Greetings
I have bought a sim free galaxy s2 5 days back . I am in japan.
From day one I have been facing strange problem. If my 3g disconnects for some
Reason such as going into elevator or traveling in underground,
It doesn't come back. I have to reset my use data package network settings or
Turn on the flight mode and turn it of f again to get connection back.
My apn settings are as per my carrier has suggested.
Because of this issue the phone become almost useless while traveling
Or while going up and down in my office building.
I haven't rooted it yet. Is this firmware problem or hardware.
Please help

Some people including myself are having connection issues when gsm/wcdma auto mode is selected...phone is stable when gsm only is selected..after comparing with 2 other phones,i can confirm this behaviour dosent happen on their phone..and i have to sadly say something is wrong with my phone..why dont you do a little experiment..try selecting gsm only mode and see if your connection is stable..maybe you are having a defective phone like some of us here...untill today i cant figure out if its a hardware fault or some weird software glitch.

In japan currently wcdma is used. After disconnecting
I can only see upward arrow all the time until I reset data network.
This is bugging me big time now

Many people including me are having this exact same problem. I am suspecting the modem software, and hoping it will be fixed soon. But please note I also held hope for almost a year that GPS glitches in the first galaxy were fixable with software, and now we all now it wasn't.
I'm having the EXACT same problem! Out of nowhere my 3G connection is 'lost?' and I only see an upward green arrow.. i have to reboot to get this right.. but after a short while.. same problem again!
I live in The Netherlands... I wonder what the problem could be, but even better! THE SOLUTION!!
Resolved!!!!!!!!
@mmichaell I got a great news for you. I could resolve this buggy thing.
Just dial *#*#9900#*#* this will open a pop-up
from which select Disable fast dormancy....and bangggggg the issue is gone..
let me know if you get it right
nope it doesnt work for me. ive also tried *#301279# trick but still problem is there!! wat should i do? return it? its only 1 month old, same connection works flawless on my nokia n8.
Okay, here is my problem: Every once in a while I will completely lose all signal on my phone. It wont pick up 2G, 4G, nothing. Wifi and bluetooth both seem to work though just fine. I've searched and haven't found anyone with the same issues so I'm wondering if it's just my phone or if nobody has commented on it. I first noticed this about two weeks ago, when my phone refused to find service. I was stuck with the little X next to the signal meter. I figured I was just in an area with poor service and didn't think much of it. An hour later, still, no service. This time I went outside where I know I have good 4G service and nothing for 5 minutes. I enabled airplane mode and disabled it, still nothing. Turned the phone off and back on as a last resort. Still nothing. I ended up finishing the day with wifi calling as that still worked. Sometime later my phone began receiving service again so I thought it was a fluke issue.
Then, just yesterday the same thing happened. This was when I rebooted my phone (which bypasses the fastboot feature) and service was restored right away. I called T-mobile and they said there weren't any network issues in my area and they had never heard of this issue before on the Amaze.
So, this is where I'm asking if anyone has heard of this before. I'm running a stock ROM and it hasn't been rooted. Thanks for any comments!
This might help just a touch. I do live in an area with decent service but my couch and bedroom are deadzones for some odd reason. I bought these signal boosters for 2 bucks figuring "what the hell, I'll give it a shot". No more dead zones, and data went from E to G. Not a miracle worker but for a couple bucks it keeps a signal at least.

Wireless Coverage
I have 2 brand new Amaze 4G for a few months now and had no problem with the coverage. I know the coverage is good with full signal bars and have not found any issue with coverage.
Sometimes, different phones have different received signal sensitivity. Also depends on user behavior. If you are always using a handsfree device (cable or BT) and your phone is in a bag, then your coverage is reduced by your action. The best coverage you can ever get is when you have line of sight (unobstructed) to the cell towers.
There are a few issues with your problem:
1-Poor inbuilding coverage
2-Poor coverage in your area
3-Network optimization issue
4-Hardware issue
If you are going from 1 bar to no bar, then most likely you have coverage issue. You lost signal since the level is already very low.
If you are going from full bar to no bar, you might have hardware or network optimization issue. Try your phone is the city or area with known good coverage first. If the behavior persists, then you have phone problem.
I used to manage wireless network for carriers.
same issue
I've had the exact same thing happen to me. Red x, no signal except wifi, in places where signal is not normally an issue. Battery pull doesn't work, return to signal seems arbitrary. Had the same thing happen with my Desire. I have no answers, but you are not alone.
Yup, it happened with my first Amaze. I got it back in January and started playing with it - rooting, custom ROMs, etc. Then later that day, the signal just died on me. I thought I must've screwed something up, so I flashed back to everything stock. No luck. I waited for half a day, then it randomly started working again at night.
You probably noticed tha tI said that happened with my first amaze. That's because after that signal issue, I discovered that my camera stopped working. I returned it to T-Mobile and they sent me another one. This one is working great though.
Well thank you for all the input so far. Id like to say that this isn't my first cell phone and I'm not new to weak or poor signal areas, especially from T-mobile. I was using my phone at work at the time, which has anywhere from no signal to 3 bars depending on where you are. This wasn't one of the cases that I was standing in a dead zone when I checked my phone. I had no signal for several hours, including over 30 minutes of standing outside trying everything I could think of. I have had excellent signal outside in the past, exactly where I was "Hiding". I got the Amaze because I was tired of playing with my old HD2 and having to work around bugs and possibly not receiving calls. So far, I'm not happy that the radio seems to quit responding all together and leaves me without a phone (minus the wifi calling but I'm not always around a hotspot).
I also experienced a dramatic signal loss at home, going from full signal strength to maybe one bar right around the time that I first had issues. I don't know if this is related or if this is a completely different thing.
I am 99% sure this is an error with the phone - probably software related with the radio driver(s) or radio firmware. I guess I will try taking it back to T-mobile and seeing if they could exchange it for a new one. I was just really wanting to avoid that as I finally got my phone setup how I like it. Again, Thank you for the input and let me know if you are having the same problem or if you know of a solution.
I am on my third Amaze and also tried a Galaxy SII X due to the same problem at my home. Even the Samsung did the same thing. In my house and especially in the driveway, the signal varies wildly between -85dbm to as low as -111dbm. The frustrating thing is once it loses the signal, it doesn't seem to reacquire it without a reboot.
I'm with Telus, and they said they will check on it, but I'm not holding my breath. In my immediate area, outside my house, the signal isn't great, but it will usually hang on. I have been to different cities, and all has been well with it. Coming from a rock steady 2G Touch Pro II, I am disappointed as well..
I am new here to this site, but I am having a similar problem with my Amaze. At work I always have a weak 4G signal, but the last few days it has been gone altogether. I have full phone service (4 bars) but no data. The 4G indicates I have signal, but I can't connect to anything on the web. I called HTC and they had me pull my battery and sim card so they could send a "reset signal" to my phone. After my phone came back up I had faster service than ever, but it only lasted a few minutes and went away again. I am thinking this is a phone issue. Oh, the Amaze is my first Android. My only previous smartphone was my Nokia E71x.
I know if I have WiFi calling selected, an x will show up on my signal if i turn WiFi on. I've personally only had slow data in the area I work. I blame it on the fact that it is a busy corporate park with lots of hotels, cuz my signal is fine elsewhere. Try calling tmobile and seeing if they have known tower issues in your area. I know I had that problem with sprint and they sent me a free airave. Maybe tmobile could do something similar if its.a known problem.

It's most likely a network issue. I get the same thing, it will timeout/refresh the network where it will not get a signal for about 30 seconds a few times per day. I blame the network, since the same thing happened to me with my mt4g

Thank you! This fixed it for me. It was happening only today while I had WiFi enabled, it would turn the mobile radio off completely and the box would be grayed out so I was unable to turn it back on. I had my sim updated today to enable wifi calling so after I read your post, I turned the wifi calling off and the mobile radio signal came back immediately. Strange bug.

I was told It's by design. It saved battery life by not constantly searching for a mobile network it won't use (due to wifi calling). It's not like you can hand off the call to the local network. I do notice that if i start walking outside, once my wifi hits a low signal it logs back on the network.

There is actually an option to specify how the WIFI calling works: either all the time or only when cellular signal is gone. Sounds like you have it set to be on all the time. This means that if you have a good WIFI connection, the cellular radio is shut off and all traffic goes through the WIFI calling app. The other option (which I use) only uses wifi calling when there is no cellular signal.
I have lost cellular signal 3 additional times since my last post. Its not just that I'm in a bad spot and I have no signal for 30 seconds. This goes on for 30 minutes or more - up to several hours. I have found that rebooting the phone fixes it as I believe it completely (as much as possible) removes power from the radio and requires it to be completely re-initiated during the reboot. Simply shutting it off doesn't work as the quickboot is enabled and most likely doesn't perform a complete re-initialization of the radio. My only guess at this point is that there is some kind of possible leftover code from development which never was removed from the radio (this happens more times than not). It could be a timeout or simply causing the radio to hang because of 1. excessive heat generation, 2. excessive power drain, 3. buffer overflow, 4. excessive RF transmit power... In any case, one of those issues could trigger an event in the radio to cause it to simply stop responding.
I am in the process of trying to get T-Mobile to get me a new phone as I am outside of the 30-day window. I have also confirmed it with them that this was not a tower issue.
Thanks

Hmmmm who is dear? Lol.... Ne ways, well first off, I commend you for digging this thread up rather than just starting a new thread without even looking first :thumbup::thumbup: I can't say I've ever seen someone who hasn't even been a member for 1 full day do that. Shoot, I see senior members start new threads or pointless threads without searching first, so good job haha.
Ok, back on topic now, if it's only dropping when you go in your room, then I don't think it's anything wrong with the phone. Not sure who your provider is, but u may be able to call them and have them look up your address and tell you what kind of signal u should get outside your house, and what to expect inside your house. I know t-mobile does at least

Has anyone found a solid solution for this? I was able to pick up a amaze for 50 bucks off of craigslist. But I can't get it to connect to mobile net work. A T-Mobile employee told me to root it, but I'm trying not to cause it's not for me.

Well your situation is a little different than other peoples in this thread if u can't connect al all. Ok wait so first off, it won't connect to a network at all? AND you only paid 50 bucks for it...? Sounds a little fishy to me bud, why did he say he was selling it...?
Next thing, I don't know why a t-mo rep would tell you to root the phone, rooting has no effect on your signal strength or your ability to connect to a network.
And lastly, is the phone a T-Mobile branded amaze owhat carrierr...? and will it not connect at all, period, or can u make calls just not data...?

If the normal connection won't restore after the wiping cash & dalvik cash, you probably have to consider this awesome app:

Hi All
Hope you can help.
At my workplace, I used to get a signal on my S2. Unfortunatly the USB Port broke, so I had it replaced.
However, I now no longer get a signal at my workplace. My mate has the same phone on the same contract(Virgin Pay Monthly). When we stand at the same spot he gets 3 bars and can call, I get no bars and can't.
Its not the sim as we've swapped them. He gets a signal with my sim, and i don't with his.
My mate who is brilliant with mobiles has tried different Roms, Kernels and Modems and still I get no signal. He's had a look inside the phone and the Antenna seems correctly attached.
i am assuming its hardware related?
Is there anything I am missing?
Thanks in Advance
Mass produced hardware always has quality variance.
I have had the same problem before. The first time I bought a cell phone without a pull out antenna I borrowed the exact phone I wanted from a cousin that had it already and took it to work which has bad signal for a day and used it which just barely worked with one bar. Then I decided I was OK with that and bought the same phone and it always had one bar less then his even out in the open. Needless to say I was unable to use that phone for years in the room I spent 8 hours a day.
You say that he has tried different ROMs, well that is a difference, especially the RADIO part of the ROM.
On my previous phone, HD2, I tried a few Radio ROMS (the roms came in 2 parts a main rom and a radio rom) and noticed quite a difference in signal quality, reception and battery life.

I understood he is saying his friend tried different ROMs on the "failing" phone, in order to solve (unsuccesfully) the problem. Am I wrong?
It seems an hardware problem, for me.
Yep as changed hardware logic is broke something possibly antenna .
jje
Yes, he tried roms, kernels and radios in my phone in order to see whether it would make a difference.
I should point out I get reception in other places. In fact in my flat a full set of bars.
If it was the antenna would I still get some reception elsewhere?
Would the antenna either work or not work, or is that incorrect? Could it have been damaged when the USB port was changed?
If not the antenna what other parts would be likely contenders?
Thanks in advance
What happens at that location if you put your phone into flight mode and then take it out of flight mode?
Nothing really. The airplane logo appears in top bar. It says 'Flight Mode will be enabled' then when i click it again, it says 'Flight Mode will be disabled'
Hi,
got my SGS3 today and started playing with it. I started downloading my apps and during this the wifi dropped connection 3 times. It connected again within seconds, but this is not good.
The distance from my router was around 3 meter. My SGS1 never dropped connection.......
Any idea's?
I also have problems with wifi:
It connects normally but after tens of seconds the connection is dead. Android says still it's connected, but it simply doesn't work.. I have no sim installed atm because I have only an oldskool sim and not a micro sim. Tomorrow I will get a microsim at the vf shop and test again..
I had issues like those aswell today using my Adam but only with wireless. Weird ?
Probably your router problem? I'm sure reviewers would have identified that issue as well. Can't wait to get mine though, hopefully mine don't have the same problem
Htc hero, sgs 2 and three notebooks are working fine. Tried different router configs.. Nothing helped. Today i receive a 2nd sgs 3, so I will put it on the test..

I have a similar issue, the status bar shows wifi is fine (the arrows are blinking) but no actual data on the phone. Checked on my tf201 on the same network and its working fine.
This has happened twice now and only restarting the phone fixes the issue.
I have downloaded over 2 Gb with my SG S3 over Wifi at home and at work. No issues, and it´s super fast, even beating my XOOM.
I have a Dlink 625 at home and at work we have a Cisco something.
However had a different problem where the phone just restarts when dialing a number, and then it boot looped on the logo for about 5 times before starting up. scary .

Yes, it is in b+g+n mixed mode and is saying 2.4ghz. As a matter of fact I'm not able to chose another frequency (maybe because of the b and g). I can try to put it in b/g or g only mode.
I also read about that NFC's RF signals can interrupt the Wifi signal, so I will try also to disable the NFC option.
I tried another galaxy s 3 with the same settings.. that one works well on my wifi network.. I think the wifi module is not working properly..
Do you have by coincidence a draytek router. I have the SGS3, and my sister has the SGS2. We both experience problems with wifi also here. I have several draytek routers, all giving problems.
It seems to become a bit more stable if you set the Channel width to just 20 MHz, in stead of 20/40MHz. And use WPA2 only, not a mix of WPA and WPA2.
These two changes made the connection a bit more stable for me, but i'm not 100% convinced yet.
mine doesnt hv any issue with wifi, but for my cell signal, it changes between 3g <> h <> h+ alll the time, anyone too?

I posted a solution for this in the known issues thread but I thought I'd repost here in case you missed it.
I was having similar problems but found that if I disabled the Wifi Power Save Mode I was back to blazingly fast speeds and no dropped connections.
I had to go into Service Mode (dialling *#0011#) and hitting Menu => Wifi and turning off the option for power save mode.
Give it a try. It fixed a couple of other guys problems as well.
Am giving this a go will report back.
That worked but battery drainer . Have put it back on and set wifi to off when screen off. That has helped loads.
Worked for me too, and trip really is unnecessarily complicated and hidden to get something that should be working out the box.
Hi All,
I am having a strange problem with my S2 since last few months. I am from Mumbai, India and using Airtel network. There is a spot in my apartment which has very poor network reception of Airtel and I face issues whenever my cell is in that spot for a while. It happens that whenever I take my cell in that area, it starts losing signal bars till no bars are highlighted on the status bar at the top. It keeps showing zero bars but does not show "no signal" icon. Then, after keeping my cell in that spot for a while when I bring it in a better connectivity spot, signal bars start increasing and it appears that my cell has better reception again. However, if anyone tries to call me or I try to call anyone, they get "Out of coverage area" message or I get "Network registration failed" message respectively. I am having this problem since the day I started using Airtel and have tried a lot of remedies but only thing that works is rebooting my cell. I have tried using OpenSignal app to reset my connection whenever my cell comes back from the spot but even that fails to revive it and ultimately I have to reboot.
Has anyone faced such an issue and any ideas about a fix? Does it look like an issue with my cell or could it be an issue with my network provider? I would prefer not to root my S2 since I have 3 years warranty on it but if you think that it's the only way out of this, please let me know your opinion.
Thanks.
Sounds like a carrier issue to me. You pretty much said exactly that yourself when you said 'There is a spot in my apartment which has very poor network reception of Airtel and I face issues whenever my cell is in that spot for a while'.
That's normal in many buildings. Particularly if the network coverage in your area is borderline or poor. I have a similar issue in my house, in a few rooms I get no bars & sometimes coverage drops out completely, whereas in my loungeroom/dining/kitchen at the back of the house I get good coverage (for me, anyways).
You could try different modems, which might improve things. You don't have to be rooted to flash these, you can flash them using Odin. Tho it is easier to flash them with CWM if you're rooted.
I use to had the same issue with my 3 carrier at my desk in the office, and still on 2g services. I but since last month they already improved to hsdpa network added more bts and now my blank spot became H.
Yes you may try to change other service providers

Thanks for your suggestions guys. Yes, it might be only related to the carrier. But, I think that if signal goes down to zero and then when my cell is back in better coverage zone, shouldn't the modem take care of network registration by itself? My problem is that it doesn't. I have to reboot my cell every time after I come to know that my cell is showing signal bars but is not actually registered on the network. If I reboot my cell, everything becomes normal and so if it was just an issue with the carrier, shouldn't it continue like that even after reboot? If I think about it logically, I think following should help me out:
1. Try out a different cell for a few days and see if I face this issue or not.
2. If answer to 1 is no, then try out different modems on my S2 and see if that helps.
Actually, I just wanted to check if anyone else has faced this issue and figured out that something is not right with S2 drivers or something? That would help me with quick resolution of my problem.

Yep, your logic is sound ;-)
One thing tho. With regard to trying your sim out in another phone, you have to keep in mind the radio hardware is obviously different in different phones. And what that means is (and this is something I've observed on XDA), chances are you'll find the sim works perfectly in the other phone & you have no issues at all. This might be due to the actual equipment your carrier is using in the cell tower(s) you're close to, also the frequencies that gear is using might also be playing a part in your problems.
So definitely try it out in another phone & see what happens, but you could do worse than try out a bunch of modems in the S2 & see if that improves things.

Those are carrier issues, and maybe even the material of the constructions, in my house there are rooms where there's almost no signal at all, and in the living room it's ok, you should try to see in which tower you are connected maybe thats the problem
I have also had these problems on various networks here in Australia. If you don't need the data network, you could try using 2G only option. But that's not really a fix, is it? I suggest you try a pre-paid SIM from another network provider, to test them out first, before re-contracting.
Good luck. :fingers-crossed:

Yes, I was also thinking about it. It could be the combo of cell tower and S2 that are not liking each other that well.. And, if that's the case, I really hope that the issue can be resolved by switching modem drivers. I will have to do some what-ifings to nail this down now.
I like the other suggestion by HotrodHarry on trying out 2G only option - not the best way out but will help me in zeroing down on the cause.
