Which country and network are you? There has been a global rollout of 7.1.1 for the Moto Z so your device should receive the update. But first, make sure SIM card is inserted into your device.

It should receive update. May be while the SIM card is still inserted in your device, I would suggest you backup and perform a factory reset and setup your device afresh. It might prompt you to download update.

Download the motorola update tool from the Atrix website
You could also check the Motorola noobs guide; it covers how to unlock and root the phone, which will you be needing
I suggest installing a custom rooms which will work better than the stock version

In all likelihood, it would already have GB 2.3.4. So do not worry.

This phone must have been imported from countries like US or UK, just try find that there is any sign of operator name like At&t, t-Mobile or Orange etc., in the phone box, you can find it. If you find that only you can update your phone.

Sim card? if you're referring to your network you'll still be able to use it after any of these updates.it wont lock the network.it will only lock the bootloader.
If you want to do it through the SD card method remember that you'll first have to update your phone to a newer version of froyo and then update once more to gingerbread. the automated version will save you the hassle.
And btw your warranty is a sellers warranty not manufacturers warranty.so i suggest you unlock the bootloader and install a custom rom, as it wont affect your warranty status.

I think there is some confusion and i am to be blamed...i have an AT&T phone, not sure if the bootloader is locked or not...I am in India and am using a GSM SIM card here. Now the phone is Froyo...i want a Gingerbread upgrade. I have discovered two ways, through Wifi and through the SD card...
I currently don't have Wifi...so am planning to go ahead with the SD card method.
+ my fear, if i update it through the wifi, my Network may get blocked again. Here was my actual conusion...but I think i will wait for a while...I am using a Froyo 2.2.2 currently...what is the next version until i get on board the Gingerbread??
Thanx again...

Yes, you can update, and it'll still accept the non-Verizon SIM. I've seen no indication that Verizon wants to sim-lock these phones.

I have had this update right after turning it on for the first time, but since I insert my local sim card, it forces me to factory reset it.
Since then no update.
I contacted Samsung & they say: "you must insert a UAE sim card which is activate and working, then factory reset the device to register it back to it's original
software provider. otherwise - no pie for you.
I am not in the UAE and have no way to get such a sim card.
Just factory reset won't help much.
Any help ?

Background:
Sony Xperia XZ1 G8343 running Android 9, September 1st 2019 patch (build 47.2.a.11.228), fresh install.
What I want to do is to [unlock the bootloader](https://developer.sony.com/develop/open-devices/get-started/unlock-bootloader) (my device states that I am allowed to unlock the bootloader), install [Sony's AOSP build](https://developer.sony.com/develop/open-devices/latest-updates), and magisk root
HOWEVER, before I do all of that, I remember reading about something related to DRM keys for the camera and other stuff, and that they must be backed up? Is that true?
Links to guides and other articles is highly appreciated! Thanks!

So the device's bootloader isn't unlocked yet, but when I follow [this guide](https://developer.sony.com/develop/...der/how-to-unlock-bootloader/#tutorial-step-1), my device states that:
Rooting status:
Bootloader unlock allowed: Yes
Regarding whether it's single or dual sim... I'm not sure how to check? I only know that the model is the G8343, which I assume is single sim.

Here's what the SIM card + SD card holders look like. I also included (blurry) images of what the inside looks like. I can see that there is SIM card + SD card pins inside of the SD card holder slot, so I assume Sony produces the exact same phone for different markets, but programs it slightly differently to either support single or dual SIM, but I could obviously be wrong.
