, when I tried to reboot my phone it would go directly into cwm recovery instead of starting up normally. This happens every time I try to reboot the phone. I have a Samsung Exhibit sgh-t599n (metro pcs).
Other things that may be revelant to my problem: the backup was not successful (there was a message saying something about an image not being copied). Also, in the cwm recovery menu there is a warning that says "No file_contexts".
I would appreciate any help you could give me.
Thank you

Okay so you do know how to get into Odin. Try flashing a different custom recovery. Also make sure the one you are using is made for your device. There aren't any recoveries that are universal with 1 file. Just make sure the one you are using is for your phone!

But in order to reflash do I have to take the same steps that I took for flashing cwm or do I have to do something different (delete cache, reformat phone, etc.). Sorry for the insistence.

I don't do much with odin since i dont ever have any issues with my recovery but all you should have to do is install the recovery just like you did the first time. Also if you are following a guide to do this make sure you are checking the right options!
Also not all odins are compatible with all devices. Make sure the odin you are using is for your device!

-I was able to flash a custom ROM (compatible, PAC rom); however, the problem persists. Every time I boot the phone it takes me directly to cwm recovery.
I was able to find these instructions (thanks to thereal_big jake from androidarea51.com) for solving a problem very similar to mine:
1.Flash Stock Recovery in Odin Link
2. Factory Reset in Stock Recovery
3. Flash CWM in Odin
4. Now Flash your Rom or Backup
5. Reboot
Could somebody explain how to flash the stock recovery with odin in my phone (samsung exhibit sgh t599n).
Thanks

Developer edition stuck on recovery and download after beans7 flash

mark,
I have messed up my device. It has phil recovery on in and beans b7 version in there. I can boot into recovery but every time after beansintall it kicks me back into download mode. I have done a twrp like backup using phil recovery but I get and error ( is prob corrupted),
Any ideas how to bring this back to life? I have an MI1 version on it. with a Y it was.
Maybe there is an aroma setting in which I can flash and boot.
Any odin tar images?
I have tried the tar below but it cannot get the aboot.
thanks

Yes it is a developer. I have tried only the tar in the link above. it did not get pass aboot.bin and some other file.
the recovery is intact and I have beans b7 rom in a zip on the phone. I was hoping that maybe there is an aroma combination I can use.
Also in Phil's cwm there is the option to disable the loki at the dev ed does not need this.
I was wondering if there are any factory tars out there for the dev edition
thanks

G920F soft bricked

Hello
I have had a look around the forum and i can't seem to find my answer.
I tried to install CrissCross 6.01, all was good untill it got stuck in a boot loop due to an issue with the kernal. I can't get into recovery and wipe the device.
I have tried to use a stock rom, but would i be correct in saying that because the boot loader has been updated to 6.0 I can't use a 5.1.1 recovery?
I have been trying to fix this for 3 days now with no luck, if anyone has any idea what i can do I would really appreciate it.
Thanks
Stuart

I can get into download and that is where I have tried a few different stock Roms
The error I get is SV Rev. Check Fail Device : 3 Binary :1 in Odin and from my understanding that is because I'm trying to use a rom that is trying to downgrade the boot loader
I think I need a 6.0 stock rom for this to work but I are t sure
Edit one more thing that confuses me is it will let me flash a 5.1.1 twrp but it still won't let me into recovery.
Thanks
Have you tried to flash bootloader / kernel via Odin?
Try to flash older TWRP, also, via Odin then try to flash 5.1.1.
I'm not 100% sure but I doubt you can flash 5.x.x ROMs from newest TWRP.
Try few things with older recovery and kernel, that shoud wake the device.
As long as you can access download mod you can save your device.

Thanks for the reply.
I have only flashed twrp in download mode not touched any kernels. I thought you could only flash a kernel I twrp that's why
Do you have any suggestions as to which kernel and twrp ?
I had same problem yesterday..
I flashed CrisCros ROM for S6 edge and bump into bootloop.
I just restarted device to download mode, flash kernel via Odin (in BL) and all went well.
You have kernel in OP of CrisCross ROM, that's 6.0.1 kernel, flash it and twrp via Odin, restart to recovery and flash ROM.
That should be enough and your device should boot.
You see, there's no bricked device as long as you can flash, fastboot or sideload something to you device..

Odin is for flashing the original firmware from Samsung. You should be able to find it here in the forum for your phone. They usually will post it either in the General or Development sub-forums. If you can't find the exact one you need, then you can check out sammobile.com, though it is usually a pretty slow download. You must use the one for your variant of S4 and can be specific to your carrier or region, depending on which S4 you have. You should only use the same firmware or newer.
odin for samsung
i will recommend try flashing a custom recovery like twrp or philz for flashing a custom rom
flash recovery image using odin or any adb boot type commands
also be device specific when u search for rooting or flashing roms to avoid bricking of the device
