Some apps simply insist on being installed to internal storage even if you set sdcard as the default. Even root may not help as root apps like App2SD can only move apps that are supported to be installed on SD card. IIRC there's an ADB method to force your phone to always install apps to SD card no matter what but app performance will suffer if the app wasn't configured to enjoy SD card support.

link2sd, you can keep application on intern storage, so you can unplug µsd card

yes, but the linked apps might get messed up, if you pull the µsd card out, while the phone is turned on. better do that when your phone is turned off.
link2sd
Once app2sd is installed, every app gets installed to SD. With link2sd, you only move apps of your choice to sd.
I chose to leave Titanium Backup, Root Explorer and Fancy Widget in system memory. Every other app I moved to SD.
Link2sd
Edit: It is an application so you just install it like any other .apk (and with your ext* partition). You can choice the applications you want to link to your sd
I'd installed App2SD before seeing link2sd appeared around the internet.
I have no intention of reverting everything just for the sake of link2sd since both working the same principle only that link2sd have the option to choose which app to install where..
However, all my apps specially titanium backup, root explorer, fancy widget and etc are running fine even they all were installed in the sdcard. All I do is assuming I have that extra storage by default(app2sd installed) and leave it anonymously in the background.
This is just based on my experience and Opinion.
Link2SD hassle free, user configurable.
App2SD hassle to install, all apps are moved to SD(not user configurable)
Link2sd, no doubt
I prefer Link2SD !
Before I've trying to install app2sd but when I reboot (I use a class 2 SDcard ><') my home doesn't launch and my phone was unusable because of the forceclosed of Launcherpro... But now with Link2SD I let my home on the phone and link all the other applications
Finally Link2SD is a software ! you can remove it easier and safer than app2SD
Link2sd , without hesitation .
link2sd, I need to have the choice
Prefer Link2SD,have choice on my side.
another argument here: Link2SD can move apk and dex files only. Data folders remains on the phone. you will notice that the more apps you install, even though you move them to ext*, your internal storage will eventually get smaller.
App2sd moves everything, so you will save more space that way.
preference then. if you need more internal space, go for app2sd. if you need some apps on the internal storage like i do (widgets, utility tools like root explorer, call meter, poweramp), use Link2sd.
I use link2sd and it works well. I know on my phone storage is such an annoyance. So I am quite happy to use it.
I have a couple questions for you all.
I had the fat partition of my card become unreadable by my phone but the ext was fine but trying to reformat the fat partition I messed up the ext partition because without being able to mount the sd through the phone I could not get the computer to recognize it correctly to use a program like EASUS Partition Master and fearing regular windows format would kill both so I tried the phones format and it did the whole card too...a shame.
Is there an easy way to back up the fat and ext partition of your sd cards?
What is the highest class card that makes a difference on performance of apps?
When a card is linked to sd and data is still on phone is the cache as well and is there program that can link caches to sd card or something like that?

This is just my opinion regarding the app2sd and link2sd.
I think the argument is like more on a performance vs space argument,
though link2sd only move apk and dex, since data is on a fast storage. the performance will not be affected.
I think you will not benefit much on app2sd, performance wise if you are using class 4 or lower sd. and might even force close application on class 2.
its not likely you'll install 90 to 100+ apps on your phone anyway.
but in end, its still a matter of preference.
no doubt , link2sd better
if you use like 80+ apps
i recommend apps2sd for 1 reason
backup and restore using apps like MyBackup pro is done easily by only one touch
BackUp app with Astro BackUp Manager and Link2SD functionary like a charm.
both apps are awesome but for my needs, link2sd is more practical......

[Q] Free space on internal memory

Hello,
My internal memory is about to be full due to the applications installed on the internal memory not to the SD card. Is there anyway to move the installed applications to the SD card?
I tried to do that from Application management but the move to SD card button is inactive.
Thanks
Try darktremors app2sd...
Sent from my GT-S5830 using XDA App
DT A2SD script or use S2E.
The move to sd card option is inactive because those apps are protected apps, that is,apps that cant be moved to sd card.
If you are reluctant on rooting, then use the force install apps to sd card hack,it moves apps partially, same option when you root your phone too.
Flashing script method is recommended though,Frees up your internal memory a ton
or you can just try forcing apps to sd with titanium backup

Highly recommend S2E. Moves Dalvik Cacheto the SD freeing up about 100+MB to the SD card. And use Titanium Backup to batch move them to the SD. Make sure you select the right apps to move. If you move your theme and such to the SD, your phone will quick reboot every time you turn it on. Don't move things you're using on your phone to the SD unless they're apps.
Here are some screen shots to prove I'm not lying
Got the number of apps installed, amount of memory free and S2E working its magic ;D
I cant find on market s2e

[Q] Prevent apps from installing to SD in ICS?

Some apps seem to install to internal memory by default, and some to sd card if one is present.
Even more annoyingly however, many of the apps that default to SD card if you move them to internal memory MOVE BACK TO THE SD CARD when you update them.
Is there any way to prevent apps from automatically installing to the SD card? Or at the very least, installing to SD card is fine... but to prevent them from moving BACK to the sd card when you update them?
I've seen this question in 3 different topics on XDA and none of them is answered. My question is similar to this; Apps are installed on internal memory but app data is on external. As a result i have a completely empty internal memory and a full sd card. Tried possible suggestions on other sites but didn't work. Why can't we choose where to install the app data? How to move the app data back, since app2sd wouldn't work on this situation.
FYI, buy a bigger memory card is NOT a solution, it's a workaround for the actual problem..

Looks like your problem can be solved with "link2sd" which gives a permanent option on where to install apps. Search it in Google Play.
In my case (i have three different memory blocks) you have to do a repartition and a custom rom but i don't want to go there so i just mapped the drives with editing vold.fstab and bought a bigger memory card

Internal sd or external sd?

Hi to everyone,
I have 16 GB version of sgs 2 and it shows I have 11.5 GB free space as internal and 8GB free space as external and it is ok for me. What I dont understand is when I download apps from Google Play does it install to internal sd ? ( 11.5 GB ) because when I looked at storage usage my space becoming less from rom side which I have 1.2 GB free space. How can I install all apps to internal sd ?
thanks for your help
When you download an app from Google Play, it will go to your internal storage. If you want, you can move it to your internal SD card by settings-apps-all-yourApp-move to SD (simplest way).
If you want to move it to the external sd card, use apps such as Link2Sd (on market), which needs root access.

Actually what I want is to use internal SD because I have 16 gb free and I dont want to install apps to my external sd card because when I unplug it I wont have chance to use apps since it is installed sd card beyond of it I wanna use my sd card just for my photos and some musics. So should I take a rest if it will install apps directly to internal sd?
edit : what is the reason that when I install apps total space 1.97 gb decreases? if I am installing apps to internal storage where it has 11.5 gb ?
Storage available for applications
Hi all,
I have an Sii gt-i9100g running ICS 4.03 (non-rooted).
Recently I've been getting an error when applications try to update: "Application cannot be installed in the default install location".
So I checked my phone storage.
phone memory: 1.97Gb
Applications: 647mb
Free: 247mb
USB storage has about 10.5Gb available.
I uninstalled a few applications I didn't need on a regular basis and then the phone was able to update the installed applications successfully.
I went in to application management and there's no option to move the installed applications to USB storage (I don't have an external SD card)
So this raises a few concerns:
1: How come there's a mystery 1.1 gigabytes that isn't accounted for in the phone storage? I thought all of Android ICS was stored in that missing 4GB of USB storage memory...
2: If the phone doesn't allow further installations to phone memory when there's only about 200mb available, and if the phone has reserved 1.1 gigabytes for some hidden purpose, then is it true that without buying an SD card, we only really have about 700MB available for applications?!
3: Why isn't the option to move applications to USB storage available under ICS? I believe this was available in Gingerbread.
Anyway I could be wrong with all of this, I'm new to the SII, but if its the case that this supposedly 16GB device only truly has 700MB available for apps without an External SD card, then I'm gonna be pretty angry.
This is from another forum and same problem like mine

Let me explain somethings you guys have failed to understand (the beginner's way):
1.Your galaxy SII has 16Gig of inbuilt memory
2. the 16G was partitioned by Samsung into 2.
3. First partition is for System (1.97Gig), while the second partition is for Storage (11.49Gig).
4. Apps are installed by default into the System (reserved) partition (1.97)
5. System partition contains preinstalled system apps and media content + the apps you installed.
- therefore, even if you are just opening your phone for the first time, some part of the 1.97Gig will be used up significantly
6. When you connect your phone to PC, only your Second partition (11.49G), is mounted so that you can transfer files to your phone. That's why this storage is often referred to as Internal SD.
7. Apps are installed on the System partition by default for faster loading.
8. Even though apps are installed by default on the system (reserved) partition, some of the apps can also be moved to the internal SD.
This can be achieved in two ways:
a) without installing app:
- Goto Settings > Apps > select app of your choice, especially the big ones, > Select Move to SD card
b)with third-party apps:
Apps like titanium backup, app2SD etc can move any app to your SD.
Note:
1. Moving Launchers and Widgets to SD will break their function, so do not do this
2. this process can be necessary when you run out of space on System (reserved) partition.
9. Your MicroSD card is referred to as External SD
If you have more questions, let me know

Thanks for detailed explanations but What if I dont have an external minisd card and I want to use 11.5 gb of internal sd ? For example HTC One X has built in 32 gb space and it doesnt have any sd card slot right? so they use internal sd for everything like in iphone ?
I found a topic at xda to change usage like this :

can you look at this ?

1. The HTC will still have a system reserved partition.
2. Yes, you can use the internal SD.
check my previous post, I'd already explained how to move apps to Sd (internal)
If you understand ADB, you can install apps directly to SD card, but that's a little advance
this app (free) makes moving Application to SD very easy

Hi Jokesy,
I've got a problem.
After I moved some apps to SD Card (using Link2SD or Titanium Backup), they are gone from home screen, app drawer list, and even in the list of installed apps they still missing. However, the files are still in disk but for some reasons, the OS cant detect them.
They only came back (to home screen and app drawer) after I perform Hot Boot.
Could you please explain why that was happening?
And how to avoid that problem?
I am using 4.1.2 Wanamlite XWLSW and stock kernel.
Thanks,

Which launcher/homescreen launcher are you using?
Instead of hot boot, just go to options and restart your homescreen launcher if it's supported.

hmmm, I'm using TouchWiz Launcher. I dont think it was caused by launcher, because I checked my application list in Titanium Backup when I rebooted normally, the missing apps were listed as uninstalled.
For some reasons, apps that moved to SD Card, only installed (or loaded) if I reboot using Hot Boot

That's weird. Try moving the apps to SD using Titanium backup, also try another launcher e.g Holo or Nova launcher and see what happens.

I tried using Link2SD and Titanium Backup, but after reboot normally, they are still gone. I tried Smart Launcher, but they stil didnt appear. Because they were listed as uninstalled. The files are there, but the system doesnt load them. Must still do hot reboot first before the system loads them.
I guess I'll take 1 example for disappearing app, this information taken from Link2SD (after Hot Boot):

What actually Hot Boot does and normal reboot does not?

Moto E Lineage 14.1 issues

Hello Moto E users,
I have a first generation Moto E. Today, I decided to flash Lineage OS 14.1. It worked smoothly, but I saw some serious issues:
1. Root not detected:
- Installed Super SU from Play Store and it doesn't detect root.
-Flashed Super SU from LineageOs website and Super SU did not get installed.
Apparently, you don't need the Super Su app, all you need to do is flash the zip and enable root in developer options.
2. Memory card not detected in PC:
One of the regions that I upgraded to 7.1 was because of the low internal memory. After I formatted my SD card, it says total 18 gb in settings. But, when I connect it to PC, only pure internal memory is shown i.e. 2 GB. I cannot copy my backed up songs, pics and videos to SD card from PC.
3. Moving apps from internal to SD card or vice versa doesn't work
It says not enough space for the smallest apps even if there is more than enough space.
This can be solved by enabling Force apps move to external SD card settings on developer option and after enabling it, just uninstall the app which don't move and reinstall it from play store . The app now automatically installed on external storage .
4. Apps not working under certain conditions
When install LineageOS for the first time, we get a setup Lexar SD option. If we decide to use it as internal storage, we get two options:
i. Move Now (around 500mb will be freed)
ii. Move Later
Choosing move now will free space in internal card but any apps installed in external will not work. Choosing move later fixes it.

1. Did you enable "Root access" in Developer options after flashing Lineage's su? It didn't come with any Super SU when I flashed it. Instead I used ES File Explorer, which has some good root-related options (uninstall system apps, startup manager etc).
2. I have used my SD Card in both ways (as media storage and as an Internal Storage adjacent) and I only could see the SD Card on the PC after going to Dev Options>Networking>Select USB Configuration, then selecting 'Charging' and then changing back to 'MTP'.
3.~~
4. I think that if you use your SD Card as internal storage, then your apps are installed in it since it's the only option (your SD Card becomes part of the Internal Storage). I had a tense afternoon trying to get Gallery to work well, it kept on saying "no external storage available", and only after chosing the SD Card as internal storage Gallery and some other apps started working properly.
My personal opinion: Android 7 will not have an option for external storage, and the fact that moto E has the option to run a SD Card as ext storage may be bugging the system.
I'm really no specialist, I have only been using this ROM for a day or two.

Thanks a bunch for the tips!!!
1. Yes, I figured that one out. However, I have moved on from ES due to excessive stuff and ads in it.
2. Ok I found out the possible solution. In order for the USB storage to appear in PC when it is formatted as internal, I have to migrate data from internal memory to SD card. However, as mentioned above in Step 4, doing so will make the apps installed in external not usable at all. They just wont open. So for them to work, I have to migrate data to internal again. Pain in the a** if you ask me.
I don't have a card reader right now, but I'll probably attempt the good old Link2Sd again. Hope it gets fixed soon.
Hi all. I have installed LOS 14.1 on my XT1021 Moto E (Condor). Everything is working fine except for GPS. It doesn't switch on at all, except sometimes after many reboots and some cache wiping. Any idea? Thanks.
