I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 from Verizon but unlocked and being used outside the US. The phone at random eats up my mobile data while WIFI is on. It also doesnt take small bits, VERY LARGE CHUNKS. Ive had over 1 gb cleared in a few hours.
Now ive made sure my settings are ok, my wifi advanced settings are set to never switch of wifi while the phone is idle. The phone also has the download booster which uses wifi and data together, thats set to off.
The verizon version of the note 4 never removes the data icon from the notification bar unless your sim literally cant use data. If you are in wifi, the E or H is grayed out, if you turn off mobile data, the E or H has a diagonal line thru it meaning disabled. When the phone is secretly using my data while on wifi, the H will go from being grayed out to normal color showing upstream and downstreaming for a few seconds then go back to gray.
The worst part is, the usage of data doesnt record ANYWHERE! The phone has the ability to show what apps are using data and how much, the secret usage doesnt show on any of them. The phone may show only 300 mbs used but my data plan shows i used over 1gb. Also, i have an app that constantly shows traffic up and down stream on my notification bar, it doesnt show the secret usage being used either. Ive reset the phone multiple times, removed all downloaded apps and left only stock apps and same results. I read a thread about the VERIZON CALLER ID APP and disabled it, still no help.
Any PROs in here who dealt with something like this before? Any help appreciated.
I guess everyone is as lost as I am here lol. Broken phone maybe. I didnt even root it!

Hey, I've got a huge problem:
Every time I turn on a device, 12 mb of traffic over 3 g just flies away in an instant. Even thought data connection is turned off, only Wi fi is turned on.
Please HELP
Also, I can't seem to download word nor pdf documents- It says that files are not supported or something, even though they are- I have both Polaris and Quick office
P.S
I lost the data over regular 3 G network, not over wifi... Even though data connection is turned off
12 MB of traffic over wifi ???
That much instant traffic you are downloading something
Factory reset is what i would do .
jje
God damn those five mins waiting time.
When I turn off the device, I immediately lost 12.24 mb over regular data connection, which could end up costing a lot of money
Even with the flight mode turned on, when I turn on the phone I just lose 12.23 mb
I didn't even type in my pin and I lost it.
At least program traffic statistic says so
Maybe its just an app/widget error that ur using to track the data with...

Thanks riverriz, it is only application error . Thanks god
I am on a rooted i777 and have been having signal issues pretty much for the two months I've had this phone. I've done some searching to see what the problem may be but have not come across much.
What happens is that when I have a strong cell signal I am able to send messages and make calls but about 60% of the time when I try to load a web page, update an app's content, or open the market (access the internet in general) I am unable to and left with an "unable to connect" message. During these times only the outgoing arrow of the two beneath the H+ is active. In such situations I switch to wifi but I would rather not have to, especially with an unlimited data plan. So my question is why is this happening and what can I do to fix it. I've nearly thrown the POS over this. It is very odd to say the least. It should be noted that I replaced my AT&T sim card a few weeks ago to no avail. Thank you
I've had similar issues. At various times throughout the day, my phone will be completely without signal or with signal but unable to get any data. I also changed the SIM card to no avail. I don't believe it's the phone but either AT&T or the settings.
Is it possible your reception is dropping off at these times? Does your phone switch to EDGE or GPRS?
Try changing your APN with one of the apps in the market. That tripled my speeds and once I get a new APN to stick, I suspect it will fix the loss of a data connection.
If that doesn't work, return it to bone stock and do a warranty exchange.

I had no data connection tonight and almost nothing worked. In the end, I turned Airplane Mode on and off. That returned my data connection.
I think once it loses signal, it only checks every x minutes. Mine would go a while with no signal, but pick it up immediately if I toggled airplane mode, as you found.
Has anyone else noticed their Lumia using 3G when it shouldn't be e.g. at home with a working wifi access point?
Mine has done this a few times and because WP7 is so clean and simple it's pretty hard to see what's actually going on - there's no data counter. And to make it worse the data icon shows in the status bar even when wifi is on. Ideally it would show one or the other.
Yes, I notice that too. It could be a bug.

Yup, I think it uses 3G when the phone is locked, as the phone seems to disconnect from Wi-Fi when you lock the phone. Another bug that probably needs addressing.
Yes! This affects me too.
It switches to 3G randomly when I'm on wifi and kills my data without me realising (or shows failed page loads when I have full wifi reception).
It also turns off wifi whenever I lock phone which seems to disrupt/cancel all push messages! Push messaging just isn't working.
So is this problem unique to Lumia 800?
i've noticed this too. it'll also present me with wifi hotspots to connect to, including ones it should be connected to.
as of now, i don't know whether it's an issue with locked or unlocked handsets. my handset was bought unlocked with no branding, but i've noticed some of the bugs i'm having don't seem to happen on network locked/branded handsets.
It's not a Lumia thing, it's just how WP works. Turning off wifi to save on battery use I guess. Android has the same default setting, although it allows you to change it.
I can understand it using 3G for background processes, like you say Android does the same thing.
What I can't understand is it using 3G when I am using the web browser on the phone, and the Wifi icon is lit at the top of the screen.

That's not the case actually, before the firmware update I used to get my notifications, after the update, I don't, I think Nokia did it on the firmware update.
Which firmware was this working in btw?
Oh and turning off WLAN when you have an active connection does NOT save power. It only saves power when there isn't an active connection because the 3G uses more for retrieving background data (eg. regular email, social networking updates) and *much* more for retrieving heavy data. I have tested this on numerous Nokia phones.
^ i got the opposite result - normally i have WLAN turned on at all times, because it always connects to wifi at home and at work. my battery lasted much longer (it lasted the night with 39% left, as opposed to going flat sometime in the night) with just the 3g turned on.
I noticed that wi-fi only stays on after you lock the screen if the phone is charging. Otherwise it cuts the conncetion. Very annoying indeed if you are downloading big games over wi-fi. However I get my notifications and emails just fine in any case. Remeber though, windows phone doesnt support proper push, hence why they cant get skype to recieve calls in the background. Facebook and whatsapp push always comes about 3-4 minutes later than needed.
Another thing that i have been testing for a while on various phones (nokia n9 included, not the lumia because it's too unreliable) and also got mentioned in this tread is wi-fi vs 3g consumption.
So my results are:
with 3 emails 15-30 mins sync or push for one, at least one push service eg, facebook, vkontakte whatsapp etc (where possible)
i concluded that if you just leave the phone there for a day in standby and dont use it, it drains quicker with wi-fi on. Everytime. Every phone.
However when using the internet eg. browsing for half an hour etc. wi-fi uses a lot less battery than 3g.
So only use the wi fi when you need it and switch it off for background tasks. (WP7 does that anyway, for a reason)
I average about 70-80 MB per month when i was on android. This month im at 160 MB and i started 10 days into the month.
I suspect that I am using LTE/4G even when there is wifi and it is not switching over. I am able to tell with android because i have the 3G watchdog app. and it alarms me if i get close to my 200MB limit.
Question
1. is it possible to check which data its using wi-fi or LTE when both is available ?
2. Is it possible to limit the LTE/4G to only emails that are less than XX Kb so that it not downloading when im travelling to and from destinatoin
3. is it possible to control which apps can utilize the LTE/4G
FYI, Android can be configured to keep wi-fi on while phone is in sleep (default) but WP7/8 can't. Windows Phone will always turn off wifi whenever your phone screen is off unless you keep it plugged into the charger. There is a rumor that this behavior will be changed to inline with Android in next update. But for now, you just need keep that in mind. If you are at home of anywhere connected with wifi, keep it plugged in is the only way to force the phone use wifi.
There is also an app on the market that can create a fake background transfer job to force the phone keep wifi on. Not sure if it is compatible with WP8 and I forgot the name of the app.

This got me looking at my phone, I had a big jump in data usage the last 24 hours. I had backup set to auto and I think it backed up when I was out and had no access to wifi. I shut off auto backup until I can check into it more.
Hey Guys, is there a decent app which can track data usage, possibly showing what apps use the data?

I feel for ya, but an always connected smartphone on 200mb is tough, don't ya think?
I have a bizarre problem that just started happening, I can't connect to mobile network after using a wifi connection for some time. No matter what I do, the S6 edge won't connect.
I've tried switching mobile connection on and off, restarting the phone, turning the phone off and back on, switching sim cards with another phone (the other phone immediately gets connection), switching airplane mode on/off. I've gone to Samsung and my mobile provider and they have both blamed each other (of course, right?). The most frustrating part is that this happens about 50-75% of the time with my home and office wifi, and almost never with anyone else's wifi (for example trying it in the Samsung store). It will sometimes get a connection 10-15 minutes later, sometimes it takes several hours.
Samsung service has offered to take the phone in to 'review and test' but they need to do a full wipe and it will most likely take several days of testing. Knowing that the problem is almost impossible to replicate outside of my home and office, and the issue goes away by the time a service tech will ever see the phone, and the struggle to back up and restore my apps without root, I'm not sure what to do right now. Temporarily I have turned off wifi and just use mobile connection, but I'll hit my monthly data cap really soon.
This started happening 2 weeks after AOE4, just upgraded to AOE8 and it still happens. My phone is SM-G9250 with Taiwan ROM.
Screenshots attached to show I have good signal strength but not data connection, and the SIM in another phone having a connection (Zenfone 5 with lollipop).

Did you try wiping the cache?
I thought the cache is wiped whenever you do OTA update?
I'll do it manually again right now and see if it helps. Thanks for the tip.

I have the same issue! Very annoying, and miss phone calls all the time or am unable to make them because of this...
Will try the cache wipe
Wiped the system cache from Boot, problem still there.
I also wiped the cache for all apps.
I also tried the phone in safe mode and has the same problem.
Sent from my SM-G9250 using XDA Free mobile app
So the only work around I can find is to go into settings:
1.) 'Mobile Networks'
2.) 'Network mode'
3.) Switch to 3g/2g (I don't have 4G right now, have to pay extra for it)
4.) go to 'Network operators'
5.) 'Search Networks'
6.) choose my network provider
Now the phone works just like it always did, smoothly switch between wifi and 3G and H/H+
I'm not sure what changed as I have never had 4G since it costs me extra.
