Does anyone know how to change the permissions of the files? Every time I try I get the info that permissions can't be change, because the filesystem doesn't support or allow it. Any ideas, solutions?

Trying to install a Thai font into my new X10i but no luck. Got the fonts in Typefresh, managed to get them into system/fonts, /fonts, sdcard/fonts etc but it cant display them. I have Android 2.1 rooted but I don't get any message to reboot when I mount them. I also make the directories R/W and I reboot anyway according to all the threads I have read. When I check thru Root Explorer the directories are back to R/O. Got me baffled. Can anyone help please?

D Kub,
make sure you first change the permission of sdcard\fonts, you should be able to make a backup.
If you find no solution with typeflesh then just use RootExplorer to copy to system\fonts.
Again, make sure you have fix the permission.
I have tried both. After changing the permission in Rootexplorer to R/W then rebooting the permissions change back to R/O. Frustrating!
WAIT! late news.
The /system/fonts directory has R/W permissions. Still only see squares in messages, Google Translate and others. Huh?
I installed Thai fonts on my X10 using FontChanger. It worked perfectly for me.
Hi all,
which system app or file(s) contains descriptions of permissions, which are loaded when installing app or displayed in Settings/Applications?
My ROM displays these permissions incorrectly and I need to fix it.
Thanks!
So, I find out that all permissions are stored in framework-res.apk file, but I still don't know, why are they displayed incorrectly in Settings, in package-installer, Gplay etc.
There is probably some bug in some file, maybe in framework-res, but where?
I could provide all information you need to solve this problem (tell what you need to know). Is there someone, who can help me, please? Thx
EDIT: Is this XDA? Because it seems nobody can/wants to help me...
I'm working on a custom ROM, and I've been having very little trouble - very few problems are occurring, and I've written a number of scripts to automate everything for me. It's a stock-based ROM based on Samsung's KitKat 4.4.2 firmware.
The problem I'm having, is I don't know what permissions are vital. I could copy all of the permissions, and then strip out the ones I don't need after I've removed or changed files, and I could automate that, but that makes my updater-script roughly 3000 lines long - taking up unnecessary space.
I've looked at other ROMs, but what I want to know is whether there is any point having permissions set for everything. Obviously there needs to be permissions on some areas, but do all areas need permissions set?
How can I figure out what permissions I actually require? Or should I think about checking if everything in a folder has the same permissions, and then make that folder one recursive one (and keep working backwards from there until almost all permissions are conglomerated in recursive permission sets)?
Thank you very much and I hope you can help me.

Take a look at the stock permissions and how they are set. In most updater scripts I've seen, unless there's a specific reason, individual permissions are not set, they are handled recursively through the partition or folder. I am fairly certain that all areas must have permissions set, if they weren't then the system wouldn't know what to do with the files (I have never tried to flash files with permissions not set, so I don't know if the system defaults to a permission set or not). The vast majority of files in your ROM will be rw-r--r-- (0644), so verify the permissions you need from the stock ROM and you should be ok.
Edit - Also, this is a good source of information when it comes to updater scripts.

I ended up realising that trying to recursively generate the permission script is a bit on the... scary side. So I just looked through all the permissions (thrice, to ensure correctness) and I've made a base file of permissions and a base file of symlinks for the stock ROM in question.
I want to copy a file to the /system/fonts folder, but no matter what file explorer I use, they are all failing to copy any file to the folder. On ES File Explorer, I get "Permission denied," but when the system is mounted Rewritable, I get "Task Failed." Yes, my phone is rooted. Can anyone please help me out? Thanks.

Did you enable Root-Explorer in ES File explorer? Just go into the left menu scroll down and check it :good:

Yes, it was enabled. I found out that changing the system to Rewritable may have caused the error. I have an app called Emoji Switcher that always worked whenever I had to change Emojis from Google to ios7. When I installed this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.blogspot.superthomaslab.mountsystemrorw&hl=en and set the system to RW, Emoji Switcher could no longer change the emoji file in the /system/fonts folder. I was forced to restore a nandroid backup, luckily without losing data. But I want to know what to do the next time I need to modify the /system folders when it doesn't let me.

cant really help you, but i may be able to offer some info.
im guessing you are either running Marshmallow, or have a nexus running stock?
if no, then the rest may be irrelevant.
i believe it was in M, google implemented some sort of system write protection, it can be bypassed but i dont know how off hand.
on nexus's, with the M update, google has the system so full, even with write ability, you may not be able to because there is no room.
maybe that will help you to look for a fix, maybe not lol

I have a Moto G 2nd Generation running 5.0.2. Although the info is irrelevant for me, I'll take it if I upgrade to Marshmallow. In my case, I'll just avoid changing the system directory manually for now. Thanks for both of your help!

it is usually best to try and post in your devices forum, as everyone there has your device, and may be able to help more.

I treid to edit this file to get better video/photo/audio quality a while back but when I did edit it and rebooted I was stuck in a boot loop.
I want to give it a go again but do not want to end up in a boot loop again if I can help it.
Is there settings I should not edit or permissions I need to set etc to stop a boot loop? What causes the bootloop in the first place? I would of thought that editing this file would stop the camera from working and not the whole phone but hey what do i know
Can anyone provide some insight?
Cheers
most likely permission error
permission should be rw-r-r (read, write for root, read for group, read for global) or 644 depending on what you are used to
anyway, before you make changes, backup system in TWRP then do your stuff
in case something went wrong, simply restore system and no probs
